M AYO R ’S M E S S AG E The month of February is full of notable holidays, from Presidents’ Day to Valentine’s Day, but one of my favorite weeks might not be listed on your calendar. February 14th through the 20th is Random Acts of Kindness Week. The week is dedicated to kindness and taking that extra conscious step to brighten someone’s day. Service seems to be on all of our minds recently. You may have seen Utah’s first lady, Abby Cox, announce her new service initiative. Show Up for Service challenges Utahns to do one million acts of service throughout 2022. These acts can be big or small. Here’s a list of some simple acts you can do to serve others this year. • Send a note to a friend • Bring a meal to someone who is ill • Become a substitute crossing guard for West Jordan • Join a local neighborhood watch program • Donate blood at the upcoming blood drive on February 14th • Shovel your neighbor’s driveway Something I’ve done over the past month is shoveling the crosswalks for the crossing guards on snowy school mornings. It’s a small act that has a huge impact, making a safe walk for our children to and from school. Doing a good deed for others is rewarding and makes you feel great, imagine what that good deed can do for others. Sincerely,

City of West Jordan and American Red Cross Hold Quarterly Blood Drives There’s a critical need for blood. Those are the first words you read on the website for the American Red Cross. On average, the Red Cross holds 16,426 blood drives each month. In recent weeks, the Red Cross had less than a one-day supply of critical blood types and has had to limit blood product distributions to hospitals. “Winter weather across the country and the recent surge of COVID-19 cases are compounding the already-dire situation facing the blood supply,” said Dr. Baia Lasky, medical director for the Red Cross. “Please, if you are eligible, make an appointment to give blood or platelets in the days and weeks ahead to ensure no patient is forced to wait for critical care. This year, the City of West Jordan will be hosting four blood drives with the American Red Cross on the following dates: • Monday, February 14, 2022 | 9 AM – 3 PM • Monday, May 9, 2022 | 9 AM – 3 PM • Monday, August 15, 2022 | 9 AM – 3 PM • Monday, November 14, 2022 | 9 AM – 3 PM All blood drives listed above will be held in Pioneer Hall – 1137 West 7800 South, by appointment only. Bitter cold weather? Bring your pets inside

WJ Fire Department Offering Safety Classes through 2022

Message from West Jordan Animal Control Officers

An emergency is never predictable, but you can prepare and educate yourself for when an emergency does happen. Throughout 2022, the West Jordan fire department is offering several classes from babysitting to CPR.

If it’s too cold for you, it’s probably too cold for your pet, so keep your animals inside. If left outdoors, pets can be susceptible to frostbite, hypothermia, become disoriented or lost. Don’t leave pets alone in a car during cold weather either. Cars can act as refrigerators that hold in the cold and cause animals to freeze to death. To help prevent cold weather dangers from affecting your pet’s health, follow this advice from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals: • Never shave your dog down to the skin in winter, as a longer coat will provide more warmth. If your dog is short-haired, consider getting him a coat, sweater with a high collar, or turtleneck with coverage from the base of the tail to the belly. • Winter walks can become downright dangerous if chemicals from ice-melting agents are licked off of bare paws. Bring a towel on long walks to clean off stinging, irritated paws. After each walk, wash and dry your pet’s feet and stomach to remove ice, salt, and chemicals – and check for cracks in paw pads or redness between the toes. • Massaging petroleum jelly or other paw protectants into paw pads before going outside can help protect from salt and chemical agents. Booties provide even more coverage. • Make sure your pet has a warm place to sleep, off the floor and away from all drafts. A cozy pet bed with a warm blanket or pillow is perfect. CPR Course The CPR course trains citizens in CPR, AED, and First Aid use. It is developed from the American Heart Association Heartsaver course. The class provides an AHA certification card that is valid for two years. • Class fee: $30 • Location: Fire Station 53 (7602 Jordan Landing Blvd.) • Register online: westjordan.utah.gov/fire Babysitting Classes The Fire Department has teamed up with Jordan Valley Medical Center to offer a babysitting preparation course that will help your child gain the confidence and knowledge they need for their first or next babysitting gig. This course covers everything from CPR/First Aid, how to engage and play with children of all ages, and how to keep yourself safe while babysitting. • Class fee: $15 • Location: Fire Station 53 (7602 Jordan Landing Blvd.) • Register online: westjordan.utah.gov/fire CERT Course The Community Emergency Response Team, or CERT, was developed by FEMA to help people develop the knowledge and skills to feel prepared for a natural disaster. This course will cover a variety of preparedness topics including home preparation, team organization, fire safety, search and rescue, and disaster medical operations. Must be 18 or older to register. • Class fee: $15 • Location: Fire Station 53 (7602 Jordan Landing Blvd.) • Register online: westjordan.utah.gov/fire Jr. Firefighter Academy The Jr. Firefighter Academy is a summer day camp where your child will get to experience what it is like to be a real firefighter. Your Jr. Firefighter will ride in a fire truck, spray the hose, climb ladders, and practice first aid alongside their heroes. This Academy is reserved for children 8-10 years old. • Class Fee: $35 • Location: Fire Station 53 (7602 Jordan Landing Blvd.) • Register online: westjordan.utah.gov/fire

City E-Waste + Shred Event All the 2022 City E-Waste and Shred Events will be located at West Jordan’s Public Works South Parking lot – 7960 S. 4000 W. Get ahead of your spring cleaning this year, participate in the city’s quarterly e-waste and shred event. Every year, the city holds four free events. Here are the dates for 2022: • February 5, 2022 | 10 AM – 12 PM • May 7, 2022 | 10 AM – 12 PM • August 6, 2022 | 10 AM – 12 PM • November 5, 2022 | 10 AM – 12 PM Residents can bring up to two ‘Bankers Boxes’ of paper for shredding and residential electronic waste. Documents will be shredded on-site. All items need to be drop-off ready. Paper needs to be loose, with large binder clips and rubber bands removed. Participants will need to bring a proof of residency or city employment (driver’s license, utility bill, or city ID badge). Some acceptable items include: • Cell phones • Computers and keyboards • Hard drives (removed from computer) • Stereos

Televisions, CRT monitors, cracked LCDs, batteries, lightbulbs, and printers are not accepted. Contact the Transjordan or Salt Lake Valley Landfill for more information on disposing these items.

COUNCIL CORNER In our first regular Council Meeting of 2022, the Council elected Council Member Kayleen Whitelock to be Council Chair by acclamation, and elected Council Member Kelvin Green to be Council Vice-chair. “I’m honored to be leading the Council this year,” said Chair Whitelock. “Something I want to initiate this year is giving ‘spotlights’ to the great things that have taken place in the City and the outstanding individuals who live within our City.” For example, several public works city employees did an excellent job at directing Covid testing traffic around City Hall during peak testing times in January. “We as a Council greatly appreciated their willingness to do this task on behalf of the City—this task isn’t directly in their job description,” said Council Member Melissa Worthen. “I hope

that everyone treats city employees, healthcare officials, first responders, teachers, and each other kindly as everyone navigates their way through this wave of the pandemic. I think we all are trying our best, and kindness can help bring our community together.” Also, as a reminder, we would love for you to join us for City Council Meetings from the comfort of your own home.
