owntown Caloundra is now even more welcoming and inviting thanks to Caloundra Greeters, improved roads and landscaping, and the chance to win $5000, just for shopping locally. Walking in Downtown Caloundra you’re now more likely to be greeted with a smile, thanks to the 57 volunteers who have joined the Caloundra Greeters program. Sunshine Coast Council, in partnership with the Rotary Club of Caloundra Pacific, started the program, rostering volunteers across four-hour shifts, Thursday through Saturday, in Downtown Caloundra. Caloundra greeter Marilyn Harris says the program helps make Caloundra a friendlier place. “People love to see a friendly face, ask questions and have a chat about Caloundra, plus isn’t it great to make someone’s day?” Marilyn says. “Thanks to the great work of the volunteers, the program has had a positive response from the community and is now set to continue. That’s great news for Caloundra.” Division 2 Councillor Tim Dwyer says the $3-million fourth stage of the Bulcock Street Streetscape Project is well underway, including the planting of mature trees, improved accessibility for the local community and events and new street pole banners. “These improvements will be a great asset for promoting our major events and further establishing Caloundra as an events destination,” Cr Dwyer says. The 22 new brackets will soon hold banners promoting The Caloundra Music Festival starting in September, Caloundra Film Festival in October and Hot 91.1 Ignite Chilli Festival in November 2018, as well as Seasons Greeting banners for Christmas/New Year. WORKING TOGETHER TO CREATE AN INCREDIBLE CALOUNDRA Three powerhouse businesswomen have joined forces to ensure Caloundra’s economy and culture thrives into the future.
I
n September 2017, a passionate group of Caloundra CBD business owners banded together to form a legal incorporated association. The Caloundra Business Alliance is a 50-member strong grassroots organisation whose sole aim is to support and grow local business in Downtown Caloundra. At the recent AGM, Selina Smith was voted in as president and is supported by six local volunteer business owners on the committee. Selina is owner/manager of two businesses in Caloundra – Cozie Swimwear and The Big Swim and will be celebrating 21 years of Cozie Swimwear this month. The CBA has already delivered on a number of initiatives in its first year, namely Talk like a Pirate Day and Christmas in Caloundra, which included events like Festival of Lights, Santa’s Workshop, Christmas Tree Lane and Santa’s Breakfast, to name a few. The CBA successfully launched the Shop Caloundra brand, which includes the Shop Caloundra Loyalty Card, and the new gift card. The Caloundra Chamber of Commerce is one of the largest regional Chambers in Queensland. Its role is to represent, support and connect over 500 members with each other and the broader community. The Chamber runs the successful Caloundra Street Fair every Sunday in Bulcock Street, as well as the seasonal Twilight Markets and oversees the Hot 91.1 Ignite Chilli Festival in November. Olivia Sainsbury has recently joined the Chamber as executive officer. While she has only been on the Sunshine Coast for three years, Olivia knows the local business economy well, having worked
with the Caloundra CBD Taskforce, the Economic Development branch, and more recently the Sunshine Coast International Broadband Network project at Sunshine Coast Council. The central business precinct of the traditional town centre of Caloundra has faced a range of challenges over the past five years and is currently subject to significant streetscape infrastructure works being undertaken by the council to deliver on stage four of a Bulcock Street master plan.
THERE IS SIGNIFICANT ENERGY FEEDING THE IMPROVEMENT OF BUSINESS CONDITIONS In recognition of the potential disruption that stages one through to four have had on Downtown Caloundra, Sunshine Coast Council has led a range of economic development initiatives, including the engagement of a business development facilitator for Downtown Caloundra, Terese Finegan. With previous experience in owning and managing her own retail store for several years, plus working across a number of industries in construction, design, and digital marketing, Terese is

well placed to deliver initiatives and activations for the Downtown Caloundra Invigoration Strategy. Working with the 360 businesses in the CBD to deliver these programs requires a united focus and by working together, these three organisations are achieving incredible results for the Caloundra business community. One major outcome of this collaborative relationship is the Hot 91.1 Ignite Chilli Festival in Downtown Caloundra on November 17. Members of each organisation are actively involved in the planning of this annual event. It aims to boost trade to local retailers, accommodation providers and hospitality businesses by bringing in an additional 10,000 people to the area over the weekend. Between the Chamber, the Alliance and the council, Caloundra businesses can be assured that there is significant energy feeding the improvement of
business conditions in this fast-growing pocket of the Sunshine Coast. Whether it is the implementation of new and innovative projects designed to retain and attract customers, enhance the capacity of front-line service providers or bring thousands of festivalgoers to the area, Caloundra’s interests are being well serviced. Meeting each fortnight, these three women on behalf of their organisations are continually planning, designing and implementing new strategies for the betterment of Caloundra. The result of their collective efforts is however dependent on the support, collaboration and involvement of the entire Caloundra community. As such, the support and involvement of local families and local business is vital. So, grab yourself a Shop Caloundra Loyalty Card, attend an upcoming event and prepare yourself for a day of chilli-inspired food and entertainment in November.

BULCOCK STREET’S $3-MILLION UPGRADE IS CHANGING THE FACE OF CALOUNDRA
T
he transformation of Caloundra’s Bulcock Street is well underway and on schedule to be completed in early December. The $3-million upgrade is set to further revitalise the Caloundra CBD, continuing improvements made in the lower section of the street through the upper section (the area from Minchinton Street to the Knox Avenue intersection). The recent run of fine weather has seen construction progressing well, with both aboveground and underground construction advancing, along with landscaping works including seven new mature trees already planted. Along with the new trees and shrubs,

this stage of the streetscape upgrade includes new footpaths, a reshaped roadway, additional street furniture, directional signage, public art and smart city technology. Division 2 Councillor Tim Dwyer says the streetscape upgrade was an investment that would create a vibrant new look for Bulcock Street and transform the Caloundra CBD. “This next stage will complement the design and character of the previous stage to ensure a sense of connectivity and continuity along Bulcock Street,” Cr Dwyer says. “I’ve enjoyed seeing how the previous stage of work has further enhanced
Bulcock Street’s upgrade is on track to be completed in December downtown Caloundra and I’m looking forward to this transformation extending. “Since that previous stage some new businesses have joined us, the new landscaping and trees continue to grow, businesses have received positive feedback about the ‘new look street’ and the new road profile has greatly improved accessibility for events.” Two-hour parking remains on Bulcock
Street. Motorists are also encouraged to park in the multi-storey car parks on Ormuz Avenue and Cooma Terrace during construction, both of which offer free parking and are less than 100 metres walk to Bulcock Street. FUN GUIDE You don’t have to look far in Caloundra to find something fun to get stuck into. But if you are in need of some inspiration, here is a selection of the excellent activities you can enjoy around town.
QUEENSLAND AIR MUSEUM The Australian Military Aircraft Display is a special event coming up at the Queensland Air Museum that will feature the Lockheed Neptune, Lockheed Ventura, and the Caribou. Visitors to QAM on September 22 will have the opportunity to climb inside these historically significant aircraft, each having been lovingly restored by QAM teams. Both the Neptune and Ventura were primarily designed as surveillance aircraft and were affectionately known as the ‘sub-hunters’ for their
capacity to detect enemy submarines. The Neptune was recovered from Mareeba, disassembled by 12 QAM volunteers in February 2016, transported to Caloundra on six trucks, and reassembled over a period of two years. The Ventura, a WWII aircraft, was recovered in 1991 as a wrecked fuselage, where it had been used to store pig and chicken food on a farm. In poor condition and missing wings, tail, engines and all internal components, the restoration has been underway for almost three decades. The DHC-4 Caribou is fortunate to end up at QAM, having been involved in three horrific crashes while serving in Vietnam; this aircraft has many, many stories to tell.
