s I write this I am surrounded by a cornucopia of clutter: books, folders, a nasal spray, a jumper chucked onto an undesignated tray, my wallet, keys, mobile and desk phone, stapler, notepads, random pieces of paper, Post-It notes, assorted stationery and photos of my family – all within a one-square-metre radius. So I may not be the best person to be talking about the importance of decluttering and getting rid of all the things you don’t need, which is why I have recruited two of Australia’s top professional organisers to help us all clean up our acts. That’s this week’s cover story. Also in this edition you get to clear out to Hawaii, take a test drive in Citroen’s new Cactus (who thinks up these names?) and give you plenty of ideas about what to do with the kids these school holidays. FIRST JOB?

IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING ON THE COAST, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

Selling shoes Thursday nights and Saturday mornings at Florsheim Shoes in Parramatta in Sydney. I used to catch the train to and from work and walk home. Things have changed a little since then.

I love it the way it is, but I also love the way it is progressing. I firmly believe we need to embrace change and progress to secure more jobs and greater wealth for our community.

WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON?

BEST DAY IN YOUR LIFE?

My new role with the CCIQ (Chamber of Commerce and Industry QLD) is very consuming. I love the role supporting SMEs and local chambers of commerce from the Sunshine Coast to Gladstone. I am always learning and wouldn’t have it any other way.

Of course its cliché, but the birth of my children. The event changed my life instantly. It’s something I don’t think anyone can adequately prepare for or understand until you live it.

CAN YOU NOMINATE A DAY IN YOUR LIFE THAT TURNED OUT TO BE A TURNING POINT?

My son Joshua and daughter Coreena. Josh lives in Sydney with his partner and Coreena on 100 acres near Canberra. While we are not close geographically close, we are extremely close emotionally. They are my best friends and when we are together we never stop laughing. I divorced a long time ago.

DO YOU HAVE A NICKNAME? I have had many I could not print but Fezz usually sticks.

FIRST CAR? A minivan. It’s amazing how many people you can fit in the back of one of those.

FAVOURITE BOOK? The Pillars of the Earth, by Ken Follet. A big read which became part of a series of books. This was the first one I read and the best. It also made for TV but the screen version is never as good.

WHAT ARE YOU READING NOW? Beach Music by Pat Conroy. It was recommended by a friend and is written exceptionally well.

FAVOURITE SONG? There is no one favourite, but depending on my mood I am a sucker for Ed Sheeran and John Mayer ballads. Alternatively, Red Hot Chili Peppers can fire me up.

BEST ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN? What you think is common sense may not be common sense to someone else.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED HERE? Five years.

I made a decision to leave Sensis, a job of 15 years and move to Melbourne for a career change. I put my self belief on the line and exposed myself to a new corporate world. That has obviously led to where I am today.

WHAT ACHIEVEMENT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF? I am very proud of the amazing people my children have grown up to be. They are loyal, trustworthy, caring individuals.

YOU ARE HAPPIEST WHEN? It could be at home listening to music, maybe reading in the sun. Or spending time with friends over a wine or two.

ADVICE TO YOUR 18 YEAR-OLD SELF? Keep yourself happily on an even keel by not buying into the super highs of success or the super lows of failure. Everything is a cycle where patience and persistence always wins.

WHY DO YOU LIVE HERE?

TEA OR COFFEE?

I moved here for work and knew instantly that this was where I want to spend the rest of my days. I love the beach and the hinterland. Everything close together and in harmony.

Green tea in the morning followed by a flat white with one sugar a little later.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE?

My time in Melbourne taught me to appreciate AFL, so I do follow it. However, I am a Sydney boy and a diehard Blues and Penrith Panthers supporter. League is my first football love.

The coast has so many great places I couldn’t pick just one. Aside from Cotton Tree, I love Coolum and Maleny.

THE CULT OF DECLUTTERING Decluttering can reduce stress and improve your health, happiness, finances and relationships. So where do you start? WORDS: Richard O’Leary

What started as a selfhelp book has become a movement to declutter the lives of millions of people around the world

rofessional organisers have been around for years, but the declutter craze only really hit the headlines with the release of a book by an unknown Japanese author who spoke no English and had no previous publishing experience. Marie Kondo’s The LifeChanging Magic of Tidying Up was released in 2014 and has been on the New York Times bestseller list ever since, with nearly six million copies sold. The book details a very simple philosophy: pile everything you have into five categories – clothing, books, papers, miscellaneous items and sentimental items so you realise how much stuff you have, and then hold each one, and throw it out if it does not give you joy. Followers have taken her advice to the extreme, throwing out childhood photos, wedding gifts, and even boyfriends. What started as a self-help book has become a movement to declutter the lives of millions of people around the world, and there are now many imitators of her message and methods, although often with a bit of a twist. Take American self-help guru James Altucher who has put his own spin on the decluttering dogma. The former tech entrepreneur, venture capitalist and financial expert has thrown out all but 15 items. He now carries around all his worldly possessions in a small canvas carry-on bag. But not everyone wants to go to the extremes of Kondo and Altucher – many of us just want to get rid of some of the clutter

to create a little space in our homes and lives. But what’s the best way to do that? My Weekly Preview spoke with some of Australia’s best known professional organisers about the tricks of the trade and why it is so important to clean house.

BONNIE BLACK, PROFESSIONAL ORGANISER Why is it important to declutter? You may have heard the saying, a cluttered space is a cluttered mind. Well it is true, but it’s so much more than that. When we declutter we are fine tuning our lives to select the priorities that are truly important. Decluttering helps us cut off the dead wood so that the rest of the plant can be allowed to bloom and flourish. It is important to declutter the items and activities that are not central to our current journey, that are not part of our future. Just because an object or activity was part of your past, doesn’t mean it should be part of your future. What exactly does it mean to declutter? Decluttering can involve objects in our homes, activities in our week or

relationships in our lives. To declutter one of these aspects is to prioritise what’s most important to us right now and in the immediate future. It means to sort and separate what is part of our past, our present or potentially in the future. Often people who have been stuck and unable to make life decisions have found that by decluttering physical items and spaces, they have come to a greater clarity about what is truly important. What is the secret to a successful declutter of your life? The secret to a successful declutter is to start small, have success in that one area and move onto larger areas or bigger decluttering projects. To properly declutter one must embrace the occasional difficult decisions and not allow themselves to get stuck. Decluttering is emotional and it can be very difficult, but it is well worth the effort. If you were going to give people one tip about decluttering, what would it be? Start with a small area that is the least emotional like the kitchen or paperwork. One client recently remarked how surprised she was to find she was getting emotional over which drink bottles her children could keep. Find success in small areas and use those victories to tackle bigger spaces. What are some of the places in the home that we forget to keep clutter-free and what can you do about them? Cupboards are often the biggest culprits. We think because they are hidden and we can close the door that the clutter doesn’t

affect us. But every time you open that cupboard and sigh because you can’t find anything or something can’t be put away, it has a negative effect on our moods. Work through a shelf at a time and decide what is part of your current or future situation and let go of much of the rest. What effects are there when you have too much clutter around the house? Clutter causes us to feel claustrophobic, overwhelmed and stressed. When we can’t find items or things stick to benches like magnets because they have no home, it creates an endless to-do list in our mind. Every time we see piles of clutter our brain reminds us we need to do something about it, which turns into guilt because we don’t have time or the emotional energy to do it. This is a vicious cycle and results in home owners avoiding being in their own home because they feel so overwhelmed. What are the benefits of getting rid of all that clutter? The benefits of decluttering are not just emotional but transfer into physical and mental wellbeing. Clients who declutter report they are happier, they eat better and their primary relationships are greatly improved after decluttering. What’s the worst example you’ve seen of someone letting clutter take over their life? The worst cases I’ve seen have nothing to do with the physical amount of clutter, but with how the clutter has impacted the owner. Whether its cooking dinner or getting ready in the morning, no matter how big or small the activity is, when you can do it with less distractions it will be a more positive and enjoyable experience. We often keep things for the ‘just in case’ moments, which leads us to cluttering up our homes with things we don’t need for the now. We hold onto both our memories and dreams through our things which can hinder us from living our best life in the now. What exactly does it mean to declutter? Decluttering is the process of taking stock of what you have and assessing whether it is needed now. What is the secret to a successful declutter of your life? Realising that this is not a one-off project but rather a continual process. A big purge can feel great, but you need to also adjust the systems in your home, change your habits so you won’t simply be back feeling overwhelmed with your clutter in a

few months. If you were going to give people one tip about decluttering, what would it be? Have a vision in mind before you start. This gives you a focus and intention as you assess your stuff. What are some of the places in the home that we forget to keep clutter-free and what can you do about them? The common hotspots for clutter are places like the kitchen counter, the junk drawer, linen cupboard and your car. I like to train my clients to schedule a regular time to clean out these spaces, for example, every Sunday clean out the car of all the kids’ sport equipment from the weekend, chuck out the rubbish, and return home any bags, jackets, homework books etc. so you have a fresh canvas at the beginning of the week. What effects are there when you have too much clutter around the house? When you have too much clutter you feel distracted, overwhelmed, and disorganised. Clutter often triggers arguments between couples as they play the blame game for whose stuff is causing the most stress. Clutter can impede any efforts to be organised and time effective. The daily routines of getting out the door are hampered and sabotaged by our stuff literally tripping us up along the way. Just think about this: if you spend 10 minutes a day looking for your keys, bag or shoes that never seem to be where they should be, you waste over 60 hours a year. What are the benefits of getting rid of all that clutter? Less stress, less time wasted, less money wasted, more of what you love, more focus and more space. What do you do with all the stuff that you don’t need any more? For most household items, I donate them to my local charity stores. I like to try and find particular causes that need my clutter too – for example unwanted bras and swimwear is donated to the Uplift Project, unwanted hotel toiletries are given to Every Little Bit Helps. declutteringdiva.com.au

16 sensational tips to declutter your home 1. Choose a style that suits you. Some people prefer decluttering in big chunks while others like to nibble away at the problem. Spending a whole Saturday getting on top of a mess may be perfect for some people, or maybe you’d prefer to a allocate 15 minutes a day. It doesn’t matter which method you adopt – just pick one. 2. Fill one garbage bag. Start at one room in the house and just keep moving until you have one garbage full of things you don’t need. 3. Make a spot for all your incoming papers. Create an in-tray for your mail, bills, receipts, advertising flyers. All these paper products can only go there, which eliminates multiple clutter points around the house. Sort this pile at least once a week. 4. Take everything out. When you have targeted a spot you want to declutter – do it properly. If it’s a drawer, take absolutely everything out and then decide what you do and don’t need. 5. Start small. Create a clutter-free zone; somewhere in the house where nothing can be placed unless it is being used, for example a kitchen table or a counter. When that has become an established practice, expand the clutter-free zone to another part of the house, and keep going. 6. Have no fear. If you haven’t used it in a year – throw it out. It’s as simple as that. 7. Pick up seven things and find places for them. These are things you actually use, but you never seem to have a good place for them. Spend some time working out where they should go and that becomes their place forever more. 8. Get rid of all that paper. Just chuck out all the paper in your house you don’t need – old letters and cards from exes, work documents from a decade ago, the manual to that juicer that hasn’t worked for three years (throw out the juicer as well). Unless it’s for tax, a marriage or birth certificate, insurance papers or wills, what right do they have to be in your house?

9. Visualise what you want. Spend a few minutes thinking about how you want the room to look and then make it happen. Keep removing stuff until it looks like it did in your imagination. 10. Create a ‘maybe’ box. You haven’t used something for a while but you can’t bear to part with it? Put it in a ‘maybe’ box. If you still haven’t used it in a year – throw it away. 11. Cram your car with stuff for charity. Search your house for anything you don’t need but could be used by others, and fill your vehicle until there is no more space. Drop off, and repeat at regular intervals. 12. Create a 30-day list. The reason we have so much clutter is we keep buying stuff. When you want to buy a nonessential item, put it on the list. After 30 days, have a look again and think about whether or not you really need it. This way, you’ll avoid impulse purchases, which means you’ll have less clutter to clear. 13. The Four Box Method. Go into a room with four boxes and assign every single item to either rubbish, donate, keep or relocate. It can take a while, but it’s great once you are finished. 14. Clean out the medicine cabinet. When was the last time you went through all the pills, lozenges, Band-Aids and cough medicines? Chuck out everything that is out of date or looks worse for wear. Don’t leave it for another decade to attempt again. 15. Kids needs to be part of the solution. Make sure your children know where things go and encourage them to return things to where they should be. It’ll be easier if they see you put your things away – every time. 16. Try and wear only 40 articles of clothing in four months. See how inventive you can be by using fewer items in different ways.

Sunshine Coast Council has refused proposed changes to the upper floor levels of the soon-to-be-completed Aria Breeze development in Mooloolaba. Divisional councillor John Connolly says the alterations would have reduced balcony sizes, reduced setbacks to the main building line and created unacceptable changes to the overall built form of the building. “The applicant had two options – either lodge an appeal with the Planning and Environment Court or submit a further request to change the approval, and address the built form and setback issues in more detail.”

SOMETHING IN THE AIR Nick Sayer has devoted years of his life to preserving Australia’s aviation heritage through his work with Queensland Air Museum. Words: Leigh Robshaw

ith a father in the British Army, it would have made more sense for Nick Sayer to love tanks and soldiers as a boy, but instead, he loved planes. “I have a picture I found recently that shows me when I was about two years old with an aeroplane in my hand,” he says. “It was a little tin one. “I was building model planes in the late 1950s. I’m 65 now and it’s virtually been a whole life of aviation interest.” Sayer has been the registrar of Queensland Air Museum (QAM) at Caloundra for the past 28 years and is the museum’s longest continuously serving office bearer. He takes care of the museum’s growing collection, receiving each item that is donated to the museum, photographing it, numbering it, cleaning and tagging it before entering it into the database before finding a storage location for it. He has volunteered years of his life to the museum, driving back and forth from Caloundra to his home in Brisbane, and as the Baby Boomers downsize and donate war memorabilia they no longer have room for, he’s getting busier. “Underneath my house I have a working area and it’s absolutely chockablock with things that have been donated or things we’ve collected for 30 years that haven’t been accessioned or tagged or photographed,” he says. If he sounds like the kind of person who performs his task as meticulously as a boy paints his model planes, think again. “I don’t have a neat bone in my body,” he laughs. “I tend towards a low-stress kind of lifestyle. I don’t get hung up about the small stuff. I’m a classic Aries. Aries aren’t necessarily the first to put their hands up to do something, but if nobody else volunteers, they often will. And do a thorough job. My work at QAM gets done in my own generally untidy way.” Sayer is also the museum’s IT guy and display manager, has been its secretary and treasurer, and was at the first meeting in Brisbane in the 1970s that led to the formation of the museum. You could call it a full-time job, but Sayer would disagree. “It’s not a job it’s a passion,” he says. “It’s what I do. It’s what I enjoy. I only have to do it as often as I like because I’m a volunteer, but there’s a huge backlog. I could be 160 years old and still doing it.” Sayer grew up in England and moved around a lot, making it impossible to form long-term friendships. He found solace in aviation and when his sister met her future husband, who was also interested in planes, he found his tribe. “Eric took me to London airport a couple of times – he was an aircraft spotter, one of those lunatics like I became. You sit

around airports watching planes and taking tail numbers. I started in the early 60s and did it for 15 or 20 years. I would go to different airports and see different aeroplanes, fill in the gaps of the ones I hadn’t seen. I also do aviation photography, so I’d photograph them. “Everybody who does aeroplane spotting ends up gravitating to the same spot at the airport and you end up meeting other spotters, build up a network of people. “It’s a bit like stamp collecting, you can buy books that list all the different aircraft by registration number for all the airlines in the world. If you have a visiting airline with 20 aeroplanes, eventually there will be one that’s really hard to spot. It never seems to come to your town. Eventually you see it and it’s exhilarating. It’s like finding the missing stamp in that set.” Sayer migrated to Australia with his family in 1962 and joined the Australian Air Force at the age of 20, spending nine years as a radio technician working on aircraft like Mirage jet fighters. His wife falling pregnant was the catalyst to leave.

“I wanted to try a build a stable life for my kids,” he says. “Being an Army brat made me resilient, but it was kind of sad that I didn’t really have any long-term friends. I kind of recognise that in my own life.” Sayer settled in Brisbane, where he raised two sons (now 37 and 33). He doesn’t go plane spotting anymore, but says plenty of people still do. “Basically every aeroplane these days is an Airbus or a Boeing. If you go to the airport you still see the new generation of spotters, that’s their normal. What used to be normal for me is gone.” Gone, but not forgotten, thanks to the Queensland Air Museum, which houses a collection of around 80 aircraft and a substantial amount of aviation memorabilia. The annual open cockpit weekend in July is the museum’s busiest day of the year and became busier when the F-111 arrived a few years ago. “I love the F-111,” says Sayer. “It’s just brute force, it’s big and hugely capable, it can fly fast at low levels, it’s a really exhilarating machine. Having worked on aeroplanes in the military, I recognise it as being the top of the pile. “But the one I enjoy researching and working with is the old World War II Lockheed Ventura. It’s the only substantial complete RAAF used aircraft left – it’s the star of our collection. The only bit we got originally was just the fuselage, which had been turned into a chicken coop or something. It had no wings or tails. We’ve had it for 25 years now and we’ve transformed it. It has taken all that time to be about 90 per cent complete. Sayer says after the open cockpit weekend, the museum’s Aero Engine Run Day is another great day to visit, where you can experience the incredible power of the plane’s engines. “Surprisingly there’s a lot of people who confess they’ve never heard of the museum,” he says. “This is their opportunity to come and see it and enjoy the sensory experience of listening to some of these powerful aeroplane engines firing.”

EXERCISE CUTS CANCER RISK

ust two-and-a-half hours of moderate physical activity per week can cancel out the increased risk of cancer caused by drinking alcohol, an international study has found. It is yet more evidence of the medicinal powers of regular physical activity. Published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, the observational study of more than 35,000 people between 1994 and 2006 found that for alcohol drinkers, physical activity decreased the risks of dying from cancer. Inactive moderate drinkers – equivalent to an average 2.4 standard drinks per day for men and 1.6 drinks for women – have a 36 per cent greater risk of death from cancer, according to the data.

For those who were physically active the association was effectively nullified, says Professor Emmanuel Stamatakis from the University of Sydney. All it took to offset the increased cancer risk from alcohol was 150 minutes per week of moderate-intensity activity, such as brisk walking. When you break it down, this is an average of 20 minutes of exercise per day. “Our research suggests that physical activity has substantial health benefits even in the presence of potentially unhealthy behaviours such as drinking alcohol,” says Stamatakis. The findings don’t suggest exercise gives people a licence to drink – because alcohol abuse causes other significant health and societal issues – but they should compel and empower people to invest in physical activity. Stamatakis also noted their findings refute the notion that moderate alcohol consumption is linked to health benefits. “In this study, overall for the whole group of people we didn’t find any moderate alcohol consumption benefit to health, with the exception of those only who were active.” Exercise is an extremely powerful health influence and policy makers need to work much harder to come up with long-term policies to make environments more physical-activity friendly, Stamatkis says. Substitute cheaper mince/ground beef with lentils or lean mince. Sprinkle nutritional

yeast instead of parmesan over your dish. Pizza – It takes two-and-a-half hours of power yoga to burn off the calories from two slices of pizza. Healthy swap – Use large field mushrooms, thick slices of aubergine (eggplant) or thin gluten-free wraps as your pizza base. Skip the cheese or go for smaller quantities of a richly flavoured cheese (preferably from organic and/or pasture-fed sources), such as feta or goat’s cheese. Potato chips – It takes 17 minutes of aerobic dancing to work off one packet of chips. Healthy swap – While the odd indulgence in potato chips certainly isn’t the end of the world, they certainly don’t deserve a place in our daily diet. If you’re craving a savoury snack, opt for homemade and lightly salted popcorn or kale chips instead.

The game, which launched last week, has caused a stir in the industry because of the unique artificial intelligence that powers it, enabling its universe to hold more than 18 quintillion planets, making it, in theory, infinite. The procedural algorithm at the heart of the game uses mathematical equations to determine where a player is within the universe and displays only that part of it. The game also has no obvious mission structure, with players placed on a planet at the start of the game with a spaceship that needs repairing before they can take off into space. ou know you got a cut on your eye,” the leatherskinned Hawaiian man says to me, squinting into the

midday sun. “That’s going to attract sharks. You’d better paddle into the beach.”

Straddling my three-metre longboard about 300 metres off Waikiki Beach, I think about how hard it would be to get help if I crossed paths with the marine life. When the Hawaiian turns to face the ocean again, I quickly feel my eyebrow where my board had hit me moments earlier as I

turtle-rolled under that last wave. No blood. “Too bad it’s too shallow for them out here,” I call back, looking down at the reef below us. He erupts into chuckles with me before letting out a long hoot heralding an

The world’s first surfers were Hawaiian, and Hawaiian icon Duke Kahanamoku popularised the sport in Australia when he held a surfing demonstration at Sydney’s Freshwater Beach in 1914. At the centre of it all is Waikiki Beach, a perfect stretch of sand with 25–30C, partly cloudy to sunny days nearly year-round. The waves here are so gentle, glassy and crumbling that only Hawaiian royals were allowed to surf here in the pre-colonial days. The main surf break is called Queens, named after Hawaii’s Queen Liliuokalani. Today Waikiki is the quintessential beach holiday destination globally – chic, sophisticated, fun, trashy and timeless. You don’t have to be a royal to surf here anymore, but if you want sand right on your doorstep there are seven beachfront hotels. And I paddle to the one right in the middle – the Outrigger Waikiki Beach. First opened by Roy and Estelle Kelley in 1947, the Kelley ohana, or family, still owns the hotel, which is a local institution. Many of the staff have worked here for their entire careers, for decades, and many have parents who also worked here. The staff are always smiling and chirpy as they walk the corridors and restaurants, bidding “aloha” to guests walking by.

Just when I think it’s over the wave drops away again on a second reef and reforms, with a fresh glassy wall steepening. As the wave finally folds over ahead of me, I straighten out and shuffle my feet up the nose slightly so it carries me into the beach. However, the Duke’s Waikiki, on the ground floor of the Outrigger, is really the paragon of the entire beach scene. Up until it was renovated into its current open-air and wood-furniture form, the bars had big glass windows and air conditioning and horrible orange formica tables. Worse still, Hawaii’s iconic beach boys weren’t really welcome. So when the Duke’s was designed it was primarily a place where all the beach boys will always be welcome. My room looks over the beach right to Diamond Head and the cobalt blues of the Pacific. From the shower I can see surfers cutting through waves way out at the reef I was surfing at just earlier. At Waikiki I’m constantly spoiled for choice to fill my time in the middle of the day between surfs. I can try paddling on an outrigger canoe, sail the channels on a Polynesian twin-hull

catamaran, snorkel, laze by the pool or on the beach, or perhaps head up to the hotel’s penthouse spa for a traditional Hawaiian lomi lomi massage. If I’m feeling energetic I could hike up the hulking extinct volcanic crater Diamond Head, known in Hawaiian as Le’ahi, overlooking Waikiki and Honolulu. Or maybe even rent a car and drive around the island to check the famous surf breaks – Makaha, Off the Wall, Waimea Bay, Sunset Beach and Pipeline. My partner knows exactly what she’s doing – shopping, and doing it well. We didn’t realise it before but Waikiki is up there with the top shopping in the Pacific. And I’m not just talking about tourist knick-knacks or traditional Hawaiian souvenirs – the world’s fashion leaders are here too: Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Armani, Forever 21, Macys, H&M and many more. Waikiki has a little something to offer every holidaymaker, no matter what your taste is. Back in my room to get changed for an afternoon surf, I find a card left on my bed. Each day there’s another morsel of information about Hawaiian culture, this one about greetings. The hotel is adorned with pictures, ornaments and placards about the history and culture of Hawaii. It’s a delicate and subtle way to teach

have just returned from Paris. Oui. I know. I would dislike me too. Big time. But I have earned my French frequent flyers after many fiascos despite being a Francophile my entire life. When I was a backpacker, I saved for years to go to Europe and the highlight of my trip was in the final week where I had booked dinner inside and indeed up the actual Eiffel Tower. So fancy. Epic snowstorms stopped the train and the planes getting into Charles De Gualle Airport that year and I never had my champagne overlooking the City Of Love. So let down. Then much later in life a fool offered me a trip of a lifetime to Paris. He dumped me a few weeks before we were meant to leave and I spent the next few months eating my body weight in Brie cheese and red wine. That fool later came to his senses, turned into Prince Charming, and we got married. Our honeymoon to Paris was put on hold as we launched straight into having beautiful babies. Finally, a few years ago, we booked a dream trip that promised private tours of Coco Chanel’s apartment and inside local knowledge in spades. We arrived. I cried with joy. I was indeed in love with Paris. This was my moment. The tour was then cancelled on day two because the leader was a sociopath. So my tour last week was a duly earned holiday of a lifetime. It was not a tour of the main tourist icons but took us off the beaten paths. It was held by a group called The

School, who embrace doing everything slowly, supporting quality not quantity, and have an ethos to support the arts in Australia. During my Big French Week I learnt a lot. Twelve women from across the globe who did not know each bonded over flea market finds and carafes of warm rosé. We had French lessons nestled in a library of great books. We stared at the immense beauty of Picasso paintings. We had hair blow dries in a very fancy salon

There were no kids for the week, which sort of killed me but also sparked something else inside me. It was a glance into the future, when life does not revolve around my little people. I will be devastated when the toddler years end, but it is also good to know there is a new adventure down the road. In the meantime, I am waiting for the postwoman to deliver my box of treasures from Paris. Inside that magic carton are items such as a flea market vintage skipping rope, old dusty books, chipped tea cups and metres of French linen. My dowry just went up. I know what you are thinking. My lucky husband did well to secure me after all.

ow that we find ourselves deeply ensconced in September, the footy finals of both codes bring myriad emotions. The worst of those being the hollow, heartbreaking disappointment that comes with your team being bundled out of the post season. Now those Poindexter intellectual types will tell you that grief can be manifested by five very clear stages; Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression and Acceptance. And yes, these may hold true for the death of a favourite pet or the day we lost Molly on A Country Practice, but come finals time when the full-time whistle chirps and it’s all over for your team, the stages are very different. Stage 1: Blame – A common reaction when it has all gone pear-shaped. Virtually turned into an art form by the likes of Des Hasler and Ricky Stuart, die-hard but disappointed fans will turn on anybody in the vicinity to explain the loss. “The ball boys, were crap, that touch judge has got no idea, that canteen lady couldn’t warm a pie if her life depended on it”. It is always the first destination for the desperate. Stage 2: Apathy – “I don’t even care about the finals”. With their team bundled out of the post season, the fan who has spent the previous 26 rounds wearing nothing but team gear and spray painting their Cortina in a display of team colours that would put the Dukes of Hazzard’s General Lee to shame has now given up on the game entirely. Sad to watch, really.

Stage 3: Transition – Once our downtrodden fan has had some time to cool down, stage three is inevitable. “Well I guess now that the Titans are out, I’m going for the Cowboys” is a statement that will be echoed through workplaces and beer gardens until October. I can’t really judge this one, I spent most of the ‘80s undecided about which of the Blakeney Twins I was more in love with. (BTW, it was Gayle…no Gillian, goddamit here we go again). Stage 4: Overcompensation – Once the transition is complete, these new found

ompanies in high-yielding and defensive sectors, such as utilities, property trusts, telecommunications, infrastructure and consumer staples, have benefitted in the last few years as interest rates headed lower. In the last month, however, confidence in the likelihood of further rate cuts has faded. There is concern the European Central Bank (ECB) and Bank of Japan (BoJ) are backing away from further rate cuts, while market confidence that the US Federal Reserve will raise interest rates by the end of this year has increased. This has led to the defensive yield sectors losing some of their lustre recently. Our view though, is that while the yield theme may experience some volatility around key policy decisions, that volatility is unlikely to last, and we expect yield will remain very much front of mind for the following reasons: â€˘ Central banks are likely to stay accommodative â€“ With low core inflation in the euro-zone of only 0.8 per cent year-on-year (YoY), and in Japan of 0.5 per cent YoY, the ECB and BoJ have not yet achieved their mandate of price stability. Therefore, at least one more rate cut is likely at some point in this cycle. At worst, these central banks will stay put on interest rates, which still leaves a large yield gap between equity dividend yields and bond yields. â€˘ Growth fears to periodically re-surface â€“ Higher US rates will see tighter financial conditions due to higher borrowing costs and a stronger US dollar, which makes US exports less attractive.

These concerns around growth should still see investors seek some safety in the defensive yield names. â€˘ Limitations of fiscal stimulus â€“ The appetite for large-scale fiscal stimulus that will significantly boost growth is low, given high government debt, the growing burden of health and welfare costs from an ageing population, and political gridlock. â€˘ More selective in yield, given it is a maturing theme â€“ We now see the property sector as more fully valued as it trades on a below-market yield. Within the sector, we prefer growth REITs, such as Westfield and Goodman Group. We continue to favour the traditional defensive yield sectors, such as telcos and utilities (with companies such as DUET), where the yield gaps to bond yields are among the highest in the market. Financials offer high yields, but again, we would prefer AMP and Perpetual over the banks given the latter do have some dividend risks. Outside of this, we look for companies with â€˜Yield Plusâ€™ qualities, i.e. companies on a lower yield now, but with the ability to grow their dividends over time. For example, we recently upgraded APA to Accumulate, as we forecast dividend growth of 20 per cent over the next two years, which would take its yield back above 5 per cent (unfranked).

For sports lovers, the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship, run in the Southern Hemisphere for the first time, was a competition that will be remembered for some time. The weather was outstanding, the racing was amazing and the friendship shown by our Coast community to the almost 3000 competitors from 80-plus nations and their friends and families set a new standard. The reports we received from the organisers were that this was the best IRONMAN World Championship yet. For those who love the arts and culture, the 10-day Horizon Festival, which finished at the weekend, was magical. Huge crowds enjoyed the main public events that were part of a packed program full of variety. Thank you for the tremendous support and thanks to everyone who played a role in bringing these highlights of our calendar to us.

FETTUCCINE WITH PRAWNS The weather is warming up, which means it’s the perfect time to move from warm, hearty dishes to something a little lighter. Demi Paterson from Patersons Cooking School shares her recipe for fettuccine with prawns.

Ingredients: 320g fettuccini 6 tablespoons flat-leaf parsley, chopped 4 tablespoons garlic, chopped 3 tablespoons red chilli, chopped Dried red chilli 300ml dry white Italian wine 200ml olive oil 6 to 8 prawns per person

Method: • In boiling salted water, cook the fettuccini until al dente. • Place prawns in a bowl with the chilli, garlic, parsley, olive oil and the white wine. • Place your saucepan on the heat with oil and let it get hot. • Add the prawn mixture into the saucepan with the oil and cover. • Cook the prawns for three to four minutes. The olive oil and the white wine will form a sauce. • Toss in the fettuccini, which should be cooked but still al dente. • Serve with crusty bread.

Cactus. Yes, Cactus. If that’s not the bravest name ever given to a car, it’s certainly in the grand final. But it’s one you won’t quickly forget. The car – as well as the name.

It’s fair to say the weird moniker isn’t the only thing about the Cactus that breaks with convention. In fact, it’s different in just about every way imaginable. Mostly in a good way. In looks, for instance. My wife described it being “cute, in an ugly sort of way”. Which sums this car up. Endearingly, infuriatingly, perfectly, blissfully different. The just-released Cactus is the latest member of French maker Citroen’s ever-expanding C4 range – which includes a conventional (well relatively) C4 hatchback, as well as the funky C4 Picasso wagon and the bigger, seven-seat C4 Grand Picasso. That must surely be the most diverse group of machines ever to wear the one model badge. Citroen – and French cars in general – have always danced to their own beat, and the Cactus more than continues that tradition. Its unorthodoxy is obvious before you even set foot inside. There’s the obvious stuff. Like the doors that are padded on the OUTSIDE. Yes, you read it right. The external door panels are covered in a synthetic padding, called Airbumps, that protect the car from the damage so often visited upon family machines. Citroen claims they can withstand shopping trolley bumps up to speeds of 4km/h.

Might sound a bit weird. But you can say goodbye to ever having to carefully choose your parking spots at the shopping centre or in your garage. To prove the point, Citroen invited motoring journalists at the model’s launch to attack the Cactus, using an arsenal of shopping trolleys and paintball guns. The outcome? After 100 trolley strikes and 5000 paintball rounds was there was precisely zero damage – apart from one errant strike on an unsuspecting tail lamp. Inside, the Cactus is equally distinctive. The door-handles look more like those classy leather straps you might see on upmarket French luggage. There’s an almost total absence of buttons or switches – apart from the obligatory audio controls and cruise control buttons on the steering wheel. Rather, cabin functions run almost exclusively through the 7-inch multifunction touchscreen that hangs off the dash, looking a bit like an after-thought. The instrument panel is also a square screen – with speeds displayed digitally. That might be the most normal part of the Cactus interior. The rest seems like it was designed in reverse. There’s the so-called “aircraft-style” handbrake, which is massive and looks more like an automatic transmission shifter. That’s a bit confusing, because the

automatic shifter looks more like an airconditioning control. There are buttons for selecting Drive or Reverse and another round knob in the middle for selecting Neutral. Citroen describes the front seats as “sofa style” – meaning they are unusually flat and wide – but still comfortable. While the front windows are electric, the two windows in the rear are “pop out” style – apparently to help reduce the car’s overall weight. The front passenger airbag (one of six in the Cactus) is also unusual – situated in the

roof above the windscreen, rather than in the dash like most cars. As well as providing a safety curtain, this frees up space for a roomy, eight-litre glove box on the dash. The Cactus will be available in two basic models Down Under – one with a super-efficient three-cylinder, 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine – mated exclusively to a five-speed manual; the second a 1.6-litre tubo-diesel with a six-speed semi-automatic as the sole option. But with an endless number of customisable features, no two vehicles are

alike. In fact Citroen claims a possible 23,184 different Cacti combinations. That’s even more than the 1750 known species of the spiky plant. The car’s automatic transmission, by the way, is another one of those quirky French jobs. It’s actually described by Citroen as “semi-automatic” or automated manual. But instead of smoothly slurred changes between ratios, the Cactus changes gears in a very deliberate, leisurely kind of way. There’s a little pause in acceleration between every gear change as the car gently shifts itself from one gear to the next. It sounds strange (and feels a bit the same way) but, once you’re used to it, actually delivers a serene, relaxing kind of acceleration. Its 0-100km/h acceleration time of 11.9 seconds is very relaxing indeed. We drove both models over a two-week period. The first was in a diesel-engined automatic, the second in the threecylinder version with manual transmission. And once again, it’s a bit contrary – with the smaller engine by far the most engaging to drive. Mind you, it’s clear the Cactus was not built to be a sports car, regardless of your engine choice. But it’s an easy machine to like, particularly once you get used to its individuality. It has character, style and practicality in spades – and while it’s not

cheap it delivers very cost-effective motoring. As for the name? Well, apparently Citroen called it the Cactus for two reasons. The first because its Airbumps repel damage, just like the spikes on a cactus plant. Secondly, because the Cactus requires very little fuel – just as the plant needs very little water. Which, when you think about it, isn’t so silly after all.

CITROEN C4 CACTUS HOW BIG? It’s a compact SUV/wagon – and offers similar space to rivals like the Mazda CX-3 and Honda HR-V. Two adults, two kids (three at a pinch) and a decent whack of gear in the back. Plus it has handy roof-rails if required.

HOW FAST? Not. At all. The diesel automatic has more power but less pace, the three-cylinder turbo petrol is a bit quicker, but not much.

HOW THIRSTY? Both models are particularly frugal. The petrol uses just 4.7L/100km; the diesel is even more thrifty at 3.6L/100km.

HOW MUCH? Not cheap for a vehicle of this size, but nicely equipped and well put together. The petrol starts from $27,790; the diesel is five-grand more.

What to do? What to do? Well the conditions will be perfect on Sunday but not so much the waves. What? Did I hear you say road trip? Yep, northern NSW looks like it will have the goods. The judges are copping it over some bad calls at the moment. Don’t be surprised if Toledo wins as it is now small. Parko is still in the mix but those pesky light weight Brazilians seem to shine in those terrible conditions.

FISHING REPORT with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World

ESTUARY: A fantastic run of bream is working up in the Maroochy and Mooloolah Rivers on the bigger tides this week with plastics working just as well as yabbies and whitebait bounced off the bottom. Flathead are around the area that was sand pumped with a few chopper tailor at the Maroochy Bar. SURF: Bream and dart are moving along Mudjimba Beach with pippies and prawns the best bait. There are a few good whiting taking worms and yabbies at the Twin Waters track, and chopper tailor are providing a bit of action just after dark and in the early mornings using slugs (shiny silver lures) and white bait. OFFSHORE: Go to Old Woman Island for squid with the best results from jigging lures and squid jigs in assorted colours. The Gneerings is firing this week in the early mornings for Maori cod, grassy sweetlip and parrot using mullet fillet and squid. Mixed reef fish are also being taken along The Barwon Banks. FRESHWATER: Lake Baroon, near Maleny, is returning bass on plastics with spinning blades or lures slow trolled from ten to fifteen feet. Borumba is another impoundment working for bass, jew and saratoga on live shrimps, earthworms and a variety of lures and flies, so pack you full arsenal of lures and flies as they can be fickle. Deepwater trolling is returning better quality fish from both Bjelke Petersen and Boondooma Dams and don’t forget the opera house pots for red claw.

SWEET LITTLE LIES Richard O’Leary isn’t a conspiracy theorist – except when it comes to the big sugar cover-up.

’ve had a few conspiracy theories put to me in my time. I’ve even been accused of orchestrating a couple in my role as a communications director for a government in another Australian jurisdiction, but I usually don’t buy into them. The reason? It would be just difficult to carry one out. Not necessarily the nuts and bolts of the deed itself – it’s feasible enough to organise that side of it, the real challenge lies in people resisting the urge to talk about it. This is the reason I believe Lee Harvey Oswald was the lone gunman, that man walked on the moon and that Parramatta really did rort the salary cap despite claims from the more fanatical fans that it was a put up job by the NRL to create the right circumstance for Jarryd Hayne to go to the Titans. But there is a conspiracy theory that I

can sink my sweet tooth into. I was reading recently the sugar industry paid scientists in the 1960s to play down the link between sugar and heart disease and blame saturated fat instead. Now that would certainly help explain the obesity epidemic. The conspiracy theory, which was published by a researcher at the University of California in JAMA Internal Medicine, goes something like this. In 1967 a trade group called the Sugar Research Foundation paid three Harvard scientists about $50,000 in today’s dollars to review research on sugar, fat and heart disease. Fair enough you may say, but there was a catch. The studies used by the scientists were picked by the sugar industry. Unsurprisingly the findings, which were published in the influential New England Journal of Medicine, found a strong link between heart disease and saturated fat, while at the same time it minimised the effects of too much sugar in your diet.

Experts in the field of nutrition say the paper derailed the discussion about sugar for decades. In recent years David Gillespie’s book Sweet Poison: Why Sugar Makes Us Fat and Damon Gameau’s documentary That Sugar Film has changed the course of debate, but it may take decades to alter the course of consumption. So how did the sugar industry manage to convince so many for so long without getting caught? After all, at least three people knew the truth. Well it goes back to something even stronger than people’s urge to talk – selfinterest. Every one of those scientists went onto bigger and better things in the field of nutrition, and it wouldn’t have served their careers to speak about the great candy cover up.
