He’s one of the finalists in the 2016 Sunshine Coast Art Prize – and this week’s cover story looks at the extraordinary story of the man behind the art. Looking For A New Mattress?

Don’t Get Ripped Off Discover What’s Actually Inside the Mattress You’re Thinking About Buying… And How to Get a Luxury $6,000 Mattress For Less Than $2,000 Or a Premium $1,200 Mattress For Less Than $400 Many people feel overwhelmed when they walk into a mattress store. There are so many choices. The truth is, it’s designed to be that way. And it gets even worse when the ‘Mattress Consultant’ further bamboozles you with terms like micro-pocket-coils and alternating coil technology. In this article, I’m going to expose the sneaky tricks that mattress manufacturers and retail stores use to get you to pay thousands too much. I’m going to show you the most important things to look for in a new mattress (including the one question you must ask). And how to get a $6,000 mattress for less than $2,000 or a $1,200 mattress for less than $400. But first…

I Have A Confession To Make My brother and I own 4 mattress stores in Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast, and a mattress factory at Sumner Park. So naturally, we’d love you to buy your mattress from us. But more than that, we want to make sure you get a mattress you’ll love – a genuinely high-quality mattress that will last for years – without getting ripped off. You see, we meet people every day who are totally confused about mattresses. And people who feel disappointed (even angry) because they paid thousands for their last mattress and it has not lasted. So we’re on a mission to expose the industry scams. And it starts by telling you…

What’s Actually Inside the Mattress You’re Thinking About Buying The core of most mattresses is made from one of two types of springs. The fi rst type uses lengths of wire formed into hourglass shapes, connected by rows of spiral (helical) wire and held together by a wire hoop at the top and bottom. These are often called Bonnell Springs. But no matter what name mattress stores use, this traditional style of wire spring is essentially the same. In fact, most are made by one company and shipped in compressed form to mattress companies all around the world. The second type of spring is called a Pocket Spring. This is where each spring is wrapped in a thin layer of fabric and moves independently to minimize partner disturbance. Pocket Spring mattresses often come with heavier springs in the middle of the bed to give extra support for your hips (3 zone). Don’t be fooled by sales people who tell you 5 or 7 zones are better. This is just a gimmick to get you to pay more for a mattress. Likewise, don’t be fooled by people who tell you more springs are better. The more springs a mattress has, the smaller and thinner those springs have to be (and potentially weaker). But I suppose when someone is trying to sell you a $6,000 mattress, 4,000 springs sounds better than 1,000, even if it’s not true. Pocket Spring mattresses tend to cost a little more than Bonnell Spring mattresses but offer a genuine advantage in terms of less partner disturbance.

What About Edge Support In order to maintain support right to the edges, an extra piece of wire can be connected to the top and bottom hoops of a Bonnell Spring mattresses and a strong foam box can be added to a Pocket Spring Mattress. Edge supports add genuine benefi t because they allow you to sleep or sit right on the edge of the bed without the side collapsing.

Edge supports should add around $100 to the price of a Bonnell Spring mattress and around $200 to the price of a Pocket Spring mattress depending if the support goes all the way around or if it is just added to the sides.

What’s On Top Of The Springs? Most mattresses have a layer of felt directly on top of the springs. But many manufacturers skimp by using very thin felt or only putting felt on one side of the springs. We use heavy grade felt that provides a solid base for comfort layers. On top of the felt you’ll fi nd a variety of comfort layers — usually a combination of foam or latex and sometimes other natural materials like wool. This is by far the most expensive part of a mattress and the reason luxury mattresses cost more. But don’t be fooled. No matter what type of foam or latex (or what fancy name a manufacturer gives their comfort layers), it should never add thousands to the price of a mattress.

The Truth About Different Foams Listen carefully because this is one of the most important things you need to know when choosing a mattress. The type of foam used in a mattress will not only affect its feel, it will signifi cantly affect the longevity of the mattress. Foams are measured in two ways. Firstly there is the feel – hard or soft. Then there is the density – high or low. The feel is what makes one mattress appear plush and another fi rm. The density is what makes one foam last longer than another. You can get a soft mattress in low or high density. Density does not affect the feel. But it will make a big difference to how long your mattress will last. Density is what costs the money. So before you buy a mattress, be sure to ask about the density of the foams inside. The fi rst layer (on top of the felt) is usually the low-est density (2025kg/m2 is usually fi ne for this layer). But many manufacturers continue to use low density (20kg/m2 or lower) for the top comfort layers. While you won’t notice this when you fi rst feel your new mattress, it will become obvious as the foam breaks down and you end up sleeping in a hollow (sometimes as quickly as just a few months).

What About Memory and Gel Foams? Memory foam is a term used to describe foams that have a slow ‘bounce’. In other words, once depressed, they take a few seconds to regain their original shape. Gel foam is a term used to describe foam that is infused with a special gel substance. Both memory and gel foams feel similar to touch. But because some people complain memory foams are hot to sleep on (due to the fact you tend to sink into the foam more), the addition of gel particles encourages air fl ow and a cooler sleeping surface. Although used as a marketing gimmick by many manufacturers, we do see some benefi t in using gel infused memory foam if you tend to feel hot when you sleep.

What About Latex? Unlike memory foam that has a slow ‘bounce’ latex returns to its original shape very quickly. This doesn’t mean latex feels hard to sleep on. Quite the contrary, latex has quite a plush feel. But unlike memory foam which causes you to sink into the bed, latex supports you on the surface.

What About Pillow Top? The term pillow top refers to the extra comfort layers usually only on one side of the mattress. This provides an extra soft sleeping surface for those who like a plush feel. Once again, the most important thing is what is inside the pillow top – namely, the density of foam. A low density foam may feel luxurious at fi rst, but as it breaks down you may feel like you are sleeping in a hollow.

What About Non-Flip Mattresses? In some ways, this is another industry gimmick. The fact that most people don’t like to fl ip their mattress each month has lead manufacturers to say things like ‘non-fl ip technology’. What this really means is that the mattress only has comfort layers on one side. So in a way, this has enabled manufacturers to save money on manufacturing while charging more. A mattress that can be fl ipped will generally last twice as long as a single side mattress (provided you do actually fl ip it).

What About The Plush Top? Some people like the look and feel of the ‘cloud-like’ comfort layers incorporated into the quilting of some mattresses. The problem is, this layer usually fl attens quickly. Some salespeople say, “Your mattress will settle and mould to your body shape over time.” The truth is, the fl uffy quilting is simply get-ting fl at. We advise against plush quilting because if you like the plush feel, you will soon be disappointed as the quilting fl attens. If you do like a particularly soft surface layer, we recommend inserting a thin layer of high density memory foam in the quilting.

What About Mattresses That Cost $3,000, $5,000 and Even $10,000? As you now know, the internal components of most mattresses are pretty much the same. And the most important part is the comfort layers (i.e. the density / quality of the foam). But no matter what fancy names are given to a mattress or it’s components – including terms relating to the type or number or springs – if you’re paying $6,000 for a mattress, we think you are being ripped off.

NATURAL BORN ARTIST A paintbrush placed in Pomona artist Jandamarra Cadd’s hand became a magic wand that changed his life. WORDS: Candice Holznagel

he 16-year-old boy lay on the floor, shielding his body as best he could. The only thought going through his mind – as his teenage frame took beating after beating – was to die. It’s the shameful story heard too often of our country’s juvenile detention centres. And, it is a memory that has haunted Sunshine Coast artist Jandamarra Cadd. It is also how he gained empathy and a desire to help share a powerful message. During a lifetime, you are lucky to have someone cross your path – even if it is for a fleeting moment – who leaves a uniquely strong and positive imprint in your life. Cadd is one of these people. He is a rarity – a person who leave you with such an impression he restores your faith in the human race with a simple conversation. Cadd’s gentle voice is pure; his words warming and intelligent. For this Sunshine Coast father of three, the journey to this point has not been without its difficulties. His name, which means ‘Spiritual Warrior’ could not be more fitting.

Cadd is a survivor of sexual, physical and emotional abuse. His childhood is one tinted with pain and raw emotion. And, if it was not for one kind counsellor – a brief ray of sunshine in an otherwise dark storm – Cadd is confident he would not be the man he is today. “I’d be dead or in jail.” The artist, who is now recognised as one of Australia’s best painters of Indigenous works, is honest and open about his past. “It was 27 years ago,’’ he says of the day he was first handed a paintbrush. “I had a very troubled upbringing with sexual abuse and I took off and lived on the streets. I was locked in juvenile institutions, had emotional and mental problems and issues. I was introduced to a paintbrush. That transformed my life.” Cadd was born in Brisbane to an Aboriginal mother and a father of ScottishNorwegian heritage. That alone did not come without its problems. His mother “taught him to be white’’ – a confusing concept for a child. “I took off from home at the age of 12 and lived on the streets. I was very angry,’’ Cadd says.

“For me it wasn’t the sexual abuse – that was from an uncle who came to stay with us – it was more being Aboriginal. In the 70s being Aboriginal, it was a very racist society. I felt unheard and was in a society that I was not catered for. “I felt worlds apart. We don’t use this term, but people classified me as a ‘halfcaste’. I always struggled with that. “It led me to a lot of frustration, a lot of

I didn’t have a voice and couldn’t articulate that. “I was left with that anger, ended up in a lot of violent situations, fighting a lot… sleeping in drain pipes, sleeping under railway sleepers, eating out of garbage bins.” Cadd began stealing, which landed him

in juvenile centres. “At the start I was stealing for food. When you are 13, 14, 15-years-old, no one is going to help you out. For Aboriginal people as a collective, things are slowly changing. “At that time, your life is based on survival. You don’t have the capacity to take things for granted… it’s almost like you are in a battle.’’ Between the ages of 13 and 17, Cadd spent time in different institutions before finding himself in the Westbrook Youth Detention Centre – a facility which was closed down in 1994 and subsequently among those investigated as part of the 1998 Commission of Inquiry into Abuse of Children in Queensland Institutions. “Myself and four other Aboriginal inmates broke out and took off,’’ Cadd recalls of his troubling time there. “When they recaptured us they put us in the pod. It was an isolation ward, no toilets, no beds, just a bucket to urinate and defecate in. “We were locked in there for weeks. “One night the staff member was there giving me a beating, I was lying there and you just want to die. COVER STORY counsellor in because I was withdrawn and not talking… that counsellor put a paintbrush in my hand.” Cadd says dealing with the transgenerational trauma and other aspects of being an Indigenous youth living on the streets were a big part of his struggle. These issues, which face Aboriginal people on a daily basis, are from where Cadd’s artistic inspiration flows. In addition to his paintings, he is an advocate for Indigenous rights and shares his message not only through his works, but with guest speaking appearances. He believes people of all races or sexual orientation should be treated equally. His children and wife are also a driving force behind his success and determination for equal rights. “Everything I do in my life and wish to do… is about creating a future that is more welcoming or warming for these guys to live in. Because they have more melanin in their skin does not mean they are less than. I’m trying to break down those barriers so people can see they are human beings.’’ He isn’t afraid to express his concerns for his children’s future but does acknowledge that the Australian people have reached a turning point. “I think it (racism) still exists today but I think things are slowly changing and opportunities are opening up and more people are questioning and not saying I believe everything the media are saying about the dirty boongs over there. “The more conscious and aware people become and say ‘this is not the truth’… the more I can see that my children are given opportunities that I didn’t have, my mother or grandmother didn’t have. “Back when I was young, my mum was teaching me to be white. If she taught me to be white, the more you got ahead in the system. You had to be embarrassed and ashamed to call yourself Aboriginal.” Cadd’s message comes through his artwork, but it is a message he doesn’t want to force upon people. “I don’t want to come at people like that. I want to show them we are all inclusive, not

us versus you. I use dots… some paintings I use much more colour because I want people to come up before they recognise an Aboriginal child. “I try to do it in ways that reach them on a universal level and then their conditional mind comes in at a level. “I’m always trying to find the balance so it’s not all light and happy, but not all heavy.

Sorry is if a friend passes away, you say sorry, it’s empathy.” His latest piece, entitled Radiance is emotive, raw and intelligent – reasons it has been chosen as one of 40 finalists in the 2016 Sunshine Coast Art Prize. It is not the first accolade a Cadd painting has received. This year he was named as a finalist in The Percival Portrait Painting Prize and in 2014, a finalist in the prestigious The Archibald Prize.

His use of dots in artwork is not only aesthetically appealing but used to symbolise his heritage. “Aboriginal people use dots as an aerial point of view… dot paintings are often done as an above perspective looking at the land,’’ Cadd explains. “They are looking at the land not as a separate entity but as part of who they are.’’ Radiance features a little girl from Arnhem Land, Tamika, who is the daughter of a family friend. “Colour for me is something I endeavour to use in a lot of my pieces,’’ Cadd adds. “It bypasses people’s intellect… it moves us inside.’’ Celebrating its 11th year, the 2016 Sunshine Coast Art Prize received more than 625 entries from across the country and offers a total prize pool of more than $35,000 across three categories. Cadd says the Prize is fast becoming one of Australia’s most recognisable art events. “From where I sit, the SCAP is up there with the big ones. I feel honoured to be included as a finalist. It’s a great thing for our community to have a prestigious art prize event, as it not only puts the Sunshine Coast on the radar nationally with artists, galleries and media, but also internationally when those artists exhibit and sell overseas. “The Sunshine Coast is so rich with creative talent and it’s a wonderful opportunity to showcase that, especially with the local artist’s landscape prize. I also feel it can be a great inspiration for young and budding artists to vision where they could end up with their talent if they give focus and devotion to their creations.” For Cadd, he will continue to share his message through colour and is eternally grateful for his second chance at life. He is forever thankful to the woman who handed him a paintbrush all those years ago. “There are millions and millions of choices we are faced with and I choose to love that hurt, that pain, rather than run from it and be a slave to it. What gives me strength is my kids, my family, people who are a part of what we are – a movement to the acceptance of humanity.’’

SUNSHINE COAST ART PRIZE The 40 finalists will be showcased at the Sunshine Coast Art Prize exhibition to be held at Caloundra Regional Gallery from August 18 to October 2. The Sunshine Coast Art Prize 2016 winner will receive a $25,000 cash prize sponsored by Audi Centre Sunshine Coast and Sunshine Coast Council, plus an artist residency, sponsored by Montville Country Cabins. HOW SMART CAN A SMARTPHONE GET? Samsung’s latest smartphone, complete with an iris scanner for improved security, is the most intelligent phone it has created. The Galaxy Note 7 comes with a stylus – called the S Pen – to use on the phone’s 5.7-inch screen. The S Pen has also been given a range of new features compared to previous generations of the Note, including uding the ability to translate words on-screen from and into a series of languages nguages when hovered over text. It has also been made fully waterproof roof for the first time, as is the Note 7 itself. QLD POLICE TRIAL MISSING PERSONS APP Queensland Police are trialling a missing persons app for their smartphones, which will allow police to take missing persons reports without the need for people to visit a station. Each week police receive an average of 100 missing persons reports across the state. Each report requires detailed information including photos, physical descriptions, social media information and family contacts. The Missing Persons App will allow officers to capture details at the scene. Tasks will also immediately be set and should an Amber Alert need to be activated, the officer will be given immediate access to the relevant process to ensure information is broadcast promptly across the whole of the QPS, relevant government agencies and where necessary, to the community. Following the trial and evaluation, it is envisaged the app will be rolled out to all police equipped with smartphones across the state.

ECCENTRIC CHILE South America’s Santiago is intriguing and the gateway to a cultural heartland. By Sarah Marshall

xperimental restaurants, a sophisticated arts scene and a general, all-round nod to eccentricity make Chile’s mountain-fringed capital one of the most intriguing cities in South America. Small enough to discover in a long weekend, Santiago is made up of several easily navigable neighbourhoods, all radiating their own special character. Considered a cultural heartland, the leafy Lastarria district offers pleasant pavement cafes and distinctive boutique hotels, many housed in the few colonialstyle buildings spared by a succession of devastating earthquakes. Influenced by neoclassical French architecture, the grand Singular Santiago is one of the most spacious and atmospheric hotels in the city. Sip coffee in an elegantly cluttered lounge supervised by waiters attired in smart waistcoats, or zip right up to the 21st century at the hip rooftop cocktail bar. Many museums and historical buildings can be found in the 16th century Plaza de Armas, the city’s main square, where old men furrow brows over games of chess beneath the shadow of the ornate 18th century Metropolitan Cathedral. But a more offbeat attraction is La Chascona (“wild mane of hair”), the house built in the mid-1950s by Nobel Prizewinning poet Pablo Neruda for his lover Matilde, who had striking curly red locks. Like the man himself, the property is wonderfully eccentric: a secret doorway links the dining area and bedroom, allowing the host to surprise guests or disappear for a quick nap; and decorations include an enormous pair of men’s brogues, once used by a shoe shop to advertise their wares to the illiterate.

HORSE RIDE ACROSS THE PATAGONIAN STEPPE Patagonia’s vast, windswept steppe and jagged granite mountains are a playground for outdoor enthusiasts. But softer souls can also enjoy the environment, without having to pitch a tent or set up a portaledge. The town of Puerto Natales, located in Chilean Patagonia and close to the popular Torres del Paine National Park, benefits from several upmarket and ambitious design hotels. The Singular Patagonia (sister to their

Santiago property) is set within the walls of a former early 20th-century abattoir, where heavy, iron British-made machinery is still displayed in a walk-through museum. A five kilometre distance from town, the property has its own pier with boat trips operating to the fjords. Aside from trekking in Torres del Paine (a one-hour-and-20-minute drive away), visitors can take a horse-riding excursion to nearby Sierra Dorotea. Led by a gaucho wearing a traditional boina beret and characteristically nonchalant expression, riders on hardy Criollo horses venture up the grassy mountainside to sheer drop viewpoints and forests burned silver by 70 kilometres per hour gusts. The experience ends in a lichen-draped clearing, with the ritual of lighting a fire and drinking traditional mate. A small gourd filled with herbal tea literally does the rounds, passed around until the last person says thank you, a signal they’ve had enough.

Glaciers cover 2.7 per cent of Chile’s long, snaking surface, and dipping into the country’s icy fjords is made easy on a short four-day/three-night cruise. A family business for more than three decades, the Skorpios III navigates the Southern Patagonian Ice Field. Sailing from Puerto Natales, a city close to top tourist attraction Torres del Paine and one of the key access points to Patagonia, the Kaweskar voyage sidles up to the honeycomb ridges of Amalia Glacier, deposits passengers on the rocks close to El Brujo Glacier, and salutes a cavalcade of frozen behemoths along the Calvo Fjord. The trip continues north to the Montanas Fjord, where multicoloured icebergs crack and hiss in a bay below Herman Glacier, and moraine-soiled peaks of Alcina Glacier resemble baked tips of a lemon meringue pie. Weather in the fjords is generally dull and rainy, but grey skies actually cast these icy showstoppers in their best light, bringing out their characteristic blue hues. At least, that’s what Captain Kochifas and his optimistic staff say to passengers.

TAKE A BALLOON RIDE ABOVE THE ATACAMA DESERT Stretching more than 4000 kilometres, Chile spans extremes of temperature and topography. In the north lies the Atacama Desert, one of the driest places on Earth, where surreal rock formations, sky-soaring geysers and shimmering white salt flats have sparked a growing tourist industry. Most resorts are based around the town of San Pedro on a plateau 2400 metres above sea level. At the Alto Atacama Desert Lodge & Spa, low-lying cabins are set against a backdrop that flips between flaming red rocks and diamond-studded, starry skies as the clock turns from day to night. Activities bookend the day, with lunches and spa treatments in between. Hike through the Dali-esque dunes of the Valley of the Moon, watch flamingoes settle on the Atacama Salt Flats, or study stars through a telescope on the hotel’s observation deck. myweeklypreview.com.au

hile Brexit triggered a drop in the pound, it appears to have also caused a separation between currencies deemed to be either safe or risky. Among safe currencies, the US dollar (USD) and Japanese yen appreciated. Among riskier currencies, emerging market currencies depreciated, including the Chinese renminbi. The outlook for the RBA cash rate still suggests a lower AUD/USD. However, given the prospect of a slower Federal Reserve and portfolio effects post-Brexit (more unhedged buying of Australian dollar fixed income), the decline in AUD/USD is starting from a higher level. A new spring fashion trend is every mum's best friend, says Sami Muirhead.

We need to treat mental illness as seriously as we treat cancer and heart disease, writes Richard Bruinsma.

MG, BFs! OTS is huge! Do you have any idea what I just typed? Oh my god, best friends. Off the shoulder is huge. Until this past week I had clearly been living under a rock, because when my cool fashionista friend sent me a text about the OTS being an essential part of our wardrobes this spring, I had no idea what she was talking about. I racked my shallow brain trying to work it out: Ordered To Shop? Off To Spend? On The Shiraz (again)? I gave up trying to decipher the code and laughed out loud when I was told OTS refers to those necklines that are everywhere this season, making us look like German beer wenches or French girls in the south of Provence. And here is why you should be embracing the OTS look, girlfriend. It draws attention to your collarbone. Let’s think about that trend. It is not about micro-minis that draw attention to the tops of our legs. It is not about the cropped top that draws attention to our muffin tops. I say ‘our’ muffin tops because I do believe there is a sisterhood of the muffin top here on the Coast. It’s genius. Show a bit of shoulder and hey presto, it’s a sexy and feminine look. The OTS is the friend of mamas. I have not followed fashion trends for years now, but this clever little tip is a good one. Our collarbones don’t expand from too many wines and slabs of Camembert. Our collarbones don’t get stretch marks from

bearing children. Our collarbones may just be about a girl’s best secret weapon. Nikki Parkinson is my clever fashion loving friend I spoke of earlier. ental illness remains perhaps the most under-recognised health challenge in Australia. This is in spite it being extraordinarily common and having significant far-reaching impacts on society. It causes death – through suicide and murder – family breakup, feelings of lack of worth, frustration and heartache, significant lost working days and many cases of unachieved potential. One in five Australians will suffer mental illness this year. That compares to one in six affected by heart disease, one in six men diagnosed with prostate cancer by 85, one in eight women contracting breast cancer by 85, one in 10 Australians living with symptoms of kidney disease, one in 14 men and one in 24 women suffering melanoma at some point, and one in 17 at risk of lung cancer by age 85. These health crises have benefited from public education campaigns at least partly funded by government. Given the prevalence of mental illness, perhaps it is time it benefits from a new, intensive and ongoing campaign to increase awareness and better improve detection and treatment. As mental illness is often without apparent visible symptoms, it carries the stigma that those suffering might be putting

it on or, in many cases, simply weak of mind. Ensuring it becomes a mainstream discussion topic to become better understood and accepted as a genuine condition, is a vital step. The battle against depression, anxiety, lethargy, social exclusion, stress and feelings of failure is too much for some. Every two days a tradesman takes his own life and the high rate of farmer suicide has also been in the news recently. I also heard a story of a young man suffering complications from mental illness who had a medical certificate from his specialist rejected by his employer. Mental illness is not a joke. It is debilitating and isolating. And all this is made worse by any failure of society to acknowledge the problem and contribute to the solutions. Just like breast cancer, heart disease, lung cancer and melanoma, mental illness must transition to a common conversation topic to give sufferers the freedom to speak out and get the help and support they need. Governments – it's time for us to step up and attack this issue with more gusto. And readers – if you feel in any way that life is getting too burdensome, and you see no reason for optimism and hope, understand there is help available. Talk to your friends and a GP.

There are probably not too many people on the Sunshine Coast who know why the Hotel Caloundra, or CBX as it is these days, plays such an important part in our region’s history. It was at the Bulcock Street pub where the local branch of the Real Estate Institute of Queensland coined the name ‘Sunshine Coast’ which then, in 1967, became the official identity for our region. It was also at CBX where I recently had the honour of ringing the pub’s old bell to signal the start of the one-year countdown to the 50th Anniversary of the Naming of the Sunshine Coast – a significant milestone and a chance for us to reflect on our rich and vibrant history. During our 50th Anniversary year in 2017, we will celebrate our identity as a region and pay tribute to our community members and groups who have helped to shape us along the way. We’ll also look forward to a very bright future for our region. RECORD YEAR FOR OUR AIRPORT Sunshine Coast Airport has finished an incredible year of achievements on a high, once again breaking passenger number records and topping national growth charts. The 12 months from July 1, 2015 to June 30, 2016 saw 964,362 passengers use Sunshine Coast Airport – a 13 per cent increase year on year and the highest recorded passenger numbers for a 12-month period. Mayor Mark Jamieson welcomed the news, saying it highlighted the strong progress the airport had made throughout the financial year. “We continue to see month after month of strong figures, and a sequence of records from our airport, which is outstanding news for our local economy,” Mayor Jamieson said “July was the 13th month of consecutive year-on-year growth, clearly demonstrating the increased desire by locals and visitors to use the flight services available at our facility. “We are continuing to improve our

airport for our customers and to meet the increased demand, we have recently completed an enhancement of the passenger security screening area, adding a second lane to be utilised during peak periods.” Sunshine Coast Airport general manager Peter Pallot said it had been an amazing 12 months. The 2015/16 year saw the introduction of Qantas services to the Sunshine Coast, increased capacity by Jetstar and Virgin Australia on Sydney and Melbourne routes, and the operation of direct summer services to Auckland by Air New Zealand. Growth at Sunshine Coast Airport is expected to continue with the commencement of direct Adelaide services by Jetstar from September 30 this year, and Qantas tapping into the Melbourne premium leisure market with the introduction of services for the peak summer period.

CLASSICAL DUET Violin virtuoso, Attilla Sautov will join guest German pianist, Oleg Poliansky, for two classical music performances. Sautov has resided in Australia for 10 years following a successful international solo career. This will be the final concert in his recent extensive tour of more than 40 venues in Queensland and New South Wales. With Poliansky, Sautov will perform duets, including Massenet’s Meditation from the Opera Thais, plus works by Bach, Handel, Gluck, Mozart and Paganini.

Australian rockers Mental As Anything have graced music stages, radio airwaves and television screens for close to 40 years. With 12 album releases between 1979 and 2009, Mental As Anything can call themselves art pop pioneers – blending left-of-centre lyricism, soul and rock into a distinctively Australian context. Now, the boys have announced a new chapter in their story with the release of two singles under a new partnership with Universal Music Australia. Band member Greedy Smith says the group is excited to re-launch their sound in the digital age. “We are pumped to release five of our most important studio albums in a set. This coincides with our first new recordings in many years.”

Whether as volunteers or in the workforce, seniors utilise their experiences and knowledge as carers, grandparents and community leaders,” says COTA Queensland chief executive Mark Tucker-Evans. “For some living in rural and remote communities, Seniors Week is the one time of year they get to connect with long lost friends. “For others, Seniors Week is a way to assist in combating social isolation through the discovery of programs and activities, creation of new friendships and in remaining an active member of society.” “We appreciate that Seniors Week can only be a success through the hard work and efforts of people and organisations throughout the state. ictoria University researchers are studying the benefits of exercise parks designed to improve the strength, flexibility and balance of older adults. Stimulating, functional activities, lots of fun and socialising with friends in the great outdoors are just some of the benefits of specifically designed exercise parks, says associate professor Pazit Levinger and PhD researcher and exercise physiologist Myrla Sales. “We found that people in the 18-week exercise group experienced significant improvement in strength, balance and function,” says Sales. “We also concluded that using the park helps reduce the physiological risk of falling,” she says. Around 35 per cent of people over the age of 65 fall at least once a year. The effects can be devastating and often result in loss of independence and autonomy, decreased social contact, depression and anxiety. The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare estimates that the annual cost of hospital care related to falls is around $648.2 million. Exercise parks for older adults are quite usual in the northern hemisphere and the results of the first stage of Levinger’s research team indicate they would be beneficial here.

The VU research used equipment manufactured by Finnish company Lappset and the park was installed at Villa Maria Catholic Homes’ St Bernadette aged care home in Sunshine North, near Melbourne. “The parks also offer the welldocumented benefits of being out in the fresh air, of being social and doing something you enjoy,” says Sales. People exercise in pairs with techniques designed to keep them active, enjoying their lives, and coping easily with daily demands such as chores, shopping and gardening. Several pieces of equipment address each aspect of fitness. For example, participants working on their balance can use a balance stool, a suspended gangway, a balance beam or a ramp and net. “Our findings indicate that there is a case for a larger study and we are now looking for partners for the design of the next trial,” Levinger says. – AAP

Not tucked away in the upper deck of some A380. But in a car. The new Maserati Quattroporte GTS. The flying part isnâ€™t strictly true. Low flying, perhaps. But this wondrous big Italian sports limousine most certainly gives a new meaning to high speed, first class travel.

The supple leather and the gloriously polished timber is equal to anything youâ€™d find at the pointy end of an A380. The flying part? Well, that happens when you plant your right foot in this plush Italian executive express - the biggest, fastest and most luxurious four-door machine ever produced by the Modena marque. Just as with sitting in seat 1A, the chance to do some low flying in a Quattroporte is a privilege extended to relatively few. If you have to ask how much, you probably canâ€™t afford it.

The flagship GTS model tested here comes with a pricetag starting at $331,000, plus onroad costs. Even the most affordable Quattroporte â€“ one propelled by a sixcylinder turbo-diesel engine â€“ costs $210,000. The Quattroporte has led the transition to a new style of powerplant â€“ a smaller capacity, 3.8 litre V8 whose outputs are boosted by two turbochargers. The result is an extraordinary well of power â€“ 390kW and 710Nm of torque. Maserati boasts that it delivers classleading power to weight ratio in this very exclusive sliver of the new car market. Pushed to its limits, it will achieve the Australian highway speed limits in just 4.7 sonorous seconds. The Quattroporte is an imposing vehicle in many ways â€“ not least its sheer dimensions. We couldnâ€™t fit it into our regular-sized garage because of its length, so it sat, rather unceremoniously, on our driveway when not in use. At the wheel, youâ€™d never guess itâ€™s such a big, relatively heavy machine. The Maserati is nimble and well-grounded. Keep the key anywhere on your person and you need only touch the door handle to unlock the car. Once youâ€™re inside, the Quattroporte delivers on the promise of those long, sleek exterior lines. Itâ€™s plush but still classy, luxurious yet understated. Most cockpit functions are now handled

via the intuitive touch-screen in the centre dash â€“ everything from audio and satellite navigation to interior functions like switching on the seat heaters or raising the rear privacy blind. To help navigate these tasks, Maserati has enlisted the help of Siri â€“ the worldâ€™s favourite personal assistant. The back seats of the Quattroporte, as you might imagine â€“ are a pleasant place to be. This is, after all, the limousine of choice for most well-heeled Italians.

MASERATI QUATTROPORTE GTS HOW BIG? Extremely â€“ one of the biggest luxury machines on the market. Yet it accelerates, handles, turns and brakes like the most agile of sports cars.

HOW FAST? With a top speed of 307km/h, it must be tempting to forget the airport queues when taking a long trip, particularly on those European motorways. In Australia, it will reach the speed limit in 4.7 seconds.

HOW THIRSTY? Downsizing its engine capacity to 3.8 litres, boosted by twin turbochargers, means a scaled-down thirst of just over 10L/100km. Its emissions meet strict European standards. HOW MUCH? The GTS will set you back $331,000.

HISTORIC LOW The Reserve Bank of Australia’s decision to cut its official cash rate by 25 basis points to 1.75 per cent has not come without controversy. The historic low signals the first interest rate change since May 2015, when the RBA cut rates to two per cent. Last week I did the road trip to northern NSW – certainly noticed how few people were in the water over shark concerns. Ha! Made my stand up board a good option. What impressed me most was watching a Logger/Mal pick off a wave from outside the pass, get two barrels, then ride right into Clarkes caravan park. Now that peeps is a very, very, very long wave. So it is August and the EKKA is on so where are the west winds? Crazy times! Oh, there has been a seal sighting down at Moffat Beach. Be cool and give him space! They do have sharp teeth!

ESTUARY: Quality whiting are taking yabbies along the Twin Waters banks on the night high tide. Bream and flathead are taking whitebait at the southern end of Goat and Channel Islands. You can get trevally and chopper tailor at the motorway bridge on lures. SURF: There are dart and sand whiting on pippies at the Maroochy Bar. You can get tailor and flathead along Maroochy North Shore and between the sand bag walls on the southern side beach at Maroochy, using whitebait and small baby blue pillies. There are shovel nosed rays and sharks at Alexandra Headland - mullet fillet is the best bait. OFFSHORE: Water temp is 20 degrees. The close in reefs are best for Maori cod, moses perch, squire and sweetlip with snapper, pearl perch and trevally on the Barwon Banks. There are spanner crabs east of Coolum. Mackerel has been caught off Coolum this week. FRESHWATER: Somerset Dam is working well for bass, golden perch and jew with live shrimps and deep divers best. Bjelke-Petersen Dam is also good for bass and golden perch with red claw thrown in as well. Locally, Lake Macdonald and Borumba have both been returning saratoga, bass and Mary River cod on flies and lures.

Richard O’Leary searches the world’s languages for a word to describe someone who doesn’t feel the cold.

“N

esh” is the word used to describe someone who especially feels the cold – think of a person who starts to shiver after being handed a cold drink on a hot day. The word is commonly used in parts of England such as Staffordshire, the East Midlands, Lancashire, South Yorkshire and Shropshire. You can also hear it in Newfoundland. But as far as I can ascertain, there is no equivalent descriptor for someone who doesn’t feel the cold. This anomaly came to me as my son strode into school on a bitterly cold morning wearing just a T-shirt and shorts. I mean, we have weird words to describe just about everything else on the planet. The German kummerspeck for excess weight gained from emotional overeating. Translated literally it means ‘grief bacon’. Or the Italian words for attempting to

revive an unworkable relationship – cavoli riscaldati, roughly translated as ‘reheated cabbage’. And, mamihlapinatapai, which in Tierra del Fuego’s Yaghan language describes the shared look between two people, when both

born child, came one day alongside the vessel and remained there out of mere curiosity, whilst the sleet fell and thawed on her naked bosom, and on the skin of her naked baby.” Sleet fell and thawed. Now that’s as un-nesh as you get. But they are not the only ones. What about the Japanese pearl divers who spend long periods in freezing water without wetsuits? All this talk about feeling the cold reminds me of my first conversation with the principal at my boys’ school. She told me she bumped into a small girl on the coldest of winter mornings who was just wearing a thin dress. “Aren’t you cold?” the principal asked. “No, you are,” she said before walking off. That says it all really. It’s really about me, not my son.
