Baby boomers in business could sell themselves short if they don’t start succession planning now, writes Richard O’Leary.

T

ick, tick, tick. In 2008 Australia was just three years away from the biggest small business sell-off in the country’s history as the first wave of baby boomers prepared to cash-in their decades of hard work for wellearned retirements. But in September 2008, when the US government allowed the investment bank Lehman Brothers to go bankrupt, lighting the fuse for the Global Financial Crisis, all those well laid plans for life after work had to be put on hold as business owners were hit with a triple whammy: their business profits plunged, their superannuation reserves dived and the value of their businesses dropped. Many simply put retirement on hold, but seven years later and with the economy recovering, albeit slowly but steadily, many are still behind the counters, in their offices, or hunched over spreadsheets. But the tidal wave of sales can’t be held back forever. Fifty-thousand businesses are expected to change hands every year for the next decade in Australia with an estimated value of $1.6 trillion dollars Tick, tick, tick. Opinions differ, but the baby

boomer generation roughly covers anyone born between 1946 and 1964, or to put it another way, anyone between aged between 51 and 69. It’s this generation which controls 80 per cent of the spend in Australia, owns more than half of the country’s businesses, and if stats are anything to go by, they are all about to retire, or are starting to seriously think about it. Rod Russell from Savvy Business Sales in Mooloolaba says there was always going to be a glut in the market when the baby boomers tried to sell their businesses, but the GFC has compressed it into an even smaller time frame. “They are calling it a tsunami, and it’s true,” Russell says. “We feel people that are getting out sooner rather than later are very wise. There are about 33,000 small businesses on the Sunshine Coast and 60 per cent of those are expected to change hands in the next five to 10 years,” he says. “Those who get out in the short to medium term, can just about bank on, if they plan well, what they are going to get. But if they leave it for four to five years it’s a massive question mark.” A report by the Australian Institute of Business Brokers (AIBB) has found 66

per cent of sales come about because owners want to retire, while another 18 per cent blame burnout. Combined, those figures point to a generational change in Australia’s business future. If this does happen, it will turn the Sunshine Coast market on its head. Traditionally the region has a shortage of businesses for sale and an oversupply

You need to fix things up, sort things out, you paint them, you do your market research. But most business people don’t do that to the best that they could. “There’ll be things that take days to fix, others will take years to fix. “Exit planning is not something you do over a week, a month or six months, generally it’s a five- to 10-year lead time to knock all the little sections of your business into place to make sure at any point in time it’s at maximum value. He has this advice for people looking to sell their business. “What they really need to do is sit down and take a holistic approach in aligning their personal and financial goals with their business’ performance and

became a partner in the ‘90s and with her sister bought out her mother in 1997 before assuming full control in 2005. Drummond always thought one of her six staff would take over the Maroochydore business with the help of vendor finance, but when that started to look unlikely she found a surprise potential buyer when her interior designing daughter visited from Brisbane. “I said ‘gee I wish you were interested in my business’, and she said, ‘I am.’” “She has since joined the business,

middle-of-the-road solution has been called for following the Sunshine Coast Council’s decision not to change its planning scheme to accommodate the controversial Sekisui House resort at Yaroomba. The council says the social and environmental impacts associated with the proposal put forward by the landowner outweighed the potential economic benefits. The planning officers’ report noted that while “the need for more premium hotels to be established on the Sunshine Coast is strongly acknowledged, this need does not in itself justify setting aside the concerns about the impacts of the proposal and the planning policy conflicts for the site at Yaroomba”. Sekisui House pulled its request for a Planning Scheme amendment just hours before the report was released to the public – but the council decided it was still important to make a decision on the issue. Mayor Mark Jamieson says a compromise between Sekisui’s proposed 10-storey height limit, and a previous

approval for a maximum height of four storeys, should be considered. “So there would be a lot more open space available if people could get their head around the acceptance of medium rise, and that medium rise would clearly need to not interfere with the coastal views and the view lines, or certainly not dominate them,” he says. But with the developer and community so far apart on what should be done on the site, the mayor has acknowledged that the region’s next resort will probably have to go elsewhere. “We have many other locations on the Sunshine Coast – particularly in our major commercial and tourism centres from Maroochydore through to Caloundra – where a development of this intensity and scale would be better suited and is supported by our planning scheme. President of Development Watch, Lyn Saxton, who led the fight against the resort, says the original approval should stand and the planning scheme should not be changed. “We know they [Sekisui House] won’t want to walk away with a huge

loss, but I feel this issue has had its day in court. I feel after two years of this, surely this council couldn’t put the community through anything like that again,” she says. Senior development manager for Sekisui House, Evan Aldridge, says the decision by the council is a lost opportunity for the region.

“The Coast will now lose the benefits of Sekisui House’s proposal which would have delivered 4,500 jobs over 12 years during construction, 620 permanent jobs, plus another 1500 indirect jobs in the community as well as much needed tourism infrastructure, including a five-star international hotel,” he says.

ON A KEEL AND A PRAYER

A young girl’s dream to sail around the world has finally come true – and it’s one hell of a ride. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw

our job requires you to go on shift every four hours around the clock, battle extreme temperatures and stormy seas, spend nine months in cramped living quarters and occasionally risk your life climbing 100 feet up the mast of your yacht while being battered by wind and rain. This is Stacey Jackson’s idea of a good time. As the bowman on the first allfemale team competing in the round-theworld Volvo Ocean Race which covers 38,739 nautical miles, she’s dealt with all that and more. Having just completed the fifth leg of the race when she spoke with My Weekly Preview, she was relaxing in Brazil, sampling caipirinhas (the local firewater) and had just gone paragliding. It was an adventure, she says, because she’s scared of heights. “I don’t enjoy just hanging out at heights but if I’ve got a job to do, I can do it,� she says, adding that climbing the mast of her yacht is the equivalent of scaling a ten-storey building. Imagine that building is swaying wildly from side

to side as it’s lashed by severe storms. Good times. “On average I’ve been up once every leg,� says Jackson. “We generally check it [the mast] to make sure there’s no damage. It can be quite rough. We wear helmets so we don’t knock ourselves out. In the second leg of the race I had a bit of a bad time. It was so rough I got swung off the mast and battered around.� Sailing in a round-the-world race has been a lifelong dream for the 31-year-old professional sailor, who has already clocked up nine Sydney to Hobart races. Raised in Mooloolaba and now based in Brisbane, she was seven years old when her parents purchased a boat and sent the kids for sailing lessons. “I got hooked,� says Jackson. “I think I was about 14 when I started wanting to go in the Volvo ocean race. For me it’s the pinnacle because it’s about crossing oceans and sailing across the world.� Jackson spent a year training for the race in Spain’s Canary Islands and at the time of writing, had spent six months sailing from Spain to South Africa, United Arab Emirates, China, New Zealand and

Brazil. The last four legs of the race will take her to the USA, Sweden, France and Portugal. Jackson says the all-female Team SCA is holding its own in a race – and a sport – dominated by men, with the hope of a podium finish in sight. “Sailing has always been a men’s sport but not for me,� says Jackson. She has sailed big yachts in men’s teams and was captain of a boat in Brisbane prior to the Volvo race. “I was running the boat. They’d be in big trouble if they didn’t treat me equally. I get treated just like any of the other guys and I’d prefer to be treated like that. “We’re all competing and doing a job. We got beat up pretty badly in the last leg in the Southern Ocean. We had 50-knot winds (92 kilometres per hour) and our boat got broken up, but we’ve achieved some major goals. We sailed around Cape Horn, the furthest southern peak of land in the world you can sail around. It’s a major pinnacle in the world of sailing so we’re all on a bit of a high right now. “In this last leg, from New Zealand to Brazil, we sailed so far from land that the

You need to get dressed and undressed, eat, take care of your responsibilities, get maybe two to three hours rest, get woken up half an hour before you have to go on deck. Sometimes you’ll get woken up in the middle of your off watch. It’s exhausting, but that’s the whole reason we’re there.�

ou couldn’t have picked a calmer day to fly in,” the taxi driver tells me on arrival in Wellington. “It’s been lovely today but don’t worry – it won’t last long,” he laughs. Right on cue the next day, a sunny autumn Saturday, is ushered in with a cool wind whistling hard up against my hotel window. OK, so Wellington lives up to its reputation as the windy city but don’t let that deter you, as New Zealand’s compact capital offers plenty – even if Hobbits, Orcs and Middle Earth aren’t your thing. As a first-time visitor to Wellington, I’ve caught it on a red-letter day as the city hosts the New Zealand-West Indies World Cup cricket quarter-final. Visitors throng the CBD as they make a beeline to enjoy Wellington’s prime asset – the harbour. As an Australian I’ll stick my neck out and say it’s one of the great harbours in the southern hemisphere. The teal-coloured waterfront becomes even more attractive after a cable car trip to the top of Mount

Victoria which reveals stunning views over the city and mountains. I walk through the Wellington Botanic Garden, which provides sheltered calm from the blustery conditions and follow a meandering path which gazes across to volcanic ridges dotted with colourful weatherboard houses. Comparisons to a micro San Francisco are unavoidable, but a stroll through nearby Kelburn virtually confirms it. A short drive from Kelburn is Zealandia, the world’s first fully-fenced urban eco sanctuary. This a slice of New Zealand in its pre-human state, detailing centuries of habitat loss and the longterm goal of returning Sanctuary Valley to such an environment. This is a place where visitors can get up close to native birds and reptiles like the colourful but flightless takahe, the parrot kaka and the reptile tuatara, one of New Zealand’s most recognised animals next to the kiwi. Zealandia brings out the inner nature-lover in everyone, and as a visitor I far prefer the concept of an ecorestoration project to a zoo. It’s time to test out Wellington’s much

vaunted cafe scene, so I head to a laneway on Leeds Street to find the Red Rabbit Coffee Co. This roaster/retailer/cafe is more like a lab for bean fiends as it turns coffee making into a meticulous art form via a selection of filters and single origin beans. The Leeds St Bakery next door is worth browsing if only to taste one of their salted caramel cookies. Superb. The afternoon’s culture fix is the excellent national museum, Te Papa. Not only does it detail New Zealand’s history and culture but it does so in a clever way. Best of all, entry to Te Papa is free, but there are charges for the interactive rides. A good option is an hour-long guided tour of the museum’s highlights for $NZ14.00 ($A13.67). I catch up on the cricket by walking across to a packed fan site at Civic Square to find New Zealand slaying the West Indies’ bowling. It’s been a day out for New Zealand fans and this Wellington newbie but one of the highlights of my brief stay is dinner at WBC restaurant on Victoria Street. I’m seated near a window overlooking the street and CBD in this attentive yet relaxed venue with a menu favouring flavoursome seafood. For starters, I order a plate of Bluff Oysters washed down with a glass of Amisfield dry riesling from Central Otago with the wine enhancing the minerality of the oysters. As a comparison it’s suggested I try a Tio Point oyster from the Marlborough Sounds. While the cold water Bluffs have size thanks to the South Islands Foveaux Strait, the smaller Tio Points, off the North Island are steely and intense. My main is crispy skinned tarakihi (morwong) which rests on a bed of coconut rice surrounded by crispy cassava chips and Brazilian sweet pepper sauce.

Tarahiki’s mild flavour works a treat with the strong sauce and a delicious Hawkes Bay chardonnay. The food, wine, service and ambience really lift this elegant eatery into the classy category. I step out into the Wellington evening and there are noisy celebrations underway in the bars on Cuba Street on the way to my hotel. New Zealand has comfortably won the cricket and Wellington is ready for a long night of partying. – The writer travelled as a guest of Air New Zealand and Positively Wellington Tourism.

LOOK MUM, NO HANDS Self-driving vehicles hold the key to reducing traffic fatalities and will transform the automobile industry, a top Google executive says. Ray Kurzweil, a leading expert in artificial intelligence who joined Google in 2012, told the annual conference of the Society of Automotive Engineers that the rapidly declining cost of computing power and the advances in artificial intelligence will make autonomous driving a reality. Kurzweil told the audience that autonomous driving, utilising artificial intelligence, is definitely coming. “The technology works. It’s not far away,” says Kurzweil, though he was not prepared to say just when self-driving cars will become a common sight. “Google cars have gone close to a million miles without incident,” he says. “Some day an autonomous car will cause an accident and it will be big news. But while we’ve been talking, several people have died from human drivers.” Autonomous cars “are ultimately going to save millions of lives,” he said, noting that traffic accidents kill 1.2 million people worldwide a year. It’s time to get some perspective – our lives aren’t nearly as tough as we think, writes Keryn Jones.

Cinnamon donuts are just reward for the pain of taking a big pile of small change to the bank, writes Sami Muirhead.

W

hat do you do with your change? I refer not to your mid-life crisis, but all the five and 10 cent pieces that seem to be forever falling out of pockets and lying hidden on our car floors or weighing down our pockets. My husband throws his change in a white box that sits on our kitchen bench; it has sat there stubbornly for two years. I am the only one who will ever take this change to the bank? The ninemonth old has a full-time job of looking super cute and the other two kids are only interested in destroying our house and my sanity. You see, the box of coins could very well be a giant brown snake sitting on the kitchen bench and my husband would not notice it. I am pretty sure there is a secret man pact where they all meet for a beer and a game of pool and swear to have perfect vision when it comes to spotting an attractive woman in a bikini on the far horizon, but have very poor eyesight when it comes to spotting anything that needs putting away at home. So in an attempt to organise my house after reading about that new Japanese book about decluttering, I decided to take the change to the bank. I do need to tell you I had a secret motive for my actions: I sneakily thought I could buy half a dozen hot cinnamon donuts with the change. So I took my eldest child – my four

year-old daughter – and my appetite for sugar to the bank. It was a special outing for my daughter, so to dress accordingly, she insisted on wearing her mismatched pyjamas. With a tiara. And a pink mouse tail dragging down to the ground. As parents, we know to pick our battles. After lining up at the bank looking like a family who had run away from the circus, we were finally served by a lady who looked so miserable I wondered what tragedy had befallen her. When I placed down the change, I received a look of sheer contempt. I had some of those little plastic bags thrown at me and was told to count the change. After half an hour, the four year-old was having a semi-hissy fit. I returned the bagged change to the teller, only to be given a grunt and was left wondering what on earth other people do with their change so they do not have to go through this agonising process. My friends have since told me there are change sorting machines in many banks. Genius. I have never even noticed them. Luckily for me, those sorting machines are not brown snakes. That selective vision must run in the family after all. On the bright side to our adventure, there was $40 in change. I hit the donut jackpot. imes are tough. At least, that’s what we’ve been hearing in the media almost daily for the last few years. Sure, there are some folk who are doing it very hard – no-one would deny that. By and large, we are better off than people have ever been before in human history. Sure, the GFC made us come a bit of a cropper from the boom of the 1990s and early 2000s, but booms always come to an end and we go back to normal. That makes things feel tough by comparison but, unlike most of the world, Australia did not have a GFC related recession. We hover in or around the top 10 countries for income per person in the world. The United Nation’s Human Development Index, a better measure of how a nation’s people are faring, puts Australia at number two. We are the second best place to live on the planet after Norway – and our weather’s a lot better. On the Sunshine Coast there’s

gloom because, although we are doing better than a lot, unemployment is a bit higher than some other places and average income is a bit lower. Well, that’s the cost of not living in a capital city and we all know that means more limited job opportunities. Also, we have a very high percentage of retirees who drag the income average down. Most of us came here, not chasing

“We are the second best place to live on the planet after Norway” a huge income, but because we wanted to call this beautiful area home. The right type of development and job creation can make our place even better. The wrong type will undermine what is unique and special about our Sunshine Coast. Look around! We are amongst the luckiest people on the planet. We live in one of the greatest spots in one of the most affluent countries in the world. We are not in desperate straits and we don’t need to race down a path that spoils what makes our place great. We all need to remember that. he Australian dollar has been a popular topic of discussion lately and this week I outline our expectations for the currency in the year ahead. It is expected that the Australian dollar will continue to decline over the course of the year against the US dollar. The June 2015 target remains US$0.74 and the December 2015 target is US$0.72. The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) remains in an easing cycle and will likely deliver a 25 basis point cut in interest rates by the middle of the year, taking the official cash rate to two per cent. Risks to this view are centred on a cash rate closer to one-and-a-half per cent rather than two per cent as the

country faces a protracted period of sub-trend growth. Movements in the difference between official interest rates in Australia and the US have been an important driver of the Australian and US dollar exchange rate over the past decade. Our forecasts for a 25 basis point cut from the RBA, and 75 basis points of tightening from the US Federal Reserve is consistent with Australian dollar trading in the low to mid US$0.70s range by year end. The RBA did not cut interest rates in March or April, but the central bank reiterated in its statement that the Australian dollar remained overvalued when it observed that the currency “… remains above most estimates of its fundamental value, particularly given the significant declines in key commodity prices.” The main upside risk for the Australian dollar and near-term interest rates is stronger consumer data.

Oil prices have a well-established inverse relationship with consumer confidence and the fall in the oil price boosts national disposable income. We are therefore attuned to the possibility that consumer spending could surprise positively in the current half. Moreover, there is some chance that the combination of a lower currency with lower interest rates and oil prices will prove too potent for domestic demand in coming months. Given that the futures market is pricing in another 50 basis points of interest rate cuts, a rethink of the growth outlook could be quite powerful for the Australian dollar. A FARMYARD AT THE PUB Diners at the new Parklands Tavern in Meridan Plains have been pleasantly surprised by the establishment’s unique residents. The tavern engaged the expertise of Kirstie Henning, the owner of Old Macdonald’s Travelling Farms, and introduced a range of farm animals. Launched in late April, The Yard houses chickens, piglets and lambs, a citrus grove and herb and vegetable garden. “Parklands Tavern aims to provide a small piece of farm life to many who miss out living in suburbia,’’ Henning says. “Most children who grow up on the Coast have never see a real farm animal and have no concept of what a real

lamb, goat or pig looks like. “This beautiful and natural environment has been designed as a comfortable home for the animals who will rotate between Parklands Tavern and my farm.’’ Parkland’s Tavern’s owners have gone further down the eco-friendly path as The Yard is also home to a large worm farm, where the tavern’s food waste from hundreds of meals served each week will be broken down into fertiliser for the garden beds. VOLVO BRINGING SEXY BACK Peter Atkinson from AAP reviews the VOLVO S60 POLESTAR

T

o many people, the idea of a high-performance Volvo might sound a bit like John Howard wearing leather pants. So, too, the idea of a Volvo competing

and winning – in Australia’s V8 Supercars series. Yet for all its conservative, safety-conscious reputation, the Swedish marque actually has quite a history of making cars that go fast.

A Kiwi named Robbie Francevic won the Australian Touring Car Championship in a Volvo 30 years ago. And Aussie legend Peter Brock, believe it or not, once drove a Volvo at

Bathurst (its true – look it up). So perhaps we shouldn’t be so surprised by Volvo’s entry, and success, in Australia’s V8 Supercars series, even if it’s hard to imagine a less likely candidate for this testosterone-charged muscle car series. It has certainly changed our perception of the Swedish brand. Volvo is leveraging that involvement with an ad campaign showing its V8 racer alongside a street-going model, which is described as a take-home version. But can a road-going Volvo really be sporty and, gulp, sexy? Well, yes. Meet the Volvo S60 Polestar – the hottest car to grace a Volvo showroom. The Polestar is Volvo’s equivalent of our Holden Special Vehicles, or, perhaps more accurately, BMW’s M Division and Mercedes-Benz’s AMG. And it’s a cracking thing. Interestingly, the Polestar range evolved from a pilot program in Australia and has grown to a fully fledged model, including a V60 wagon variant being sold in Canada, the US, Japan, the Netherlands, UK, Switzerland and, of course, Sweden. Unlike many of its high-performance rivals, the Polestar offers the added traction (and safety) of all-wheel-drive

grip along with upgraded brakes (by Italian maker Brembo) and a tweaked engine and transmission that gives the car an entirely sportier personality. The engine is a beauty – a turbocharged version of Volvo’s conventional in-line six-cylinder that pumps out an impressive 257 kilowatts and an even more hefty 500 Newton metres of torque. With only a mid-sized sedan to push around, that means sharp acceleration and the ability to complete passing manoeuvres in the blink of an eye. The exhaust note is decidedly un-Volvo, with the same raspy, angry quality you might expect to hear from the rear of a BMW M3, and while the Polestar’s performance doesn’t quite reach those stratospheric heights, it’s still impressively quick. In fact, the balance of sporty performance and handling versus driving comfort and convenience seems to have been nicely struck, with this car it delivers ample driving satisfaction while remaining reasonably conventional in everyday use. It’s also a fetching thing to look at – the crisp, economical design cues inherent in the garden-variety S60 have

been enhanced by an aerodynamic body kit, handsome 20-inch spider-style alloy wheels and a dazzling paint job. It’s a really pretty little machine. Unique perforated Nubuck leather sports seats hug you in tight as the Volvo carves around corners, and there’s a chunky Polestar-badged steering wheel along with alloy sports pedals. The driver has the choice of using the wheel-mounted gearshift paddles to take control of the well-sorted sports automatic – or doing so via the stubby gearshift lever. The car is amply equipped with a price tag nudging the $100k mark. And it would

want to be, with premium audio, satellite navigation, multi-zone cruise control and Volvo’s radar-guided cruise control with a City Safety emergency braking function. And, despite its performance pedigree, it’s roomy and comfortable enough to double as a family machine when required. So will this car change the way we think about Volvo? Perhaps not. A mate of mine noticed the Polestar parked in my driveway and commented: “A Volvo, eh? Have you got your hat?” Cheeky bugger. This is certainly not a car for old gentlemen in hats. Leather pants? Well, maybe.

VOLVO S60 POLESTAR HOW BIG? It’s a generous mid-sizer that’s smaller and more nimble than the big Aussie sedans it races against, but still roomy enough for a family. HOW COMFORTABLE? Surprisingly so. Big alloy wheels and grippy low-profile tyres are usually a recipe for a rough ride, but the Volvo’s ride is well-sorted. HOW FAST? It will reach the speed limit in under five seconds, which puts it in esteemed performance company. HOW THIRSTY? Squeezing this much performance from a 3.0-litre engine is bound to inflate the consumption – 10.2L/100km average. HOW SAFE? Hey, it might be hotted up, but it’s still a Volvo, so it’s one of the safest places to be. HOW MUCH? It will set you back $99,000 plus onroad costs.

t has been a big couple of weeks for motor group Lexus, with the unveiling of two new vehicles at the 2015 Shanghai International Motor Show. The ES luxury sedan and the highly anticipated RX 200t – the turbo engine variant of the all-new fourth generation RX SUV – will be available in Australia late this year and early next year respectively. The new ES features an elegant and progressive styling package, enhanced luxury interior construction and new Lexus Safety System +. Australian ES models will provide smooth power delivery and efficiency via refined 3.5-litre V6 petrol and hybrid powertrains. ES chief engineer Toshio Asahi says the comprehensive updates provide further polish to the refined sedan. “Our development concept was ‘take the ES to the next level of elegance and progressive luxury’,” Mr Asahi says. “The Lexus ES is renowned for its innovative exterior and interior design. We wanted to build on that and make it

Sunshine Coast car dealership has won a coveted motoring award as a result of its dedication and attention to detail with consumers. Renters won’t always leave silently or quickly and some tenants may appeal your decision, so read up on the legal process for eviction … such as written notice and all the other following procedures.”

TAKE OUT INSURANCE Purchasing landlord insurance, before your tenants move in, is also a really good idea. This insurance covers you in the event that your tenant defaults on the rent, damages the property or steals from the property. “Make sure you compare different insurance providers by getting quotes to ensure you’re signed up with a competitive deal,” advises RAMS. “If your property is in an area prone to natural disasters … a standard insurance policy may not do the trick, so always check before signing on the dotted line.”

IN GOOD REPAIR Keeping the property in the best possible condition is also important. Karen Stehr is the residential and commercial property manager with

TAKE THE TIME TO INSPECT Stehr invites her owners along the inspections. “If investors are in a position to visit their property at least once a year, an owner’s eye is better than anyone else’s,” she says. “Attend a routine inspection with your property manager to review any current maintenance, preventative maintenance and any improvements you may wish to make in the future.”

Clearly the best surfer didn’t win in Margaret River. Underscored and overscored is how I saw it. On to happier news, this weekend is looking the goods. A good bump in swell with light WSW winds. So I hope you have the brownie points stocked up or grab a divorce lawyer. Last weekend my sister grabbed her poor husband and dragged him to Maleny for a high tea when the surf was pumping. I begged her to release him, but it just made her more determined. The moral? Get up early and leave the phone at home!

ESTUARY: Quality bream are moving out on the rising tide at both Maroochy and Mooloolah bars with pillies, mullet and prawns the best bait. You can f nd chopper tailor around the Motorway Bridge pylons at night. There’s the f rst of the winter luderick at the motorway bridge, the second pylon is working best with green weed gathered at Pincushion. SURF: Conditions last week allowed tailor and dart to come in close to Pincushion and up to Mudjimba. You can get sea bream at Alexandra Headland using mullet f llet, the best time is dusk. Tailor are off the rocks at Coolum and Peregian, and have been the biggest so far this season, use pillies and chrome type spinning, weighted lures. The best time for these is dusk. OFFSHORE: The Barwon Banks are f ring for snapper, pearlies and parrot with squid and pillies the best bait. Large squid are being caught using squid jigs around Old Woman Island. Spanner crabs are being caught in their usual haunts using bonito f llets and pillies for bait. FRESHWATER: Somerset Dam has been steady for bass and golden perch using live shrimps in the warmer part of the day, with f sh being taken from 5 to 10 feet down. The usual spots off Queen Street, Red Rock and The Hump are producing better sizes. Boondooma is another impoundment returning bass and golden perch on live shrimps and river prawns. Jigging is working just as well, but a sounder is a necessity to locate f sh schooling up.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT We all have to pay our share of taxes, writes Richard O’Leary, unless you’re a multinational company.

I

have a confession to make – I really don’t mind paying tax. Now don’t get me wrong, I don’t do it with a smile on my face, or have any wish to pay more, but I do get why we pay taxes and I’m happy to pay my part for the greater good. We are blessed to live in a country like Australia where we enjoy a good standard of living, well-maintained roads, quality hospitals, a safety net for people without jobs and pensions for those who no longer work. Could they be better? Of course. Our transport, health and welfare systems could all be improved, but compared with the rest of the world, they are first class and we should all be grateful. So I don’t mind paying taxes to support them, but I just wish big business had the same attitude. A recent report by Fairfax Media revealed the largest 900 Australian

companies save $25 billion a year through tax deductions. That’s enough cash to wipe out two-thirds of Australia’s current budget deficit. You know what I find the hardest thing to stomach? Those “double Irish sandwiches” which were mentioned at the recent public hearings of the Senate inquiry into corporate tax evasion. You can’t order these sandwiches at your local Celtic pub, but you will find them on the tax avoidance menus of some of the world’s biggest companies. This is how it works. Apple sells an iPad in Australia for $600 – but $550 of that sale price goes to Ireland to be taxed, leaving just $50 to be taxed here. The secret is Apple buys its iPhones, iPads and MacBooks from its overseas operations and then resells them in Australia so it gets taxed only on its local profit. The result of this and other

measures means Apple Australia reportedly paid just $80 million in tax last year on profits of $250 million and revenue of $6 billion. Google was just as bad. It reportedly paid just $7 million in tax in 2013 on profits of $46 million and revenue of $358 million. All the while, Australia’s small businesses, which are the engine room of the economy, are paying 30 cents in the dollar. The treasurer has recently admitted this is unfair to all the mum and dad businesses out there trying to earn an honest buck. But words are cheap. If Joe Hockey is to shed his image as a cigar-chomping protector of big business, his upcoming federal budget needs to crack down on the proverbial free lunches so average Aussie families can put food on the table. roleary@myweeklypreview.com.au
