BORDERLANDS. BORDER PARKS
are public parks located on or near international borders, often designated for conservation, recreation, and to symbolize international cooperation. The Peace Arch Park between the U.S. and Canada, dedicated in 1921, was the first such structure in the world, built on the international boundary between Canada and the United States to commemorate the lasting peace between the two countries.

2025 GMEI - Global Perspectives on Migration, Language, and Land
six miles west of the San Ysidro Port of Entry, one of the busiest border crossings in the world.
The Global Migration Education Institute (GMEI) is part of a collaboration between the University of Michigan’s International Institute, San Diego State University and the Secretaría de Educación of the State of Baja California, Mexico.
The mural “Abrazo Mutuo” by Alfredo Libre Gutiérrez dominates the wall that separates Mexico and United States at Playas de Tijuana.
The 2025 GMEI provided teachers and educators from both sides of the border a unique forum to discuss issues related to migration and education.
The piece is inspired by an Indigenous American prophecy that predicts a future of unity and balance between Western and Indigenous peoples:

B) The obelisk was renovated, reconstructed at the site, and protected with an enclosure in 1894. C) On 2009, the Department of Homeland Security constructed a secondary, parallel fence fortified with a thick wire mesh, security cameras, and sensors. CHOLETS Inspired by Andean iconography, Freddy Mamani, an Aymara architect from Bolivia has developed a unique, highly ornamented architecture that has transformed El Alto, Bolivia in a referent of modern architecture. Our students reflected on cultural expression through architecture and sketched some of designs, of their own cultural heritage.

Vuelo Libre RISK-TAKER Mariana Garduño
“My inspiration for my pieces comes from my life struggles and from my culture. My paintings address the need for Immigration reform, Farmworker rights, and the need for change in the face of social injustices. My goal as an artist is to give a voice to the unheard and shed light on issues affecting our community." Javier Salazar Rojas, known by the artist name Deported Artist, was born in Tijuana, Mexico, and raised in Oakland, California. At age 11, on a trip to Mexico to visit his family, Salazar was forced to hide from border patrol for hours but was found and deported. Days later, he successfully crossed and returned to his family in the United States. At age 24, Salazar was incarcerated in California for eleven years, during which he learned how to draw. Upon his release, he was deported to Tijuana. Salazar dives into topics such as immigration policy and ancestral migration through his colorful, thought-provoking artwork.

El Paso, Texas for example is dubbed as the largest binational metroplex in the world and as has the greatest potential of being one of the most significant and vital gateways into the United States. Though having the greatest potential economically, El Paso’s Ports of Entry have not kept pace with the rapid increase of cross border commerce. Many land ports along the Mexico border region are suffering as well. For example, in Imperial
County,

Calexico, California has been scheduled for new infrastructure over the last three fiscal years yet no changes have been made to date. Elected officials across the border region are struggling to have their voice heard. Our gateways have turned into parking lots. Potential consumers, visitors, and American citizens coming into the United States suffer as they wait to cross into our country. Aside from the long wait times, individuals stalled on the border are exposed to breathing in the excess pollution due to the overwhelming volume of vehicles entering the United States. Along with motorized crossing, pedestrian waits are inhumane to say the least.

The current state of the park reflects the strain in U.S.–Mexico relations, and a missed opportunity to work together for a better future. On the Mexico side, the Park remains alive and vibrant and open to the public. It’s a hub of creativity—art, music, dance, food, and tourism. On weekends, thousands pass by to enjoy the ocean views and beachfront life. In the United States, by contrast, the Park has been closed to the public since February 2020. Two 30-foot border walls now mar the landscape. Visitors in the United States can no longer see the historic border Monument, nor catch even a glimpse of friends and family gathering freely in Mexico.

El futuro en nuestras manos PRINCIPLED Olive Drouillard La idea central de mi collage es el cambio climático. Quiero expresar que el cambio climático es un problema real y nos afecta a todos. El cambio climático es un problema que está aquí y ahora, y es nuestra responsabilidad como generación más joven hacer una diferencia para proteger nuestro planeta. Las imágenes que utilizo en el collage tienen mucha simbología. En primer lugar, mi collage incluye imágenes notables e intensas, como una niña vestida toda de blanco.

ERIN YIM- English, Español, 한국어 (Korean) 다양한 언어를 사용하는 환경에서 자라는 것은 엄청 특별하고 신기한 경험입니다. 여러가지 언어를 사용하면 다양한 문화를 배우고 더 다양한 사람들과 소통 할 수 있다는 장점이 있습니다. 한국어는 저에게 정말 소중한 것입니다. 왜냐하면 한국어는 제 정체성의 일부이고 제가 태어나서 처음 배운 언어이기 때문입니다. 또, 저희 가족이 한국을 떠나 미국에 살때도 한국에서의 추억을 떠올릴 수 있게 해주었기 때문입니다. 이렇듯이, 언어는 우리의 본질과 문화를 지켜줍니다.

Jihyun Ko 1903년 한국인 이민자들이 하와이 호놀룰루에 처음 정착한 이후로 한국과 미국 사이에는 이민을 통한 지속적인 문화적 교류가 활발하게 이루어졌다 . 그 결과 오늘날의 미국 내 한인 공동체는 고향을 고수하는 동시에 새로운 문화를 창조하는 두 가지 기능을 수행하고 있다. 언어와 음식은 고향의 전통적 기반을 보존하는 수단으로 기능하는 반면, 한국 문화 확장을 통한 미국 지역 사회 참여는 새로운정체성을 형성하는 메커니즘으로 작용한다. 최근에 발표된 연구는 이 두 흐름이 공존하며 한인 공동체가 번성하도록 돕는 환경을 보여 준다.
