Building Brighter Futures for SSL Youth & Families
For nearly two decades, Promise South Salt Lake has empowered young people across our city to build brighter futures. What began in 2008 as a community response to tragedy has grown into a citywide network of programs that supports our youth and their families each year. Through free afterschool programs, tutoring, mentorship, enrichment activities, and family support services, Promise provides a safe and welcoming environment where young people can learn, grow, and prepare for the future. Every day, students receive homework help, participate in art, STEM, recreation, and service learning activities, and develop the skills and confidence that carry them forward in school and in life.
Promise recently reached an important milestone with the creation of the Promise South Salt Lake Foundation, which now holds a 501(c)(3) designation. This new nonprofit status allows the program to pursue grants and philanthropic funding to expand opportunities and services for our youth and families.
“Advancing Opportunities for Adolescents” is a new, multi-year project made possible through a grant from the Wallace Foundation, a national organization focused on improving outcomes for young people. This investment will reimagine and strengthen a youthcentered system, helping Promise expand its work to better serve middle and high school students during these years. The growth and impact of Promise South Salt Lake are also part of an important conversation happening in our school community. For more than 100 years, Woodrow Wilson Elementary has been a gathering place for families, a center for learning, and a cornerstone of South Salt Lake. Named for the nation’s 28th president, who passed away shortly before the school
opened in 1925, the name has served the school for generations. Now, the Granite School District and the local school community are exploring a new name that reflects the collaborative spirit of education taking place there today.
When the Granite School District reached out for input, we were delighted they were considering Promise Elementary as the new name. The school has been connected to the Promise network since the start, helping support their youth and families.
Promise South Salt Lake was built on the notion that we–as a community–have a responsibility to our youth and that we promise to do everything we can to be there for them and offer them the same opportunities as any other student.
That promise is reflected in the diversity and strength of the families who make up the school community. The collective “promise” represents the idea that every child—no matter their background—deserves access to opportunity, encouragement, and a pathway to success.
The success of Promise is built on partnerships and collaboration between our schools, our city, and the many organizations that support this work, including Promise Partnership Utah and United Way of Salt Lake. Together, we will continue our promise to our youth and to our community!

As part of the 2026 South Salt Lake Mural Fest, youth from Woodrow Wilson Elementary collaborated with a professional muralist, Birdcap, to create this mural around a theme of 100% High School Graduation.
Growing our Open-Air Art Gallery
Mural Fest 2026 was a success! This year’s event brought 11 new murals to our city, bringing our grand total to 90. On Saturday, May 9, thousands of people came to downtown South Salt Lake to see the new works of art, listen to live music, and connect with our creative community. This influx provided a boost to our local businesses, and solidified South Salt Lake’s reputation as a cultural destination in the Salt Lake Valley.

South Salt Lake recognizes residents who go to great lengths to cultivate beautiful, waterefficient yards. Winners of the Beautiful Yard Award will receive an honorary yard sign, a $300 giftcard to Millcreek Gardens, and bragging rights that last all year long. Main Street Improvements
Main Street recently received much-needed upgrades in South Salt Lake! The thoroughfare got a micro surfacing treatment to improve longevity of the road, as well as a makeover with new bike lanes and a middle turn lane. These improvements mirror the lane configuration of Salt Lake City on the other side of 2100 South, creating a seamless continuation of bike lanes, and making our road safer for all modes of transportation.
West Temple Construction Throughout 2026
Starting in May and lasting through the end of the year, construction will take place along West Temple from approximately 3900 S to 2700 S to install a new water line. Traffic will be limited to one way northbound, and bike lanes will be closed. Please be safe by slowing down in construction zones and follow traffic control and detour signs. We will work with businesses to accommodate public access points and deliveries. See our construction page at sslc.gov/construction for details and updates on all city construction projects.
