Use a teaching poster to show how personal pronouns are used in Spanish.
Say: In Spanish, pronouns replace nouns in a sentence so that nouns are not repeated.
These pronouns can be singular or plural. The third person singular (he/she/it) and all plural persons also have masculine and feminine genders. In Spanish, pronouns replace nouns in a sentence so that nouns are not repeated. With your partner, use a singular and a plural personal pronoun in complete sentences about the text you read.

Build Literacy
Instruction
Learning Build Literacy LearningTM is a structured literacy program built around a curated collection of student texts organized into topic sets.

The units support fluency, comprehension, writing, and word building. Students will be able to read the books, understand what they read, build word knowledge, and write about the topic.
Paired Texts
Authentic texts that share the same topic; one is narrative and the other informational.
Introduce the paired texts
Say: These two books are about flamingos Flamingos is an informational text and Ruby in the Middle is a narrative text. The informational text is a report on what flamingos look like and what they do. The narrative text is a story about a flamingo called Ruby who never wants to be on the edge of the f lock
Flamingos
Phonological Awareness
Knowledge of syllables and how letters map to sounds underpins reading and writing development.
Phonics
Students review known letter–sound correspondences and continue to learn more challenging phonic code.
Content Knowledge
The more students know about a topic, the easier it is to make meaning when reading a text about that topic. Understanding the structure of a text also helps students read and comprehend it.
Say: Today we are reading this informational book called Flamingos. Before we do, we will practice our decoding skills and learn some new words to help us read the book.
Decoding and word recognition
Phonological awareness
Syllables
Say: The word flamingo has three syllables fla–min–go Now say flamingo without the first two syllables. Repeat with the word amazing Phoneme manipulation
Have students repeat a word after you. Ask them to change a sound and then say the new word. word changesound newword beak /k/ to /t/ beat lake /a–/ to /–/ like
★ Phonics
Review
Review the letters dge making the /j/ sound. Write the word edge on the whiteboard. Have students say the sounds they hear in edge: /e/ /j/. Say: The letters dge make the /j/ sound in the word edge List other words with this letter–sound correspondence. For example, bridge, hedge, and ledge. Have students write a word with the letters dge making the /j/ sound.
Teach
Teach words in the book with letter–sound correspondences that students may not have learned. build: the letters ui making the /i/ sound young: the letters ou making the /u/ sound
★ High-utility words
Review high-utility words such as because, could, and want using sound–letter charts.
★ Vocabulary
Teach the meaning of words that might be new to students in the context of how they are used in the text.
scoop (p. 8) To lift something up and out of something, like soup out of a saucepan
Example I used the spoon to scoop out a big serving of ice cream.
sift (p. 9) To separate things from a group by letting the smaller things fall out
Example I had to sift the flour so that there were no lumps in the cake mixture.
Text summary
Show the front cover of Flamingos. Say: Flamingos reports on what flamingos look like, what they eat, and how they raise their young.
Content knowledge
Build students’ content knowledge.
Say: A flamingo is a type of bird. Flamingos live on lakes. They get their food from the lake and build nests for their chicks in the mud on the edge of the lake. Flamingos have long legs, long necks, big beaks, and pink feathers.
Ask: What would you like to find out about flamingos?
Encourage students to share their ideas.
Text structure
Explain the text structure of the book.
Say: This book is an information report. The information is organized into three chapters.
Point out other features of the book such as the contents page, chapter headings and subheadings, introduction and conclusion, and index. Explain the purpose of each.

Build Vocabulary
A broad, rich vocabulary is strongly linked to reading comprehension. Each Text Study Unit includes key words to explicitly teach to students.
Fluency
Support is given to students as they read the texts.
Writing
Teachers are supported as they explicitly teach students how to write using content they have just read.
Fluency
Say: I am going to read aloud fluently. I will pause when I come to a period. Read aloud the introduction.
Have students read Chapter 1 independently. Support students where necessary. Check students’ understanding before they read the remainder of the book.
Students could then record themselves reading a chapter from the book using an audio-recording device. Have them listen back to the recording and think about how fluent and smooth their reading sounds. Say: As you read, pause when you come to a period.
Comprehension
Talk about the text
Use the following questions to check students’ understanding of what they have read.
What sort of water does a flamingo drink? How many eggs does a flamingo lay at a time? (Literal)
Why is it good for flamingos to live in a group? (Inferential)
How would the author have found out the information needed to write this book? (Critical)
Summarize
Say: I am going to think about what I now know about flamingos. I know what they look like. They have long legs, long necks, webbed feet, and a beak like a scoop.
Record these facts on the whiteboard.
Ask: What other facts did we learn by reading this report?
Discuss and record students’ ideas to summarize the main facts in the book.
Students can talk with a partner about what they learned about flamingos and then complete the Graphic organizer: Main facts.
See page 106 for the Graphic organizer: Main facts.
Writing
Writing a simple sentence
Write a simple sentence on the whiteboard. Flamingos drink fresh water.
Say: A sentence needs a subject and a predicate. The subject tells us what or who the sentence is about. The predicate tells us what the thing or person does.
Circle the word Flamingos in the sentence. Say: This sentence is about flamingos. The word Flamingos is the subject of the sentence.
Underline the words drink fresh water. Say: The words drinkfreshwater tell us what happens. They are the predicate. Write another simple sentence on the whiteboard. Flamingos fly with their large, strong wings.
Have students talk with a partner about what is the subject and predicate. Students share their ideas. Discuss and think aloud as you circle the subject (Flamingos) and underline the predicate (fly with their large, strong wings).
Have students write a sentence using the pattern of the modeled sentences: subject–predicate. For example, Flamingos scoop food from the water. Flamingos walk in the mud. Flamingos lay one egg. Students can share their sentences in small groups.
Word building
Word ladder
Have students create a word ladder by writing a word, then changing one letter in the word to create a new word. Provide clues for students to make each new word.
Say: Write the word nest. Change one letter in nest to make a word that means something you do when you’re tired. Students write the word rest
Ask students to change one letter in this word to create a new word. Say: Change one letter in rest to make a word that means nothing else is better. Students write the word best
Say: Change one letter in best to make a word that means a set of questions to find out a person’s knowledge. Students write the word test
Comprehension
For reading comprehension to occur, students must be able to decode the words in the text and they must be able to understand what they are reading about.
Word Building
Encourage students to read and write new words and learn how spelling rules, making compound words, and adding suffixes or prefixes change the meaning of words.
High-Utility Words
High-utility words are useful for students to know for reading and writing, yet students are not able to decode them because they have irregular spellings. These words need to be explicitly taught.

Stage OneStage
Each lesson in the Stage One Units provides instruction on:
• Oral language development and listening comprehension
• Building a rich vocabulary
• Phonological awareness: identifying and manipulating syllables and phonemes with spoken words
• Phonics: letter-sound relationships and word building
• Writing: forming lowercase and uppercase letters and words
• High-utility words
• Consolidated learning activities where students can practice new knowledge and skills
In Stage One—with the focus on introducing the alphabet—the decodable books are read at the end of each module.
• Module One’s nine letters and nine high-utility words are featured in the first set of books.
• Module Two’s eighteen letters and nineteen high-utility words are featured in the second set of books.
• The full alphabet with accompanying high-utility words are covered in Module Three’s decodable books.
Grades PreK–1
OneStage Two
In Stage Two, the basic structure of the lessons continues. Attention turns to:
• Double letters
• Adjacent consonants
• Long vowels
• Reading longer multisyllabic and compound words
• Morphology
In Stage Two, the Modules Four and Five decodable books can be read at the end of each Unit. Each book contains words with the letter-sound correspondence the students have just learned.
Paired informational and narrative texts are introduced in Module Four.
“When I learned that [Okapi’s] Decodable Readers were going to be available, I couldn’t wait to view them. Students respond to the knowledge building that these books supply. The quality of the literature and informational texts disguise the fact that these are decodable books.”

Paired Texts and Perspectives
“Learners will love the selection of short, authentic texts: posters, photographs, vox pops, interviews, arguments, personal recounts, reports, and primary source documents. And, teachers will love the resulting bursts of language, deep thinking, and powerful persuasive writing.“
—LindaHoyt,SeriesConsultant
Leveled texts partner with Perspectives collections to build and extend students’ understanding of timely concepts.
Issue: Disappearing Rainforests
Paired Texts Lesson Plan: Sequence

Perspectives Lesson Plan: Sequence
• Inquiry
• Independent Partner Work
• Thinking and Talking Circles
• Reading Closely
• Writing a Persuasive Argument
Through the teaching and learning model embedded in the lesson plans, students build a metacognitive understanding of their own learning process.
Perspectives texts develop English Learners’ oral language, critical thinking, writing skills, and ability to express opinions and ideas.
Everything you love about Flying Start to LiteracyTM …
Beginning with the Fluent Plus stage, we continue our award-winning formula of pairing a narrative text with an informational text, both connected by the same big idea.
Informational texts present the big ideas around a concept. They go beyond readers’ personal experiences and include a range of features including primary sources that support the text.
Narrative texts reflect the big ideas through their characters and plots. They feature plots with subplots, non-sequential treatment of time, and a range of literary devices.
Lesson Plans for the pair encourage higher-level thinking and provide opportunities for students to write in response to both the text and to their collaborative conversations.
…plus Perspectives—short, point of view texts exploring the issues raised by the big ideas in the paired texts.
Extend students’ thinking with additional views of the issues introduced in the paired texts.
Perspectives contain short texts in a magazinestyle format and include posters, arguments, discussions, letters, and visual images.
Perspectives Lesson Plans engage and support students in critical discussions, and in recognizing different points of view. Performance task cards provide opportunities to demonstrate comprehension.

WorldWise: Content-based Learning™
Fill the Knowledge Gap with Explicit Links to NGSS and C3 Standards
Program Overview
WorldWise: Content-based Learning™ is a high-interest informational literacy program that encourages inquiry and questioning while extending knowledge in science, social studies, and a range of STEM topics. Your students will excel as their knowledge of the world increases with compelling texts that build on essential concepts throughout the six stages of the program.
WorldWise: Content-based LearningTM features:
• Content to engage readers and build rich background knowledge
• Seamless flow between content and literacy
• Graphic devices and striking photographs to support the content
• Research opportunities with Find Out More, Think About..., and Did You Know?
Students will develop strategies and skills needed to read informational texts across a range of text types, enhanced by writing assignments that reflect what they’re learning!
WorldWise: Content-based LearningTM is highly versatile, teaching reading strategies at the same time as teaching science and social studies concepts. Lesson plan cards for each book establish a reading focus for the text with explicit links to the NGSS and C3 Standards. With any WorldWise: Contentbased LearningTM text, students are learning standards-linked content as they learn to read.
Expand your students’ knowledge base with:
•Meaningful graphics, engaging photography, and wide-ranging text types
•Writing that reinforces content knowledge
•Titles covering a broad range of topics— field-tested with students just like them!
“While knowledge offers a foundation for understanding our world, it’s application of knowledge that transitions students from passive absorption to active inquiry and innovative thinking.”
—Maria
Nichols, Educational Consultant

Program Components
Student Books
WorldWise: Content-based Learning™ provides students with gradually increasing challenges. 174 titles linked to Grades K–5 Curriculum Standards cover natural, physical, and earth science, as well as social studies topics relevant to each grade level.
WorldWise: Content-based Learning™ texts introduce and revisit themes and concepts across the reading stages and build on initial concepts with increasing complexity.
Build rich background knowledge while exposing students to grade-appropriate syntax and key academic vocabulary.
Investigations
Lesson Plan Cards
WorldWise: Content-based Learning™ lesson plan cards support teachers in creating an active learning environment, in which all students know how to use content area reading strategies to think within and beyond any given text. Each card identifies the connection to state standards for informational texts as well as to one or more of the science or social studies standards. Educators can easily integrate these other content areas into their literacy block.
Investigations are inquiry-driven, independent project templates for students to use after reading any of the books at Grades 3-5. Investigations are available online only, with your purchase of the corresponding print products. See page 154 for complete details.

Biliteracy para todos
Biliteracy para todos™ Teaching for language connections
Biliteracy para todos™ , your essential resource for dual-language learning, is a uniquely designed, standards-based program carefully crafted for Spanish-English instruction targeting language, content, and translanguaging practices.
Thoughtfully selected text pairs in English and Spanish provide the primary means for students to explore how the two languages are alike and different.
Biliteracy para todos™ provides resources for teachers to engage bilingual learners in two related activities:
• Contrasting and analyzing the two languages of instruction
• Using their complete linguistic repertoire during whole class and small group literacy instruction.
See page 3.
Available in three complete stages (Early, Developing, and Advanced), each stage of Biliteracy para todos™ consists of two separate resources. These are available as standalone products or as one comprehensive package by stage:
• Cross Linguistic Connections (CLC) for whole or small group instruction encompasses phonology, morphology, grammar, and syntax.
• Preview-View-Review (PVR) for small group reading instruction.
TRANSLANGUAGING
Biliteracy para todos™ builds on students’ ability to translenguar to actively develop biliteracy. Translanguaging is not only about moving from one language to another, it is also about how bilingual students use language. Students use their complete language system, which is composed of features of both languages, to make sense of their world.
Biliteracy para todos™ lessons are designed for teachers working with emergent and experienced bilinguals in different educational contexts. The lessons provide intentional translanguaging opportunities, allowing bilingual learners to flexibly use their full linguistic repertoire as they become bilingual and biliterate.
BILITERACY
In Biliteracy para todos™, biliteracy is seen from the perspectives of both the biliteracy teacher and the biliterate student.
CLC and PVR lessons create opportunities for teachers to implement their biliteracy teaching in an intentionally designed way.
Students are encouraged to become biliterate as they move through the three stages of the program’s biliteracy progression. Through this process, the students use their full linguistic repertoire to gain understanding of how English and Spanish are similar and different.

Despegando hacia la lectura: FONÉTICA™
Foundational reading skills in Spanish, plus cross-linguistic connections to support biliteracy development!
Despegando hacia la lectura: FONÉTICA™ is an authentic Spanish phonics program designed to support students’ biliteracy development as they learn to read in Spanish, while making cross-linguistic connections to related English literacy skills. The program offers a systematic and explicit approach to teaching early foundational skills in Spanish using literacy components in a cohesive unit: oral language development, phonological awareness, and phonics.
Decodable sentences and decodable books for students to practice their newly learned skills are included in the program. In addition, students will have opportunities to write and practice skills using the dictation method. Teachers will find cross-linguistic connection mini lessons for letters and sounds that have a positive transfer to English at the end of each unit.

Stage OneStage
Each lesson in the Stage One Units provides instruction on:
• Oral language and vocabulary development
• Phonological awareness: identifying and manipulating syllables and phonemes with spoken words
• Phonics: blending syllables and word building
• Writing: forming lowercase and uppercase letters and words
• High-utility words
• Consolidated learning activities which include dictation
• Cross-linguistic connections
In Stage One—with the focus on introducing the alphabet—the decodable books are read at the end of each module.
• Module One’s nine letters and nine high-utility words are featured in the first set of books.
• Module Two’s seventeen letters and nine new high-utility words are featured in the second set of books.
• The full alphabet with nine additional high-utility words are covered in Module Three’s decodable books.
OneStage Two
In Stage Two, the basic structure of the lessons continues. The instructional focus is on:
• Consonants, diphthongs, and complex syllables
• Reading longer multisyllabic and compound words
• Morphology
In Stage Two, a Module Four or Five book can be read at the end of each Unit. Each book contains words with the syllables the students have just learned in that Unit. Informational texts are introduced in Module Four.
Stage ThreeProgram
Stage Three focuses on complex syllables, diphthongs, and the hiatus.
Students continue to work with complex syllables and diphthongs. The hiatus is introduced in Module Seven. These skills allow students to practice their new phonetic knowledge in the context of a sentence and in a longer, connected text.
In Stage Three, a Module Six or Seven decodable book can be read at the end of each Unit. Each book contains words with the complex syllables, diphthongs, and the hiatus the students have just learned in that Unit.
ThreeProgram Components
Teacher Resource Books
Despegando hacia la lectura: FONÉTICA™ is anchored by the Teacher Resource Books—one for each stage—that offer comprehensive, explicit, and systematic instruction in Spanish, divided into three modules for Stage One, and two modules each for Stages Two and Three. Each Module concludes with a review of the letter-sound correspondences taught in that Module. Carefully designed, with full color throughout, Teacher Resource Books are easy to follow and clear in their organization.

En el camino a la escuela, me encontré con Isabella cuando salía del edi cio de apartamentos donde vive. Es una compañera de mi clase, pero nunca nos vemos fuera de la escuela.
Deberían haber visto la cara de Isabella cuando vio a Goldie. Estaba realmente entusiasmada.
–¡No sabía que tenías un perro! ¿Cómo se llama? –me preguntó.
–Goldie. Es un labrador de pura raza. ¿Quieres acariciarlo?
–¡Me encantaría! –dijo Isabella, y se inclinó mientras dejaba con cuidado sobre el suelo una caja de plástico que llevaba.
–Es hermoso –susurró, mientras acariciaba con suavidad la cabeza de Goldie.
Le dije que cuando Goldie fuera mayor, lo llevaría a exhibiciones, y que seguro ganaría muchos premios.

ExploraMundos
ExploraMundos™ Fill the Knowledge Gap with Explicit Links to NGSS and C3 Standards
Program Overview
ExploraMundos™ is a high-interest informational literacy program that encourages inquiry and questioning while extending knowledge in science, social studies, and a range of STEM topics. Your students will excel as their knowledge of the world increases with compelling texts that build on essential concepts throughout the six stages of the program.
ExploraMundos™ is highly versatile, teaching reading strategies at the same time as teaching science and social studies concepts. Lesson plan cards for each book establish a reading focus for the text with explicit links to the NGSS and C3 Standards. With any ExploraMundos™ text, students are learning standards-linked content as they learn to read.
—Maria Nichols, Educational Consultant

Program Components
Student Books
ExploraMundos™ provides students with gradually increasing challenges. 174 titles linked to Grades K–5 Curriculum Standards cover natural, physical, and earth science, as well as social studies topics relevant to each grade level.
ExploraMundos™ texts introduce and revisit themes and concepts across the reading stages and build on initial concepts with increasing complexity.
Build rich background knowledge while exposing students to grade-appropriate syntax and key academic vocabulary.
Investigaciones
Lesson Plan Cards
ExploraMundos™ lesson plan cards support teachers in creating an active learning environment, in which all students know how to use content area reading strategies to think within and beyond any given text. Each card identifies the connection to state standards for informational texts as well as to one or more of the science or social studies standards. Educators can easily integrate these other content areas into their literacy block.
Investigaciones are inquiry-driven, independent project templates for students to use after reading any of the books at Grades 3-5. Investigaciones are available online only, with your purchase of the corresponding print products. See page 154 for complete details.

Despegando hacia la lectura: FONÉTICA™
An exciting new resource for explicit and systematic instruction in Spanish phonics
Despegando hacia la lectura: FONÉTICA™ is an authentic Spanish phonics program designed to support students’ biliteracy development as they learn to read in Spanish while making cross linguistic connections to English literacy skills. The program includes a systematic and explicit approach to teaching early foundational skills in Spanish using all the literacy components in a cohesive unit: oral language development, phonological awareness, and phonics. Decodable sentences and decodable books to practice newly learned skills provide support for every lesson. Teachers will find cross-linguistic connection mini lessons for letters and sounds that have a positive transfer to English at the end of each unit.
