Food faddism is taking the country by storm. Paleo, meal replacement programs, dairy-free, gluten-free and detox diets are the norm in thousands of households right around the nation. Now more than ever, there is a focus on healthy living but the question is: are we getting it right? And, how can we improve our health for the long-term? It’s time to push aside the fad diets and body image misconceptions and take a committed and fresh approach to our wellbeing.

hink about it – every single item of food you consume fuels your body. The sugar, salt and fat runs through your bloodstream, directly affecting the way your body functions. If there is one thing leading Australian nutritionist Cyndi O’Meara has learned, it’s that the general population is naïve when it comes to this. “I think Australians generally want a quick f x, whether it’s a diet or a pill. They hear about something, go on a diet for six weeks and it’s a great quick f x. Then they go back to their old ways and wonder why they put the weight back on and are not feeling great.’’ O’Meara tells it how it is. She is matter-of-fact yet passionate, and it is these traits that have helped her steer hundreds of clients on to the right path. After 30 years in the food and health industry, she has no qualms in dishing out a few home truths. “People are becoming disrespectful of what their bodies are,” she says.

She says while there is a growing percentage of the population who want to make lifelong changes, many people want a quick f x. “I f nd it fascinating that people put food into their bodies knowing it’s causing their aches and pains, or put food in their body and think it has nothing to do with the aches and pains.’’ So, how do we embark on a change – one that is easily sustainable within our busy lifestyle? One way people are tackling their health problems is with the paleo diet, advocated by celebrity chefs such as Pete Evans. Also known as the caveman diet, it centres on meat, fruit and vegetables. This month, O’Meara spoke of the benef ts of the lifestyle alongside Evans on his Paleo Way tour. She says it’s a good starting point for people wanting to improve their health. “Paleo takes out dairy, grains and legumes,” O’Meara says. “You are left with fruit, nuts, meat and vegetables.

Peo are becoming PPeople disrespectful of what their bodies aree Cyndi O’Meara “They neglect their bodies. “We are being dumbed down by marketing and advertising. “They are putting in (to their bodies) margarine, low fat milk, Vegemite and all told it’s iconic Australian food… we believe it. We’re not waking up. We’re walking around in a daze.’’ She’s concerned about the rise in dairy intolerances and the use of pesticides on wheat farm soil, and about supermarket-bought apples that in six months remain unchanged, despite being kept in a desk drawer. It is these issues and the way food is being interfered with that worries her the most. She says these are some of the reasons people need to get back to basics, buying fresh produce at farmers markets and avoiding packaged products. However, O’Meara believes today’s population has little patience when it comes to matters of health and weight loss, hence the uptake in fad diets and meal replacement programs, which she has no time for. “What paleo does is it allows the body to calm down. The reason it’s working for so many people is that we are eradicating the main allergies we are getting from the manipulation of dairy, grains and vast amount of antibiotics. “To me, it’s a healing diet and may not be a diet for life.’’ The author of Changing Habits Changing Lives says the key to achieving a lifetime of health is to change things step by step. Start with salt: remove it from the pantry and replace it with Himalayan salt. Throw out all of your white sugar and replace it with unref ned rapadura sugar. O’Meara says it’s never too late to make a change, but the earlier the better. “There is a kind of imprintation on the child and what you consume around your child in the f rst six months to a year. hormonal imbalances, constant low moods, migraines, anxiety, chronic fatigue syndrome, nausea.’’ This is only one step in achieving a long-term solution. “I think there are many pieces to put together, and you have to focus on all of them at the same time, not one at a time. “The f rst one is keeping time for yourself. We’re not aware of stillness and enjoying life. Take time to smell the roses.’’

oo often than not, we focus our health and wellbeing on what we put into our bodies and how we train them. While diet and exercise are extremely important, we often forget to nurture our mental state and lack the ability to find the right balance for our physical and mental health. One woman who understands how intricately the mind and body are intertwined is Advance Wellness naturopath Jodi Chapman. Chapman’s career as a naturopath began nine years ago and during that time she has travelled extensively throughout the country training with experts in a range of topics including psychology and neurotherapy. However, her journey to mending the link between mind, body and soul began much earlier than this. As a child, she suffered allergies, daily migraines, sinus problems, anxiety and bowel disease. “I was at the doctors all the time… millions of doctors but no answer,’’ Chapman recalls. “It was all symptoms of allergy. “It became my life challenge to resolve these things in me.’’ She has since not only resolved health issues for herself, but hundreds of other people suffering from unknown allergy problems. “I watch TV and see, for example, the Michelle Bridges adverts. She’s in a market where she’s advertising something where people want their outsides changed,’’ Chapman says. “They do all the diet and exercise but not necessarily look at the whole big picture, like a stressful, overworked life. It all ends and they can’t complete it.’’ Instead, Chapman says your goal should be about eating and exercising correctly but with the aim of getting your world happier and future healthier. So, how do we achieve this? She believes the way a person feels and focuses on issues comes down to a number of things, including biochemistry. “I test every single patient for allergies. In nine years I’ve come across two people who were not allergic… everyone else comes back with at least 15 to 70 or 80 foods that show up as allergies. “Allergic reactions can cause f uid retention,

Jodi Chapman Chapman’s next steps for f nding the right life balance is being around those you love and to focus on a goal. “Always do something during the week or day to work towards that goal. Whether it’s working towards a degree, building a business, a triathlon, any kind of career change. Whatever it is you love to do. Make sure you write down your goals.’’ Finally, surround yourself with beautiful things to appreciate. There is no quick f x to f nding the right life balance. It takes commitment and dedication but the rewards are endless. “It takes about 12 weeks to get used to a new lifestyle,’’ Chapman says. “You need to f gure out how to get everything in there, then you need to move into a second phase of another 12 weeks – the mind transformation and then 18 weeks to set it in stone. “Make it forever. The minute you turn back to what you used to do you will revert back to how you used to feel.’’

There’s no denying that life is busy and filled with work, school drop-offs, children’s activities, caring for the family, the dreaded housework and overflowing social calendars. The excuses just roll off the tongue: I don’t have time, I’m too tired, I need new gym clothes. Instead, we find ourselves forfeiting exercise for quick fix weight loss techniques or pouring money into a gym membership that never gets used. The Australian Government Department of Health guidelines indicate that regular physical activity has important benef ts for physical and mental health. It reduces the risk of many health problems such as heart disease, anxiety, type 2 diabetes, depression and some cancers. Physical inactivity is the fourth leading cause of death due to non-communicable disease and is estimated to be the main cause for about 21 to 25 per cent of breast and colon cancers and 27 per cent

“It comes back to a power of choice,’’ she explains. “Look at the positive things about being healthier. Healthy is having the conf dence and the opportunity to be active and happy. It helps in the whole wellbeing.’’ So, you’ve decided you want to take the healthy road, what next? Bingley says to aim for 30 minutes of exercise a day, but if this isn’t attainable stick with 10 minutes. After all, 10 minutes is better than none. Once you’ve decided to dedicate time to exercise, the next step is f nding the right form for you. “Go back to what you enjoyed doing when you were a child. Did you love riding a bike? Then do that,’’ Bingley says. “Find the thing that is yours and you might have to try lots of things. “It comes back to the why? If it’s a big enough ‘why’, then that will push you. Do you want to play with the kids down at the beach? Think of the ‘why’.’’ The big question: how important

is exercise when teamed with the right diet? “You can’t have one without the other,’’ Bingley tells My Weekly Preview. “You can exercise your heart out but if you are not fuelling your body with the right fuel to do that, you are not going to perform. “It’s about fuelling your body and your brain.” She f nishes with a commonsense piece of advice that we would all do well to follow. “Make exercise part of your lifestyle.’’

According to a recent Freakonomics report, the key to getting the most out of exercise is the three I’s – intensity, individualisation and I like to do it. In other words, train hard for shorter periods, find what works best for you and focus on the form of exercise you enjoy.

Local psychologist turns writer to help kids deal with death WORDS: Angela Takats

Each book comes from a real life therapy situation and contains stories written the way a child would talk

hona Innes had no plans to write a childrenâ€™s book series. The clinical psychologist, who recently moved back to the Sunshine Coast after many years of running her own psychology practice in Victoria, says her book project came about as a â€œhappy accidentâ€?. â€œUsually after a session with a child I write them a letter to remind them of the things we have discussed. Itâ€™s a way of reinforcing concepts and of letting mum and dad know whatâ€™s going on,â€? Innes says. â€œIt can also be a helpful tool for teachers.â€? â€œOne day we had a call at the practice from a nanna who was worried about how her grandchild was dealing with a death in the family. We canâ€™t take referrals from grandparents so we werenâ€™t able to see the child, but I started thinking about a letter Iâ€™d written to another child about the topic of death,â€? she says. After discussing the letters with her colleagues, Innes decided it would be a good idea to reproduce some of them so they could be used to help other kids. She sent them off to a contact in Melbourne to get a quote for printing and the next thing she

knew she was being offered a deal by The Five Mile Press. â€œThey were keen to turn the letters into a childrenâ€™s book series and did a wonderful job of matching my words with a talented illustrator from Hungary called Ă?risz AgĂłcs, who created the imagery for the books,â€? she says. Four of Innesâ€™ letters have been turned into books, published last year. Each deals with emotive issues children face in direct and gentle terms, allowing childrenâ€™s feelings and problems to be more easily shared and discussed with family and friends. â€œEach book comes from a real life therapy situation and contains stories written the way a child would talk. The idea is to explain tricky concepts in simple ways,â€? she says. The f rst in the series â€“ Life is like the Wind â€“ focuses on the complexities around death, loss and grief. It acknowledges the range of feelings associated with losing a loved one whether human or non-human. â€œWhen you talk to a child about death they will understand the idea that the body ends but they canâ€™t quite grasp the concept that the body could have a spirit,â€? she says. After 25 years living in Victoria, Innes says sheâ€™s happy to be back on the Sunshine Coast and is looking forward to the release of two more books in August. â€œIâ€™m def nitely here to stay. My son has just started at the same school I went to in Buderim. I still have my practice running in Bendigo with 14 psychologists working down there for me, so thereâ€™ll be a few trips each year back and forth, but itâ€™s good to be home.â€?

Innes shares tips on children and grief â€˘ Be honest, but gentle and respectful with your children about death. Young children may have questions that adults might f nd diff cult to answer. Let them know that you may not know the answer, but share what you think and explain that different people might have different thoughts, beliefs and feelings. â€˘ Allow the child opportunities to express how they feel. Art supplies and a special book to draw or write in about feelings could help. They also may want to collect pictures or symbols of their time with the person who has died. Donâ€™t force them to do any specif c activities, but have some resources close to hand. â€˘ If there is a funeral or ceremony and the child wishes to go, be sure they have a basic understanding of what might happen and be very sure they know that many people who go may be upset. â€˘ Knowing how important your adult reactions are to children makes it extra important that adults take care of themselves and their own emotions and make sure they seek out appropriate support and places to vent if needed. â€˘ Overall, itâ€™s most important that children learn it is OK to be sad when sad things happen and there are lots of ways that beautiful and meaningful sadness can be shared and expressed.

Fall in petrol prices boosts drive holidays to Coast

eole are packing the car and heading to the Coast in increasing numbers, thanks in part to lower fuel prices. The surge of drive holidays to the Coast has been welcomed by local tourism operators. Sunshine Coast Destination Ltd CEO, Simon Ambrose, says the dramatic fall in petrol prices has resulted in more visitors from both inland Queensland and the southern States. “The Sunshine Coast has always had the benef t of easy accessibility, with our own Sunshine Coast airport and Brisbane Airport being just over an

hour’s drive down the road, but with petrol prices dropping from $1.50 a litre to just $1, it has prompted a strong revival in drive holidays, which has benef ted all sectors of the industry, from camping to luxury resorts,” Ambrose says. Last year, the Sunshine Coast recorded a 10.9 per cent increase in domestic visitors and a Stateleading 9.4 per cent growth in international visitors. “We will build on this trend during 2015 with the launch of Australia’s Nature Coast’s Great Australian Beach Drive and a new Food Trail App later in the year. The new products that we are releasing in 2015 ref ect one of the key strengths of the Sunshine Coast – its diversity,” he says. According to Ambrose, the combination of good weather, signif cantly lower petrol prices, and a declining Australian dollar has given the Sunshine Coast tourism a turbocharged start to 2015.

he wet season has well and truly kicked into gear, driven by the monsoon season. The season runs from December to March, but wet season can last a couple of months either side of this. The monsoon season is responsible for most of tropical Queensland’s annual rainfall. Cairns averages 14 millimetres in July, whereas in February it’s 440 millimetres. Monsoonal rain is caused by a change in wind direction from summer to winter. During the dry season, the winds usually move from the land to the ocean, however during

the monsoon season they change direction from the ocean to the land. This change makes the air much more moist, as the winds originate from warm water to the south of Asia and the Indian Ocean, and push in from the west to north-west. The winds during a monsoon season shift because the land and ocean absorb heat in different ways. The ocean stays at a more even temperature throughout the year, while land temperatures are much more variable. Solar radiation across tropical areas is the strongest during summer and heats the land faster than the ocean. When this happens, an area of low pressure develops above land as the warm air rises. The warming of the ocean happens slower, therefore the water and a layer of air above the water stays cooler for longer. This air is moist and more dense and creates an area of high pressure. Air f ows from high to low pressure, therefore from ocean to land, and we see the monsoonal f ow develop.

Captive breeding program to boost grouper numbers A scientist from the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) is leading an international team to develop a captive breeding program for one of the world’s largest reef-dwelling f sh. The Queensland grouper can live up to 50 years and grow three metres in length. While it is a protected species in Australia – the grouper is threatened in various part of Asia where it’s a highly prized item on the menu of seafood restaurants. In Hong Kong, groupers can fetch up to $180 per kilogram at live f sh markets. USC’s GeneCology Research Centre director Abigail Elizur, who is a Professor of Aquaculture Biotechnology, is leading the research effort, which involves scientists from Vietnam, the Philippines and Cairns. The program will look at new ways of breeding the species in captivity in order to establish a lucrative aquaculture industry. “In the wild, both male and female giant groupers take many years to reach sexual maturity so

f shing is unsustainable because they are caught before they have a chance to breed,” Professor Elizur says. The project will use techniques developed at USC’s GeneCology Research Centre, including genetic marker identif cation as well as slow-release hormonal therapies and germ-cell transplantation that were developed by international collaborators in the United States and Japan respectively.

Business must get with the program in a tech-oriented market Words: Sam Walker

he boundaries of the marketplace have expanded like never before. No longer constrained to a village, a city, a region or even a nation – geography is a small part of business consideration as the marketplace has globalised – thanks to the rapid advance of technology. And director Capability and Innovation at Telstra, Michael Ossipoff, says it is time for businesses of all shapes and sizes to embrace the opportunities this expanded marketplace has created and is continuing to create. “We’ve never gone through such a time of unprecedented digital change as we’ve seen in the last three years,” Ossipoff says. “And I would predict that the next three years will make the last three years look like amateur hour. If anything, things are accelerating.” He says that means the traditional prisms we look at our businesses through must change, because business models have never been open to the interpretation and reconsideration they are now. “This is as big a deal as the industrial revolution, in many ways it’s bigger,” he says. Not one to go with the f ow, Ossipoff is encouraging others to look forward and look around and let their imagination run wild. “I guess the way I think about it is, if everyone’s heading west, you often go east. If you want to just go to where the game is, you’re sort of missing the point. You want to go to where the game is going. “And so my background is working in dot-com type organisations and thinking about how to look at things in rather different fashions. “Because if we’re not continually pushing and moving forward I think that really… you’re kind of decaying to a degree. “[I have always been] interested in the possible as opposed to the status quo. And to continue to see things improve.” CHANGE AND CHALLENGE Keeping up with technology can be exhausting.

There will be new risks to mitigate and management issues that come from trading with people you can’t see.

For some it’s confusing and the constant learning can be time consuming. But Ossipoff says it is important to embrace the changes and look for new ways of doing things. The key is to focus on your business and what it does and embrace the technology that can help move it forward. Find the markets you might previously not have been able to access. With two million apps running on smartphones, he says you are never going to master them all. But if you focus on the few that will enhance your business, help your customers or improve your eff ciency you will probably reap the rewards. Ossipoff says consumers have never been more adaptable. They have embraced the online self-service model made possible in recent years and businesses who have understood this potential have done incredible things. The challenges lie in predicting what people will be doing in the future. What jobs will be available, what types of roles should businesses develop and what products will be in demand? “There will be new economies being built and new marketplaces and new job roles being built

EMBRACING THE TECH REVOLUTION Ossipoff will be talking in detail about competing in a boundary-free marketplace at the Caloundra Chamber of Commerce Better Business Breakfast next month. He will outline the importance of evolving business practices along with evolving technology, innovating to take advantage of the changing marketplace and some of the challenges that arise from this fast-paced change. And one of his biggest messages is that technology is not just for large-scale organisations like banks, insurance companies, airlines and telecommunications giants. Quite the opposite, in fact. Ossipoff says technology can be embraced and utilised to incredible advantage from even the smallest micro-business. Smaller scale organisations have the f exibility to move more quickly in response to change. “It is not a case of, ‘it’s not for me’,” he says. “It absolutely is for you and the opportunity is how do you understand it and take advantage of it?”

2015 big for home renovation

n increase in house renovations and new residential building approvals are likely to be trends for the Sunshine Coast housing industry in the coming year. HIA senior economist Shane Garrett, who will be speaking at the Sunshine Coast HIA Industry Outlook breakfast next Thursday, says the future of the housing industry is looking positive for Queensland and the Sunshine Coast. While recovery levels have not reached pre-GFC highs, he says the industry is starting to accelerate. Some of the factors inf uencing the Queensland market are very low interest rates and signif cant population growth across the state. “The houses are f nally starting to be built for all of the additional people that came to live in Queensland in the last f ve, six, seven years,” Garrett says. “The interest rate situation is a big plus and Queensland is quite well placed out of the situation with the dollar.”

USC pioneers sustainable tourism in Southeast Asia University of the Sunshine Coast sustainable tourism experts have contributed to a ground-breaking set of standards adopted by countries across Southeast Asia. The standards will ensure quality experiences for tourists and f ow-on benef ts to local communities. Cambodia led the project – its Minister of Tourism, Dr Thong Khon, has worked with USC for more than f ve years and is an honorary doctor of the university.

Professor Carter, who is director of USC’s International Projects Group and a member of the executive of the Sustainability Research Centre, says the standards considered the wide range of existing and potential tourism products offered by communities. USC is continuing work with the ASEAN on six other sets of standards: green hotels, home stays, food and beverage services, public restrooms, ecotourism and tourism heritage.

He says this will drive international tourism and expects the Sunshine Coast to benef t from that, which will help improve conf dence in the economy and encourage building activity. “Renovations will benef t big time from low interest rates,” he says. Housing prices are also starting to increase and he says the increased equity people have in their homes is a very important source of funding for renovators.

Sunshine Coast employers are urging students to think about their study choices and avoid qualif cations that could result in low employment prospects. Director of POMO Creative, Stephen Burton says as a business owner he is not in a position to take risks with inadequately trained employees. “There are a lot of ‘quick f x’ training providers out there offering

the earth, but the reality is that our clients demand quality design outcomes and slapdash training just isn’t going to cut it,” Burton says. TAFE Queensland East Coast general manager Paul Wilson says students only get one chance at a Certif cate III level qualif cation under the Certif cate 3 Guarantee program. He advises students to check the provider’s credentials carefully.

A Line in the Sand

ome of the region’s longest serving life savers have been given a double treat. Not only were they the guests of honour at the launch of a pictorial book of the sport in the 1950s and 60s – they also found out the real name of ‘Limey’, the local surf life saver who authored the book. Bob Bowerman’s English past earnt him the nickname when he joined the Maroochy Surf Life Saving Club as a 16 year-old in 1956 – and that’s what most people have called him ever since. He was one of the club’s most dedicated members and as a young man, he hitchhiked from Brisbane every weekend. The name of the book, A Line in the Sand, comes from the traditional way of starting a competition in that era. It captures the camaraderie and community spirit of the club, and amongst its pages are dozens of pictures of surf lifesavers over more than two decades, along with some of the biggest boards you’ll ever see. The release of the book at the Maroochydore Library comes less than a year before the Graham (Asho) Ashton, QLD Maroochy Surf Life Saving Surf Board Champion 1955 Club celebrates its centenary.

From dog trainer to cat saver John Law used to be a dog trainer in law enforcement, so he is very familiar with four-legged friends. But it is not a loveable mutt that has taken over his home recently – it’s a feisty feline. Law and his wife adopted Mr Mendez from the Sippy Creek Animal Refuge about six months ago and in that time he has made himself at home. He is a companion for the other household cat, which was adopted from another refuge, although there are often a few spats between the two pets – but no bloodshed to date. Mr Mendez was one of the cats featured in MWP’s pets of the week column last year. “We went to Sippy Creek (Animal Refuge) because it was local,” Law says. “They do such a great job.” And he decided to let the cat choose him. He sat down and waited for the f rst cat to approach him. It was Mr Mendez. They think Mr Mendez is about

six years old and they don’t know anything about his history. While he loves a cuddle, he has a f ghting spirit and occasionally takes a swipe at people – and the other cat. But Law takes it all in good spirit. He recommends that others consider adopting from the refuge. “It really is rewarding. You do feel good doing it.”

< The thrill of learning to fly a light plane

PILOT FOR A DAY Many people fly to the Sunshine Coast for a holiday, but an increasing number of people are also using the visit to learn to fly. WORDS: Richard O’Leary

he early morning rain has started to clear, but dark clouds still hover and the wind has picked up. I don’t usually worry too much about weather, but the fact I’m about to get behind the controls of an aircraft for the f rst time has focused my attention on any potential problems. I arrive for my f rst lesson (a Christmas present from my wife) at Inspire Aviation at Caloundra Airport. My six year-old’s response to the news I

was learning to f y is still ringing in my ears. “I’ve got a feeling this is not going to go well.” I’m greeted by Chief Flying Instructor Rob Fulton who asks me if this is my f rst f ight. “Yes,” I say. “Me too,” he replies. “Just kidding, this is my third day.” Rob has actually been f ying for 27 years and he opens the half-hour pre-f ight brief ng with words a little more reassuring.

“In all those years I’ve had the same number of landings as take-offs, so everything is in equilibrium.” This pilot patter follows hundreds of similar brief ngs since he started the f ying school two years ago. In the last 12 months, he’s supervised more than 670 hours of f ying. For many people like me it’s a one-off to get a feel for what it is like; for others it is an introduction to a possible new career. It also provides another experience for tourists – with most of Rob’s clients coming from Brisbane. Brief ng f nished, Rob walks me to the tarmac and we climb aboard ‘Dimples’, an Evektor Sportstar with a bubble canopy and dual controls. Its branding makes it look like something Evel Knievel would pilot. He shows how to use the joystick to turn left, right, climb and descend. He then gets me to taxi out to the runway using the foot pedals to steer. For anybody worried about what happens next – Rob resumes control to prepare for take-off. The beauty of dual controls is the trainee shadows what the pilot is doing as he gets the plane off the ground. I can feel every move he makes as he increases the power, lifts the nose of the plane, gets us airborne, and makes many tiny adjustments to deal with the turbulence. Rob calls it learning to f y through osmosis. Within a couple of minutes we reach the pub formerly known as Ettamogah and Rob gives me control of the aircraft at 1000 feet. It’s an

High flier: the writer views the Glass House Mountains from the air incredible feeling. I know if anything goes wrong, I have a pilot with thousands of f ying hours ready to take over – but still, I’m incredibly focused and tense. I do a 180-degree turn (move the joystick right until the plane tilts at 45 degrees and level out before straightening) and head south. Flying at 1700 feet now, I take in the glorious Glass House Mountains, cruising past Wild Horse Mountain, Tibrogargan, and then on to Mount Mee. Turning east I start to descend, passing Bribie Bridge as I head towards the southern tip of the island. By the time I start the U-turn to head back up the coast, the aircraft is down to 500 feet – so low I can see someone f shing on the beach. Rob points out the heavy artillery guns

from World War II that dot the beach, which are in differing stages of disrepair caused by 70 years of exposure to sand and salt. We’ve been in the air for nearly an hour when Rob takes back the control of the aircraft as we approach Caloundra. I shadow the controls again as he shows me how to get down safely, keeping his perfect record intact. He still has the same number of landings as take-offs.

Reviving the Eurozone

n January, the European Central Bank unveiled an historic quantitative easing (QE) program aimed at reviving the economic prospects of the eurozone and removing the threat of deflation with a bigger than expected pledge to buy 1.2 trillion euros ($1.76 trillion) of assets, including government bonds. There are two main channels through which QE (creating new money electronically to buy f nancial assets) is likely to work in the eurozone. One is the signalling effect. By adopting the policy, the ECB is sending a clear message to markets and to f rms that it is

determined to push inf ation higher. The other is through the exchange rate. The euro has already been weakening since last spring, but the QE announcement sent the euro to its lowest level against the American dollar since 2003. European stock markets rose while bond yields in countries such as Spain and Greece fell. The ECB set a total pace of 60 billion euros ($88.3 billion) per month, starting in March. The intention is to continue at this pace until at least September 2016. Further purchases beyond that depend on whether the inf ation outlook is consistent with the ECB’s inf ation objective, of below but close to two per cent. Hence, purchases will amount to at least 1.2 trillion euros ($1.76 trillion), but could exceed this if the inf ation outlook is seen as too weak in September 2016.

The 60 billion euros ($88.3 billion) monthly pace includes the contribution from the existing asset-backed securities and covered bond purchase programs, currently worth 10 billion euros ($14.7 billion) per month, but will also include purchases of investmentgrade securities issued by euro area central governments and agencies, and European f nancial institutions. In a concession to pressure from Germany’s economic and political establishment, national central banks will assume 80 per cent of the responsibility for losses or any default of their national debt. German concerns centre around spendthrift nations being unwilling to undertake structural economic reforms by effectively mutualising debt risks. Greece has been excluded until its assistance program is judged to be on track by the Troika (ECB,

European Commission and IMF). ECB President Mario Draghi mentioned that Greece may have to wait until the existing ECB holdings of Greek sovereign debt mature in the summer before new purchases can be made. People who think they deserve it will never have it. What’s the strangest meal request you’ve ever had? A few years back I was asked to serve a raw beef f llet to a guest. Cold, straight out of the fridge, RAW straight on the plate. Whatever tickles your fancy, I guess? What do you enjoy most about working on the Sunshine Coast? I have been lucky to have travelled a lot and the Sunshine Coast is such a beautiful place to live. I f nd if you go out of your way to cater for the locals they will support you. What task do you love being able to hand over to your apprentice and why? Currently it would be cutting the burger buns at Hello Harry, it never

ends. Or in a week I’m sure it very well may be rolling rice paper rolls or making dumplings in JUNK, our new place. Talk us through the process of creating a new dish? For me it always starts with my suppliers, I talk to them on a daily basis. I will think about the protein f rst and then work from there. I also draw inspiration from cookbooks, the web and through speaking with colleagues. What do you think Sunshine Coast diners are looking for? Consistency and value for money. Last meal on earth? I recently ate at Joel Robuchon’s restaurant in Paris and had an amazing entrée of fresh diver scallops with white truff e. It was truly amazing. Piece of equipment you can’t live without? Thermomix. The RC is the f rst mainstream two-door Lexus since the rather ungainly SC430 â€“ a highly priced, awkwardly styled convertible that sold in modest numbers then faded away a couple of years back. The RC couldnâ€™t be less like that machine. Instead, itâ€™s perhaps the best expression yet of the brandâ€™s swoopy new design ethic and, as a bonus, itâ€™s attractively priced in this premium GT market. Its elegant, low-slung stance is reminiscent of the rarest and most expensive Lexus â€“ the $700,000plus LFA supercar, of which only a handful have made their way to Australia. About 10 per cent of that price, the RC will be far more common â€“ if thatâ€™s the right word â€“ for a Lexus on Aussie roads. Early indications are for about 400 sales a year for the RC, and some dealerships are already reporting waiting lists of several months. The RC will be offered in the now-familiar Lexus trim levels â€“ Luxury, F-Sport and Sports Luxury. It will have an initial choice of two engines â€“ the garden-variety RC350 with a 3.5-litre V6, and the high-performance, V8-engined RC-F. Itâ€™s likely the companyâ€™s new turbocharged, four-cylinder engine will f nd its way beneath the RCâ€™s long, sexy bonnet. Rivals include Audiâ€™s similarly styled A5 (which offers diesel, four-cylinder, V6 and V8 petrol options), and BMWâ€™s equally slinky 4-Series coupe (again with diesel and turbo petrol variants). The Lexus will be more than competitively priced, starting about 66-grand ($73,970 on road) for the entry-level model. We drove the RC350 in mid-spec F-Sport form ($82,250 on the road). Itâ€™s the model tipped to account for up to half of all RC sales with its nice balance of sportier style, comfort and value. steering adjustment, seven-inch display with satellite navigation, reversing camera, parking sensors front and rear, eight airbags and touch-sensitive climate control system, the F-Sport adds 19-inch alloys, a superb 17-speaker Mark Levinson audio, LED headlamps, sportier seats and steering wheel, plus assistance features such as a blindspot monitor and lane-change assist. The high-end Sport Luxury gets more goodies such as adaptive variable suspension, pre-collision

safety system, radar cruise control and moonroof. All models get the drive-select system to choose between eco, normal and sport modes, plus an upgraded, touch-pad style cabin management system. Because it’s a Lexus, it has all the hallmarks we take for granted – serenely quiet and solid, great seats, great audio, great workmanship and an unmistakable attention to detail. Other Lexus traits are becoming equally familiar. The cockpit follows the same basic theme of most recent Lexus models with a prominent horizontal strut across the centre of the dash bisecting the centre-stack and adorned by a classy analogue clock. It’s straightforward, reasonably functional, and attractive. Also familiar, but perhaps too much so, is the RC350’s V6 powerplant. This is a well-evolved engine found across the Lexus range and, in almost identical form, beneath the bonnet of many Toyotas as well. It’s smooth, punchy and reliable, but seems a little off the pace in terms of technological advancement.

It will scamper to the speed limit in just more than six seconds, but it’s not all that economical and despite its easy-driving nature, that puts the Lexus a bit behind its Euro rivals. That said, the RC drivetrain is as smooth and seamless as we’ve come to expect from this marque, with the eight-speed auto doing a silky job of putting those kilowatts into action. Handling is generally predictable, as is the f rm yet compliant ride. The two more expensive versions of the RC get an innovative, dynamic rear-steer system, which Lexus says improves low-speed manoeuvrability and enhances steering agility. We were pleasantly surprised by some of the practicality of the RC, particularly the deep and useful boot space of 423 litres. The rear seats are easy enough to access, thanks to electronically folding and sliding front seats, but legroom and headroom for rear-seat occupants is somewhat limited. It all adds up to a package that is almost as easy to live with as it is to look at.

are not ready to go on public roads and highways. Regulation and legal changes are a major hurdle, and it will be some years before highly automated cars feature on the roads. Britain’s government says the next step is for off cials to publish guidelines for companies to test the cars in real-life scenarios on roads – including highways – by summer. All cars in the trials will have a qualif ed driver present so they can take control should anything go awry. Domestic road regulations will be reviewed by 2017, but off cials say fully driverless cars are unlikely to be used on roads until 2030.

ritain has begun testing driverless cars, launching the first official trials ahead of a series of planned rule reviews to accommodate the new technology. The British government is spending $37 million on the project, with four trial centres stationed around the country. Four types of autonomous vehicles under trial, including a shuttle that looks like a larger golf cart and a compact two-seater ‘pod’ car, were unveiled in London. The project is “still in the early days”, Transport minister Claire Perry says, but added the new technology has the potential to make roads safer and attract global investment. Britain has ambitions to lead development in driverless cars, which are also being tested in American cities by companies including Google. Car companies from MercedesBenz to Nissan are also developing self-drive vehicles, though most

Home loan shopping More people get a second opinion on where to go for dinner than what home loan to choose.

ew research from Aussie Home Loans reveals just 33 per cent of home buyers ask for a second opinion on their home loan, even though it’s usually the largest financial commitment of their lives. The research reveals more home buyers ask for a second opinion on where to go for dinner (38 per cent), their next holiday destination (36 per cent) or which car to buy (45 per cent) than what home loan to choose (33 per cent). According to the survey of more than 1300 home buyers, f nding the right home loan is equally low on the priority list, with only 36 per cent of home buyers saying they would prioritise f nding the right home loan or shopping around for the lowest rate (34 per cent). Home buyers were much more likely to prioritise: • the price of the property (73 per cent), • location (65 per cent), • type of property (62 per cent), • size of property (54 per cent), • close to amenities (51 per cent), and

• has a backyard (39 per cent). Aussie Home Loans executive chairman John Symond says while f nding the right property is important, f nding the right home loan should be just as important. It is after all a big commitment to make, with the average home loan taken out by Aussie customers in December worth more than $380,000. “It’s def nitely worthwhile to see what your bank can offer you, but it could save you literally thousands of dollars to get an expert second opinion,” he says. “A home loan is one of the biggest f nancial commitments we make in our lives, so to see it sitting so low down on the priority list is a concern. Even saving just a little bit on your interest rate can add up to a lot of money saved over the life of a home loan, so a second opinion really should be at the top of every savvy home buyer’s priority list.” With consumers today generally more satisf ed with their main f nancial institution (MFI) than ever before, one third (35 per cent) of home buyers believe it is important to get a home loan from their MFI. Of these, almost half (47 per cent) are willing to pay an extra $76.77 on average per month, or $921.18 annually, to stay with their current bank. “When you think about how big a f nancial commitment a home loan is and how much you end up paying over the life of your loan, it’s surprising

that some home buyers are willing to pay more than they need to. “We have customers who have been able to add a new kitchen, send their daughter to private school or take the family on an overseas holiday because of the money we have saved them,” Symond says. Consumer advocacy service Choice has this advice on choosing the right home loan: • With some great rates around at the moment there’s a lot of competition between lenders, so don’t be shy to ask your bank for a better deal. “Even negotiating, say half a per cent lower rate on a $300,000 home loan over 25 years can save you almost $90 per month and more than $25,000 over the life of the loan,” says Justine Davies, CANSTAR f nance editor. “Alternatively, if you negotiate a lower rate and keep your monthly repayments at the original level, you can potentially knock years off the Continued >

That’s money for nothing; it’s money that some borrowers are currently handing their f nancial institution on a silver platter.” • At a time of historical low interest rates, low f xed rates sound tempting. But they can come with the downside of reduced f exibility. High break costs apply if you want to repay the loan early or relocate and you are often not allowed to make extra repayments. • Interest rates are just one of the costs to consider. You should also check the regular fees and charges. Fees and establishment costs can make a big difference to the amount you pay for your mortgage. Extra charges on your loan can include application fees, valuation and lender’s legal fees, lender’s mortgage insurance, monthly or annual fees, break costs or exit fees. Choice also advises you to look out for features of the home loan, including: • Extra repayments. Some loans might limit the amount you can pay before you are charged a break fee. • Redraw facility. With many loans, if you make extra payments you can get the money back later. This allows you

to store your savings in your mortgage. But some redraw facilities are much easier to access than others, so check what paperwork you’ll have to f ll out and what costs are involved. • Repayment holidays. Some mortgages allow you to take a break from repaying for a short period, for example if you’ve just had a baby. Check the conditions, as you might have to make higher repayments after the repayment holiday. • Interest only. Paying interest only can be a useful feature for investors. It’s usually available for f ve years but some loans offer it for up to 10 years. It can be risky though, as generally you’d want to pay back the loan as quickly as possible to minimise interest charges and avoid owing more than the property is worth. • Mortgage offset accounts. You deposit money into an account and instead of receiving interest on it, you receive a reduction in the interest due on your loan. Because offset accounts don’t actually pay you any money, they don’t add to your taxable income – so, like redraw facilities, they offer tax advantages.

SURF REPORT with MWP’s man in the water

This week’s surf report comes from Canada where I am snowboarding with my long-term surfing buddy. It’s a bluebird day and very fast conditions. My GPS has clocked us at 67 km and I think cracking 80km is a definite possibility. Now where are my underpants? As for the surf report, you have waves coming but with some strong winds attached, so I think Kings Beach will be where everyone heads, maybe the Bar but I think the wind might get on to that too. Time for the hot tub...catch you next week.

FISHING REPORT with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World

ESTUARY: River fishing has been the only alternative with the recent winds. Whiting are taking yabbies along the drop off on the south-west end of Goat Island. You’ll find bream on the night tides along Bradman Avenue using prawns and mullet fillet. Flathead, trevally and estuary cod are working herring schools around the motorway bridge pylons with well-placed lures returning quality fish. SURF: Not much action with beaches too rough to fish. However, dawn and dusk is the time to work Maroochy North Shore and Maroochy Bar for tailor, sharks and jew. OFFSHORE: Rough seas this week with no reports from the wider grounds. When conditions settle, mackerel will feed along the dirty water line. Mid-water floaters after berley will return sweetlip and parrot in close off Point Cartwright. FRESHWATER: Lake Baroon is best for bass, spangled perch and Mary River cod on a variety of plastics, deep diving lures and earthworms. The bigger impoundments of Somerset and BjelkePetersen have been firing for bass and golden perch on trolled deep diving lures once fish are located.
