School districts find creative ways to recognize the Class of 2020 amidst the COVID-19 pandemic By Brett Auten Having its last eight weeks turned on its head, the Class of 2020 has had to adapt and adjust. With the COVID-19 outbreak putting the kibosh on all end-of-the-year celebrations and festivities, administrators, teachers and parents all found unique ways to give the Class of 2020 a tip of the cap. Some neighborhoods have become in-
ventive. Last week, at Lake Sherwood Estates, a celebration was held to recognize 15 seniors. Though the graduates went to varying high schools, they all grew up together. Along with a car parade, there was a makeshift graduation ceremony put together on a beach. “We wanted to give the kids something to remember,” Suzanne Bennett, a Lake Sherwood Estates resident said. “For some of them, this will be their only graduation.”
In the Francis Howell School District, graduation for all of the district’s high schools has been rescheduled for July 11. Whether that’s virtual, in-person with social distancing or a blended option, is still to be decided. FHSD will follow the guidance from county health officials and the Center for Disease Control to make that determination closer to the July 11 date. ‘GRADUATES’ from cover the Class of 2020 bought yard signs for all graduates as the staff and more than 70 people delivered all of them to the 400-plus students. Also, billboards were congratulating the Class of 2020 for two weeks and an online senior awards ceremony was held. Volunteer staff members are currently writing individual notes of congratulations to Viking graduates. Francis Howell North placed signs in the yards of each of its seniors and has rented a digital billboard on Highway 364 and used it to feature a congratulatory sign designed by one of its seniors specifically for the class of 2020. The Howell North counseling department has also collaborated with the publications department to put together a three-night virtual senior awards ceremony. On May 28, Howell North will be holding a senior drive-thru parade on campus where students will have a chance to say goodbye to teachers and underclassmen. “Since we can’t honor our seniors in the ways that we usually do, we’re doing everything we can to honor them in other ways,” Francis Howell North principal Dr. Nathanael Hostetler said. Francis Howell Central partnered with its parent clubs to provide each senior a graduation sign in their yard and also rented an electronic billboard on Highways 364 and 94 to celebrate the class of 2020. Along with a celebratory distribution of graduation items to all seniors, Howell Central developed a virtual Senior Awards Night, a virtual Senior Spring Sports Night, and a senior parade through campus. In the St. Charles School District, graduation plans for July 25 for St. Charles High School, and July 26 for St. Charles West is coming along nicely. Information and specific logistics for graduation will be sent out in early June. Along with special sign in each senior’s yard, during the weeks of May 18 and May 25, each senior had their senior picture displayed on a rotating electronic billboard sign at the intersection of Highway 94 and Interstate 70. for each graduation at 8:20 p.m. for 20 minutes to show support. St. Charles High’s lights will go on Thursday, May 28, and St. Charles West’s lights will go on Sunday, May 31. Both will be at 8:20 p.m. and last for 20 minutes. Both schools are planning a parade to honor each senior class in conjunction with the stadium lights event. There will be a virtual celebration for the senior recognition award events. In the Wentzville School District, high schools Holt, Liberty and Timberland have done a mixture of recognitions. Plans are in place for graduation ceremonies at the Family Arena on July 25. Additionally, on the seniors’ last day each school held a senior sendoff parade at the school for seniors. There were video tributes for the class and the district took out a billboard for two weeks. At Orchard Farm High School the plan is to hold an in-person outdoor graduation ceremony on Saturday, July 11 at 9 a.m. They hold their ceremony on campus and will be following all social distancing recommendations of the St. Charles County Department of Public Health.

Community Voices Maintaining quality in the Francis Howell School District By Dr. Mary Hendricks-Harris I want to take this opportunity to thank our community for working together during these extraordinary times; it has been truly inspirational to see our St. Charles County residents come together to help others. Our students and hardworking teachers have done a great job of learning and teaching with this new reality. While the COVID-19 pandemic has changed Francis Howell’s short-term operations, it has not changed the district’s critical long-term facility needs. Proposition S is a no tax rate increase bond issue that would allow the district to raise funds to address pressing facility needs at all Francis Howell schools. Maintaining quality school buildings is an important part of upholding the quality of life in our community. The district needs the bond money to address critical needs such as safety and replacement of systems that are beyond their lifespan. In March, Governor Parson ordered the April 7 municipal elections moved to June 2, so Prop S will be on the ballot next week. Prop S would
not increase the current tax rate because the bonds can be paid off using our current debt service levy. Bonds are the way that taxing districts like schools, fire districts, and ambulance districts finance large capital projects. FHSD has not asked our voters to approve a bond issue in 12 years. The other four school districts in St. Charles County have all passed a bond issue in the past three years, and Francis Howell has the second-lowest school district tax rate in the county. This is an opportunity to help our students and protect the investment our community has made in our schools. However, because of this early retirement, checks will be issued to all recipients, with the only exception being those members with refunds of less than $15 or with a 60-day past-due balance—these refunds will be posted as energy bill credits to their account. Members can expect to see their refunds arriving around the first week of June. Capital credits, similar to profit margins in other businesses, represent CREC members’ ownership equity. Cuivre River Electric Cooperative (CREC) is returning over $6.7 million of capital credits to its members this year, but is doing so sooner, with the distribution of refunds beginning the first week of June. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic which has placed a hardship on some CREC members, CREC’s Board of Directors approved an earlier than usual retirement of capital credits this year. This year’s refunds, which are normally distributed in late July, include a portion of the cooperative’s 2019 and 2018 and 1997 margins – still a hybrid method of retirement but nearer to current years and members. They include 33 percent of members’ equity from 2018, 33 percent from 2019 and 33 percent of 1997. “With the continuing challenge of the coronavirus in our local communities and around the globe, we continue to look for ways to help

WSD students selected to attend American Legion Auxiliary Girls State Seventeen high school juniors from the Wentzville School District have been selected to attend the American Legion Auxiliary Girls State of Missouri. Missouri Girls State delegates are selected based on their leadership abilities, interest in government, service to others and academics. Those selected from Holt High School include Olivia Harmann, Ruth Ann King, Annalise Le, Chloe Sample, Chloe Sullivan, Kaitlyn Waple, and Emily Williams. Those attending from Liberty High School include Meghan Coyle, Anna Decker, Molly Morris and Sophia Whalley. Those selected from Timberland High School include Michelle Angel, Lucy Felber, Haley Matheny, Abigail McCallum, Abigail Peters and Lindsey Schmidt. The 79th session of Missouri Girls State was scheduled to be held on the campus of the University of Central Missouri (UCM) in Warrensburg June 21-27, however it has been canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The American Legion Auxiliary Girls State program was founded in 1940 at William Woods College in Fulton, Missouri. The program is designed to changes lives

Fourteen high school juniors from the Wentzville School District have been selected to attend the American Legion Boys State of Missouri. The American Legion Boys State of Missouri is an eight-day, hands-on experience in the operation and fundamentals of government, and draws together the best and brightest high school juniors to help lead them down the path in individual success and leadership. Since its inception in 1938, Missouri Boys State has provided over 40,000 high school students with the privilege of attending this practical laboratory in citizenship and leadership training. Those selected to attend from Holt High School are Heath Bana, Ethan Dunsworth, Gerald Osakwe, Dylan Powers-Cody and Joshua Sample. Those selected from Liberty High School include Wyatt Haynes, Brennen Kohlman, Patrick Lynch and Bret Stuerman. Those selected from Timberland High School include Mutahir Ahmed, Sagan Borengasser, Patrick Habiger, Clayton Herbst and Patrick Kissel. The 81st session of Missouri Boys State is scheduled be held on the campus of the University of Central Missouri (UCM) June 1320. According to the Missouri Boys State website, Boys State is still scheduled as of now, but organizers are making contingency plans should that become necessary. Local sponsors include American Legion Post 323, the Wentzville Community Club, the Wentzville Rotary Club and the Timberland All-Sports Boosters Club.

I
’ve always been a peaceful, law-abiding citizen, but this plague thing has turned me into some kind of felonious deviant criminal. There are so many new rules that if you’re not paying attention you’ll be paying the price. I ventured out to my local grocer to stock up on supplies. A man was stationed at the store’s entrance. He clicked the tally counter in his hand then held up a hand and said, “Halt!” “What’s the problem?” I asked. “You’re number 101. We’re only allowing 100 people in. You’ll have to wait until someone comes out.” The sun was hot; it was stifling under my facemask. I lowered it to grab a whiff of oxygen and clear the spots before I passed out onto the concrete. “Do not remove your mask!” The guard barked. “Listen Bub, if I don’t get some fresh air I will collapse into a heap and unsocial distance all over your rude body.” Just then someone exited. I flashed the guard my worst stink eye before entering. I finished up shopping then headed to the check-out lane. The cashier was vaulted behind Plexiglas and sheathed in a mask. “Odee un ibem!” she mumbled. “Huh?” She jabbed at a sign – Only One Item Per Customer. The same previous guard showed up and took my extra package of TP. He flashed back his worst stink

eye before leaving. I then offered my recycle bags thinking the clerk would see that I loved the planet and forgive my prior indiscretion. “Code Corona!” she shouted into the loud-speaker. Mr. Guard rushed up dressed in Hazmat robes, gloves and a clear visor. He grabbed my bags with salad tongs and yanked them from my grasp then stinked up his eye another notch.
“What are you doing?!” I said snatching them back. “These are no longer accepted,” he snarked. “They’re covered with more germs than your nasty cat box.” “How do you know I have a cat?” He pointed to my giant bag of Momma’s Best Kitty kibble in my cart. “Whatever. I’m leaving and won’t return!” I snapped. The guard blocked me then pointed to the taped arrow on the floor aimed in the opposite direction. “I’m going to have to penalize you for wheeling your basket down a one-way aisle. Hand over the kibble or the TP!” So the cats will still get fed and the recycle bags will be put to good use after all. Archeological Humorist: someone who unearths absurdity and hilarity in strange and unusual places including public restrooms, the lint filter, and church meetings. The wisdom of ‘Forrest Gump’

Born and raised in South St. Louis, Steve Bryan is now based in Anaheim, California, and has been allowed access to movie and television sets to see actors and directors at work. Though his writing has taken him far from St. Louis, Steve is, at heart, still the same wide-eyed kid who spent countless hours watching classic movies at neighborhood theaters.
nstead of showing reruns of their sitcoms and shows, CBS has revived “Sunday Night at the Movies,” a weekly film series featuring such classic films as “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” Titanic” and “Mission Impossible.” The series was intended to run for five weeks, but there is a good chance the network may extend it into the summer. “Forrest Gump” received the Sunday night treatment recently. Tom Hanks earned a second Best Actor Oscar playing the title character, a man who many considered to be slow or even stupid. Still, Forrest accomplished a great deal: fighting in the Vietnam War, receiving the Medal of Honor and becoming a successful businessman. He also played collegiate football and became a member of the All-American Football team. In his own words, Mr. Gump is “not a smart man,” but he truly is selling himself short. Anyone who spends years running back and forth across the country has a talent for navigation and logistics. He keeps his running simple: sleeping, eating and taking care of other needs when he wants to do so. Throughout his journey, he never loses sight
become “a household name.” As for his integrity, Forrest’s moral compass is as straight as his back after getting rid of his braces. Before Bubba Gump Shrimp took off, he attends the Foursquare Baptist Church in Alabama for inspiration and later donates a considerable sum to the church. Even though Bubba was gone, Forrest keeps his promise to split the shrimping profits with Bubba (his mother passes out when she sees the large check from Forrest). Forrest has two great loves in his life: his mother and Jenny, a schoolmate who comes in and out of his life several times. Mrs. Gump is a great influence on her boy and, when he learns she is sick, he leaves his boat to be with her. Forrest’s love for Jenny never wavers, even when he is running or fighting in Vietnam. No matter what, he always remains true to the ones he loves even after they are gone. CBS will wrap up the first series of “Sunday Night at the Movies” with “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade” on Sunday, May 31. For more details go to www.ProspectLeague.com * Smell those hotdogs cooking A few more athletes to receive awards at Lindenwood Each sport at Lindenwood University has a conference member who selects one student-athlete from his or her respective program to be considered for the James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Award. Individual sport winners will be eligible to become their school’s overall Spalding winner, which will be announced later this month. These representatives were selected because of their sportsmanship and ethical behavior during the season. The honorees must also be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports competition setting. Regina Huesca-Barrales of the university’s women’s track and field and Bryan Bevelhimer of Lindenwood men’s lacrosse are candidates. Huesca-Barrales is a senior who participates in sprints and hurdles. In 2017, she finished an outdoor meet with a 400m hurdles with a time of 1:02.85, which is good for third all-time in program history. In the 2018-19 season, she was named to both the winter and spring MIAA Academic Honor Rolls. In 2017, she was named to the MIAA Academic Honor Roll. Bevelhimer is a senior from Zionsville, Indiana who played in all five games for the Lions in a shortened 2020 season. He caused five turnovers over his five games played. In his career, Bevelhimer has amassed four points, scooped 77 ground balls, and caused over 30 turnovers. Last season he caused a career-high 18 turnovers. Other athletes were picked and you can see those by going to www.LindenwoodLions.com * Tough choices for the winner UMSL has a few candidates for the Sportsmanship Award As mentioned in my previous article, the University of Missouri-St. Louis has picked several athletes as well. The university’s senior Derrick Freeman of the baseball team and senior Emma Thorngren of the women’s golf team have been named as candidates. Freeman was named UMSL’s male honoree for the second straight year. He graduates after five seasons with the Tritons program, having played in 146 career games. During his career, Freeman recorded 135 hits, including 25 doubles, 10 triples and 12 home runs, while scoring 112 runs and driving in 86. Thorngren, a three-time All-American, finished the year ranked seventh in NCAA Division II Golfstat Player Rankings. She posted a single-season program record 72.84 scoring average, winning three tournaments and finishing no lower than eighth in seven events with five top-five finishes. She is the program’s career scoring average leader at 75.46. The duo were two of 32 student-athletes, one male and one female from each of the league’s 16 schools, formally recognized after learning of their honors during their respective All-Conference process this past year. As mentioned, winners will be named at the end of the month. * Great accomplishments Happy Birthday today to my son Chase Baute!!!
