WHAT’S THE DISH? KYU LAS VEGAS

KYU at the Fontainebleau Las Vegas is the kind of place that makes you excited to try everything on the menu, and honestly, we wish we could have.

From the moment we walked in, the service was incredible. Our server made us feel completely at ease, answering our questions and giving just the right suggestions. It felt like someone was guiding us through an experience rather than just a meal, and that’s exactly what KYU is all about.

We decided to go with a few items that caught our eye, and each one was a flavor-packed win. The Pork Belly Bao Buns were melt-in-your-mouth perfection, with tender, savory pork belly that you can’t stop eating. We also couldn’t wait to try the Japanese Sweet Potato, which brought a subtle sweetness that balanced the stronger flavors on the table. We also selected the Grilled Octopus, which was smoky, tender, and perfectly charred on the outside.

For the heartier dishes, the 8oz Filet Mignon was everything you want in a steak: juicy, flavorful, and perfectly cooked. While the Brisket had that deep, smoky richness that makes comfort food feel like fine dining. We loved that the main courses came with an array of sauces, each one unique, so that every bite could be its own little flavor adventure.

We also couldn’t deny the cocktails, and believe me, they were next-level. The Wynwood Mule was crisp and refreshing, and for espresso martini lovers, the Good Morning, Vietnam! had a fun, bold twist that made it a standout. Did we pass on dessert? Of course not! The Dark Chocolate S’mores Cake was the cherry on top. It was rich, indulgent, and totally worth saving room for.

They also offer the full “KYU Experience,” which is a guided, set-menu option per

person, perfect for those who want to explore the full range of their curated flavors. This experience, and anything on the menu really, are what makes KYU so special. The flavors, the presentation, and the service all come together in a way that’s unforgettable.

If you want a meal that feels like an experience from start to finish, KYU is where you want to be. Trust me, you’ll leave already planning your next visit. MV

THE BEST OF MYVEGAS: CHILL BAR AND GRILL

Introducing Chill Bar and Grill: a restaurant that boasts a complete menu inspired by dishes from southern Italy with a Mediterranean twist.

They are best known for taking wellknown favorites and elevating them to a level well beyond the norm. This includes items such as their fresh specialty pizzas prepared to perfection in their brick pizza oven. There’s the 10”, 12” Neopolitana, 14” and 12” gluten-free options. Choices include Pizza Margarita (Passata tomato sauce, fresh mozzarella, basil leaf, and olive oil), Pizza Prosciutto (Passata tomato sauce, fresh mozzarella, burrata, prosciutto, and basil leaf), Pizza Pepperoni, Pizza Fig & Balsamic (Fresh ricotta cheese, caramelized onion, figs, and gorgonzola), Pizza Supreme (Mozzarella, sausage, pepperoni, mushroom, onion, bell pepper and black olives), Pizza Diavoletta (Passata tomato sauce, fresh mozzarella, hot capicola ham, basil leaf, and chili oil), Pizza Meat Lovers (Passata tomato sauce, mozzarella, pepperoni, sausage,

ground beef, ham, and pancetta), Pizza Con Acciughe (Passata tomato sauce, mozzarella, anchovies, and oregano), Pizza Formaggio Burrata (Passata tomato sauce, fresh mozzarella, basil leaf, and burrata), Cheese Pizza, and Pizza Al Pesto (Fresh made pesto sauce & fresh mozzarella cheese).

The restaurant serves Italian and Mediterranean dishes, as well as American favorites such as their six-piece bone-in chicken buffalo wings. Chill Bar and Grill also offers specialty menu items, which include house-cut French fries tossed in truffle garlic sauce with sautéed mushrooms and a parmesan crisp. Those are only a couple of the appetizers that they offer!

Other menu items include gourmet pastas (Paccheri Boscaiola, Gnocchi Al Gorgonzola with chicken or shrimp, Fettuccine Alfredo with chicken or shrimp, and Penne Alla Bolognese), sandwiches (Bison Burger, Panino Al Pollo Sandwich, and Prosciutto Sandwich), salads (Greco Salad, gluten-free Popeye Spinach Salad, Caprese and Caesar salad), seafood (Shrimp skewers, Fried Shrimp, Salmon, and Calamari served with aioli sauce), and gluten-free, vegan, and vegetarian options as well.

Entrees include Parmigiana Di Pollo (Breaded

chicken breast topped with marinara sauce, mozzarella cheese, and Parmigiano cheese, served with spaghetti), Salmon Alla Griglia (Fresh Atlantic grilled salmon served with sauteed vegetables), Chicken Kabob (Mediterranean Chicken Kabob served with rice, grilled zucchini & tomatoes), Mediterranean Strudel (Assortment of grilled veggies wrapped in puff pastry), and Lamb Chops (Marinated grilled chops served with veggies and rice). Chill Bar and Grill also offers desserts such as Cannoli, Gluten Free Flourless Chocolate Cake, and Crema Catalana: a traditional Spanish crème brulé.

Conceived by the great culinary mind of Giancarlo Bomparola, owner/operator of the popular Las Vegas Italian restaurant Siena Italian Authentic Trattoria, Chill Bar and Grill provides a casual-dress atmosphere where diners can enjoy a relaxing ambience, hence the name. When asked what inspired Giancarlo to open Chill Bar and Grill, his response was simple; he was looking to embark on a new culinary “adventure.” Located at 7905 W. Sahara Avenue, Suite 102-103, Chill Bar and Grill also hosts live performances every Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday. They also host a happy hour menu twice a day, from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM with a reverse happy hour starting at 9:00 PM and lasting until closing. THE TRUE TASTE OF THE SOUTH

Since a young age, John Holland, Executive Chef and Owner of Rollin Smoke Barbeque, knew that cooking was in his bones. Growing up, John would ask his mother to prepare the Thanksgiving desserts, and even grilled for his friends and co-workers after long days in the Arkansas oil fields.

At only 24 years old, John decided to pursue his culinary dream and move to Las Vegas to attend La Cordon Bleu.

John soon realized that not a single BBQ restaurant around the valley resembled the true Southern roots of home. He decided it was time to take his mobile smoker/grill to the side of Russell Road, in a hardware store parking lot with his dad and brother to put the true taste of the South in everyone’s mouth. The first day, the team sold 3 sandwiches. The second day, they sold 7 and continued to grow their business, deciding to open their first brick and mortar location in 2012. Shortly after, Rick Harrison and his father became regulars at the restaurant, eventually offering them a partnership in the plaza next to Gold and Silver Pawn Shop.

John had no idea that his once small mobile smoker/grill would grow to this extent, and continuously expand. Winning numerous BBQ competitions, receiving national recognition in the top 16 Hottest New Barbeque restaurants, recognition as Top 20 best Barbeque restaurants in the country, being featured on channels like Food Network, Discovery Channel, and many more are just a few of Rollin Smoke’s accomplishments over the years.

The moment you walk through the door of any of their three Las Vegas locations, you are met with genuine Southern hospitality. The meats are smoked with Hickory wood and prepared with the “low and slow” process, and you can taste the love and effort put into the mouthwatering meats at Rollin Smoke. Some of the most famous dishes at the restaurant include the Fried Catfish, Beef Ribs, and Smoked Meatloaf. The diverse menu and homemade sauces cover a range of palates, especially the BBQ craving ones.

They also enjoy participating in Pigs for Kids charity cook-off and the Best Dam BBQ in Boulder City. They donate to a plethora of organizations throughout the city and continue to look for more opportunities to give back.

In the next ten years, there are exciting plans of expansion to bring their BBQ and southern love all over the United States. They also offer sauces and rubs on the website, as well as catering services for 10 to 10,000 people. Stay tuned as they continue to keep Rollin’! MV

THE DEEP PLANE FACELIFT: Game-changer or Fad?

What is a deep plane lower facelift, and is it better than a traditional SMAS lower facelift?

Deep plane facelifts (DPFLs) have existed in the surgical textbooks for over 30 years.

DPFLs are also known as a “composite lifts”, where both the skin and muscle are lifted as one unit versus those two layers being lifted individually as it is in a SMAS (Superficial Musculoaponeurotic System) Lift.

DPFLs have just recently been revisited by the surgical community as a possible better solution to the traditional, SMAS lower face and neck lift.  Historically, studies from decades ago that compared the two methods demonstrated that the results were nearly equivalent in most cases, with potentially slightly more improvement in the lower cheeks and nasolabial folds (a.k.a. Smile Lines) with a deep plane facelift approach. It is note worthy that many studies recognized that the patient’s anatomy and the experience of the surgeon was more important than the technique in regards to the overall result.

It is critical to appreciate that DPFLs ONLY applies to the lower face/jawline and portions of the midface (cheeks and nasolabial folds), and NOT to the neck itself nor the tissue under the jawbone. The vast majority of plastic surgeons would agree on fact that there is no such procedure named a “deep plane necklift”.

Why the resurgence in Deep Plane Facelifting?

As is commonplace in today’s world of the internet and social media, DPFLs have gained some popularity driven largely by a small group of physicians in major metropolitan markets, such as NYC and Southern California. It is inappropriate to call it a “resurgence” or “revival”, as the technique was never popular nor commonly performed at any point in time since described over 30 years ago in the textbooks.

In my opinion, the primary reason for the current hype is mainly financial. Plastic surgeons will charge at least double, and often triple, the amount they charge for a time-tested SMAS lower facelift with necklift (>$100,000 in some markets!). This simple fact makes it unaffordable for most patients, therefore making it exclusively accessible to the ultra-wealthy. Whether the results of a DPFL are even better is debatable.

What are the risks to the DPFL?

Since DPFLs are more aggressive and invasive in nature, the risk of permanent motor nerve injury is unequivocally higher than in a safer SMAS Lift.  This type of nerve injury can present as either temporary, or possibly permanent, malfunction of one’s facial muscles (similar to as one would appear after a cerebral stroke).

Also notable is that since the deeper tissues of the face are disrupted, the recovery from a DPFL can be up to 50% more than a SMAS Lift.

Additionally, since the muscle and skin are moved together in a DPFL, there is less ability to tailor a result for the patient. In contrast, a SMAS Lift provides targeted treatment to both muscle and skin and individually, allowing for better customization.

Finally, the majority (>95%) of DPFLs in the U.S. are performed under general anesthesia since they usually take 4-6 hours to complete. Obviously general anesthesia presents with it’s own set of risks (pulmonary and cardiovascular issues, allergic reactions, and post-operative nausea and vomiting etc.).

Why can Deep Plane Facelifting be seen as “Irresponsible”?

Currently, my personal fear is that the majority of plastic surgeons in our country have never performed a DPFL, or at best have not performed one the last decade or more.

Unfortunately many patients are now going to be potentially exposed to surgeons performing riskier surgeries all for the sake of chasing “what’s hot” on social media, while charging the patient 2-3x the amount of money. I believe that most of my colleagues probably would provide a better result by just improving and mastering their personal current technique.

In my opinion, the higher complication rate, longer recovery, and less accessibility (from an economic standpoint) is a recipe for a procedure that will not gain popularity or become the new standard of facelifting.

As a final intriguing point, it is quite ironic that the incision placement on the face and around the ears for a DPFL and SMAS Lift are exactly the same. Thus the patient, nor any surgeon for that matter, cannot tell which technique was exactly performed “under the hood” during surgery.

So will Deep Plane Facelifting stand the test of time?

Classic SMAS Lifts have been the “gold standard” of lower facelifting for multiple decades. They are effective, safe, reasonably affordable, and have a undeniable track record. I’m quite confident that in just a few years DPFLs will join the long and evergrowing list of “once hot” facial procedures that enjoyed a few moments of fame and hype, but fail the test of time. For reference, a few relevant surgical fads in the past decade include buccal fat removal, thread lifting, surgical “lip lifting”, and under eye filler for hollows to name a few.

In the interim, patients will need to decide if they wish to pay 2 to 3 times more for procedure that may yield slightly better results, has a much higher risk profile with longer recovery, and that most patients cannot afford in the first place.

AN ALLIANCE for GREATNESS

Did you know that according to some national polls, The State of Nevada is ranked 50th in the nation when it comes to mental health services?

Dr. Faisal Suba and Dr. Daniel Park, two of the founding members of Alliance Mental Health Specialists, envisioned changing this statistic when they were in their Psychiatric Residency program through the University of Nevada-School of Medicine. They often talked about opening a small practice together when they graduated, but neither of them ever imagined that their practice would grow to the size that it is today.

“We saw a need and wanted to be part of the solution,” said Dr. Suba. “We would constantly hear how long it was taking for patients to get in to see a psychiatrist. We hoped by opening a large practice, we would be

able to help some of these patients find consistent and compassionate care.”  Founded in 2016, Alliance Mental Health Specialists has grown from 3 psychiatrists in Las Vegas, to 29 Psychiatric providers with an office in Las Vegas and Reno. Their highly qualified team consists of Psychiatrists, Nurse Practitioners, and Physician Assistants.

In addition to outpatient care, Alliance Mental Health Specialists also provide services at inpatient psychiatric hospitals, Skilled Nursing Facilities, as well as psychiatric consult services at medical hospitals in Nevada. Dr. Park says, “By having a presence at various different levels of care, we are able to provide continuity of care.”

Making Your Bottom A Top Priority

Let’s talk about a health topic that’s often overlooked but shouldn’t be— your backside.

Colonoscopies may get all the hype, but they’re only half the story when it comes to rear-end wellness. Anal cancer, a rising yet preventable disease, is rarely discussed, yet early detection can make all the difference. While it’s not exactly a dinner table topic, it’s time to start talking. Dr. Alireza Farabi is determined to lead the charge in Las Vegas to increase awareness, screenings, and—most importantly—save lives. Or really… Save Your Butt!

Dr. Alireza Farabi is a double board-certified Infectious Disease and Internal Medicine specialist with decades of experience in detecting and treating diseases. He has dedicated his career to ensuring that patients feel informed, comfortable, and proactive about their health. His work focuses on early detection through high-resolution anoscopy (HRA), a specialized technique designed to identify abnormal cells before they develop into cancer.

Nevada has never had a dedicated screening program for anal dysplasia—until now. Dr. Farabi and his team are bringing these essential services to the city, filling a critical

gap in preventive care. “We’re making these screenings accessible, stigma-free, and normal. We’re saving lives,” he says.

Who Should Get Their Rear in Gear?

While it’s easy to assume anal cancer is rare, the truth is that cases have been steadily increasing, and it’s linked to something most will have in their lifetime: HPV. Dr. Farabi adds, “HPV is the most common STI, and many can have it and may not know it.” That’s right, the same virus responsible for cervical cancer also causes anal dysplasia, the precursor to anal cancer.

Risk factors include a history of HPV, those with abnormal cervical pap smear results, HIV, a weakened immune system, and even just getting older. While some groups have a higher risk, this is a health concern for everyone. The good news? It’s preventable and treatable when caught early.

“Most people think if they get a colonoscopy, they’re in the clear,” Dr. Farabi says. “But it does not detect precancerous cells.” That’s why Dr. Farabi and his team offer specialized anal Pap smears and high-resolution anoscopy screenings, as well as treatment. Just like a cervical Pap test, these procedures check for abnormal cell changes before they become dangerous.

Women are screened annually for HPV during their cervical Pap smears, but why isn’t the same routine screening applied to anal health? The fact is- it should be, and it

will be if Dr. Farabi has anything to do with it. His mission is to change the conversation and make it a standard practice for everyone—particularly those that are high risk. Dr. Farabi stresses that screenings, lifestyle awareness, and HPV vaccinations can make all the difference.

COMPASSION INTO ACTION

Dr. Truvella Reese is proud to call Las Vegas home, and even prouder to serve it. Born and raised in the heart of the city, she’s spent her life turning compassion into action.

“Growing up in the inner city of Las Vegas, I always knew I wanted to be a doctor,” she says. “When I discovered dentistry as a profession, everything seemed to fall into place. ”

Dr. Reese was part of the inaugural class at UNLV School of Dental Medicine in 2002.

After years of working in private offices, she opened Generations Dental in 2012, committed to providing honest, ethical, and affordable family care. In 2016, she expanded with the purchase of Crowne Dental, growing a practice built on trust and transparency.

Her philosophy was shaped by a moment early in adulthood, when she was quoted thousands of dollars in car repairs during a routine oil change. “I remember sitting there feeling confused, powerless, and unsure if I was being taken advantage of,” she recalls. “That feeling stuck with me- I never want anyone to feel that way in my dental chair.”

Her patients have taken notice. Over the years, she’s been voted Best of Las Vegas several times for her cosmetic work and compassionate care. She adds, “We treat every patient like family, with transparency, respect, and heart.”

But Dr. Reese’s heart for service extends far beyond dentistry. In 2021, she launched her nonprofit called Reasons to Smile, offering restorative dental care to survivors of human trafficking, domestic violence, and underserved veterans.

“Las Vegas raised me… so to now serve the same community that shaped me, especially its most vulnerable, is deeply personal.” Her contributions have earned her numerous honors, including Nevada Mother of the Year, Nevada Trailblazer, Humanitarian of the Year, and Mrs. Nevada-America 2024. “As a mom, community servant, and a woman of faith, I never chased titles. I chased impact … For every woman who juggles family, purpose, and dreams quietly behind the scenes.”

Today, Dr. Reese serves as Chief Clinical Officer for Las Vegas Dental Management, where she’s helping lead the future of dental care with a focus on innovation, wellness, and clinical excellence. And she’s not done yet.

Since 2004, the Christian Business Network in Las Vegas has existed for one main purpose – to provide a resource for Christians in the church and marketplace to live their highest biblical integrity, both personally and professionally.

Our luncheons are held the second Thursday of each month (except July and August) from 11:45am-1pm at the beautiful Ahern Hotel at 300 W. Sahara Avenue (just west of the Las Vegas Strip). We showcase a different speaker each month who speaks to topics of current interest to our business and church community, and it’s a great setting to meet with fellow believers in the workforce to collaborate, exchange ideas and network – all under the banner of Christ.

EXCITING NEW CHAPTERS IN FILM

After months of focused work, creative exploration, and long days on set, I’m excited to announce that I’ve just wrapped production on two feature films, each offering a completely different cinematic experience.

The first is Asylum, where I take on one of the lead roles. This project dives into psychological tension, unexpected twists, and the kind of emotional depth that makes a story linger long after the credits roll. It challenged me in all the right ways, and I can’t wait for audiences to feel the intensity and mystery woven throughout the film.

I’m also appearing in Ouija Massacre, a wickedly entertaining thriller filled with

supernatural chaos and high-energy scares. It’s bold, eerie, and wildly fun—perfect for horror fans who love a good adrenaline rush.

Alongside these completed films, I’m stepping into a new creative chapter. I’m currently writing and producing my own feature film, scheduled for production next year. This project marks a meaningful expansion in my career—an opportunity to craft a story from the ground up and shape every aspect of its creative vision.

There’s also an important date on the horizon: the Nevada Women’s Film Festival, now set for March 19–22. This festival is an incredible celebration of women in film. You truly don’t want to miss it.

Hello Loren,

I have a 2011 Honda Odyssey. It has a 6-cylinder engine. I have failed smog multiple times for Codes P0301-P0306 and P0300. I have had numerous repairs performed at a cost of over $3000. A new computer, spark plugs, and coils. All 6 injectors. The timing components were replaced a few months ago. I have 120k on it. My vehicle runs great! It just will not pass smog. Compression is over 180 psi on all 6 cylinders. I change my oil every 4 months with full synthetic. Do you have any suggestions?

I am not sure of what types of shops you are entrusting. These Honda V-6 engines are valve lash sensitive. When the engine is cold, the valve train contracts. The valves actually sink into the valve seats. The misfires are not harsh enough to feel, but the vehicle’s computer is sophisticated enough to detect them. At 120k, a valve adjustment should have been suggested multiple times if your repair shop is familiar with Honda engines. I hope this helps.
