Spring is here and the Gardens are greening up and growing more beautiful by the day! Bulbs are popping up and blooming like botanical fireworks in celebration of our 25th anniversary this spring. We’ve got so many things to celebrate, and we hope you’ll join us.
Thanks to a most generous $400,000 gift from The Meinders Foundation, we’re creating a new terrace area in the Meinders Garden, especially designed for outdoor weddings and to serve as a leafy, shady site for all to enjoy. The Meinders Garden is devoted to showcasing native plants that thrive in Oklahoma. This gift also helps us add thousands of new native plants to this garden, further enhancing it as a living classroom for visitors. Thanks also to a generous $25,000 grant from the Kirkpatrick Family Foundation for plant labels, visitors will soon be able to learn the names of all of the Meinders Garden plants as well as all of our plantings indoors and out.
You will see the number 25 a lot this year. The Gardens officially opened 25 years ago, on March 25, 1988. On March 25, 2013, we honored our special ‘roots’ –the people who made the Myriad Botanical Gardens possible many years ago. Imagine the vision, planning, funds and perseverance that was necessary to make such a major project possible. We thank and honor all of those early founders. Their vision and leadership made today’s Myriad Gardens possible.

To celebrate our big birthday year, we have planned a number of “25” events and happenings for all to enjoy. We planted 25,000 bulbs for a springtacular effect. We are offering free Crystal Bridge admission on the 25th of each month; we’re planning a new Spring Garden Festival and Plant Sale event, a new Family Concert Series presented by Devon Energy and more. On June 20, we will inaugurate an annual benefit event entitled Splendor in the Gardens. It will be a grand, outdoor dinner on our Great Lawn with an in-season menu created by top local chefs. Chaired by Linda Haneborg and Sen. David Holt, and a creative, energetic committee, all proceeds will benefit our annual fund campaign.
Don’t miss our new Spring Garden Festival May 9-12 – featuring an outdoor plant sale, garden talks and workshops and a springtime Pop Up Market. Our new, whimsical Okla-gnoma exhibit features garden gnomes, a hobbit house and charming gnome displays, games and crafts in our children’s garden from May 9-19. I guess you could call our spring events a “Gnome and Garden show!”

It’s a gnome fact: just like April showers bring May flowers, warmer weather attracts certain pointy-hatted creatures to the Gardens. Join us as we get to gnome our diminutive inhabitants as they descend on the Children’s Garden for ten days of Lilliputian fun. Crafts, games, stories, snacks and an interactive gnome habitat await you and your munchkins. Photo opportunities abound and kids can paint their own gnomes to take to their homes!

Celebrating the Meinders Garden Grant
The Myriad Gardens Foundation is thrilled and delighted to report a major grant award of $400,000 from Herman and LaDonna Meinders/Meinders Foundation.
Funds will be used to complete the planting plan for the Meinders Garden, which occupies the northeast corner of the Myriad Botanical Gardens, and serves as an entrance to the Gardens from the intersection of Sheridan and Robinson Avenues. The Meinders Garden constitutes approximately 20% of the 17-acre Myriad Gardens.
Exciting design enhancements planned for the Meinders Garden include a new terrace area for weddings and other events as well as a lovely, shady site for all to enjoy. Features include a rustic, wooden trellis and a charming stone fountain.
Funds will also be used to increase the Garden’s endowment fund at the Oklahoma City Community Foundation specifically for the long-term maintenance and sustainability of this unique garden of native plant species that thrive in Oklahoma.
Junior League Awards “Bringing Books to Life” Grant and Celebrates 85 Years
The Junior League of Oklahoma City awarded a two-year grant totaling $34,000 to The Myriad Gardens Foundation for the “Bringing Books to Life” program. For children ages Pre-K through middle school, books will come alive through various art projects, hands-on demonstrations and interactive programming including storytelling, science and cooking demonstrations.
In addition, funds will be used to create “book nooks” in the children’s garden for children to discover and have a quiet place to read.
“Our gift to this innovative and interactive two-year project at The Myriad Gardens is a perfect way to commemorate
this significant anniversary with a distinctive and lasting community project as we wrap up our focus area of ‘Changing Lives Through Literacy’,” said Junior League President Cristi Reiger.
The JLOC has a history of commemorating significant anniversaries with distinctive projects. Past signature projects have included the Jungle Gym at the OKC Zoo and The Zone at the Children’s Hospital. The 85th Anniversary grants to the YWCA and The Myriad Gardens will add to this legacy.
A fantastical storytellers chair, made possible by a generous gift from Gail and Bill Beals, will add volumes to the storytelling program at the Gardens!

Hypertufa is a man-made version of a natural rock known as tufa, a very porous rock that was once used for stone watering troughs. Going Vertical
MBG is Growing Up!

Our plant collection is going vertical this summer as we begin planting our newlyinstalled wire trellis system. The intent of the collection is two-fold: camouflaging concrete and displaying different vining plants so home gardeners can see and learn about vines that grow well in Oklahoma.
Most often, trellises are used to shade and/or screen something, and we’re using them as screens. Specifically, we are trying make our urban garden just a little greener and soften the look of concrete by growing plants over the concrete surfaces located around the water stage, elevator shaft, and the pedestrian bridge that spans the lake.

It features a lovely centerpiece fountain, gorgeous pavers and a selection of flowering and foliage plants that grow well in Oklahoma. What a transformation. Just think of what they could do for you. “Vertical’ gardening is a big horticultural trend now especially in urban areas where you cannot always grow out – but can usually grow up.
Trellises also provide a gardener with the opportunity to incorporate new and different plants into the mix. We intend to take full advantage of this by growing several different types of vines, adding to our already-existing plant collection.
There is a multitude of vines to select from these days, which makes choosing our vines exciting and fun. We will use perennial and annual vines, evergreen and deciduous vines, and of course flowering vines. Some may be slower growing, while some we know will be more aggressive, but all of this will be advantageous, educational, and beautiful for our garden visitors.
Some of the vines will include: Argyria nervosa (Wooly Morning Glory); Vigna Caracalla (Corkscrew Vine); Clematis; Akebia quinata (Chocolate Vine); Gelsemium sempervirens (Carolina Jessamine); and Bignonia capreolata (Crossvine)
Visitors will be able to come see the new vine collection display and can use it to help them determine which plants provide the look they want in their own spaces. Homeowners wrestling with how to hide an unsightly view throughout the year may be draw to one plant, while condo dwellers looking for a tropical, flowering vine to add temporary interest a patio may identify another.
We are excited to be going vertical and look forward to the visual interest this will provide to the garden and the value it will provide to our visitors.

In 2012, photographer Carl Shortt kicked off what has become the Myriad Botanical Gardens’ Fine Art Series by staging a show of his photographs for all to enjoy. In January, colorful abstract painter Joy Richardson became the second, and we are pleased to announce that the third installment is a collaboration by two uniquely brilliant artists, Bert Seabourn and J. Don Cook.
Cook is a wildly prolific artist. He’s a painter, photographer, sculptor and writer. For years, he roamed the world as a photojournalist, earning three Pulitzer Prize nominations, and three years ago, he compiled the fruits of that labor into an award-winning book, Shooting From The Hip. Other artistic enterprises have included creating large-scale steel sculptures with the “spot” use of stone or glass incorporated; creating paintings on aluminum panels and writing – he has completed a novel and is working toward publishing it.
A painter and printmaker, Seabourn has experimented extensively with graphic media, gouache, watercolor, acrylics and oils for over fifty years. He continues to exhibit throughout the United States and has shown his art in England, Germany, France, Russia, Taiwan, Singapore, Chile, Bolivia, Peru, Colombia and Ecuador. His work is in public and private collections worldwide. He says of his work, “My name has long been associated with being a Native American painter and/or a painter of Indians. I think of myself as an American expressionist who sometimes paints Indians and sometimes paints non-Indians and sometimes paints landscapes and sometimes paints flowers. I think of an expressionist as a painter who expresses himself with the honest use of paint...meaning it drips, it smears, it splatters, it runs...it does all these things.”
In June, look for an indoor–outdoor art and sculpture exhibit featuring the artists of Red Earth. Opening reception is scheduled for Friday, June 7.
All art is available for purchase and a portion of the proceeds benefits the Gardens.
