FINDING HER BEST SELF
Loren Wimhurst of Alexandra Headland is an artist, former fashion designer and the founder of one of the Sunshine Coast’s most successful property groups. FIRST JOB? Growing up in Bundaberg surrounded by cane farms and small crops, my sisters and I spent most weekends helping out the local growers by picking all types of produce. At 12, I got a job at a newsagency. I got to wear shoes and dress up. It was definitely a step up. I was really good at sewing and fashion, and became a wiz at making swimwear. When I reached high school I was doing deals with teachers and older students, selling my designs to them, with big dreams of becoming a fashion designer.
CAN YOU NOMINATE A DAY IN YOUR LIFE THAT WAS A TURNING POINT? The day my sister died. Everything changed. I was only 26 and for a few years I really struggled, but it made me stronger and made me appreciate the small things. There is not a day goes by that I don’t think of her.
YOUR GREATEST REGRET? Not telling the people I love how much I love them and how important they are.
WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON?
BEST ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN?
Everything! I really can’t help myself. At the moment, working hard with a great team of people to grow Next Property Group across the Coast and beyond. In my private life, I am very focused on my painting.
My mum’s: ‘Be the best you can be, as you only get one life’.
WHAT ACHIEVEMENT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF?

My children, they have grown into beautiful human beings.
My husband David, children Sam and Estelle, my sisters Karen and Justine, nephews Aaron and Eamon, niece Carys, Dad who is affectionately known as ‘Grumpy’ and extended family. Oh, and our cattle dogs, Max and Rosie.
WHAT FRUSTRATES YOU THE MOST? There are just not enough hours in the day, so much to do, so little time. Can someone fix this please?
FIRST CAR? A bright red, brand new Suzuki hatch. I saved so hard for that car and even got it before I got my licence. When I was old enough to get my licence, I drove it to the local police station and the old sergeant hopped in with me, asked me to do a lap of the block and when we got back asked me if I could drive. Of course I said yes, and then he gave me my licence. The good old days. I would still like to learn how to reverse park one day.

TEA OR COFFEE? Tea first thing in the morning, then a coffee mid-morning to get me through the day. Both white and trying so hard to not have them with sugar. Does taste better with it.

WHY DO YOU LIVE HERE?
NRL, though I never liked it growing up. Being from a family of four girls and only one TV, Dad would always watch the footy and take us along to the local games, which was very boring. Once we were all teenagers, it had a different appeal – all those fit men in very short shorts. I enjoy it now, and really get into the State of Origin. As long as one of my teams is winning, Cowboys, Broncos or the Storm, I am happy.
WHAT ARE YOU READING NOW? Due to my painting obsession and a recent trip to the Murwillimbah gallery to see the amazing Margaret Olley exhibition, I am enjoying Margaret Olley, by Barry Pearce.

I moved to Brisbane at 21 as that’s where I had to be to get ahead in the fashion industry. I was just never a city person, and always craved for quiet and natural beauty, and to hear the ocean.

Sunshine Coast Art Prize finalist Rex Backhaus-Smith gives My Weekly Preview an intimate look at his life and work. WORDS: Richard O’Leary

A
seven-year-old boy looks for a small mound on the dusty landscape and inspects it for pellets of fresh rabbit dung. He digs a small hole, just big enough to conceal the steel trap, opens the jagged jaws, and carefully places a sheet of paper over it. He layers the camouflage: sprinkles dust, leaves and small twigs, taking care not to set it off, before moving on to the next burrow and the next trap. The young boy returns to the same spot in the morning to find a rabbit caught by its forepaws. The animal struggles to release itself before the boy picks it up and ends its suffering with a blow to the head. The lad puts the body in a bag and moves to the next trap. By the end of the morning the bag will be full with a dozen or more rabbits. It’s 1942 at Ingaby, a property near Charleville on the Balonne River in Queensland’s south-west, and the boy will go on to become one of Australia’s most respected painters, Rex BackhausSmith. It may be appropriate that one of his first jobs was to help hunt a pest which was causing so much damage to the land he has been linked with personally and professionally ever since. But he concedes it was more about making money in tough times. “I used to wander with my younger brother all over the place. We had no

limits, no restrictions. Sometimes we would camp out for a week. It was so cold too. We slept at night in wool packs because they were warm and would keep you out of the wind. And we’d have a big fire. Our parents trusted us with a fire,” Backhaus-Smith says as he takes me back to his childhood. He’s 80 years old now as we sit on the back patio of his new home in Twin Waters. It’s a modern construction which has more than a passing resemblance to an art gallery; all square lines, light and big spaces. That feeling is reinforced by the dozens of paintings that already adorn its many walls. But the place has a warmth, which defies its architecture, and it probably comes down to the painter himself and his partner of 24 years, Judith Laws, who sits by his side during the interview. He tells me his roots are in the land. They run deep into the red soil around Charleville and beyond. His father, who was “very tough” and “old school” taught him how to survive in the bush and the young Rex spent days, months, and years exploring it; watching, listening and capturing its essence with pen and paper like the artist he was to become. “I’ve had the obsession [with art] all my life. It came very early in the piece. My mother was a little inclined towards the arts, I can blame her I suppose. My father
was dead against it. He wanted me to go on the land. I guess I loved him. He was a bush man, and he wouldn’t hesitate if the kids did something wrong to flog them, with whatever was at hand – a whip. I can remember when he was a dingo shooter and ring barker – both destructive, both things I’m vehemently against.” So the young rabbit hunter soon grew to know what it was like to be trapped. He loved the land, but realised its limitations for what he wanted to do with his life. He left the farm as a teenager and worked as a salesman for Southern Cross, a company that made water tanks and windmills. He soon won a teaching scholarship to Brisbane, but when he graduated the bush pulled him back and he became a primary school teacher in Charleville. All the while he continued to paint; going bush with local stock and station agent Fred Robertson, the pair combining their works to put on an exhibition in the town in 1961. Backhaus-Smith relocated to Brisbane shortly after to teach in a high school and earn his Certificate in Applied Art. His reputation as a painter and art teacher continued to grow throughout the ‘60s and early ‘70s, when his life reached a turning point which would reshape his career as a painter. In 1972 he was granted leave from the Department of
Education for a study tour of the world’s great galleries. He spent time in the US, Holland, France and Spain, but he based himself in England. In one of life’s quirks, the man who is now recognised as one of the best painters of distinctively Australian landscapes says the greatest influence on his unique style is an English Romanticist watercolourist who never set foot in this country – Joseph Mallord William (J. M. W.) Turner, who on his death bed is said to have uttered the last words “The sun is God”. “I based myself in London. Terribly lonely, but I found a friend in Turner. I used to go and study Turner almost every day, for months.” Backhaus-Smith returned to Australia a new painter and a new man. At 37, married with a five-year-old daughter and a seven-year-old son, he took a great leap of faith, throwing in his job and moving to the Darling Downs to become a full-time painter, despite the protests of his then wife Heather to “get a real job”. His metamorphosis was complete and the art world couldn’t get enough of his atmospheric paintings, full of light and mixed with a lyrical surrealism. “I was popular in those days. Slinger describes the Backhaus-Smith style: “He masterfully manipulates his medium to create intricately woven layers that offer up much more to the viewer than just a simple and fleeting visual image.” Art critic Kate Collins says, “The reverberations, distinctly lyrical and musical . . . reveals an artist who not only looks at, but listens to the land.” Each painting is a performance of patience, with rigorous research going into each one before a paintbrush gets anywhere near a blank canvas. “The painting is the last part of the story. Because what goes on before is a wonderful thought process. I just love it. I always have a million ideas and thoughts and I just can’t wait to get it down. When I’m actually painting the actual process could be a week, as quick as that. Although when I’m researching subjects it could be months. It can take years.” That can often mean returning to the outback to immerse himself in the landscapes of his childhood, as his partner Laws explains. “We’ll be home for a few weeks and Rex will say, ‘I’ve got to go outback. I’ve got to go bush.’” Rex chimes in, “It’s getting a bit that way at the moment.” You suspect he shares the same root system as those gum trees of his youth – nourished by the same water table, weather beaten by the same sun and given his sense of place by the same landscape. His eucalyptus umbilical cord stretching to allow him to travel, learn, grow, but always only to a point where it starts to pull him back, so he can source sustenance, succour and salvation. His paintings have been hung in some of the best galleries around Australia and overseas, including the National Library in Canberra and the Queensland House Gallery in London, and one thing has remained constant. “I want to tell a story. I want to tell a story through paint,” he says. His latest story is about one of the most maligned creatures in the Australian
Entangled by Rex Backhaus-Smith bush, the dingo. In the Wake of the Warrigal is Backhaus-Smith’s entry in this year’s Sunshine Coast Art Prize. It’s a return to a theme, the son of a dingo hunter who sides with the dingo. You can see the silhouette of his father in the painting. It’s difficult to know what he would have thought about appearing in one of his son’s works. “I must say he was proud of me in the end,” Backhaus-Smith says. “He went to [only] one of my exhibitions and spent hours looking at the paintings.” It’s the 10th anniversary of the Sunshine Coast Art Prize, which is growing in prestige and prize money every year. A Backhaus-Smith work has never won. “The Sunshine Coast Art Prize is terribly important. It can’t be overestimated the effect it has upon artists and the community as a whole, being able to view the best, not only from the Sunshine Coast, but from all over Australia.” “And just to be chosen in the first 40 is an honour. To win it would be outstanding. I’m not even thinking of that . . . I lie [laughter]. Occasionally I think, oh geez, it would be good.”
It would be a well earnt accolade for the painter, who moved to the Sunshine Coast with Judith Laws in the early ‘90s a few years after his divorce – but you don’t get the sense it would be the end of the world if it doesn’t happen. Near death experiences can give you that sort of perspective. In 2012 Backhaus-Smith fell off the roof of his Montville home, suffering severe back and head injuries. He died three times in the rescue helicopter on the way to Brisbane. Months in hospital were followed by a slow and trying recovery. But he’s emerged with a new appreciation for life. “For Judith and I, we live every day as if it’s extra special. We can’t afford to be negative. Time sort of meant nothing to us before the accident, and we were a bit blasé about life.” Laws nods in agreement. A respected artist in her own right, the pair has formed an incredibly close bond. “We love each other as much as we did 24 years ago, it’s just incredible,” Backhaus-Smith says. “Judith thinks I’m the best painter and I think she’s the best painter.” All those years ago, his first drawing in
the bush was with a lead pencil, and the subject was a swamp on the property his family worked. When I ask him after all that time whether any paintings stick out more than others, he returns to another picture of a swamp. “It’s one around the corner (he points to the hallway in his house). It’s one of the best watercolours I ever did. It’s called Entangled.” We get up and walk over to it and he talks me through it. “It’s a complicated water colour, because it’s layered. No less than 24 layers of washes. Barramundi, crocodile. Person. A lady. Man (he points to each one). Reflecting all those things in the story. A dingo. Bubbles – I’ve used to supplement the storytelling. It’s a swamp in the Kakadu.” Each word and each gesture reveals another twist, another turn in the tale. An additional layer on the many layers already apparent to the eye. He shows how everything is linked. Just like rabbit and trap, father and son, art and the world it’s trying to explain, a seven-year-old boy and the 80-year-old man he has become.
SEE THE FINALISTS The Sunshine Coast Art Prize started 10 years ago, and has since expanded to include a variety of mediums, both traditional and contemporary. Backhaus-Smith is competing in the 2D (two-dimensional) category which is the foundation stone of the prize. COAST FASHION LABELS ON SHOW
I
f there is one thing Jacinta Richmond knows, it is fashion. The Sunshine Coast mover and shaker is well aware that there is more to fashion than a good pair of boots and this season’s style. This is why she founded the Sunshine Coast Fashion Festival eight years ago. Richmond knew creating an industry respected event in regional Australia was never going to be easy, but she gave it a go anyway. The event has now grown from a poolside show to a major event showcasing local, national and international designers. “Some designers have it, some have it but need some mentoring and guidance,’’ Richmond says. “We look for those emerging brands and give them opportunities they would not otherwise have. “We put them in the spotlight and educate. We put them alongside established or international labels and let them network and learn.’’ The Coast is quickly cementing itself as a fashion forward region thanks
to its innovative design industry, Richmond says. “I felt the Sunshine Coast had a very creative industry, and I knew that if we could put together a professionally produced fashion show, we could really create a catalyst for growth and development, for the labels and for the region as a fashion holiday destination.” “The idea was the easy part, the vision for the future is the easy part. “Being flexible in how the vision will come about is key, as is dedication and perseverance. “As the event has grown so has my team and without their passion and dedication, we would not be propelling forward to achieve some big goals over the next two years.’’ This year’s festival will be held at Caloundra’s The Events Centre on October 17. The team is now on the lookout for models to walk the catwalk. A casting call is being held at Caloundra’s Rumba Resort on August 16 for people aged between six and 75. Between 45 and 50 models will be
selected to walk for labels ranging from swimwear to couture, women’s, men’s and children’s clothing. Richmond says aspiring models don’t need to be working with an agency to apply. “I recently read an article by a Brisbane label complaining that all of the models are in Sydney and that they have to fly them to Queensland for their photoshoots,’’ she says. “For eight years, the Sunshine Coast Fashion Festival has been privileged to work with Queensland models and let me tell you, that while there are great models in Sydney, the industry shouldn’t overlook the fantastic talent in our own sunny backyard. “The Sunshine Coast Fashion Festival has accepted all body shapes and sizes since its inception. “We have always been about reflecting the true population on the catwalk. “We look for a healthy body, skinny or plus size.’’ Model registration forms and ticket sales for the October event are available through sunshinecoastfashionfestival.com.

HIGH ON LIFE AT 78 Mooloolaba’s Maggie Counihan is loving life in Cambodia, where she’s teaching the locals to play ukulele. WORDS & IMAGES: Sam Walker
M
aggie Counihan of Mooloolaba is a pint-sized granny with a giant-sized personality. She squeezes every inch out of life and embraces the world around her with enthusiasm and energy. Counihan, 78, is living in Siem Reap, Cambodia for a year and loving every minute of the adventure, which she is sharing with her partner of 10 years, Rollo Dixon. The couple are members of the Sunshine Coast Ukulele Masters and are sharing their love of music with the locals. They head out on their scooter in all weather to sing and play the ukulele in poor schools. They are having a ball and the children look forward to their visits. Some are even learning to play the ukulele. Counihan’s early years were tough, although she doesn’t dwell on them. Her mother died when she was young and she didn’t have a female role model. A pregnancy at 18 forced her to grow up fast and she became a teen mother, resulting in a shotgun wedding. By the time the mother of four turned 50, she had been married twice, divorced and widowed. And then it seems life truly began for this vibrant woman. “I didn’t have my teens until I hit 50,” she says. “I had a marvellous time. I had dates and I was dancing.” It’s clear Counihan loves life and she embraces any opportunity that comes her way. “I ran away from home at 60,” she says of her decision to backpack solo. She couldn’t find anyone to go with her, so she set off alone to travel through India.
“I got my degree in life travelling,” she says, recalling her travels on the hippie trail to all corners of the globe. She lived in Thailand and worked at a summer camp in China and as a masseuse in Cambodia. She ventured overland to Tibet, fought off a burglar in her accommodation in Thailand, was robbed in Mexico, travelled on the Trans-Mongolian railway from Beijing to St Petersburg and shared a sleeper carriage with a group of Russian men in their undies.

After nearly a decade of travel people were asking her when she was going to settle down, so she decided to head home and catch up with a good friend in Buderim. She had no idea it was going to result in a love affair. Counihan had briefly met Dixon on a previous visit to the Coast, but it was some months before they got together – and he had been waiting for her. “I fell in love,” she laughs. “I was 68 going on 69 and I was feeling like a teenager.” She penned and self-published her first book, Backpacking to Freedom Solo at 60, in 2010 and Dixon became her promotions manager, accompanying her as she travelled around the country to give talks. The couple also travelled extensively overseas. She took Dixon to her first stomping ground, India and to Cambodia (a country she fell in love with many years ago and returns to every year). They then became qualified English teachers together and moved to Vietnam to work. A second book, Bring on the Birthdays, Ageing with Adventure, came out a few years later and she again toured to promote it, Dixon supporting her along the way. Her advice to other seniors who’d love to travel: “Just do it. Break out of your safety zone and life will never be the same again.” Life is more exciting than ever for this Sunshine Coast local who says she’s keen to “bring on the birthdays”. “You can be old and miserable at 30,” she says. “That’s what I’m on about now – ageing with joy. “If you keep having adventures, you won’t get old.”

There are a whole bunch of dads who are doing their damn best every day to get their kids off to school or work. It is a bigger club than many Coasties realise, thanks to divorce and women working more hours. This week my radio work buddy, Toddy, became the President of the Struggling Dads Club. He was all in a flap trying to prep, primp and perfect his four children when he was stopped dead in his tracks by the request of his six-yearold daughter. The little girl wanted a bun. It would have been easier to deliver a troop of dancing elephants wearing tiaras. But a bun! I had phoned Todd to remind him we had a management meeting that morning. His reply was swift and there was definite panic in his voice: “Look, I have bigger things going on at the moment compared to work meetings. I am trying to do my first bun.” Admittedly not as super difficult as a reverse fish braid (look that one up fellows), but a step up from the regular hair clip. I bet most guys would not know the first thing about how the hell hair actually stays in a bun. But to his credit, Toddy manned up. A bucket of sweat, 89 bobby pins, and two cans of hairspray later, he was successful. His

daughter had a perfect looking bun to rival a world class ballerina. I know it is sexist to assume men cannot cope with some parenting requests. I also know saying they are struggling dads is a stereotype of the bumbling dad we see in The Simpsons. And trust me, I also know there are more women than men doing the solo circus wire act to get their kids out of the house every morning. But let’s just indulge me this once, because it is such a sweet and simple story of a bun and a dad. But now Toddy is so drunk on the power of his hairstyle success that he is planning on starting up a business called ‘Buns On The Run’ – where he will stand at the school pick up/drop off zone and charge little girls to whip their hair into lustrous top knots. My husband could welcome a customer. He’s a super dad but had one epic fail recently when our four-year-old daughter wanted a ponytail for daycare. He gulped, then Googled, and then zip locked her golden locks in place. Oh dear.

COOL IT Nutritionist Cyndi O’Meara has some advice for reducing inflammation.
I
nflammation is part of our body’s natural healing response. However, inflammation becomes destructive when it extends beyond localised areas and remains for prolonged periods. Chronic inflammation is becoming more common due to our SAD (Standard Australian Diet) and our sedentary lifestyles, and is contributing to obesity, heart disease rheumatoid arthritis and some cancers. To reduce inflammation we need to find what agrees with our own bodies. Remove all inflammatory foods, and then reintroduce them slowly to find what causes an immune response. Foods that promote an inflammatory response include refined sugars or carbohydrates, excessive consumption of food containing omega-6 (vegetable oils and trans fats) as well as foods you do not find in nature, such as GM foods and artificial additives.
Foods that fight inflammation: • Fatty fish such as salmon, tuna, sardines and mackerel. These are the most beneficial form of omega-3, the king of anti-inflammation. Vegetarians can increase their consumption of plantbased omega-3 such as chia seeds, walnuts or inca inchi oil. • Vegetables such as broccoli, brussels sprouts, kale, cabbage and bok choy, as they have incredibly high amounts of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. • Turmeric, which is an Asian spice that contains a powerful anti-inflammatory compound called curcumin. • Fermented foods such as sauerkraut, traditional yoghurt and kefir, as they contain a bounty of probiotics which help to reduce inflammation in the body.

Roger Crow discovers there’s more to Miami than meets the eye.
“B
oom! Boom! Boom! “Hold on!” yells Captain Matt, the engine of his boat roaring like an unleashed animal. My heart’s racing as we bounce from wave to wave, the familiar Florida skyline a backdrop to my sun-kissed adventure. I knew I should have worn a suit jacket, sleeves rolled up like some 1980s TV detective. It’s too hot for that, but crashing through the surf near Gloria Estefan’s
house on the aptly named celeb-filled Star Island, it’s hard for any former ‘80s teen not to imagine themselves as a Miami Vice crime-buster. While Jan Hammer’s title theme plays on my mental jukebox, Ocean Force Adventures’ skipper guides our RIB over the next wave. I soon discover the truth behind Miami Beach, instead of the Hollywood fantasy fed to me. This year marks the centenary of Miami Beach and with a number of special events taking place,
it’s the ideal time to plan a visit. I find no shortage of glorious attractions, including the 2000 stars of Everglades Alligator Farm, and the more amiable aquatic life at Miami Seaquarium. I head downtown to PAMM (Perez Art Museum Miami) to absorb some of the paintings and sculptures; a veggie burger at resident waterfront eatery Verde is an added bonus. My mental battery charges like a phone plugged into the mains. As glorious as PAMM is, I soon lose my heart to another attraction: the jawdropping Wynwood Walls and arts district This neighbourhood, filled with murals, galleries, hipster breweries and cool bars, is hugely rewarding. Leaving the edgy urban art gallery, we go next door to a micro brewery and geek chic bar, J Wakefield Brewery, decorated with Marvel and Star Wars ephemera. My inner 10-year-old has never been so happy. Miami is my favourite new cocktail of a holiday, blending the best of Florida’s laidback charm with a fiery Cuban spirit. Given the wealth of options on offer, it’s hard not to enthuse about this jewel in America’s crown. * Roger Crow was a guest of Thomas Cook Airlines. AAP

ith the Australian stock market struggling to gain any clear direction, investors have been left a little frustrated. The US market has managed to secure record highs while our market continues its sideways trajectory, going nowhere fast. However, one ray of sunshine has been the strong performance of the healthcare sector. Though Australia doesn’t possess too many companies compared with other international markets in the healthcare space, we do have a few that have done us proud. Examples include CSL (this company’s stock cracked $100 per share last week), Ramsay Health, Sirtex
Medical and Blackmores Limited. The healthcare sector has, in fact, outperformed every other sector of the ASX200 during 2015. It’s been the best sector over a one-year (38 per cent), three-year (30 per cent annualised) and 10-year (16 per cent) period. Investors have tended to focus on big dividend stocks and missed the capital growth offered by these healthcare stocks. Another of the healthcare stocks which we have just upgraded is the outstanding hearing device company Cochlear Limited. Cochlear manufactures and distributes cochlear implantable devices for the hearing impaired, with direct operations in more than 20 countries. Cochlear offers two main products. The first is the Cochlear Nucleus, which is an implant system for children and adults with moderate to profound hearing loss in both ears. Then there is the Cochlear Baha, a bone-conduction implant for children and adults with
single-sided deafness and certain types of conductive or mixed hearing loss. Ord Minnett has raised our recommendation on Cochlear to buy and our target price to $90.62 after reviewing the findings of the second Ear to the Ground survey. The survey, which is focused largely on US audiologists, suggested overall market growth for cochlear implants of about 10 per cent and that Cochlear appeared to be regaining lost ground in market share. Cochlear’s 2015 financial year result should be robust, echoing the performance of the first half and underpinning attractive growth for several years. reckon one of the best sledges I’ve heard in the last week re our soft Ashes performance comes from the mouth of a bloke I call Geezer, so nicknamed not because he’s an old dude, far from it, but because he’s a downright dirty, stinking, disrespecting Englishman and he happens to be one of my best mates in the world. He rang and left a message not long after Straya pooped the bed. Naturally I wasn’t taking calls and he left the following message: “Hey Toddy boy, it’s Geezer, I rang to say I sat down earlier to watch the fourth Test and panicked ‘coz I only had two beers in the fridge. An Aussie batsmen wearing sunscreen!” “Hey up, what do you call an Aussie cricketer with 100 next to his name? A bowler.” Ouch. “What’s the easiest job in the Australian cricket squad? The lad who removes the red ball marks from the bats.” Now that’s pure comedy gold. In the same way one might describe Schindler’s List as pure comedy gold, or socks with Crocs socially acceptable. Bugger it. It’s been a crazy week, we lose the
THE CLAPTOMANIACS cricket but we win the Bledisloe, the whole world’s gone topsy turvy. The only thing left for us to do is sit back with a couple of quieties and try to relax our freckle. This beer is the latest drop from the 4 Pines range and it’s tops. ESB stands for Extra Special Bitter and is an awardwinning, full flavoured, amber coloured, rich English ale. It oozes a strong toffee and raisin sweetness with a good dose of firm bitterness and a cracking fresh, hoppy aroma. This is the perfect accompaniment to a cold night around the fire where nothing could be better than a lazy half dozen ESB’s and a good chin wag. Just don’t mention the cricket. I give 4 Pines ESB a solid 3.5 out of 5 thumbs up.

Who is the most interesting person you’ve had in store? Bette Midler. She’s such a powerful and energetic entertainer and surprisingly in real life, she is very tiny in stature, gentle and very natural, with a genuine love for antique jewellery. Funniest experience at work? One day a married couple came into the shop, both secretly wanting to buy an anniversary present for each other. They called me later to say how delighted they were with their gifts and surprised at how I achieved the seemingly impossible. Where do you find inspiration? Travelling the world – I look into every antique shop I find. What can’t you live without? I can’t live without French champagne – and potato chips. Naughty but nice. What do you do outside work hours? My favourite pastime is walking the beach and coffee at Mooloolaba with old friends. Best thing about being on the Coast? I lived on the coast 20 years ago. Since moving back I’ve reconnected with dear friends. It feels like coming back home.

s someone to whom you have made a gift under your will, a bankrupt or at risk of becoming a bankrupt? If so, you should be aware of the impact this may have on your testamentary intentions and what you can do about it. When someone is declared a bankrupt, all of their assets at that time and any assets they may acquire whilst they remain a bankrupt become the property of their trustee in bankruptcy. That period usually lasts for three years from when the court order is made. If you were to die shortly before a beneficiary under your will becomes a bankrupt or during the three years they remain a bankrupt, then the whole of the gift could vest in the trustee and be distributed amongst the creditors of the bankrupt. If there is a substantial risk of this happening, then you should immediately seek legal advice and change your will to remove any gift directly to the relevant person.

You can still benefit the family of that person in your will. One way of doing so is to create a trust under your will for the benefit of that family in such a way that there is no risk that any part of your estate will be gifted to the person whilst they remain a bankrupt. Low Thyroid? Get the Right Diagnosis How to Boost Energy, Mood, Speed Metabolism & Lose Weight Sluggish energy, unmotivated, weight gain, fluid retention, low mood, hair loss and low hormones are all symptoms that can occur with sensitivity to the cold. If you’ve suspected your thyroid, and had it checked, only to come back normal, you may have been on the right track, but with the wrong test.
One simple test your Doctor may not be doing can find the real reason why brain fog, sluggish energy, weight gain, hormone problems and low motivation affect you. Having a low body temperature will have you rugged up, making excuses to stay in bed. A number of health risks can lower your body temperature, making it, for some, excruciatingly painful to expose themselves to the elements, wind, rain and cold water. Your thyroid is a common cause of a low temperature, though the thyroid doesn’t play up on its own, there’s usually another cause. Your TSH is the most typical and only test your doctor may choose to check your thyroid. If you have a real and obvious thyroid condition or disease, this will generally be abnormal, leading to further testing. However, if your TSH is normal, you could still be suffering with Subclinical Hypothyroidism or Wilson’s Syndrome, a mild form of low thyroid function, and can wreak havoc for your body temperature, metabolism, hormone balance, mood and energy levels, and will not be picked up with TSH tests alone. There are a full range of tests that should be done to fully examine your thyroid health, and without these, this very common condition can go undetected for years. Once you have a correct diagnosis, treating it is the next step. Triggers for Wilsons Syndrome can be stress induced, dietary, hormonal imbalance or nutritional deficiency, and each individual can vary greatly. Finding these triggers is as simple as organising follow up blood testing over a range of nutrients and body functions to find the cause, and is often very quickly resolved. Apologies if this is all starting to sound a bit repetitive. I’m sure Mazda’s rivals are sick and tired of hearing about yet another new Mazda that seems destined to be a runaway sales success. I guess the only people not tiring of the scenario are the clever folk from Hiroshima themselves – who seem to have the ultimate Midas touch at the moment. The CX-5 was hardly in need of improvement – or a sales boost – in its now-superseded form. After all, Mazda has already built more than a million CX-5s and surely that many happy customers can’t be wrong. But now it goes to market freshly armed with an upgraded connectivity system called MZD Connect; plus new additions to the iActivesense safety suite. These include a city-braking collision-avoidance system with radar cruise control, lane-keeping assist system, driver fatigue monitoring and active LED headlights. At first glance not all that much has changed aesthetically, but then again not much needed to. We tested a reasonably high-spec version of the CX-5, the petrol-powered, all-wheel-drive GT variant with a price continued over>

won’t pretend that driving cars and writing about them is the world’s most stressful job. But it does have its moments. Like when your boss asks you to recommend the best new car for him to buy. For his wife. That’s pressure. To be fair, my boss also knows a thing or two about cars.
So he had plenty of decent options in mind for his new family runabout before he asked for my input. But the ultimate sigh of relief came when he asked this: “What about a Mazda CX-5?” Thank goodness. Now there’s a car I can recommend without any hint of risk. The Japanese maker’s mid-sized SUV
has swept all before it since being launched in 2012, with more than 60,000 sales in Australia alone at an average of about 1700 every month – making it one of the most popular vehicles on our roads. Mazda has just updated its best-selling SUV and the result is a car that’s even more fit for purpose.

Only the flagship Akera ($47,410 in petrol trim, $3000 more with a turbo-diesel) sits above the GT on the CX-5 price list. Entry-level Maxx models, with a smaller two-litre petrol engine, front-wheel-drive and six-speed manual, start at $27,190 plus onroad costs. So the CX-5 is accessible to a variety of budgets. Significantly, those prices start about $600 lower than the previous model, thanks in part to Australia’s new free-trade agreement with Japan. Thanks, Mr Abbott. Yet for a car that is so dominant in its market segment, it’s not instantly obvious what all the fuss is about. The CX-5 is not outstanding in any particular way. Not hugely powerful, but adequately so. Roomy without being cavernous. Rewarding to drive but not exactly sporty. Nicely equipped and beautifully finished, but a rung short of luxurious. Stylishly designed, but not an absolute head-turner, either. Put it all together, though, and it’s a winning package. The SkyActiv engine is crisp and

punchy, without exactly delivering firecracker performance. But it’s more than adequate for a family conveyance, and is pleasingly frugal. The transmission, too, is unobtrusively efficient – always putting the CX-5 into the right ratio, rarely allowing the engine to labour or over-rev. A choice of Sport mode delivers a more urgent, responsive level of performance. Like its predecessor, the updated CX-5 is a real pleasure to drive with its sure-footed handling, well-resolved ride and quiet ambience in the cabin. Mazda says substantial tweaking of the suspension has delivered a

The diesel version, which attracts a $3000 price premium, leads the efficiency stakes with a thirst of 5.7L/100km. The 2.5L petrol sips a still reasonable 7.4L/100km average. HOW MUCH? Thanks to improved import conditions, the entry-level Maxx model has dropped $600 in price to a tick over $27-grand. We tested the swankier GT AWD version, from $43,390 plus onroads.

The interior layout remains largely untouched, although the seven-inch colour touch screen is a welcome addition. Also welcome is the electronic parking brake – the first to feature on a Mazda. The external makeover, particularly around the front grille, has added to the Mazda’s pert, athletic appearance. Mazda boasts that the new CX-5 is not only more stylish, but safer than ever. A safer bet to recommend to others, as well.

Whether you’re stepping onto the property ladder for the first time, or you’re a seasoned investor looking for your next buy, there are many property buying mistakes you should avoid making. Here are our top eight:
1. NOT GETTING PRE-APPROVAL

Here at MPP we always stress the importance of doing your research (by visiting open homes and checking out the property market) way before you are ready to buy. But before heading to an open home with a view to making on offer, make sure you will have the money to buy the home by talking to your lender first. Your mortgage broker or bank manager will give you an idea of what you can afford and offer pre-approval for a loan.
3. NOT READING THE FINE PRINT Always have a solicitor help with the legal requirements of buying a home. Solicitor’s fees vary, so if you want to save money, it is worth shopping around. But just because you’ve engaged a solicitor doesn’t mean you shouldn’t also carefully read through contracts and ask questions if you are not sure what the clauses mean.
7. NOT THINKING OF RESALE

FAILING TO BUDGET Even after the bank has offered pre-approval for a loan, it’s important you set a personal budget so you can get an idea about how realistic making those loan repayments will be for you. Are you comfortable that you’ll be able to pay it back? Sit down and calculate exactly how much you need for groceries, bills, school fees, the car, credit cards and any other expenses you have. How much cash is left at the end of the month? That will give you an idea if you can really afford that mortgage.
3. NOT TREATING THE SALE LIKE A BUSINESS TRANSACTION Sure, you want to find a home you love, but property buying is a business transaction – the biggest one you’re likely to make. Agents are there to answer questions but you should research the home and
the suburb yourself to get an idea of its value. Compare the property’s asking price with recent sales. If you have fallen in love with the house and the price seems right, don’t make an offer just yet. Ask yourself if it really suits your needs. Can you live with the home’s faults and if not, will a renovation be realistic? Is it close enough to schools if you have children, and coffee shops if you love a latte? What’s the local community like? Using your heart is fine but let your head have a say too.
6. FORGETTING THE BUILDING, PEST AND INSURANCE It’s really important to make sure your sale is subject to the home passing the building and pest inspections. Even if you’re happy to buy the home with some damage
and a few termites, you want to know about it before you move in, not after. And don’t forget to insure the property from the moment the contract is signed, and not just when you move in. If the property is damaged after you’ve signed the contract, it is your loss.
5. NOT CHECKING THE CHATTELS If your children have fallen in love with the beautiful play equipment in the backyard and you can’t wait to get cooking on the huge barbie on the deck, you might be disappointed to find these, and many other items you loved about the home, are missing when you get the keys. Remember, fittings or chattels (which are any items not bolted down, plumbed in or screwed on) are not usually part of the sale, so if you want them, negotiate to have

If you can imagine yourself growing old in the home and so are not considering resale value, you’ve made another mistake. If you know you’ve overpaid but don’t care because it’s the home of your dreams, what happens if you have to sell in a year or two? The property will be worth much less than you paid for it. During inspection always look at a home as other buyers would see it too.
8. WAIVING YOUR COOLING-OFF PERIOD Standard contracts for residential property sales come with a five-day cooling-off period, which you can waive. But why would you? It’s important you understand exactly when this period begins and ends and what the implications are if do waive it, or if you do terminate the contract in this period.

Local real estate agent Ross Cattle opens up to Jemma Pearson about living life in the fast lane.
L
ike most real estate agents, Ross Cattle’s weekends are busy with open homes and managing a successful agency, but these aren’t the only activities that keep his calendar full. The Define Property principal is also a keen motorbike rider and something of a fitness fanatic. And his extra-curricular activities are even more surprising when you take a look at his medical records. Few people would venture out on a motorbike to race, but even with several injuries under his belt – including three broken collarbones, a broken femur, some internal bleeding and, incredibly, a fused spine – Cattle still satisfies his need for speed. He recently competed in the Queensland Road Racing Championships, which were held in June. Racing in the super bike category, Cattle was feeling confident as he made his way around the course. “I hadn’t raced in quite a while and I was just feeling my way back into it,” he tells My Property Preview. “I practised on Friday and qualified poorly.” He says that during the race, “I got my groove back and was poking my way through the field and saw a gap

But I didn’t take into account a bit of water on the track and came in too close . . . my front wheel just slid out in front of me.” Luckily he says he was not travelling “super fast – probably about 80 kilometres an hour”. Thanks to his race suit and the angle of the fall, he didn’t sustain any injuries. “I got up and I was fine. Just a bit cranky because I had been feeling so good.” What makes the incident (which is pictured here) a surprising one wasn’t that Cattle had a spill during the race – it’s the fact that he was racing at all. The story goes back to when Cattle was a much younger man. “I fell off a roof as a carpenter at 18,” he says, adding that at the time he just got up and went on with his day. “I didn’t go to the hospital after that, but I have had back problems ever since.”

Those back problems were exacerbated in April 2013, when Cattle had a crash on a different form of transport. Riding his pushbike around the streets of Pelican Waters, Cattle fell at a roundabout and hurt himself, but this time he couldn’t shake off the injury. “The vertebrae had pushed a disc into the spinal cord and I lost the use of my left leg for a day.” While he eventually got the feeling back, “I could only walk 10 or 15 metres. They tried to avoid having an operation. But my leg started wasting away. “Then we decided to operate.” He says that period of his life, including the two months he was off work, proved challenging. “I just have to be doing stuff. I am a busy person and being laid up was a mental strain as well as physical. “What they did was cut my lower back open and removed the disc between two vertebrae and stuck some bone in, put the vertebrae back in and put rods either side of the vertebra. The bone graft itself is called a spinal fusion.” He says he never thought he would ride a pushbike again, but rather than telling him to stay away from sports, his doctors advised that he would be able to remain as active as he always was. And while the recovery process was long – Cattle says it took a full year to get over the surgery – he now feels stronger than ever in his back. “My left leg is still definitely weaker now. But I think it is wonderful I can get life back. I have no back pain.” He’s been testing the limits of his body ever since. He competed in the Gold Coast marathon in early July and posted a time of four hours and seven minutes. And in April he took on the Port Macquarie triathlon. “That is a 3.8-kilometre swim, and 180-kilometre bike ride and then a marathon.” He crossed the finish line just over 11 hours after he started. Cattle hopes others who have back injuries can take heart in his achievements. “I think some people just give up and think they can’t do this and that. I still can go on a 100-kilometre bike ride no worries at all.” So what’s next for the 43-year-old? Next year he hopes to compete in an Iron Man event. “I am really working on my running now because I have this new stability in my back.” But for the immediate future he wants to set aside some family time with his three children, which will no doubt involve some form of sport.

Ding, ding! The next round of WSL will be starting in Teahupoo. The prediction for swell is ho-hum for the first part which means the Brazilians should do well - bugger. Hopefully some solid waves will push through. Owen Wright on his forehand should be amongst it as will Mr Slater and hopefully Julian. Hands up if you scored last Monday? Man, what a morning of waves…everywhere. This weekend looks fairly average so maybe consider a hit of golf or go fishing as there’s not much on offer. Or go to your local surf shop and buy some stuff you don’t need. Works for me. Now for those of you who are heading to Indo to score perfection. I hope you have a lovely time and get plenty of perfect, uncrowded waves…NOT!

ESTUARY: Quality bream are being taken this week from the Mooloolah boat moorings and Cotton Tree area on pilly pieces. Tailor can be found at dusk in the same area. Channel and Goat Island to Twin Waters are returning bream, whiting and flathead on yabbies and baby blue pillies. SURF: There are plenty of new gutters and holes along north shore Maroochy and down from the Maroochydore Surf Life Saving Club with bream and tailor working well at dawn and dusk using pillies and whitebait. Whiting and small dart are being taken from the same gutters during the day. OFFSHORE: Probably the best time of the year for squire, parrot and mixed reef fish from Caloundra to Coolum with the deeper reefs of Wide Caloundra and the Barwon Banks best for snapper, pearlies and amberjack. FRESHWATER: The action has slowed down at most impoundments with only Somerset, Bjelke Petersen and Boondooma providing a few winter bass, but, if the barometer rises, look out! The upper reaches of Mooloolah and Maroochy are also returning small bass on lures and floated live shrimps. Lake Baroon is the exception with plenty of nice fat bass.

TIME TO CLIMB Climbing Mount Coolum becomes symbolic of life’s journey for Richard O’Leary.
I
was lucky enough to have a morning free to myself recently and headed to Mount Coolum, and I came to the conclusion climbing the big rock is a little like the journey of life. Mount Coolum looks deceptively easy at the beginning, a very gradual climb that encourages you to go a million miles a minute, mind and body eager to get ahead of the other walkers. Not really knowing why you want to be in front, but realising once you have overtaken someone, there is no turning back or slowing down. Then the rocks begin. Creeping like a snail, you are soon huffing and puffing and before you know it, you need to take a break. It’s only then you notice the view: snapshots of bushland and ocean caught between the overhanging branches of the trees. You continue to climb, happy in the knowledge there will be more
wonderful vistas as a reward for your efforts. But you pace yourself now, not so worried about how fast everyone else is going. There are a few false peaks, but you push on. You’ve come this far after all. You take a few more rest stops to take in some deep breaths, and breathtaking views.
“The climb is different for everyone. Some do it easier than others” You reach the top and the world feels like your stage. The reward is there as expected and you soak it up slowly, trying to absorb all the postcard pics of beach and bush on a
still and sunny winter’s morning. But, eventually, you have to go back down. It’s one of the laws of physics and lifetimes. You take your time, saying many more hellos than when you were on your way up. But those walking the other way are too focused on themselves to take too much notice of you. But you take it all in your stride and return to where you left: muscles stretched, lungs expanded, soul sated. The climb is different for everyone. Some do it easier than others. It’s a joy for some, a burden for others. There’s old, young, men, women, individuals, families, friends and mums with kids strapped to their backs. I am happy with my climb. I have a coffee and cake, just as I like it, and think if heaven served hot drinks and desserts, it wouldn’t be half bad. roleary@myweeklypreview.com.au.
