By Charlotte Beard Among the many things people have discovered, the year 2020 has allowed people to discover musical artists they had never heard, books they had never read, and things about the people with whom they live. Also, among those discoveries are annual events like the Pond-O-Rama hosted by the St. Louis Water Garden Society (SLWGS). SLWGS’ Pond-O-Rama is an annual water garden self-guided tour hosted by members of its society on the weekend of June 27 and 28, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Though the society has more than 200 members combined across St. Louis City/County and in Swansea and O’Fallon, Illinois there will be 30 locations showcased by its individual members. All water gardens are owned and maintained individually by SLWGS members. Ginny Mueller who handles the society’s publicity and is chairperson for the tour stated, “We have members who don’t have any water gardens; they just enjoy ponds and water gardens. (Some) of our members are commercial members; we call them our advertisers. They build ponds, waterfalls, and water features, or they have retail stores to sell our (annual tour) tickets. I would say some younger (members), middle-aged and older folks may have had a pond (in the past) or maybe they just have a little fountain somewhere in their garden. So, it is a mix of people from all walks of life.” Since 1990 SLWGS has been sharing information among its members about water gardens, water lilies, plants, fish and gardens. This year marks 20 years since it began its tours to share information with the public. For those who purchase a ticket, tours will be available in Florissant, Olivette, St. Louis

ciety’s annual project for the Jewel Box’s lily ponds at Forest Park. Any remaining funds go back to the non-profit to support other needs that may arise. “There are four lily ponds in front of the Jewel Box at Forest Park,” stated Mueller. “For a while no one was allowed into the park due to the quarantine and the virus. However, a couple of weeks ago the ponds were drained. (Forest Park also) drains them in the winter. See ‘GARDEN’ page 2
