M AYO R ’S M E S S AG E Happy Independence Day! As we celebrate this great holiday, I ask that we all look beyond the barbecues, fireworks, and events. This is a day to celebrate our freedom, our history, and the love we all have for our country. Independence Day is a celebration for all Americans, regardless our age, the color of our skin, or our level of education. This is a time reflect on the momentous sacrifices made by those who fought for our freedom and honor those who continue to fight for us to keep us safe. The freedom we celebrate today wouldn’t be possible without the great leaders of the past, the leaders of the present, and the leaders of the future. Let’s continue to make where we live a better place for our children, and for our children’s children. We live in a country unlike any other. As I review our history, I am impressed at the magnitude of events that make us the free country we are today. The father of our country, George Washington said “Liberty, when it begins to take root, is a plant of rapid growth.” This still rings true today. A root is strong, supportive, and a source of life – much like liberty. Let’s celebrate freedom to its fullest! I’m proud to be an American and a West Jordan resident! Sincerely,

West Jordan Teacher Receives National Recognition Elizabeth Halloran, a teacher at Westland Elementary School, received quite the award – National History Teacher of the Year! After nearly 48 years of teaching Halloran is retiring, but not without notice. Many were in attendance, including Congressman Burgess Owens, Mayor Dirk Burton, and a dozen of her very supportive students and friends, including West Jordan Councilmember Kayleen Whitelock. Along with a certificate, Halloran was also gifted an American flag that flew over the United States Capitol. With tears in her eyes, Halloran thanked her students and encouraged them to continue to have passion for their country and the way it functions. Congratulations, Elizabeth Halloran!
Open in West Jordan – Walker Edison Walker Edison has officially opened its worldwide headquarters in West Jordan. Walker Edison was named the 15th fastest-growing company in Utah. What started as a furniture supply company, in 2006, has now become a leading partner for the biggest names in e-commerce. The 95,000-square foot location features a 20,000 square foot photo studio, two auditoriums and an employee-focused workspace.

City Welcomes Two New Fire Engines The West Jordan Fire Department in-serviced two new engines in the city with a washdown and pushback ceremony. This traditional ceremony is how fire departments across the country introduce new engines to their fleet. Firefighters spray the engines down with a hose and then physically push the engines back into a bay. Public safety is a top priority for the City of West Jordan. Chief Maxfield said it’s not only good news for this community but cities surrounding it. “It is vital that our first responders have the best training, support, and equipment to do their job of keeping the people of West Jordan safe,” said Chief Maxfield. “These new engines aren’t just beneficial for our residents and firefighters but also the surrounding cities that we assist in emergencies.”
WJPD awarded “Top Agency in Utah” recognition at UPOA K9 Trials The Utah Peace Officer Association held its K9 trials at a Utah high school. Several West Jordan K9 Police Handlers received individual recognition including agility, building searches and in competition and training. For the first time ever the WJPD was recognized with the Top Agency in Utah award. “This speaks volumes to the hard training and hours of dedication by our handlers,” said Police Chief Ken Wallentine. “I am exceedingly proud of the field work and competition results.”

New Benches at Veterans Memorial Park New benches located at the Veterans Memorial at Veterans Memorial Park are a new place to sit and reflect. Donated by a private donor, the benches are tributes to veterans who fought in the Army, Navy, and Army Air Corps.
COUNCIL CORNER Even though this was written before the Western Stampede occurred, by the time you read this, the Western Stampede will have concluded, the parade entries have returned home, and the fireworks show lit the sky. The Western Stampede festivities are a big part of living in West Jordan. As a council, we hope many of you and your families enjoyed attending and being a part of the city’s festivities. Council Member Chris McConnehey has been involved in the Western Stampede for many years and stated, “Having lived in West Jordan my whole life, the city events have always been in the center of our family’s celebration around the 4th of July. Today from my seat on the City Council I get to see how many people behind the scenes pour their heart and soul into events. We sincerely love our volunteers, community groups, sponsors and city staff that work all through the holiday to help their neighbors make lifetime memories. Thank you!” Most of May and June for the City Council has been related to the city’s budget. State law requires all city councils to adopt a balanced budget before the end of June. Once adopted, the new budget takes affect beginning in July. There has been some growth with new businesses coming into the city. The Council
has continued strong funding for economic development to encourage business to come to the city. The Council has also funded additional purchases in technology to help the city and its staff be more efficient and modern and transparent. Council Member Kayleen Whitelock noted, “The city budget is really the resident’s money and we, as a Council, take seriously our fiduciary duty in how it is allocated for the services the residents need such as Police, Fire, and Public Works.” Copies of the city budget and financial reports can be found on the city website. MUNICIPAL PRIMARY ELECTION IN WEST JORDAN The Municipal Primary election is coming up in West Jordan on August 10. You can find information on the upcoming election on the city’s website westjordan.utah.gov/election-overview. You can also see a full list of candidates at westjordan.utah.gov/2021candidates. The Municipal General Election will be held on November 2.
