was late f ling my column this week – got distracted talking about the last episode of Game of Thrones, season four. Right now you’re either looking quizzically at the page or you’re nodding you’re head – only a GoT fan knows the feeling. If you’re like the handful of us in the MWP off ce who just can’t get enough of the TV show – adapted from an epic set of novels by George RR Martin – you might too have lost a little bit of productivity on Tuesday morning, dissecting the story and analysing the characters. What is it about the mystical world that has so hooked us? How is it that a few years ago, most of us had never even heard of Westeros, and yet now it seems half of the country feels a personal connection to Tyrion, Daenerys and the loveable Jon Snow? Jarna Baudinette this week has been asking the same question, as she takes a look at what’s hot in popular culture. It’s not just Game of Thrones we are all into, which is just as well (we have to wait until next year to f nd out what happens in Mr Martin’s world). f you still think it’s rude to wear your sunglasses in a photo, you might be surprised to learn that soon you’ll be able to take photos with them. Google Glass – which incorporates a computer with tiny LCD screen and touchpad into a pair of glasses – is at the forefront of a wearable technology movement destined to change the way we interact with devices. Glass wearers can do everything from read emails and text messages to make phone calls, get directions, use apps and take photos or video, quite literally with the blink of an eye. Google Glass was tested by a group of carefully selected ‘Explorers’ over two years before a small release was offered to US customers – for $1500 apiece – last month. There’s no word on when the product will be available in Australia, but local developers are already hoping to cash in – one Melbourne-based app developer recently told the ABC he was working on apps for visually- or hearing-impaired wearers, while others are developing transport and shopping-based apps. Another Melbourne software developer has created a Google Glass app to ensure he never again misses his morning train.

The voice-controlled app tracks a wearer’s location and, when asked, displays nearby public transport options on the gadget’s eye-mounted translucent screen, says 25-year-old Long Zheng. Users can say “OK Glass” and then “trains near me” to bring up the nearest train stops along with route numbers, destinations and departure times. Substitute “trains” for “buses” or “trams” and the app does the rest. Timetable apps are popular on smartphones and tablets, but Zheng tells AAP they make more sense on Google Glass’s heads-up display. “It’s a lot more convenient,” he says. “You don’t have to fumble with any buttons and won’t run into people or trees.” Another location where Google Glass has been trialled is hospitals. Last month a doctor became the f rst surgeon in the UK to use the device in an operating theatre, and medical specialists say the technology has great potential as an educational tool, as medical students will be able to watch procedures take place from the surgeon’s point of view. However Google Glass’s ability to record and upload video directly to the internet is a cause for concern for some.

“Two of the key issues we have had to address whilst using Google Glass in the operating theatre are patient conf dentiality and privacy,” surgeon David Isaac told AAP. “We take these matters very seriously and have been using the past six months as a trial period to address the issues whilst still aiming to get the very best from the potential that this technology has to offer within surgical education. “We have been investigating the ability to stream and store video to a secure network that can only be accessed by those with the relevant consent, and whilst we can’t currently use Google Glass to connect and stream to the internet, we are just about to start live-streaming to junior doctors and medical students.” As well as privacy concerns, some Explorers have raised the fact that constantly looking slightly to the right is distracting and detracts from real world experiences. Others complained the original slimline prototype was dorky, which prompted Google to develop a range of frames and styles, including sporty and corporate options. GAME OF THRONES Based on a series of novels by George RR Martin, HBO’s Game of Thrones was one of the most highly anticipated television premieres of all time and is now the most talked-about show on air. The records don’t stop there – as well as being filmed on the largest soundstage ever constructed, GoT also boasts one of the largest ensemble casts ever assembled and has one of the most passionate and active fandoms ever. That doesn’t just include your neighbours and everyone you work with – US President Barack Obama is apparently a fan, and last year Dutch foreign minister Frans Timmermans gave a speech using quotes from Martin’s novels to frame the challenges of European politics. People are so into Game of Thrones they’re even naming their children after characters from the show – in 2013 Arya, after heroine Arya Stark, jumped 300 places on the list of the most popular girls’ names in the US. If you meet anyone named Tyrion or Daenerys in years to come, you’ll know why.

VAMPIRES Believe it or not, television has also been responsible for a resurgence in whisky. Thanks to the enigmatic Don Draper from Mad Men, Canadian Club neat is now the drink du jour for young men wanting to impress: Draper drank so much Canadian Club in the show’s first series that its distiller, Canadian-based Beam Inc, recorded a 23 per cent increase in sales of its Reserve blend that year.

The undead have been a f xture in pop culture since Interview With a Vampire hit the big screen in 1994 (or since Bram Stoker wrote Dracula in 1890). But over the past decade it has seemed like every second book, f lm or TV series has featured a vampire or two – True Blood, The Vampire Diaries and who could forget Buffy the Vampire Slayer? Twitter users can expect out-of-this world commentary after American astronaut – and avid tweeter – Reid Wiseman arrived at the International Space Station on May 29. Even before his Soyuz f ight took off on May 28, Wiseman was posting pictures of himself and his crewmates, German astronaut Alexander Gerst and Russian cosmonaut Maxim Suraev. But the real fun began once he arrived at the station, parts of which have been orbiting the Earth since 1998. Among his f rst tweets: a photo of the ship that brought him to the station. The caption read, “I can’t stop looking outside!” A series of photos of Earth have followed, often accompanied by exclamations about how beautiful and amazing everything looks (“Solar arrays glisten approaching Australia”). The fresh fruit, vegetables and eggs produced in Caloundra City Private School’s permaculture garden is certainly in great demand, but year six teacher Gerard Maguire says students get a lot out more out of the garden than fresh food. “For many of them it is such an eye-opening experience and not only teaches them about where their food actually comes from, but that there is a huge difference between a product that they have grown ‘from the ground up’ and something that comes from the store,” Maguire says. “There are also ethical considerations such as there is less food wastage and the carbon footprint is greatly diminished when you grow it yourself.” The school started the permaculture garden in 2008 in

permaculture garden, says the project is also an effective way of linking the school community with the surrounding community. The garden is predominantly the responsibility of the year six students because Plant Lifestyles is

one of the units in their science curriculum. “Year six is an ideal age for students to be immersed in the whole experience of permaculture – an 11-/12-year-old student is the perfect balance of mental awareness, physical capability and unbridled enthusiasm.” He says part of the educational component lies in discovering ways to adapt the growing plan to suit the local environment, an essential part of the permaculture concept. “This year one of our projects is to build a greenhouse so that we may propagate our own seedlings, thereby reducing our initial costs when it comes to planting season. “In the future we would like to introduce activities that help us to become more effective as gardeners. “Inclusions such as a shredder to help us create compost, worm farms, water features for native frogs and additional fruit/nut trees are all on our ‘wish list’ and as time continued page 18>

When we pick items such as bananas or sweet corn, we usually have a day where we make them into smoothies or barbecue them... and money permit, will eventually become part of our permaculture Project.” At least once each week, the whole class gets into the garden to work on one of their current projects, maintain the garden or simply play with the chickens. But Maguire says a permaculture club after school on Thursdays involves children from grade one to secondary school and between 15 and 30 students get involved. “The students are the greatest advocates of the permaculture

garden,” he says. “They have such great enthusiasm and are always prepared to learn.” Parents also occasionally get involved and are huge supporters of the concept. Of course, a permaculture garden means fresh produce is constantly available and it is not surprising it is in great demand. Maguire says large crop items are usually sold to parents and staff at a fruit and vegetable stall run by the year six students. “When we pick items such as bananas or sweet corn, we usually

have a day where we make them into smoothies or barbecue them and give them to the students who help out in the garden. “Some of the produce doesn’t even make it out of the garden, as we often come upon students from the infant grades merrily munching away amongst the rows of plants, which is just as it should be. “Eggs from our chickens are also greatly sought after and there is a staff/parent waiting list maintained by year six [students] for those who wish to purchase them.” He says the community conscientiousness is shifting towards f nding healthier ways of living. “And for many schools the concept of educating children in this regard has become a reality. “Given our human propensity to use things faster than we can create them, it is essential that schools take shared responsibility, along with parents, to foster an understanding and practical knowledge of how to create our own sustainable environment.”

New University of the Sunshine Coast psychology research will judge the effectiveness of smartphone applications designed to help people with sleeplessness. Psychology Honours student Bec George is seeking more participants to trial free apps for two weeks and f ll out questionnaires on their experiences, noting any changes in sleep patterns, moods and mental functioning. â€œSleep is fascinating and there is so much we donâ€™t know about it,â€? George says. The Smart Hoodie, invented by two American students, allows the wearers to send text messages by touching different parts of the garment. In the video demo, running your f ngers along the inside of the hood sends a message saying “I miss you mum”, while pushing up the sleeves lets her know you’re stuck in class. Simply pushing a button on the sleeve can also start a Skype chat session. Users can change the preset messages and numbers to ref ect other common templates. New York University students Rucha Patwardhan and Alina Balean came up with the idea after other wearable devices, such as Google Glass, were developed. “[We are] putting the technology behind a cell phone into something truly wearable and everyday – a portable, wearable phone,” Balean explains. Monash University’s art, design and architecture graduate Ken Chen has designed an exoskeleton to help f ref ghters battle high-rise infernos. The Advanced Firef ghting Apparatus suit can be strapped over clothing to enhance the wearer’s walking, running and carrying abilities. Weighing in at 23 kilograms, it can carry loads of up to 91 kilograms

t looked up, its beady eye piercing each person with its cold, reptilian gaze before gliding to the front of the boat and the pork chop dangling tantalisingly from a hook. When it comes to viewing Australia’s saltwater crocodiles, this is about as up close and personal as most people want to get. Although those looking for an adrenalin rush might like to jump in the Cage of Death and dive with the crocs at Darwin’s Crocosaurus Cove. Our small group was satisf ed viewing them at such close quarters in the murky waters of their natural environment, without the need to come face-to-face with those massive teeth and powerful jaws. This was the f rst of several dominant males, affectionately dubbed with names like Aggro and Stumpy, spotted in this stretch of

MWP’s Sam Walker made a short winter escape to the warm climes of Darwin, where she got up close to crocodiles and enjoyed the Territory’s rugged nature and city sights.

• Modern crocodiles have been around for about 100 million years. the Adelaide River on a delightfully warm and sunny June morning. We were about 65 kilometres from Darwin, on board one of the boats operated by Adelaide River Queen Cruises, for an hour-long Jumping Crocodile tour that showed very clearly the strength, speed and power of these formidable creatures. Watching them propel themselves out of the water at such close quarters, it is very clear why it is essential to keep all body parts well within the boat. While the crocs take centre stage on this tour, there is time to enjoy the scenery and the fast action of the kites, diving to the water’s surface. It is an invigorating way to start a Northern Territory holiday but not everything in the Territory is about crocodiles. Continued page 28>

<from page 28 For those looking for a holiday destination, or just a short winter break, there are plenty of ways to occupy your days. If time is not a problem you might want to venture out to the world-renowned Kakadu National Park. But for those on a tighter schedule Litchf eld National Park is an easy day trip from Darwin and def nitely worth a visit. It was in true Territory style that we saw this wonderful display of nature, thanks to a barefoot friend and former tour guide, who escorted us to Litchf eld in a clapped-out Nissan Patrol in which air-conditioning meant winding the windows down. It was full of Top End character as we shuttled to various park highlights, starting with the red mud mounds of the cathedral termites. Towering more than f ve metres, they are an incredible display of architecture, like the nearby magnetic

termite mounds, which are aligned north to south. The landscape is rugged but still green from the recent wet and further into the park waterfalls cascade over rock faces and tumble into pristine pools. On the weekend of a public holiday the park was busy and the popular swimming holes are packed. But sinking into the cool waters of Buley Rock Pools was delightful. While the Territory is renowned for its outstanding natural wonders, Darwin has plenty of sights to take in on a short break and a substantial history to learn about. Ravaged by war, and decades later, f attened by the wild winds of Cyclone Tracy, only a handful of pre-war buildings still stand. The Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory at Fannie Bay includes a Cyclone Tracy exhibition that is well worth a look. Across Darwin Harbour East, Point Military Museum outlines Darwin’s little-known war history. You can see these and other Darwin highlights by jumping on board various tours. We got on the Darwin Explorer, a big red double decker bus you can hop on and hop off at key points around the city. We started and f nished our tour at Fannie Bay and headed to the Darwin Ski Club, opposite the museum for a late afternoon drink overlooking the harbour. Sunset markets at Mindil Beach are a great way

to f nish a Sunday during the dry season and the many food stalls are def nitely a drawcard. So if you’re seeking a bit of adventure, a warm winter break or an up-close-and-personal experience with a crocodile, think about a trip to the Northern Territory.

BUDGET HITS AGE PENSION ENTITLEMENTS

here are some very important changes to the way income is assessed for the Age Pension and the Commonwealth Seniors Health Card (CSHC) effective from January 1, 2015. Currently, retirees of Age Pension age can optimise their pension or Senior’s Health Card entitlement by structuring their investments so they are not subject to the deeming provisions. This includes establishing account-based pensions. An accountbased pension is an investment that converts your superannuation savings into an income stream at retirement. Centrelink excludes a large portion of the account-based pension, called the deductible

amount, from the income test when calculating your rate of Age Pension. In the case of the Seniors Health Card, the pension is totally disregarded. This method is most advantageous, particularly for people who receive other sources of income, such as employer superannuation pensions or overseas pensions. Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end. From January 1, 2015, this concessional treatment of account-based pensions will cease for new applicants for the Age Pension. As a result, the current deeming system will be extended to include account-based pensions as well. Under this system, the investment is assumed to be earning an interest rate of up to 3.5 per cent per annum, rather than the actual income received. The big negative here is the loss of the deductible amount that currently greatly reduces, or even eliminates, the income assessed. For example, a recently retired male with a

superannuation account balance of $250,000, drawing the minimum pension of $12,500 per annum, would currently have no actual income counted by Centrelink after the application of the deductible amount. Under the new system, however, deemed income of $8750 per annum may be taken into account and reduce Age Pension entitlements. At this stage, the application of deeming to account-based pensions has been legislated and will apply to income support payments, such as the Age Pension, from January 1, 2015. It has also been proposed in the recent Federal Budget that this treatment also be extended to the Commonwealth Seniors Health Care Card from the same date, although this extension has yet to be made law.

Preventing prostate cancer According to the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA), approximately 120,000 Australian men are living with prostate cancer, and it’s estimated the number will increase to 267,000 by 2017. The cancer is the second most common cause of cancer death, after lung cancer. PCFA says early detection is the key to better outcomes and f nding a potential cure for the disease. Quirky but cool WORDS Peter Atkinson

on’t judge a book by its cover. Good advice. Because, while some might go for the cubist look, many won’t be won over by the funky appearance of the Kia Soul. Call it boxy. Call it ugly. The car park attendant at work called it “crap”. The Soul is certainly a car that sparks opinions, good and bad. But beneath that polarising exterior lurks a thoroughly likeable small car. Or hatchback. Or wagon. You can probably call it any of those things and not be out of line. Kia urges its potential buyers to “think outside the box”, which is a strangely perverse way of looking at it. The Soul made quite a splash when it f rst arrived on the Australian market a few years back with its unorthodox, squared-off design. At the time, its maker Kia was still in the throes of establishing its brand credibility in Australia – so perhaps that brand snobbery drew a few extra sneers for the Soul. But if its purpose was to draw attention to the brand, it certainly did that. While its sales in Australia were a relatively modest 1779 in f ve years since its launch, the Soul has sold more than 750,000 units worldwide in that time.

In the years since the Soul’s arrival, Kia’s brand of futuristic, cutting-edge styling has spread its way across the Korean maker’s range – delivering perhaps the most attractive array of small and medium cars currently on the Australian market. In that company, the Soul continues to stand apart. But along with its corporate twin Hyundai, Kia is quickly establishing its place as one of the real brands to watch. Fittingly, then, the Soul has been relaunched – with a refreshed but still rather cumbersome shape – but also with many of the impressive new features which are underpinning the brand’s growing success. Quality f nishes, smart engines and transmissions, along with the sharp value we’ve come to expect from Korean makers. So don’t be too quick to write the Soul off. Look deeper and you’ll f nd an engaging little machine whose peppy engine, smooth-shifting

transmission and sharp handling make it quite a pleasure to drive. We tested the Soul in automatic guise – there are only two model choices, the other being a six-speed manual – and ended up liking it more than we expected. Painted, as it was, in the most garish shade of lime green you can imagine, I wasn’t initially all that fussed. But the Soul quickly won me over. The interior, for a start, is a welcoming, attractive place. It’s roughly based on Kia’s Track’ster concept car – and features a theme of circular shapes in its cockpit – from the deeply recessed instrument panel to the little round tweeter speakers perched on the door sills. Square outside, round inside. Again, not to everyone’s taste, but it seems to work. Interestingly, the f rst Soul was designed in the United States and the updated model also hails from continued page 49>

Styling apart, it’s nicely f tted out for a car in this price bracket. Six airbags, reversing camera, cruise control, electric windows and mirrors, Bluetooth connectivity and tyre pressure monitors are among the kit. A trip computer that sits between the speedo and tachometer allows you to scroll through information ranging from average speed and consumption to an instant readout of your driving eff ciency, as

well as the familiar distance-toempty calculation. The dials, too, are crisply displayed and easy to read. There’s a chunky, attractive multi-function steering wheel allowing you to adjust audio settings, cruise control, answer your phone (via Bluetooth connectivity), scroll through the trip computer information and even switch the car’s set-up from “normal” mode to “sport”. That, in turn, delivers some slightly amped-up performance from the sweet little two-litre, four-cylinder engine – as well as slightly sportier transmission settings. In either format, the Soul jumps away from the traff c lights and rattles through the gears seamlessly. The engine pumps out a respectable 113 kilowatts and 191Newton metres, and does so in impressively quiet fashion. Its performance is more impressive than the f gures would suggest. Ride is well resolved with bumps readily absorbed, and handling is completely without vice.

It turns in reliably and feels nicely centred and stable, belying its rather ungainly gait. Its impressive handling and performance should come as no surprise – the Soul, after all, shares its drivetrain and running gear with successful Kia models like the Cerato and Cee’d. Kia boasts that this secondgeneration model enjoys improved cabin quietness, better-quality f nishes and materials and improved passenger and luggage space. The Soul’s chunky design means interior space is impressive for what remains a relatively small machine. The wheelbase on this model has been stretched by 20 millimetres – the car’s overall length has grown by the same amount and it’s 15 millimetres wider – but its roof ine is 41 millimetres lower. The net result is more room for occupants. That odd-looking squared-off rear end brings an added benef t – cargo space is up four per cent to 238 litres – or a useful 878 litres with the rear seats folded forward. A STRESS-FREE WAY TO BUY A CAR Buying a car – new or used – can be time consuming, confusing and often frustrating. She says the biggest concern most buyers have is the initial meet and greet with a sales person. “There are not many of us that enjoy a high pressure situation and clients have an expectation when buying a car that they will be pressured or misled,” she says.

Toyota and Panasonic will soon make it possible to avoid those ‘oh-no’ moments after leaving home, such as forgetting to switch off the air-conditioning. The two companies are co-operating on a cloud-based in-car system to monitor and operate home appliances. The new cloud-based telematics service will make life easier and less stressful by letting people keep tabs on and operate their home appliances from the wheel of their car. The technology is being presented by Toyota at the Smart Community Japan 2014 exhibition in Tokyo this month, prior to the new service being launched on the market in the second half of this year. The concept is part of Toyota’s ongoing work to make mobility smarter, more convenient and more comfortable, and to increase the value cars can add to people’s lives. It makes use of the existing cloud-based Toyota Smart Center, which already links people, cars and homes, and the Panasonic home appliance control application. For example, an application linked to a vehicle’s GPS data can remind the user to turn off the air-conditioning before leaving home, and enable them to turn it on remotely before returning.

KEEP YOUR HOUSE TIDY

Nothing turns away potential buyers faster than a mouldy bathroom or dirty dishes in the sink. If you’re time poor, hire a professional cleaner to give your home a good scrub before it goes on the market. Otherwise, keep it as clean and tidy as possible during the inspection process. This can be diff cult if you have small children, so invest in some large storage crates and pack away as much clutter as possible – this will also make it easier to move when you sell. If you are selling a tenanted property, remember that inspections can be a pain – a box of chocolates or personal note thanking your tenants for their patience won’t go astray,

and will make them more likely to keep the home tidy in the interim.

As you get toward the business end of the selling process, your real estate agent will need to speak to you about offers, contracts and settlement. This may sound obvious, but speak to your agent about the best method of contacting you – whether it’s by phone, email, Skype or text – and what times you will be available to talk. If your agents receive a good offer they may need to move quickly to secure you the best possible price, and if you don’t return their calls this will be diff cult. Remember, good communication runs both ways – if you establish guidelines early in the process, you and your agent are more likely to have a positive, fruitful relationship

When you list your home for sale, brief your accountant and solicitor so they are ready to begin the conveyancing process as soon as you accept an offer. Righto then! Indonesia has got some solid fun waves on the way, so if you are packing your bags, enjoy! I have a friend who is testing out south Sumatra next week with the prediction to be up to 10 foot on his f rst day with no wind! Let’s say he is having sleepless nights! And nothing left in his bowels. Ha! I reassured him that he’ll be f ne but to pack an extra board! But rule number one – DO NOT hesitate in the take-off! While it will be funny for your friends the reality won’t be the same for you! Okay, locally it will be hit and miss this weekend with light onshore winds. Monday looks the goods so an early surf for the start of the week is my call! The line-ups are empty so enjoy!

FISHING REPORT

ESTUARY: Quality bream will be on the bite from the Maroochy Bar, Cotton Tree and across to Twin Waters with top of the tide best. They seem to come through in schools, bite for an hour and move on, so berleying is a must. Flathead and trevally are taking lures and baby blue pillies from the Cod Hole area down past the motorway bridge and at the mouth of the Maroochy. SURF: Large bream will be moving into gutters along North Shore and Cotton Tree with fowl gut and mullet f llet best. The rising tide is producing the better quality. Tailor will be on pillies and lures at the Pincushion area with dawn and dusk best. OFFSHORE: Caloundra 12 Mile and Barwon Banks are returning snapper, pearl perch and trag jew using squid and pillies. The Gneerings and Murphy’s have been active for quality mixed reef f sh including sweetlip, parrot and squire. FRESHWATER: The cooler weather has slowed down the action at most impoundments with Somerset working okay for winter bass and golden perch on shrimps and spinner baits. Both Borumba and Lake Macdonald are pretty stirred up and the only action has been during the warmest part of the day with saratoga and small bass taking f oated shrimps and worms.
