he one time I was on stage at school was for a minor role where I managed to forget my only line. So I’m in awe of the 6000 students who are about to become part of the region’s biggest performance – the annual Sunshine Coast Junior Eisteddfod. This event gets no funding and is run by volunteers – so how does it manage to come together every year? We sent Candice Holznagel to find out – and that’s our cover story for this edition. This week you also get to meet two extraordinary locals: 77-year-old Dr Gus Ferguson, who has just retired after dedicating his life to easing the chronic pain of his patients through revolutionary medical methods, and Brian Day, a Maleny man who has gone above and beyond to care for people with AIDS and advocate for gay rights. WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON?

The day I met Elisabeth Kübler-Ross in Ipswich. It lead to my caring for people with AIDS. She took me under her wing. It’s interesting that she, who was world famous at the time for palliative care, decided I was suitable to do the training, even though I wasn’t a doctor or psychologist.

Gay ageing. There’s an ageing and diversity action group on the Sunshine Coast and I’m a member of that. The goals are to make sure LGBTI people get appropriate care and the staff of aged care facilities are trained to deal with the specific needs of LGBTI people.

YOUR GREATEST REGRET?

YOUR FAMILY INCLUDES. . .

Not getting to know my parents better. The sorts of things I would have liked to have known about them just weren’t talked about in those days – relationships, sexuality, cultural background. One lot of grandparents were migrants from Poland via Manchuria. I spoke Polish with my grandmother till I was 15.

WHAT ACHIEVEMENT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF? My 34-year relationship with Ian.

Dulcie. In the ‘60s in the camp scene it was traditional for people to have a name from the opposite gender. It was an underground way of dealing with confidentiality and things like that.

FIRST CAR? Toyota Corolla. I was 30 before I got my first car. We didn’t have cars in Ipswich because just about everybody lived near where they worked.

FAVOURITE BOOK? Society and the Healthy Homosexual by George Weinberg.

FAVOURITE SONG? True Colours by Cyndi Lauper.

BEST ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN? You can be anything you want – by my vocational guidance counsellor when I was 15. It sort of stuck in my subconscious and I think it was there well and truly when I started doing gay activism. I wanted to be a doctor and my father said we couldn’t afford it. I always thought I could go further than the limits placed upon me socially.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED HERE? Twenty-eight years.

WHY DO YOU LIVE HERE? Laidback social life, beautiful scenery, I can go to the beach, I can ogle the Glass House Mountains.

WHERE DO YOU TAKE VISITORS? Shelley Beach – it’s an old hangout from my uni days. I went to the University of Queensland and studied sociology. One of the women I went to uni with, her family had a holiday house just up the road from Shelley Beach. In those days it was really quiet.

IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING ON THE COAST WHAT WOULD IT BE? Duplicate the railway line and maybe put a light rail up and down the coast like they’ve done on the Gold Coast.

BEST DAY IN YOUR LIFE? The day I died for 17 minutes and came back embodied. You go out of your body into the spiritual world and come back into your body. Death is nothing to fear, our soul lives outside time. There is an entity I call God. It’s impossible to describe – some people call it bliss. I’m inclined to call it joy. I also felt gratitude, just gratitude for being alive.

YOU ARE HAPPIEST WHEN? After good sex or talking with a good friend. I just like talking to people.

WHAT FRUSTRATES YOU THE MOST? My pigheadedness. If I have a fight with Ian, it’s usually because I’m not prepared to budge. Usually he’s trying to help me and I just don’t see it as that.

IF YOU COULD TELL YOUR 18 YEAR-OLD SELF ANYTHING, WHAT WOULD IT BE? You’re all right. I knew I was gay from the time I was 14. I also found out quickly I could be put in jail and a lunatic asylum, so I had to maintain the secret. I was very ambivalent about it. In one of my father’s books there was a statement that homosexual behaviour occurred in all mammals so I knew it was natural. I knew on the one hand what people were saying about me was wrong, but on the other hand, all these other things could be applied to me. I became an expert liar, which saved me a lot. I could disguise what was going on. People talk about leading a double life, in fact it’s two parts of the same life that you have to juggle. It’s a lot of stress.

NRL OR AFL? Neither – I’m an individualist so it’s tennis or swimming.

YOUNG TALENT TIME

It’s no mean feat to stage a 20-day event involving 6000 students with no paid staff and no public funding. WORDS: Candice Holznagel

housands of students from right around the region are tuning their instruments and warming up their vocals in preparation for the 49th annual Sunshine Coast Junior Eisteddfod. With 6000 competitors, 225 volunteers and 180 events, the competition is considered one of the most hotly contested eisteddfods in Queensland. So, what exactly goes on behind the scenes to make this extravaganza of music, song and drama a success?

THE ORGANISER Jenny Thomas is one busy woman – there are programs to finalise, volunteers to organise and 46 schools to liaise with. But that’s all part of the territory that comes with being the Sunshine Coast Junior Eisteddfod committee president – a position she is extremely passionate about. You only have to take a look into Thomas’ past to see how the Eisteddfod has played an important role in her life. It was as an enthusiastic and young eight-year-old that Thomas first took a seat behind the piano to play for an 12 My Weekly Preview | July 15, 2016

audience and adjudicator. The Eisteddfod was in its early days and competition was held in Nambour’s Masonic Hall across six days. Today, it encompasses 20 days of competition, with events spread across four different Sunshine Coast venues. “I’ve been on the committee for 34 years,’’ Thomas says, reflecting on the time she has committed to the youth program. “I was actually a local girl who played in the Eisteddfod. I’m a piano player. I would have been around 19 when I joined the committee. “To see it grow to what it is now is amazing. That’s partly because the instrumental groups on the Coast are very strong. The large ensemble section has 46 schools involved and that’s just from the Sunshine Coast area. They can enter in things like the primary concert band section or the string section. It’s

open to primary and secondary groups. “Over 6000 kids walk across the stage. That’s unbelievable growth. It was about 15 years ago when we started the large ensemble section. Before that, we only had individual, duets or up to 12 players in a group. The schools pushed for a competition that they could enter big groups in and it just blossomed

events, the Eisteddfod has its struggles. The committee is searching for more members and funding the event doesn’t come without its difficulties. “It’s such a big event. People don’t realise how huge it is,’’ Thomas says. “The $5 (audience) entry fee helps cover costs but it costs, $55,000 to run the event. It’s mostly from the program and entry fees, which we’ve tried to maintain at the same level of $6 for a long time because we don’t want to make it unaffordable. “When you think there are 6000 kids walking across the stage, and all local, it would be good to have some support.” At the end of the day, the committee hopes to continue the Eisteddfod for another 50 years to provide opportunity to the local children. “The music industry is a very closeknit one here on the Coast,’’ Thomas adds. “People don’t realise the depth of talent. All the adjudicators have said, across all sections, that not only do we have a large number of entries in all sections, but large quantities of good quality.’’

There is a thrill of nervous anticipation and excitement that anyone who has competed in an eisteddfod knows well. It happens in those moments as you stand out of sight in the darkness of the theatre wings. The stage comes alive under the bright lights and you feel the exhilaration coursing through your veins. And then you step into the spotlight and all those hours of practise come to fruition. It’s an exciting experience that lives on as a childhood memory for years to come. For any child or teenager, the chance to share what you love on stage in front of hundreds of people and your peers, is a terrific experience. It’s a feeling 16-year-old Nicole Holland knows well. The Year 11 Matthew Flinders Anglican College student comes from a talented family. She plays the clarinet and piano; her brothers, twins Karl and Justin, 13, sing and play the piano, trumpet and saxophone. The Holland children are familiar faces at the Sunshine Coast Eisteddfod. They have been performing in a range of sections since primary school. On the day we speak, with the Eisteddfod only weeks away, Nicole is sitting in the family home practising her clarinet. Playing music is something she

speaks passionately about. “I try to practise at least five times a week but getting into senior years it’s a bit harder to do practise and work,’’ she says. “I think it (the Eisteddfod) is a good opportunity to practise and perform in front of people. Young people don’t get many opportunities to do that.” Holland says despite years of performance, she still feels nervous when she competes. “I think I definitely do, but it has become easier. The feedback from the adjudicators is helpful to boost your confidence. Having the audience there is both nerve-wracking and exciting. It is a really good opportunity to perform. I would encourage as many people as possible to enter.”

THE EVENT The Sunshine Coast Junior Eisteddfod will be staged from July 21 through to August 8. It will kick off with the four-day piano competition at Lifepoint Centre on Wises Road. The brass and woodwind events and speech and drama sections will begin on Friday, July 29 at Matthew Flinders College and continue through the weekend. The popular large ensemble section, also to be held at the College, will take place from August 1 to 3. The strings events are on August 3 to 5 at the Seventh Day Adventist Hall, Nambour and finish on Saturday, August 6 at Nambour Christian College. Vocals begin on August 5 at the Lifepoint Centre. Full programs are available throughout the Eisteddfod. Audience entry to events costs $5.

QUEENSLAND GARDEN EXPO Nambour Showgrounds, July 8–10 Novice gardeners and seasoned green thumbs formed part of the record crowds that descended on Nambour Showgrounds as part of the 32nd annual Queensland Garden Expo. The Mooloolaba 17-year-old will compete in the 10-kilometre open water swim in Rio, after gaining selection at the FINA Open Water event in Portugal last month. Gubecka will be only the second woman to represent Australia in the event, also known as marathon swimming, to be held this year off the famous Copacabana Beach.

A new era in Australian aeromedical care began this week with CareFlight changing its name to LifeFlight. Chairman Rob Borbidge says the name reflects the growth and renewal phase the company is undergoing. “LifeFlight was chosen because saving lives is what we’re all about and our patient focus and dedication to a total blanket of care for people in their hour of need all around the state won’t change.’’ The organisation has flown 44,000 critical car missions in the past 35 years. In 2015–16, CareFlight flew 1,864 missions from all of its Queensland community helicopter rescue bases. The Sunshine Coast base was one of the busiest, with 511 missions flown.

PIONEERING RADIOLOGIST RETIRES

Interventional radiologist Dr Gus Ferguson says farewell to his team and patients after a remarkable 49-year career. Words: Leigh Robshaw

he decision to retire is not always easy, but it’s particularly difficult when you know people are relying on you to keep them out of pain. It’s why Dr Gus Ferguson, an interventional radiologist with Sunshine Coast Medical Imaging, has had mixed feelings about signing off – even though he’s about to turn 77. Ferguson is an unsung hero on the Sunshine Coast, having virtually pioneered a pain relief technique that has made life worth living for more than 3000 people. Born in New Zealand, he graduated from the University of Otago in 1963 and went to Britain in 1967, where he completed a fellowship in radiology. It was there he witnessed the world’s first CT brain scan at the Atkinson Morley Hospital in London in 1971, on a prototype scanner which took eight seconds per slice and did away with air encephalograms forever. He came to Australia in 1974 and began working in Brisbane. It was in 1990 that he began performing radiofrequency neurotomy, also known as radiofrequency ablation (RFA), which is designed to coagulate the nerve sheath and disable those nerves that transmit pain signals. “As far as I know, no one was using CT guided radiofrequency in Australia at that time,” says Ferguson. “To my knowledge, we have probably led the way using CT for guidance. I was first asked to consider doing this back in 1990 and I initially used fluoroscopy, like the pain specialists, until I realised that having a CT scanner provided great precision. “I’ve often been amazed it hasn’t been utilised more often and isn’t more widespread. Even two years ago, it wasn’t being used in South Australia at all.” Radiofrequency ablation is used to treat certain types of neck pain, thoracic pain and lower back pain. It is also used to treat certain types of headache,

including occipital neuralgia and post whiplash neuralgia. Sacroiliac joint pain can also be treated, as can Morton’s neuroma in the foot, plantar fasciitis, stump neuromas in amputees and a number of other conditions. In carefully selected cases, the success rate is around 75 per cent and it takes about 30 minutes. Those 30 minutes can mean the difference between living with chronic pain, and being able to enjoy a pain-free and active life again. “I’ve done over 1000 in the neck and 2000 in the lumbar spine since 1991,” Ferguson tells My Weekly Preview. “The technique in the cervical spine is one I have refined over the years and it’s a particularly elegant technique. It’s safe and is done under local anaesthetic, without the need for any tranquillisation. “It’s designed to coagulate the nerves

which transmit the pain impulses to the brain – the nerves that come from the facet joints. it can be repeated. “There are very few complications,” he says. “I’ve never had a major complication. It’s not to be taken lightly, however. The neck is more challenging because of the proximity of major vessels, but overall it’s a very safe technique in the right hands. You have to be very precise putting in the electrodes it must be done with great care. That’s why under CT

guidance it’s very safe.” Another technique Ferguson specialises in is pulsed radiofrequency of the dorsal root ganglion in the spine, which has been very successful. With this technique he’s able to use pulsed radiofrequency to modify the pain response from anterior primary ramus nerves. With almost half a century of pain relief work to his credit, it was a tough decision to leave behind his rewarding career, but he’s passing the reins to very capable hands. “My decision to leave has been made so much easier with the enthusiasm and emergence of Dr Sally Johnstone as my exit strategy,” he says. “Sally has been working with me for the past 18 months and I am so impressed with her skills.” Ferguson said goodbye to the team at Sunshine Coast Medical Imaging on June 29 and a week later, headed overseas with his wife for a much-deserved holiday. After visiting Scotland, Orkney, the Shetland Islands, Spain and Portugal, he’ll head home to Mount Ninderry and make the most of his newfound free time by indulging in his passion for woodworking, piano and golf. And he’ll have plenty of time to reflect on a long and successful career in which he was able to make a difference to many lives. “The rewarding part has been the feedback I’ve had from a large number of patients who have had very significant pain relief, sometimes for many years,” he says. “One patient came back every two years for 22 years. It really is quite amazing and very gratifying to see that the technique works so well for so many.” These procedures will continue to be carried out by Dr Johnstone at Sunshine Coast Medical Imaging at the Sunshine Coast Private Hospital.

A little girl with no hair has taught Sami Muirhead it’s not how nice your hair is, but who you are, that makes you beautiful.

lla is a nine-year-old Palmwoods girl who loves to dance and reminds me of a sprightly fairy. The plucky girl is always smiling and nimbly gliding around the place in a full flight of joy. I have learnt a lot from this little girl in the past few years and I am always fascinated by the way she is the first to help much younger children. She is clearly a kind and compassionate soul. But Ella has come a long way from the days when her self-confidence was low due to the other kids at kindy asking her why she has no hair and no eyebrows. Ella has alopecia. It is a rare autoimmune disease where the body’s immune system attacks the hair follicles. There is no cure and most people are diagnosed before their 20th birthday. Ella lost all of her hair at a tiny 10 months of age. Ella and her family are thankful to Variety, which helps families pay for life-changing wigs for kids. It is Alopecia Awareness month. The wigs cost around $6000 and last around two years, so it would be feasible for a family to spend $50,000 on hair pieces to get their little ones into adulthood. Ella’s mother, Alanna, says: “You just want your child to have the best life they can have, and seeing Ella so happy and confident wearing her wig has brought us so much pride and joy. The cost of the wig was beyond our family budget, and we are

grateful to everyone who has donated money to Variety to help Ella and so many other children in need.” I have a special soft spot for Ella’s mum. My Iittle boy wears glasses. Her little girl has no hair. We often chat about how kids can be cruel and we hope and pray other children are kind to ours. Variety needs more hair to make more wigs. On a personal note, meeting Ella has made me stop and rethink the comments I make to my daughter about hair being so beautiful. Our society places so much emphasis on the femininity of hair. Barbie, Princess Ariel, Cinderella and the Frozen sisters have thick lustrous hair. It is a strong message that equates beauty with fine flowing locks. Anyone who has lost their hair to cancer would agree that hair is just a physical attribute, and we must teach our kids that message. Better to be kind and full of courage than have Jennifer Aniston’s locks. But I guess it is easy for me to say, as I have a full head of thick hair. I thought I would give the last words to Ella: “What makes someone beautiful is being kind, grateful, helping others and just being a nice person,” says the St Joey’s schoolgirl. here is nothing wrong with robust discussion, dissent, opposing opinions, or even not agreeing to disagree. Any kind of change can be extremely challenging for many people; humans are geared to seek and create routines and patterns, so even good changes are disruptive for a time. Historically, Australian culture has been averse to radical change, despite being a young and relatively isolated country. Communities have a right here to be consulted about change. Yet public debate is generally unpopular and reserved for last-minute, last-stand contexts when naysayers rally to demonstrate. It’s rare that public debate takes place in a staged way to genuinely enable all sides to share their perspective. It’s also extremely rare here that supporters will rally in any way to voice their positive position. It is more common to see a range of pro-groups in other countries who advocate for more or better governance, education, infrastructure, and economic and political change. In my own experience, especially in regional Australia, when councils, government, industry, unions, development or any major project management representatives take a longer-term approach to be inclusive in making major change, the effort is met

with suspicion. People often question the process over the content and scrutinise why you’re knocking on their door, why you’re staging public meetings and information displays, creating websites and distributing mailouts. This judgement creates a circular, protracted and often combative process. Other nations like New Zealand, Canada and Germany do it much better by requiring community involvement up front and shared commitment to resolutions. It doesn’t necessarily require more time or resources, just a change in thinking, from every stakeholder. The real challenge is when everyone’s focus is on the problem or the impacts, rather than on potential outcomes. It is the very basis of community consultation and engagement to involve as many people and interests as possible, to gather input from the outset. The more people involved, the more ideas are raised and examined, and it enables conflicting views to be raised early. It’s not the purpose of community engagement, however, to please everyone. The purpose is to offer opportunities to communicate and contribute. It’s surely a responsibility of communities to demand opportunities for debate, then to stand up and get involved when they happen. Focusing on the outcome beyond the process is key.

According to AAP, the “augmented reality” game, which layers gameplay onto the physical world, became the top grossing app in the iPhone app store just days after it was released in Australia, New Zealand and the US last week. To play, you trek to local landmarks centre – represented as Pokestops – to gather supplies, and it has created a huge following with players seen everywhere from parks to shopping centres. Darwin police have even asked players not to waltz into their station, which is a Pokestop in the game. The app is free and available on iOS and Android.

Astronomers have discovered a planet unlike any other ever found, one that loops widely around one star that is locked in a gravitational embrace with two others in a triple-star system, creating a curious celestial ballet. The findings, published last Thursday in the journal Science, challenge current notions about what makes a planetary system viable. With three stars in the system, the massive planet would experience triple sunrises and triple sunsets during one season and all daylight in another. Since the planet’s orbit is very long, each season lasts hundreds of years. “Depending on which season you were born in, you may never know what nighttime is like,” Kevin Wagner of the University of Arizona says. The planet, called HD 131399Ab, is about four times bigger than Jupiter, the largest planet in our solar system, and is orbiting in a three-star system about 340 light years from Earth in the Centaurus constellation. CHINESE WHISPERS Beijing is a fascinating gateway to a world of Chinese art and culture. By Diana Plater

ts 8.30am and freezing cold but astonishingly beautiful as we arrive at Mutianyu, at the Great Wall. We have the choice of hiking up to the Wall or taking a rather dodgy-looking chairlift, but the latter gets our vote. We are the first on and there is almost

nobody else here, except for the sweepers and stall owners. It’s eerily quiet as we look up at the 23 watch towers on this segment of the Wall, some of which we later reach after climbing the imposing steps. I decide winter is a great time to visit a site that has always been on my bucket

list, with snow on the distant mountains. My hotel, the Sofitel Wanda Beijing, has organised the day tour for me and my fellow tourists are an interesting bunch of businessmen from all over the world. On the way back we visit a jade factory and a silk showroom, the compulsory stops that always seem to

get slipped into tour itineraries. But I enjoy both, in particular talking to the saleswomen about their lives. The next day, back in Beijing, I am lucky enough to get into the last group of the morning to visit the Mausoleum of Mao Zedong and see his embalmed body. Later I visit the converted stateowned factories of the 798 Art District to the northeast of the city in the Dashanzi area. Teeming with art lovers, the complex is named after Factory 798 which originally produced electronics. But from 2002 artists and cultural organisations began to divide, rent out, and remake the factory spaces, gradually developing them into artists’ studios, design companies, restaurants, bars and galleries. While not as edgy as the early days, its still a very cool place to wander around and drop in on openings. The art coming out of China today is said to be some of the most interesting and compelling of our time, made known to many in Australia via the White Rabbit Contemporary Chinese Art Collection in Sydney. years must be given to Brian Wallace, originally from Taree, NSW. In the late 1980s there was no traditional market for the art, so artists would exhibit in their own homes or the hotel rooms of foreigners. Wallace would mix with them and help them organise showings. Some were teachers from the art academies where they had been strictly trained in drawing, sketching and other techniques. Wallace opened Red Gate, the first private contemporary art gallery in China in 1991 in the historic Southeast

Corner Tower at Dongbianmen, one of the few Ming dynasty towers to survive the destruction of the city wall. He explains that for nearly 30 years now he’s witnessed young people really observing and explaining what’s going on in contemporary China in this space that is changing so fast. How do you make sense of it? How do you be critical? How do you analyse it? They’re doing all those things. Another Australian, Luise Guest, an art educator, writer and artist, who has been travelling regularly to China since

2011, was the recipient of a Red Gate writers residency in 2013. Although Beijing has terrible pollution and apocalyptic traffic, that combination of grey walls and roof tiles, and the red gates and willow trees, it has grabbed her heart, Guest says. She is the director of education and research for Judith Neilson’s White Rabbit Collection, and believes contemporary art in China is unlike anything in the rest of the world. After meeting many female artists, she felt their stories were not being told. She has righted that with her new book, Half the Sky, which contains interviews with 32 women artists. On my last day, I take a slow walk through the Forbidden City, peering through windows into its closed rooms, and then go on to some of the hutongs, the narrow alleyways where people still live and which give a taste of old Beijing. Dusty bicycles lean against grey walls and red doors open into captivating courtyards I would love to enter. egardless of your political persuasion, the recent Federal Government election has provided even more financial uncertainty. For those of you who follow politics and investment markets, you will know all too well that markets do not respond well to uncertainty. Without going into too much detail, the Senate will be heavily influenced by independents and minor parties. This throws up a number of challenges for those of you who are saving for retirement or are currently retired. The 2016 budget proposed a number of changes to the superannuation system. The main proposals included changes to the non-concessional contribution limit,

the (controversial) retrospective application of the non-concessional contribution limit, the concessional contribution limit, the $1.6 million cap on pension accounts, and the taxation of transition to retirement pensions. By way of background, these changes were proposed in the budget, but have not yet been passed into legislation. Since the budget, professionals within the superannuation industry have been in a state of flux. Many advisers and accountants have treated the proposed changes to the superannuation system as implemented, as the penalties can be somewhat onerous and complicated to administer. As you can appreciate, the independents and minor parties will have significant influence and the proposed changes to superannuation will most likely be revisited by the incoming government. The government will be required to negotiate its legislation through the

“I am sure you will agree with me when I say this situation is a complete mess” parliament. This includes the federal budget, which will need to be negotiated through the lower and upper house of parliament. For the time being, any strategy which involves superannuation savings

will need to be carefully considered prior to implementation. Currently, the old rules apply, however, in many cases where you apply these old rules, you may be penalised if the proposed changes do eventually get through. I am sure you will agree with me when I say this situation is a complete mess. WARMING BEEF CURRY What better time is there than winter to enjoy a tummy warming curry? Demi from Patterson’s Cooking School shares her recipe for a beef curry. Ingredients: 1kg rump steak, cubed 1 tsp ground cumin 1 tsp black pepper 1 tsp turmeric 1 tbs vinegar 1 tsp fresh ginger, grated 2 tsp ground coriander 1 tsp dried, red hot chilli peppers, crushed 40g butter 2 tsp salt 3 tbs oil 3 medium onions, chopped 2 tsp tomato paste 3 garlic cloves, minced 1 ½ tbs lemon juice 2 tbs desiccated coconut Method: In a bowl, mix together the coriander, cumin, pepper, turmeric, chilli peppers, ginger and vinegar until it’s the consistency of a paste. In a large saucepan, melt the butter. Add the chopped onions and minced garlic and saute for five minutes. Add the spice paste and the tomato paste to the saucepan and cook for another five minutes. Add the cubed steak and stir. Cover and let simmer until the meat is tender.

SURF REPORT

So in my defence Magic Seaweed led me astray… that does not sound right does it? I mean Magic Seaweed the surfing website. It reported 20ft waves to hit J Bay when in actual fact 6–8ft waves appeared. Anyhoo, it is still on and Julian and Mick are still in the mix. I think Julian certainly is showing commitment given his war wounds. Waves are on this weekend but is also throwing in the devil wind for good measure. Maybe they will get it wrong – as if that ever happens! Happy Birthday to Al Hing. His shout for the next month he told me. And free puppies for all kids!

ESTUARY: Bream around a kilo are prolific on the rising tide from the mouth of Eudlo Creek to Chambers Islands. Fowl gut and mullet fillet are the preferred baits. Whiting are taking yabbies in front of the Picnic Point boat ramp. Flathead around Bli Bli bridge are using plastics. SURF: The hot spot for trevally and tailor is Pincushion, either casting slugs or floating pillies with dawn and dusk the best. Dart and quality sea bream can be found from Twin Waters beach track to the bar. OFFSHORE: Parrot, grassy sweetlip and moses perch are taking cut baits around the Gneerings with the better quality at dawn and dusk. Murphy’s Reef is firing along the north-eastern ledge with snapper, amberjack and sweetlip taking pillies and squid. GAMEFISHING: There are bait schools galore in front of Point Cartwright with mac tuna and long-tails feasting hard. A few Spaniards are showing up at dawn on the north drop-off of the Inner Gneerings. FRESHWATER: Lake Baroon is returning bass and spangled perch with lures worked along the weed line, or shrimps jigged near the drop offs. Lake Macdonald is also working well for bass and Mary River cod when medium divers are trolled from the boat ramp to the point opposite the scout den. Somerset as always, is firing for bass and golden perch with good reports from Red Rod and right up near the power lines.

TALES FROM A FAMILY ROAD TRIP Richard O’Leary made some surprising discoveries on a recent driving tour of Queensland.

’ve lived in Queensland for nearly seven years now, which means a couple of things. I’m one of the one percent of people who don’t follow the Broncos or Cowboys, and I don’t know this state as well as many of you. I have no intention of doing anything about the former, despite Parramatta’s year from hell. But to address the latter, I recently embarked on a driving tour of Queensland – well as much of it as I could within the limitations – a two-and-a-half week timeframe and two kids in the back seat. Along the way I discovered a few things about the Sunshine State and life in general. 1. Isis Bus Lines near Childers has a unique reason to hate the global terrorism threat – sharing a name with the Islamic State can’t be good for business. 2. A ball on elastic has become big business – at the Airlie Beach markets at

least. Competition was so fierce between the two stallholders that I overheard one of the vendors tell a friend he was going to destroy the other operator. 3. Kids can be hard to please. Driving past the big mango in Bowen we tried to get our seven-year old a little excited – “Look at that big mango! Have you ever seen a mango that big?” My eldest looked it up and down before saying just one word: “fake”. 4. Showers in camp sites are designed for pygmies or other height challenged individuals – nothing like water blasting into your chest first thing in the morning. 5. The best graffiti we found was on the wall of a toilet at the REEF HQ aquarium in Townsville: “I don’t like fish”. 6. Comment of the trip: “Pause, pause” – my eldest, after the camper trailer came loose from the tow bar. Which would have been a fair call if that was what he was talking about. He was actually referring to

the audio book, which he couldn’t hear because his parents were freaking out as the trailer bounced around, held only by the safety chain. 7. Sightseeing at its worst – the thick plumes of dark smoke pouring out of chimneys at the sugar mill at Proserpine. My five-year old asked: “Why do people litter our skies?” 8. Queensland is such a big state. In our 18 days we experienced freezing conditions where you could see your breath in the morning, and just days later were sweating by 9am. 9. Old microwaves used as mail boxes have become a thing in rural Queensland. 10. And finally, even great trips can’t be full of highlights – during those 2000-plus kilometres I found out my youngest son barracks for… the Broncos. roleary@myweeklypreview.com.au.
