POLK COUNTY FAIR BOARD IMPLEMENTS ONLINE REGISTRATION FOR FAIR 2018 Polk County Fair directions for Online Entry Systems There are six steps to the online entry system. We have included step-by-step directions below. For help, please call Phyllis Caldwell - 479-243-6212 or Caroline Singleton – 479-243-7248 for further assistance. Step One: Look at the Polk County Fair and Rodeo Association Facebook page, the Polk County Arkansas 4-H Facebook page or contact your 4-H Main Leader who will have the link through the 4-H Main Leader Groupme text for the link to the online entry site… sorry it was not ready when we printed these instructions. Step Two: Exhibitor Registration To begin, on the left hand side of the navigation bar, click the Register button. You should now see a screen that says: Login: Please log in as an Exhibitor or create a new account. 1. Type in your First Name and then your Last Name and choose “I am a new exhibitor” and hit continue. (Make sure that you use the ﬁrst and last name and your mailing address in case checks have to be mailed at any point) that you want on all correspondence and exhibitor tags.

2. Enter a password for this year (please write it down so you will remember it) and fill out the remaining information fields. (Asterisk fields are required.) The password will allow you to log in and see your account after you have completed the entries. You can also print a receipt of your entries so you remember what all you registered. Step Three: Entries - Please have a copy of the current Fair Book in front of you. Fair catalogs are available in paper format with The Pulse paper on Wednesday, July 25. They are available digitally on The Pulse website, the Polk County Fair and Rodeo Association Facebook page and the Polk County Arkansas 4-H Facebook page. 1. Choose a department from the catalog 2. Choose a division. 3. Choose a class and enter your item. NOTE: Check for any special instructions listed in red lettering at the top of the entry form and follow the instructions given. All livestock that you plan to show as “county bred” must be entered in the appropriate County Bred Department and Division as well. 4. Hit “add entry to cart” button. The Polk County Fair has implemented a new online fair entry program called ShoWorks. County Fair board Treasurer, Phyllis Caldwell, attended a weeklong training over the summer to learn the new online system. Carla Vaught, County 4-H agent says, “This year we prefer all livestock entries to register online. This is important so that we can make the best use of our volunteer time by cutting down on data entry. The Fair board and workers are completely made up of volunteers. Any changes that we can make to make the process smoother for them is important.” Bridgett Martin, FCS agent, also commented on the online registration, “Entries made to the Education building will be accepted in an online format OR as “in person” registration at the door. This is a very simple computer program. It requires a quick registration with general exhibitor information and a required password. Everything else is in a dropdown box format, which makes it extremely simple! We are hoping this makes the entry process a little less time consuming.” The following directions can be used to complete an online entry:

MENA LIBRARY ROBOTIC PROGRAM J uly 30th, August 1st, and August 3rd, 10 young people from Polk County attended a special robotics program at the Mena Branch of the Polk County Library. Participates were age 10 to 15. They learned about programming and had the opportunity to operate robots on Friday, August 3rd. The program instructor was Shannon Jesse. Some of the robots were programmed to follow color commands

on puzzle mats, while smart devices were used to control two other types of robots. Head Librarian Mary Renick stated the Arkansas State Library provided the robots and the training for county libraries. Renick said the Mena Library is planning to offer future robotic programs. She stated the Mena Library offered the Robotics program in addition to the summer reading program that was held in June.

failed along the way. Indeed, American history came alive in Mr. Carmack's classroom. However, he considered teaching to be much more than just about American History. It was also about serving as a mentor and role model. He valued each one of his students, and we knew it. He exemplified character and integrity which he sought to instill into us - that we would grow into the men and women, the informed and responsible citizens that America would need in order to continue her journey as that successful experiment in ordered liberty which our Founders set our path on. Not surprisingly, he was voted "Teacher of the Year" at our school more than once during his career there. In retrospect, Mr. Carmack was not only my choice for Teacher of the Year in 1973 but is also my choice for Teacher of a Lifetime in 2018. He was a special man in so many ways, and this was no less true within and among his family and friends. We witnessed his faith and resilience during the loss of his only child in her teen years. He himself passed away too young but left an enduring legacy beyond what I've been able to adequately describe here. In closing, what I can and must say is this: Thank you Mr. Carmack - for your example and inspiration and for the honor I have in being a part of your legacy, as I've joined many others (albeit in a small

way) in the important and consequential stewardship of America's history, a stewardship which we all have a stake in! Many of you could probably share a similar story from your own experiences in school. May what I've shared here help to revive such memories for you and serve as a tribute to all the great educators who enlightened and inspired us and to those who will be doing so for the generations of today and tomorrow. Our nation needs them more than ever in 2018-2019 and beyond.

COACH HARPER GIVES STATE OF BEARCATS ADDRESS AT MENA LION’S CLUB MEETING ena High School Head Football M Coach Tim Harper was last week’s speaker at the Mena Lions

Club. Coach Harper informed the Lions Club that he was excited because there is a renewed interest in football in Mena. He said the Mena Youth Football Association and the Bearcat Foundation for donating over $7,000 to the high school program for practice equipment. Harper said the Bearcats have eight starters returning from last year’s team. He said the coaches felt they would be pretty good this season and the change in conference should also help. Harper said the Bearcats are playing in the 4-4A along with Dardanelle, Dover, Elkins, Ozark, Pottsville, Subiaco Academy and Waldron. He

said the 4-4A is an old school league where they will run 140 to 150 plays per game. He stated the 7-4A conference averages between 180 to 210 plays per game. Harper said the Bearcats plan to run a hurry-up offense. He also stated he plans to switch quarterbacks during a drive depending on the down and yardage situation. The defense will line up in an oddstack set. Harper said the biggest challenge for the Bearcat defense this season is matching the physicality that they would face each week in the 4-4A conference. Harpers also reported the Bob Carver Foundation donated $200,000 to resurface the track, replace the fence and renovate the press box this summer.

CLASS ON USING ALCOHOL INKS ON TILE

The class will include: the basics of dropping ink on tile. This exercise shows how the ink reacts with the alcohol, using a brush, using a felt pad and using compressed air. This can get messy and is optional. However, a lot of people want to learn this

"Testing the Waters" will be from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 10. The Cossatot River travels all the way to the Arkansas River. The health of the river determines what life can survive there. Park interpreters will test the river water to determine how healthy it is and what type of diversity can be found there.

There will be a snorkeling exploration from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Friday. Snorkel equipment is provided. Participants must be at least 6 years old and wear appropriate clothing for swimming. Calandro reported he received bids from two local companies, one from Hot Springs and one from Little Rock. He explained the bid included the use of a crane because the unit must be placed on the roof of the building. During the financial report, Secretary-Treasurer Al Gathright reported all of the Healthy Connections were in the red, except the Montgomery County clinic. He said cash-on-hand had decreased in July but the organization still had a strong bottom line. EDDIE MARIE GENTRY Eddie Marie Gentry, age 82, passed away peacefully on Monday, July 30 th , 2018, at her home in Mt. Ida, Arkansas. She was born September 9 th , 1935, in Potter, AR, to Arthur and Edna Lee (Smith) Sharp. She attended school in Alder Springs, AR. Growing up as the oldest of 6 siblings, and being the only daughter, Marie learned responsibility and developed a strong work ethic at an early age. As a result, she was adamant that her children carry forward these same traits. As a young adult, Marie joined the Weingarten Brothers Grocery Co., where she ultimately retired after a long career in management. In 1980, Marie married her late husband Foye L. Gentry in Houston, TX. Together they fulﬁlled their life long dreams of owning a farm in upstate New York, and later retiring in Mena, AR, and raising cattle. Having never met a stranger, Marie could strike up a conversation with anyone who would listen, and the two would soon be laughing over trivial topics. And, quickly many would discover she loved to read, and had an even larger passion of collecting books. It didn’t matter the topic, but cooking, gardening, medicine and real estate tended to be her top picks. She was also a smart shopper, always looking for a deal. She found great pleasure in the hunt. Marie was survived by her daughters Colleen Strother and husband Eddie of Mena, Arkansas Sheri Bonds and husband Johnny of Mt. Ida, Arkansas. Sons Daniel Irwin of Splendora, Texas Jerry Ritchel of Altamont, Illinois; Mark Ritchel and wife Laurie of Beaumont, Texas; Dan Ritchel and husband Derrick of Houston, Texas. Marie was preceded in death by her parents, and her husbands Bobby Corder, Daniel C. Ritchel Sr., and Foye Gentry, as well as her brothers Jack Sharp, Arthur Lee Sharp, and Ronnie Sharp, and her daughter Rhonda Kay Ritchel. She will be dearly missed by her children, as well by her brothers Wayne & wife Betty Sharp, and Johnny Sharp, and her loving grandchildren, Stacy, Tim, Kristopher, JR, Kayla, Deseray, Hayley, Danielle-Abigail, and Alexis. CAREY PAT CARMACK Mr. Carey Pat Carmack age 65, of Oden, Arkansas passed away Saturday, August 4, 2018 in Oden. Carey Pat was born November 1, 1952 in Oden, Arkansas to the late Monroe Carmack and the late Dorothy Aylor Carmack. Carey Pat worked for the United States Forest Service. Carey Pat loved prospecting for crystals anywhere he could find them. Carey Pat also enjoyed fishing (mainly catfishing) and loved his dog Lady. Carey Pat loved music and enjoyed playing both the guitar and piano. Throwing horseshoes and spending quality time with his family were among his favorites. Carey Pat dearly loved his entire family. They were the most important thing in his life. Carey Pat was a loving father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother and a friend to all and will be greatly missed. JETTIE FAULKNER JOHNSON Jettie “Arlene” Faulkner Johnson, age 90 from Mena, Arkansas, passed away Wednesday, August

1, 2018 while residing at the Peachtree Assisted Living Home in Mena, Arkansas. Arlene was born on May 12, 1928 in Hartley, Arkansas. Her parents were Daniel George Washington Faulkner and Martha Viola McCauley Faulkner Evans. Stepfather Homer Evans. She had one brother William Lewis Faulkner. Arlene was married to Homer Lee “Johnny” Johnson, they have one son John Arlan Johnson. Arlene was preceded in death by her father Daniel George Washington Faulkner, her mother Martha Viola McCauley Faulkner, step father Homer Evans, husband Homer Lee Johnson, brother William “Lewis” Faulkner, sister-in-law Mary Lee Burnett Faulkner, niece Doris Faulkner Abbott, niece Nodene Faulkner Goodgame and special friend O. Clyde Bales. She is survived by her son John Arlan Johnson of Houma, Louisiana and his wife Robin Johnson. Grandson Scott Hastings and wife Danielle Harvell Hastings and great granddaughter Kaytlin Hastings of Jackson, Tennessee. Arlene enjoyed taking part in the history class at Rich Mountain Community College and was involved with the local Hospice Support Group. She regularly helped with planning her annual class reunion for many years. Arlene especially loved to over-indulge her many nieces and nephews and enjoyed any opportunity to spend time with family and friends. She also enjoyed traveling. She and her husband lived in Sri Lanka for several years assisting with establishing a Levi’s Manufacturing Plant in that country where she also learned to love the beautiful locale, orchids growing on trees in the courtyard, and geckos on the ceilings. She fondly recalled the kind hearts of the local people and was deeply saddened by the civil war that occurred soon after their departure. She enjoyed reading-especially history, music, going to concerts, impromptu picnics, staying up late to play games, holidays and all family occasions. She frequently made “popcorn” visits to family and friends by popping in and popping out just to let them know how much she loved them. Love never fails.

Lee Olin Cauthron, age 75, of Mena, died Saturday, August 4, 2018 at the Mena Regional Health System. He was born on Tuesday, March 9, 1943 to Olin and Lela Beatrice Jordan Cauthron in Hatton, Arkansas. Lee was a man of God, always willing to share his faith and reach the lost and point them to Christ. Lee was a Baptist by faith and loved the Lord. During Lee’s working years he was a manager for Safeway Grocery Stores, Wal-Mart and Dollar General Stores over 30 plus years. Some of his hobbies were farming and raising his Mastiff and Yorkies. Lee will be missed by all who knew him. He is preceded in death by his parents and his twin brother, James Cauthron. Lee is survived by his son and daughter in law, Jeffrey and Dawn Cauthron of Augusta, Georgia; his daughter and son in law, Sherri and Dr. Bill McCourtney of Mena; two sisters, Margaret Qayyum of Glendale Heights, Illinois and Susan Morrison of Chicago, Illinois; nine grandchildren, Tabithia Cauthron of Grovetown, Georgia, Steven Cauthron of Camp Humphreys, South Korea; Logan and Emily McCourtney of Success, Arkansas, Blake McCourtney of Jonesboro, Arkansas, Dalton McCourtney, Nicholas McCourtney, Harlei McCourtney, Kolbi McCourtney and Raegan McCourtney all of Mena; three great grandchildren, Cadence Cauthron, Riley and Zoey McCourtney; several nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends. Graveside services will be Wednesday, August 8, 2018 at 10:00 A.M. at the Daniels Cemetery in Wickes with Brother Logan McCourtney ofﬁciating. GEARING UP FOR THE 43RD ANNUAL QUEEN WILHELMINA ROD RUN AUGUST 24TH-26TH

For 43 years, the Queen Wilhelmina Rod Run has attracted car enthusiasts from all over the country. Started in 1976, by the late Mark Campbell, owner of Street and Performance, Inc., the event continues to grow in popularity and attendance. Join us as more than 200 hot rods and street rods rumble through downtown Mena, the Queen Wilhelmina State Park and discover the majesty and panoramic views of the Talimena National Scenic Byway as you travel along the winding roads of the beautiful Ouachita Mountains, one of the highest mountain ranges between the Appalachians and the Rockies. This three day event includes a parade, poker run, street dance, three chances to show and shine, and awards in 24 categories. New to the Rod Run this year is the addition of the Rat Rod category, supporting the creation of a pedal car. The pedal car will be raffled and the Rats for Autism Charity will be the beneficiaries of the proceeds from the raffle. Additionally, the CASA of the Ouachita’s organization will receive a donation from the funds raised through the poker run hosted in conjunction with the Queen Wilhelmina State Park. A drive through photo booth and professional photographer will be available to preserve these incredible memories. A Kidz Corner offers fun and entertainment for children of all ages. MENA GOLF TEAM STARTS SEASON 2-0 248. Nashville finished in second T season 2-0 with victories at ofplace with a team score of 267. And, he Mena Golf team started the 2018

Hot Springs Village and DeGray State Park. On July 31th, Coach Ray Hunter and the Mena Bearcats won by 20 plus strokes to start the season at Hot Springs Village. On August 2nd, the Bearcats defeated Arkadelphia, Hope, Malvern and Nashville on the course at Lake DeGray State Park with a team score

Arkadelphia finished third with a team score of 298. Daniel Davis was the medalist for the meet with a score of 74. Austin Johnston finished the meet with a score of 81. Camden Brodersen shot a 93. Aaron Thornsberry shot a 102. Jack Hunter shot a 114. And, Brendon Catlett shot a 133.

Area residents are invited to fill the Blessing Box with items that would help those in need. Volunteers may leave everything from non-perishable food items to toiletries. Pastor Daniel Egger explained the donated essentials help fulfill a shortterm basic need for those who don’t always have access to them. Egger stated it’s not the church that is putting items in the Blessing Box, but the people of the community. He said since the Blessing Box was placed on the church’s property, it has been filled and emptied several times.

Winning schools receive ﬁve shade trees, mulch, wa-

tering supplies, and planting guidelines after participating in program training. “The S.T.O.P. program combines hands-on, outdoor experiences with classroom curriculum about the importance of trees and the care they require,” says Urban Forestry Partnership Coordinator, Krista Quinn. “We hope this program not only improves the health of Arkansas students, but also leaves a lasting impression about the value of forests and how to be good stewards of our natural resources.” Schools are invited to submit S.T.O.P. applications annually. To qualify, participating schools must lack shade, agree to use Arkansas Forestry Commission curriculum to emphasize the importance of trees and forestry in Arkansas, hold a tree planting ceremony with students, and agree to long-term maintenance of the planted shade trees. Schultz stated a CAB is a board that would partner with organizations that are already in the community and serving veterans, such as the American Legion, Disabled Veterans and VFW. He said they would partner together to provide events that the Veterans Affairs ofﬁce could participate in and provide services to area veterans. Schultz said the Community Action Board would be made up of people from Polk County who are concerned about the needs of veterans. He said they would meet once a month and they would make decisions about ways to help the veterans. Schultz said the VA would provide support and resources to the community. Currently, there are seven Community Action Boards in Arkansas. Pine Bluff is working to re-establish their CAB. Schultz said he plans to host an introductory meeting to help identify people who are willing to serve on the Polk County Community Action Board. He said there would be a CAB member summit meeting in September in Little Rock. Schultz said his goal is to spark interest in the community to recognize veterans and help bring resources to Polk County that the veterans need.

exchange would increase an average of less than 5 percent next year under requests submitted by the insurance companies according to the state Insurance Department. Arkansas Blue Cross and Blue Shield requested an average increase of 4.4 percent for its plans covering 186,510 people, according to the department. St. Louis-based Centene Corp., which sells plans under the name Ambetter Arkansas and has plans covering 85,373 people, requested an increase of 4.6 percent. Little Rock-based QualChoice Health Insurance requested an increase of 1.5 percent for a group of plans covering 16,013 people and

1.06 percent for another set of plans covering 14,996 people. Insurance Commissioner Allen Kerr will rule on the requests by Aug. 23. If approved, the increases would take effect Jan. 1. "This round of initial requests places Arkansas among the lowest in the country and shows that the health insurance market in Arkansas remains stable," Kerr said in a news release. Created under the 2010 Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, the insurance exchange offers plans to consumers who buy coverage on their own rather than through employers, and allows them to apply for subsidies to help pay for it. Under the so-called private option, Arkansas also buys coverage in such plans for people who became eligible for Medicaid under that program's

Joseph Cunningham, 32, of Mena was charged with disorderly conduct and breaking or entering. The arrest followed a follow-up investigation from information received regarding a vehicle stolen in Montgomery County. JULY 30, 2018 Kristine Nichole Wootton, 34, of Mena was charged with prostitution and assault after officers investigated information received from multiple individuals concerning activities in which Ms. Wootton was involved. Two 16-year-old Mena youths were charged with theft of property (shoplifting) after officers responded to a call at a local retail store. The case was referred to juvenile authorities.

JULY 31, 2018 A Mena woman reported the attempted breakin of a storage building on her property. Case is under investigation. Report was made of a purse being stolen from a local fast food restaurant. Case is currently being investigated. AUGUST 1, 2018 A local man reported that his dog had been attacked and injured by a neighbor’s dog. Case is being investigated. AUGUST 2, 2018 A Mena woman reported that someone had vandalized her vehicle by “keying” it. No charges have been filed at this time. Nick Kesterson, 19, of Cove was arrested on two outstanding warrants for failure to pay fines and court costs. Randi Hall, 23, of Mena was arrested on a body attachment warrant from Polk County. AUGUST 3, 2018 Daniel P. Schmidt, 53, of Mena was charged with criminal trespass, theft of property, resisting

arrest, and fleeing. The arrest followed a call to a local retail store. Caleb John Chaquica, 36, of Mena was charged with possession of a controlled substance. Ashley Gail Smith, 26, Jim Justin Pearce, 40, both of Mena were charged with theft of property (shoplifting) after officers responded to a call from employees at a local retail store. A former Mena resident reported that someone had gotten a telephone account in her name without her consent. Case is pending. David Sinyard, 42, of Mena was charged with criminal trespass and introducing prohibited articles. The arrest followed a call to a local business. Michael Wayne Creel, 31, of Mena was arrested on an outstanding warrant. Gerald Todd Davis, 42, of Mena was charged with DWI and refusal to submit to chemical testing. The arrest followed a traffic stop. Derrick P. Lester, 43, of Mena was arrested on a warrant.

AUGUST 4, 2018 Report was made of a Mena resident being harassed and threatened by an acquaintance. Case is pending location and interview of suspect. Report was made of a missing teenage girl. She was later located and returned to her parents’ custody.

To help build awareness, the Arkansas Department of Education, Arkansas Association of Pupil Transportation and Arkansas School Bus Mechanics Association are teaming up to launch the sixth annual Flashing Red. Kids Ahead. school bus safety campaign. What has been a three-week campaign in the past has been expanded this year to the entire month of

August. “As the 2018-2019 school year begins, about 350,000 youngsters around Arkansas will be boarding one of about 7,000 school buses every day,” Gov. Asa Hutchinson said. “Once again, the Department of Education is rolling out its bus-safety campaign. Flashing Red. Kids Ahead. rolls easily off the tongue and is an easy-to-remember slogan. When you see the ﬂashing red lights on a stopped school bus, that means children are crossing the street, and state law requires
