LETTER FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

Dear Members of the Country Day Community,

Last year, I urged our faculty, staff, and students to pursue transformational education rather than the transactional approach that seems to prevail in so many schools today. As I told the community, education should not be a scripted bargain in which students obediently collect credits until they can redeem them for a diploma. Instead, education ought to be a challenging and joyous journey where students’ minds are expanded, character is tested, and lives are transformed.

That philosophy is more than lofty rhetoric; it is a necessity in our current moment. In an era when artificial intelligence can generate information instantly, the value of a school like ours lies in what cannot be automated: the growth of character, the spark of curiosity, and the ability to think independently. Now more than ever, the true work of Country Day is not to produce graduates who can pass tests, but leaders who can stand the test of time.

The pages that follow show how this spirit takes root not only in classrooms, but across generations of our community. You will meet families – alumni, parents, grandparents, and friends – who have chosen to invest not in transactions but in transformations. They are not paying dues to an institution; they are underwriting futures.

As we prepare to celebrate our centennial next fall, we also prepare to invest in another transformation: that of our campus. Nearly one hundred years ago, Country Day was founded “five miles farther” from the city’s furthest suburbs. This unique campus was central to the school’s ability to meet its mission of developing character in future leaders. In the century since, our alumni have borne witness to the fruits of that vision: lives of consequence, careers of distinction, and families that exemplify Virtue in Action. Now, as we ready ourselves for our second century, we must preserve that same boldness while adapting it to a dynamic and uncertain world.

That is why your support is so essential. Annual giving and capital campaigns are not simply financial tools for the school; they are the scaffolding that makes transformation possible. They allow teachers to inspire, students to take risks, programs to innovate, and the school itself to remain grounded in classic traditions while confidently responding to new challenges. Every gift of time, talent, or treasure is an act of faith in the transformative promise of Country Day.

As we prepare to celebrate our centennial milestone next year, I invite you to see yourself as part of this still-unfolding story. Country Day’s legacy belongs to all of us, and so does its future. Together, we can ensure that the school continues to transform lives for the next hundred years.

LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR OF ADVANCEMENT

Dear Country Day Families and Friends,

“Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” Helen Keller’s reflection on her educational journey and life experience has strong parallels in philanthropy and Country Day is a case in point. Every year, Country Day’s students reap the benefits of the generous support offered by hundreds of community members whose gifts – big and small – shape our students’ educational journey and substantially contribute to their day-to-day experiences.

The 2024-25 school year was another wonderful example of this philanthropy in action:

• 1,632 gifts were contributed by almost 1,000 donors.

• Gifts ranged from $5 to more than $1 million.

• C ollectively, these gifts contributed more than $4 million to the school’s operating budget, endowment, and building infrastructure.

• Two cash gifts of $1 million were received.

• A t hird $1 million gift was committed over four years.

• 758 gifts (46% of gifts received) were $100 or less.

Every donor made a difference. And the collective contributions of those who supported the school touched our students and faculty in myriad ways, including:

• More than $1.1 million raised by the Country Day Fund to support all aspects of the Country Day experience, i ncluding theater productions, field trips, extra-curricular activities, and new activity toys for our youngest learners.

• Substantial renovation (in progress) of Keeler Theater.

• L aunch of the school’s Teaching Fellows Program, the first in the region, bringing three talented new educators to Country Day for the 2025-26 school year.

• More than $160,000 invested in unrestricted and tuition scholarship endowment funds.

• Additional funding support for field trips in all middle school grades.

• Planned purchase and installation of a golf simulator.

As we look to the future, 2026 marks the 100th anniversary of Country Day’s founding. Along with numerous opportunities to celebrate this momentous birthday (see you at the Centennial Gala on September 19, 2026!), our centennial year will see the launch of our ALL IN Centennial Campaign. This campaign will realize a long-held vision to substantially reimagine our campus, invest in our community, and shape the Country Day educational experience for generations to come. These are exciting times to be a part of our community, and we look forward to sharing more details with you over the coming year.

In closing, I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to all those in our community who made it their mission to invest in the education of our students. You went above and beyond for the benefit of others, you lived our school’s motto: “Virtue in Action”, and you proved once again that “together we can do so much.”

2024-2025 financial overview

In 2024-25, revenues benefited from an increase in net tuition, driven by full capacity enrollment across most grades and supported by a year-on-year increase in tuition price. This, combined with strong fundraising and full enrollment in our summer camp programs, delivered a total of just over $21 million in net revenue.

Revenues were directly offset by expenses. The school continues to balance increased investment in salaries and benefits with tight cost control. Inflationary pressure across all cost categories has been a key feature of the last four years. All offices have been challenged to meet tightly controlled budgets and seek available efficiencies. 2024-25 saw continued investment in deferred maintenance and campus enhancements. Among investments this year were:

• M ontessori playground upgrades

• Keeler Theater enhancements

• N ew Upper School carpeting

• Leonard Family Athletic Center pool lighting

• N ew boilers for the Lower School and Early Childhood Center water heater

BUILDING A FAMILY AND A COMMUNITY AT COUNTRY DAY

When Lauren and Todd Schwartz relocated from San Francisco to Cincinnati in the fall of 2020 with three young boys, they were searching for more than just a school. They were looking for community.

“Although Todd is from California, I’d always heard great things about Country Day, growing up in the area,” says Lauren. “My sister played soccer in high school through select teams, and ultimately at the University of Cincinnati with Country Day grads, and they always had a reputation for being kind and grounded. So, when we moved back to be closer to my family, Country Day was already on our radar.”

From day one in the Pre-Primary program, Lauren says the family felt at home. “We just fell in love with the people here. It wasn’t just about academics, it was about how well our children were known, nurtured, and celebrated. The quality one-on-one time for things like

learning to read just blew us away. Another thing that other schools didn’t have like Country Day does is the nature program. Kids get to do what they should be doing – getting dirty, exploring the world around them, playing outside in the elements. It’s such an important layer of education.”

Now with children ranging from Pre-KI to second grade, the family is deeply engaged in school life. Lauren is serving as the Pre-KI parent rep for the Parents’ Association this year and, as a member of the Centennial gala committee, is already helping plan the school’s biggest party. “Volunteering is such a natural way to give back. It keeps me connected, helps me get an even better understanding about what’s going on at school, and brings me closer to other parents. I’m excited to contribute in any way I can.”

As donors, the couple sees giving as a continuation of that commitment. “We’ve chosen this school to help us raise our kids. So, to us, being involved – whether it’s time, energy, or financial support – feels like a partnership. This is our team.”

Country Day’s individualized approach to education has only deepened their connection. “It’s not one-size-fits-all. Our kids are very different, and each one is truly known by their teachers. That’s powerful,” says Lauren. “From the nature program to fourth-grade buddies, to chess tournaments where kindergartners play with seniors – it’s learning in real-world ways where differences are highlighted positively.”

Coming from the Bay Area, Lauren says it’s nice to see a school that is not waiting for other schools to take the lead and appreciates how the school stays ahead of the curve. “From cutting-edge tech partnerships in the ‘90s to bold policies today, like the cell phone guidelines, Country Day leads with thoughtfulness. They do the research, they take a stand, and it’s all about doing what’s best for the kids.”

For the couple, Country Day is more than a school. “It’s a second home. Every fall, it feels like we’re coming back to family.”

A Legacy of Gratitude

Supporting Cincinnati Country Day School has always been a priority for the family of the late Bill Culp ’65. His wife, Polly, is not a graduate, but their sons, Will and Chuck, both attended through middle school before matriculating at St. Paul’s School in Concord, New Hampshire. The family’s connection to Country Day spans decades and continues to make a lasting impact.

“Bill attended Country Day for only a few years, starting in 10th grade,” Polly explains. “But it was a meaningful time. He was new to Cincinnati, and though it was awkward to start a new school midway through high school, the friendships he made became lifelong.”

Bill often credited his strong foundation in writing and critical thinking to his time at Country Day. “He was a stickler for writing. He appreciated the emphasis on grammar, clarity, and expression.”

As parents, both Bill and Polly became active members of the school community. Bill served on the Board of Trustees and helped manage the school’s insurance needs, while Polly volunteered regularly with the Parents’ Association.

Their deep appreciation for Country Day inspired them to establish the Culp Scholarship Fund, which currently supports students. “We’re pleased we could do that,” Polly says of the scholarship. “Bill was grateful for the education he received, and we were equally grateful for what our sons experienced. We feel fortunate to help make that possible for others, too.”

For almost 100 years, the generous support of parents, grandparents, alumni, families, and friends has provided the foundation to enable Country Day to deliver on its mission. ROOTED IN LEGACY, COMMITTED TO THE FUTURE

For Mary Mitchell ’92, giving back to Cincinnati Country Day School isn’t just about tradition, it’s personal. A dedicated educator, community leader, and advocate for equity in education, Mary’s connection to Country Day runs deep, and her commitment to its future is unwavering.

Mary entered Country Day in 1983 as a third grader as the only student of color in the Lower School. “There were challenges,” she says, “but what stood out was the excellence; the way we were taught to think critically, not just learn facts. That shaped the way I learned and now how I teach. All of it created the person I am and helped me discover my why.”

After college, Mary built a career in education, eventually founding charter schools in underserved communities in Tennessee. Her model? Country Day. “We became the first one-to-one Apple school in the state because of research and inspiration from Country Day,” she explains. “The teachers at Country Day give you the education but also teach you how to use it.”

Though her career has taken her across the country, Mary has always kept Country Day close. Today, she is a member of the Alumni Council, a regular attendee at CountryDate (the school’s annual community gala), and a consistent donor on Match Day and Giving Day. She’s also the founding force behind the Black Alumni Network, helping reconnect alumni of color to the school and each other.

“The creation of the Black Alumni Network wasn’t just about reconnection; it was about healing and being seen. We’re building space for current and future students of color while honoring those who came before. That’s powerful.”

Mary views her ongoing support – whether through time, talent, or treasure – as both a responsibility and a joy. “I may not be able to write a $50,000 check, but I can give my time and experience. Students today need to see that there are alumni who’ve walked the same halls, who’ve faced the same challenges, and who’ve succeeded. That visibility matters.”

She’s also quick to note that giving back is as much about impact as it is about legacy. “Every school has its strengths and imperfections, but Country Day gives its students an incredible advantage. That’s why I give back: so that more students can access the opportunity I had.”

As the school nears its 100th anniversary, Mary reflects on her place in that legacy. “It’s humbling to be part of this history. I want to stay connected for the next hundred years to support, to celebrate, and to help ensure that equity, community, and excellence remain at the heart of Country Day.”

WALKING THE WALK GRANDPARENTS MAKING A DIFFERENCE EVERY DAY

“Be curious.” Those are the parting words Andy ’35 and Alex ’33 hear each morning, words that reflect the values of their grandparents, Richard and Madelyn Setterberg, who are fixtures at Cincinnati Country Day School. Whether leading Walking Club, reading to classes, or helping with FallFest, their presence is felt – and appreciated – by all.

“Country Day is important to us because it’s important to these kids,” Madelyn says. “We’re on campus every day; it’s fun for us and fun for the kids.”

For this family, Country Day is more than a school, it’s a community. It’s the place that welcomed them at events like Grandparents & Special Friends Day even before they became the children’s primary guardians. It’s where the seniors walk hand-in-hand with kindergarteners during Convocation, where teachers send home a special dinner after you have surgery, and where nine people recently gathered to thoughtfully determine the best advisory placement for Alex, who moved up to Middle School this year. “It’s astonishing,” Madelyn says. “The attention, the care, the personal investment in every single child. It’s relentless in the best way.”

The support they’ve received from the Country Day community has been profound, especially after Rich’s daughter’s passing. “We didn’t know what we were facing,” says Rich. “But the love and help we received? It’s something we’ll never forget. Someone was always there with a meal, a kind word, or a helping hand.”

And while they’ve redirected nearly all their volunteer efforts to the school, financial giving is also a family value. “We give the kids a $10 weekly allowance and $1 of it goes to charity for them to get used to the idea that you don’t get your entire paycheck but also to use the money for someone else’s good. For the past few years, they’ve chosen to donate to Country Day. Giving back is a habit we’re helping them build early. If everyone helps a little, no one has to do too much.”

From the everyday – like walking in rain, heat, and snow with lower schoolers – to less visible behind-the-scenes work during Faculty & Staff Appreciation Week, Madelyn and Rich show up. They do what needs to be done. “We don’t sit down and decide how we want to give our time to the school,” Rich explains. “We just assume we’re going to. We say yes whenever can.”

When asked why it matters to give back, Madelyn simply says: “Because Country Day wouldn’t be what it is without the community. The faculty and staff are remarkable, but the parents and grandparents, the volunteers, they’re the extra ingredient. We all make this school what it is.”

PARENTS OF ALUMNI LEAD THE WAY into Country Day’s Second Century

As Cincinnati Country Day School celebrates its 100th year, two longtime community members and parents of alumni – Lucy Haverland Joffe ’90 and Susan Wright – are leading the charge as Centennial Celebration co-chairs. Their work honors the past while rallying the community for the future. We sat down with Lucy and Susan to learn what motivates them and why they’re still giving back.

How did you get involved in co-chairing the centennial?

Lucy: I am happy to be part of the team that Rob [Zimmerman ’98, head of school] has assembled to work on the centennial. I have always enjoyed being involved at CCDS as an alum, past board member, parent, and now past parent. I’m looking forward to helping celebrate this significant milestone for the school and the CCDS community.

Susan: Same story! Rob took me to lunch and said the centennial would be a fabulous celebration and I would get to co-chair with a friend. I said yes because giving back has been a significant part of my life, having spent my career in fundraising. Volunteering one’s time helps build a culture of philanthropy for today and for life. Country Day teaches its students that giving their time truly makes a difference, and I wanted to help showcase that during this important milestone.

What excites you most about the centennial?

Lucy: I’m very much enjoying having the excuse to be back on campus and reconnect with some of the faculty and administration. More broadly, the centennial provides a chance to honor the larger Country Day community by reflecting on the school’s history and traditions. It is also a great

opportunity to strengthen the school’s connection with several generations of CCDS students, alums, and past parents.

Susan: I think people who return will be amazed by how far the school has come. 100 years is a big deal, and it deserves to be celebrated. It’s not just about looking back; it’s about showcasing how vibrant and strong the school is today.

Why continue giving back, even after your children have graduated?

Lucy: Country Day has played an important role in our family for over four decades. Both my husband and I graduated from Country Day, and our three kids all attended and graduated from the school. The school has played a key role in developing our critical thinking skills and how we approach the world more generally. A lot of our friends date back to our middle and high school years, and it has been truly amazing to see how some of our kids have developed close relationships with the children of our old friends from CCDS. So even though we have moved into our empty nesting years, Country Day continues to hold a place in my heart.

Susan: Because the school still matters. It shaped our kids, and it continues to shape the lives of so many others. Volunteering is also how you stay part of the community, even after the carpool years are over.

What did Country Day do for your children and families?

Lucy: As a parent, I am most grateful for the dedication of the faculty. The teachers at Country Day went above and beyond to nurture our kids both as students and as people outside the classroom. The teachers’ engaging curricula and high academic standards also prepared them well for their transitions to college and beyond.

Susan: Country Day taught my children the love and appreciation of learning. Our youth today are exposed to so much more than we had to deal with, and I firmly believe Country Day continues to prepare its students with the tools to navigate today’s complex world.

What advice would you give to other parents of alumni?

Lucy: Your relationship with Country Day doesn’t need to end at graduation. If Country Day made an impact on you or your family, now is a great time to reconnect and be part of Country Day’s next 100 years!

Susan: Reconnect and give back in whatever way makes sense for you. Of course, we hope you will join us at the centennial gala in September 2026. Get your dancing shoes on and get ready to enjoy a spectacular night under the stars at Country Day!

FROM CLASSROOM TO COMMUNITY:

A STORY OF TEACHING, PARENTING, AND INSPIRING GENEROSITY THAT SPANS DECADES

Joanna Leung-Brown has been an integral part of the Cincinnati Country Day School community for 24 years. She spent the first 14 years teaching French in the Lower School and the past 10 working with the youngest Nighthawks in Early Childhood. An excellent educator beloved by Country Day families and colleagues, Joanna is also an active Country Day parent; her daughter, Jordyn, just started her sophomore year.

Although Joanna is a Cincinnati native, she first discovered Country Day while completing her practicums for a master’s degree at Xavier University. Soon after earning her degree and receiving her teaching license, a position for a French teacher in the Lower School opened at exactly the right time.

“I was leaning toward teaching French at the high school level, but when the position opened, I interviewed and they offered me the job,” Joanna recalls. “Because this was my first teaching job, Country Day has really seen me grow up. I got married, had a child, and experienced so many major milestones while I’ve been here. I like to say, ‘They’ll have to pull me out of here kicking and screaming if they ever want to get rid of me.’”

That lifelong connection is one reason Joanna loves both working at Country Day and having her daughter attend the school.

“I love this community so much. Many of my coworkers aren’t just colleagues or my daughter’s teachers, they’re my friends. They’re often the first people I turn to when I need advice or help with something personal. It feels like we’re all part of one quirky but wonderful family.”

Joanna not only values the Country Day community and her colleagues but is also deeply impressed with the experience her daughter has had since she enrolled at 18 months old.

To ensure that Jordyn and other students continue to receive the exceptional, comprehensive education that Country Day has offered for nearly a century, Joanna understands the importance of faculty and staff members being active in their students’ lives outside of the classroom, whether it is through coaching, advising clubs, chaperoning field trips, or attending art programs. “Giving our time outside of school hours shows the students that we truly care about them.”

CountryDate 2025

CountryDate is the school’s annual community gala, with all net proceeds supporting the Country Day Fund. Held on Saturday, March 1, at Rhinegeist Brewery in Over-the-Rhine, CountryDate 2025 was a memorable evening filled with live music, dancing, Cincinnati-inspired cuisine, and great conversations among friends.

Thanks to the generosity and spirit of our community, the event raised over $140,000 toward this year’s Country Day Fund goal—an incredible achievement that directly benefits our students and programs.

CountryDate is truly a community effort. We are especially grateful to our dedicated co-chairs, Sally Hernandez ’05 and Jenna Milligan, for their leadership and the many hours they devoted to making the evening a success. Endowment + Capital

The foundation of the school’s long-term financial strength is its endowment, which is composed of 64 individual funds. Built over decades through generous cash gifts, these endowed funds are a vital source of stability and support for the school’s mission.

Most of these funds are restricted by their original donors for specific purposes, including student tuition assistance, faculty support, and the development of academic and extracurricular programs.

As of the end of the fiscal year, the school’s endowment stood at $38 million, contributing more than $1.5 million to the 2024-25 operating budget.

TEACHING FELLOWS PROGRAM

An anonymous donor made a gift of $1 million, payable over four years, to fully fund the launch and development of the CCDS Teaching Fellows Program. The first of its kind in our region, this program brings talented new teachers to campus, under the supervision and mentorship of Country Day’s director of academic affairs and existing, experienced faculty members. Our teaching fellows will contribute to all aspects of school life, including curriculum development, classroom teaching, extra-curricular activities, and athletic coaching. We are pleased to welcome our inaugural cohort of three teaching fellows for the 2025-26 school year, and we are sincerely grateful to the donor for their generosity and vision, allowing us to bring this transformative program to Country Day.
