Fire Engulfs Pinemore Shavings Facility (MENA) Fire crews were on the scene of a large fire at Pinemoore Shavings on Highway 375 West. Upon arrival fire crews found multiple structures fully engulfed. Polk County Sheriff Scott and Mena Police shut down Hwy 375 in both directions and side streets to the road. Large flames could be seen for quite a distance. Sheriff Sawyer said that there were no known injuries. Mena Fire Department, Shady Grove, Potter and Intermountain Regional Airport crews assisted at the scene. According to Mena Fire Chief Steve Egger, no cause has been determined on how the fire had started. The investigation is ongoing to determine that cause and the dollar loss to the business.

Road and Sidewalk Projects Gain Approval from City Council (MENA) Members of Mena City Council reviewed bids received on the 2019 sidewalk improvement program. Of the three bids received, one was disqualified for lack of required information needed. The other two bids came in a t $45,542, submitted by Tri-County Services and $46,227.10, submitted by Glenaire Construction. Council decided to go with the low bid submitted by Tri-County

Services for the project that will see new sidewalks in various portions of the city. Council is awaiting approval of a much larger grant to replace sidewalks on Janssen Avenue between 4th Street and Cherry Streets in the city. Council also approved the additional expenditure of $4273.68 in regards to the resurfacing and repair work done to Fairgrounds Road. The road work was a cost-

share project with Polk County. City leaders also approved amending the 2019 budget. The basis of the amending of the budget is a typical procedure, shifting monies that were initially anticipated to another line item. The overall budget anount doesn’t change with the re-allocation of monies.

(MENA) With the start of the new school year last week, a new law that affects drivers in school zones has created some confusion. Act 738 approved this year by the Arkansas State Legislature does not allow for the use of cell phones within school zones for any reasons, with one exception… if the vehicle is in park and not moving. A school zone is located near a school building within 300 feet of a school building, that has children present. Mena City Chief of Police Tommy Stueart talked with KENA Radio about the new law.
