Former House Speaker, Kevin McCarthy announced he will be retiring from office at the end of the year after 17 years. McCarthy was removed only 9 months after becoming House Speaker due in large part to a stopgap spending bill on the floor which won him democratic support but lost him republican favor. ourteen years ago, Morgan City started Hometown Christmas on the first Saturday in December. Quickly becoming a family tradition for many, families gather on Commercial Street to anxiously await the arrival of Santa Claus on the fire truck. Children then pour into the Morgan Physical Therapy building to visit with St. Nick. The gingerbread house contest brings a sweet competition to the festivities. The Festival of Trees shows the creative talents of businesses in Morgan.
After watching entertainment such as the Morgan High School Band and Orchestra, or watching the little dancers and listening to little singers, Morgan Grace Fellowship Church provides a place to warm up while eating donuts holes. Restaurants along the street welcome the masses to eat specially selected items. Once the tree is lit and music from the Little Mountain rings out across the valley, there is no doubt that Christmas has arrived in Morgan. More photos on page 3.l
City applies for grant to develop secondary access to Commercial Street By Linda Petersen MORGAN — Morgan City’s Redevelopment Agency has applied for a rural communities opportunity grant to help obtain property and build a road behind Commercial Street for secondary access and public parking. The application to the Governor's Office of Economic Opportunity asks for $600,000; the RDA would be required to come up with a 30 percent match. The Morgan City Planning Commission would act as an advisory board on the grant. At this point without funding the project is largely in the concept stage, City Manager Ty Bailey said at a Nov. 14 RDA board meeting. So far the idea is to have a one-way alley. “The grant would say we're on board with this concept,” Bailey said, “and then depending on where we end up, with or without property, it could end up being one-sided — only parking on one side, it could be a half street.” The alley would add value to the area and provide an incentive for the back parcels to be developed, he said, “because access would already be at the back of the parcels, meaning west of the original, the other side of the road from the vacant parcels.” To help promote the need for the alley, Morgan City has submitted an engineer’s concept plan (see above) of the proposed alley along with its grant application. The concept plan by JA Jones and Associates includes a concrete sidewalk, an ADA ramp, decorative concrete pavement, a fire hydrant, street signs, a new street light, and pedestrian/landscape lighting. “This strengthens it, having an engineer’s estimate,” Bailey said. “Absolutely, [with] a concept plan they can really see this is what we're trying to do.” “I think our ability to spend the money also helps,” he added referring to the RDA’s ability to provide the required matching funds for the grant. RDA board member Tony London at first expressed concern that people might not use the alley for access but seemed to be reassured when board member Eric Turner told the board

he had seen several instances where such access works well. “As I've traveled around, there's a lot of main streets where parking is in the back,” Turner said. “You park in the back, then you'll walk around and access the front so I don't have a particular problem with that. I've seen it numerous times.” “My mentality has always been to at least try for it; what’s the worst that can happen?” he said of applying for the grant. “At least now we’ve got a plan to move forward with something, because if not if we don't do something with it, [the land is] going to sit there a problem on our hands still. But if we could beautify it and make it into something that's usable, I think let's go for it.” RDA officials should hear back in January whether Morgan has been approved for the grant, Bailey said. If it does not qualify this time, the RDA will hold off on the project and try again for a grant in the future. Regardless, the city plans to acquire the property even if it does not improve it to address some boundary discrepancies there, Bailey said. l

Home explosion in Virginia
A viral video showing a shocking home explosion in Virginia is still under investigation. At the time of the explosion, local police were serving a search warrant for a James Yoo who had allegedly fired over 30 flare gun rounds from his house. While serving the warrant, the home erupted in a massive explosion. Yoo’s social media was apparently filled with conspiracy theories and anti-government rhetoric. The explosion and Yoo are currently under investigation by local police, fire, and the FBI.
Utah Couple decorates White House
Farah and Bryan Sanders of Heber City were able to use their experience in the floral business to beautify the White House this year for the holidays. Part of a large crew of 300 volunteers, the Sanders, and other volunteers placed ribbons, candles, ornaments, gingerbread, Christmas trees, and other decorations all around the building, all of which will stand until the end of the holiday season. The theme set for the volunteers this year was "Magic, Wonder, and Joy", and according to First Lady Dr. Jill Biden, was geared to both children and the young at heart.
Homicide suspect arrested in Bonneville county
According to a Saturday press release from the Bonneville County Sheriff, the county’s dispatch received a call from hunters east of Idaho Falls who had encountered a man naked in a sleeping bag near the roadway. The man was “making odd statements” and eventually identified as Jeremy Albert Best. Best was wanted by Teton County for suspicion of homicide related to the recent death of Best’s wife Kali Jean Randall in Victor, Idaho. Ten-month-old Zeke Best, Jeremy’s son, was the subject of an ongoing Amber Alert, and was discovered deceased at the scene. Albert’s vehicle was also discovered at the bottom of an embankment near the scene where he was discovered. Best was taken to the Bonneville County jail prior to his arraignment.

Morgan Community Choir presents 25th annual Christmas Concert By Verlene Johnson
M
organ Community Choir has been bringing Christmas joy to Morgan Valley for 25 years with their annual Christmas Concert. Singing songs about Christ’s birth to songs that invite Santa Claus, there is something for everyone young and old. Morgan Community Choir is under the direction of Kyle Palmer and Lanette Jensen with accompanist Aimee Ferrin. Morgan Valley Children’s Choir, under the direction of Shari Carter, joined with their young voices, first singing songs while the choir took an intermission, then joining the community choir for their final song. l

Trojans place at prestigious Millard Ironman By Liisa London Mecham
I
n a busy week, the Trojans took down Ridgeline, 51-24, in their home dual, Thursday, Nov. 30, and then they traveled to Fillmore to compete against top wrestling teams from Utah, Idaho, and Nevada in the Millard Ironman. After pool wrestling, Morgan qualified for the silver bracket and took third behind Stansbury and Delta. SLAM Nevada won the gold bracket of the tournament with Minico Idaho taking second and the host team Millard, 2023 2A State Champions, placing third. The 2023 6A runner-up Pleasant Grove placed fourth with Wasatch earning fifth, and the 2023 3A State Champions, Juab, placing sixth. Morgan wrestler Drew Korth (144) went 9-0 at the tournament pinning eight of his nine opponents, six of them in 1:00 or less. He won his ninth match by major decision, 13-0. Zak Sargent (190) garnered an 8-1 record with his only loss, 4-1, to Pleasant Grove’s Trevyn Gates, a 2023 State Champion. Sargent pinned seven of his opponents, four in under a minute and the other three in 1:24, 1:44, and 2:l2 “Drew wrestled well and went undefeated, and Zak’s only loss was to the No. 1 190-pounder in the state. They did a great job; all of the boys did. I thought Sim Wardell and Maverick Guymon both wrestled well and showed a lot of grit and improvement in the tournament as well,” Head Coach Kelly Wilson noted. “I am pleased with the progress the wrestlers are making. We are giving up a forfeit at 106, and in the later matches, Luke Woolsey and Skyler Crowther got
injured, and we were giving up three forfeits to some really good teams. It’s hard to win a dual against a tough team when you give up that many points,” Wilson explained. At 120 pounds, Ryler Jorgensen recorded a 7-2 outing with his only losses coming against Wasatch and North Sanpete. Woolsey (132) won four matches over North Sanpete, Juab, and Delta before his injury. In the 138-pound bracket, Maverick Guymon earned a 6-3 record with victories over North Sanpete, Renegade, South Sevier, Delta, and Canyon View. Sim Wardell, wrestling 150, went 5-4 while Treyson Rich (215) tallied six wins to three losses. His losses came to Stansbury, Pleasant Grove, and Canyon View. The remainder of the wrestlers on the team represented Morgan well: 113-Huntley Gale (2-5); 126-Max Holtry (2-7); Skyler Crowther (157) 3-5; Chase Allen (165) 4-5; Tagg Rich (175) 4-5; Lane Henderson (285) 4-5. 175-Joseph Belinski 157 (4-4) for Renegade. In their pool wrestling, the Trojans faced Pleasant Grove, Wasatch, Delta, North Sanpete, and South Sevier. In Round 1, Wasatch defeated Morgan 4724 while Morgan defeated North Sanpete 51-27 in Round 2. Round 3 pitted the Trojans against South Sevier, and Morgan won 57-18. In round 4 the Trojans took on Pleasant Grove, losing 35-32 in a tough match. They completed pool wrestling with a dual against Delta and fell 38-33. In the silver bracket, Morgan opened with victories over Mountain View, 3928, and Canyon View, 39-32. In Round 3, Stansbury defeated Morgan 40-34

before the Trojans finished with a 3325 victory over Renegade. Their previous dual loss to Delta in pool wrestling placed them third behind Stansbury and Delta. In the dual against Ridgeline, Morgan won nine of the matches and Ridgeline four. Of the Trojans’ nine victories, seven were pins. The other two matches were won by tech fall and major decision. Coach Wilson was pleased with his team’s outing against Ridgeline and praised his JV wrestlers as well. “They

F
or the Morgan Trojans, winning games is commonplace. But, the way the 3A champion Trojans have started this season under head coach Sterling Mack has looked a bit different. Morgan lost its first two games by 30-plus points [29-75 to Ridgeline Nov. 20 and 22-57 on Nov. 28 at Bountiful]. Then, the Trojans lost 38-51 to Sky View Nov. 30 and were looking at their first three-game losing streak since the 2020-21 season when they finished third at state. Nobody knows what this Morgan team will look like in a few months, but one thing is clear: Kaydence Wardell will lead a deep rotation of scrappy guards. On one play in the first quarter, the 5-foot-6 guard muscled her way through a halfcourt trap set by 4A Mountain Crest on Dec. 1 in the opening game of the Morgan Winter Classic and helped set the tone for

how the Trojans want to play. The combination of a suffocating full-court trap by quick guards and balanced scoring led to a heck of a fight from a Trojans offensive led by Kaydence and Keira Brewer, who each scored eight points in the 40-51 loss to Mountain Crest. The next night would see Morgan [1-4] record its first win of the season in a 58-18 win over Timpanogos, Dec. 2. On this final night of the Winter Classic, junior Eva Birkeland led the Trojans with 12 and senior Audrey Fisher 11. Flirting all night long with a triple-double, Kaydence Wardell scored all of 10 of her points in the first half to go with feistier defense from this trio of guards. Down low, Abby Titus had eight points and Leah Birkeland eight while Brewer tipped in six. In this game played in the main gym, the Trojans stormed out to a 29-9 halftime lead and never looked back. At the 2A/3A/4A Preview, the Trojans got their first victory under new head coach Scott Hunt on Saturday, Dec. 2, winning their final game of that tournament 58-46 over Richfield. Bracken Saunders led the way for Morgan [1-4] with 21 points, while Lincoln Gilson chipped in 11. Mason Williams had 10 and Kolton Asay five in the victory. Morgan will continue to play games on the road this week with games at American Heritage [Dec. 6] and at Emery on Dec. 8. l

ameron Connely grew up in Ponca City, Oklahoma. After graduating from Ponca City High School, he attended Cowley County Community College and Oklahoma Baptist University. Connely has an Associate of Science (emphasis on chemistry) and a BSE in Secondary Science Education. During his college years, he competed in track and field doing the decathlon, and eventually hopes to become a coach. Connely began his teaching career nine years ago at years at US Grant High School in Oklahoma City where he taught physical science, an entry-level chemistry, and physics course, and preap biology for five years. He is currently in his fifth year teaching Science to seventh and eighth graders at Mountain Green Middle School. “I was unsure of what career I wanted when I first entered college,” commented Connely. “After taking chemistry and acting as an aide and tutor I thought a path in education might suit me.” Connely said about teaching, “I love exploring science and sharing phenomena of the natural world with others. To
help society gain a better understanding of our world.” He moved to Salt Lake City when he started teaching at MGMS, so he could be closer to the mountains. Connely’s primary hobbies are rock climbing, mountain biking, and snowboarding. “I also enjoy reading sci-fi and fantasy, which I just completed reading “The Wheel of Time,” and cooking. “l

MGMS students join inaugural FBLA chapter By Averyella Johnson eighth grade student at MGMS
E
very other Friday an eager group of seventh and eighth graders meets for Future Business Leaders of America, at Mountain Green Middle School led by Business Teacher, Dustin Fullmer. The MGMS chapter kicked off the start of FBLA with a field trip to the Grand America Hotel in Salt Lake City on Oct. 12. The group was taken through the hotel on a tour to learn how things run behind the scenes and to learn more about hospitality and tourism. The chapter was taken through the laundry, security, and other rooms, and learned how they operate. After going through a process of application and interviewing by Mr. Fullmer, the FBLA presidency was chosen to be Brightyn Debore, President; Andrew Stocking, Vice President; Beau Miller, Secretary; Averyella Johnson, Reporter; Melia Rollins, Historian; Abigail Mindes, Treasurer. This group of students will meet to plan service, activities, and more for the chapter. Mr. Fullmer wanted to start an FBLA chapter at MGMS to give the students an opportunity that he never took advantage of when he was in school. When asked how it felt to be leading the inaugural chapter at MGMS Fullmer commented that there were a lot of nerves but also excitement, he wants the students to have fun but also learn. His hope is for the students to take advantage of the resources available and to lead them into something that is impactful to their fu-

ture; something they can carry with them to high school and eventually college. He wants FBLA to be a program everyone feels a part of and a family where they can learn from each other. When talking about experiences Fullmer stated, “Don’t be afraid to experience the unknown but embrace it and treat it as a learning and growth opportunity.” Many students are already enjoying the program and what they are learning. Emily Ferrin, a chapter member, commented “It puts learning business in a new light when I’m learning it with my friends!” “It is a great opportunity to connect with my peers and learn about business!” said Brightyn Debore, FBLA president. “I love FBLA because I get to create memories with my peers while learning.” Shared FBLA member, Aaron Behunin. Almost all of the FBLA chapter has signed up for their first competition on Dec. 8 at Syracuse Arts Academy and will compete in an array of events.l

Grinch makes visit to Morgan Elementary By Verlene Johnson

riday, Dec. 1, the Grinch made a special appearance at Morgan Elementary School. Having brinner instead of breakfast this year, guests were served cereal, muffins, fruit, and hot cocoa. A photo booth was available to capture the memories with a craft, face painting, and the “Grinch” movie to enjoy.l

Breakfast With Santa: Ovation Choir By Ethan Hoffmann
L
ast Saturday, Dec. 2, Morgan High School's Ovation Choir held a fundraiser in the MHS commons from 8-10 a.m. The money raised will go towards the choir trip to San Francisco at the end of the school year. The students were dressed as elves and served a breakfast of pancakes, sausage, eggs, peaches, and hot chocolate to donors. While their friends and family ate, the Choir performed a skit and entertained the audience with popular Christmas songs such as “Frosty The Snowman,” “Jingle Bells,” “Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer,” “Welcome Christmas, Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town,” “Here Comes Santa Claus,” “Up on the Housetop,” and “We Wish You a Merry Christmas.” The students sang in character and interacted with
the crowd. A number of the songs were done as sing-alongs and volunteers from the audience had the chance to participate in the fun. Meanwhile, there was an activity table for the younger viewers with crossword puzzles, word searches, and coloring pages. Towards the end of the presentation, Santa Claus arrived and gave all of the children a candy cane. Families were offered the opportunity to take a picture with Saint Nick in front of a festive backdrop with a Christmas tree decorated with music note ornaments. Events come and go, but the snowfall outside the windows made it quite a magical morning; one that students and visitors alike will be sure to remember. l

Drought-producing winter not expected in Northern Utah By Linda Petersen

lthough Utah’s snow water equivalent stands at 39 percent below normal for this time of year, water experts are cautiously optimistic that this will be a good snow and water year. “While we still have a good amount of water in our reservoirs, we must continue to conserve,” Joel Williams, deputy director of the Division of Water Resources, said. “The water year is off to a slow start, but it’s still early. From now until April will be pivotal in determining the overall water outlook for the state.” Utah State Parks currently puts East Canyon Reservoir at 84 percent full, 7 percent above the state average. At 41,536 acre-ft, that is about 134 percent of normal, according to snoflo.org. Since record keeping began in 1985 the lowest recorded storage was in Oct. 1992 when levels receded to 17,454.07 acre-ft. In Jun. 1993 the reservoir reached the highest levels recorded at 50,455.38 acre-ft. Utah’s reservoirs currently stand at 77 percent full statewide, which is around 20 percent higher than normal reservoir levels for this time of year. Weather experts are anticipating an El Niño pattern this year, and it is ex-
pected that will mean either an average or above-average snowfall for northern Utah. The Old Farmer's Almanac also predicts a snowy winter for the state which could help. However, its prediction of a snowy Nov. did not pan out so it remains to be seen if its forecast for heavy snow in early and late Jan., and mid-Feb. are realized. In the meantime, Utah residents are being urged to plan to conserve water next year. Now is an excellent time to maximize water efficiency by checking for leaks and upgrading old fixtures with water-efficient ones, state water officials say. “Last year, we saw record-breaking snow totals,” Williams said. “I hope we have another record snow year, but at the same time it’s crucial that we plan for all possibilities.” To encourage water conservation among Utahns, the Department of Natural Resources continues to promote initiatives such as the Agricultural Optimization Program for farmers which is at The program offers grants to help Utah farmers improve and protect surface and groundwater quality by reducing the overwatering of crops. obert Hyrum Welch was born in 1867 here in Morgan, Utah. In 1906, he purchased the furniture and undertaking business from Walter Stevens. At first, he ran his undertaking business out of the first floor of the Morgan Hotel on Commercial Street. He told his nephew Dick Fry, "I am going to sell furniture and do a lot of other things. I am going to qualify as a Mortician. I am going to be the Undertaker. I am going to have a hearse and we are going to put on some style up there when we have funerals. "He purchased a hearse from Larkin Mortuary in Ogden, similar to the one here, and opened his undertaking enterprise. He started business on the ground floor of the Morgan Hotel on Commercial Street. Later, he moved to a new building on 125 North. On top of a furniture and mortuary business, he also sold cars and ran a twenty-five-acre farm. He was so successful in his endeavors that his nephew Dick said, "Every doggone thing he touched worked." l

Q: Is “SEAL Team” officially over? What’s David Boreanaz doing now? A: Actually it’s not officially over yet, but it will be soon. After a few false scares, it seems that “SEAL Team” is actually canceled this time, ending with Season 7 next year. That season went into production this month, so the thing that star David Boreanaz (previously of “Bones”
fame) is doing now is more “SEAL Team.” I really feel for you and your fellow fans of “SEAL Team” — CBS has put you through so much. First, CBS said it wasn’t going to renew “SEAL Team” after Season 4. Then it said it would keep it going, but exclusively on their streaming service, Paramount+. Then it said it would air Season 5 on CBS after all, but only the first four episodes. But now, with the strikes interrupting the production of new content, CBS has decided to broadcast the whole fifth season. (There was even talk of a feature-length movie at one point, but that idea has since been dropped.) All this is to say that, as you suggest, the question of whether “SEAL Team” is “over” is more complicated than it sounds.

The hit drama “This Is Us” is a hard act to follow for any performer, but Mandy Moore is setting out on that path. The actress-singer earned wide acclaim for her portrayal of Rebecca Pearson at various ages in the NBC drama, and she’s returning in her first major project since that show ended. Peacock debuts the second season of the podcast-inspired anthology “Dr. Death” on Thursday, Dec. 21, telling a new story as Moore plays a reporter who becomes captivated by a surgeon (Edgar Ramirez) she’s investigating about his apparent miracle procedures. A related plot involves doctors in Europe who grapple with big questions about the surgeon. Jennifer Morrison (“Once Upon a Time”) directed the first four of the eight episodes. While “This Is Us” called major attention to her acting during its 2016-22 run, Moore has been in that part of show business for some time. Initially known for her music career, she also used her voice to transition into movies by speaking the words of a bear cub in “Dr. Dolittle 2” (2001). He specializes in skin cancer detection and removal, rashes, acne, warts and molluscum, as well as several other skin conditions. Dr. Mitton has specific interests in complex dermatological conditions and dermoscopy (the use of a light-based tool for classifying skin lesions and certain rashes). He prioritizes staying up to date on recent research, best medical practices and surgical techniques, and enjoys applying them into his practice.
Dr. Heaton prides himself in serving all patient populations and treating all areas of dermatology from children through retirement age. Dr. Heaton performs skin cancer diagnosis and treatment, MOHS surgery, mole exam and removal, acne, warts, cyst removal, spider vein treatment, CO2 laser resurfacing, microneedling and many other skin and cosmetic related procedures. Dr. Heaton received his undergraduate degree in International Relations with a minor in Asian Studies from Brigham Young University (BYU). He earned his medical degree from Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine (AZCOM) in Glendale, AZ. And completed both his internship and medical residency in Tampa, Florida.
Dr. Mitton received his undergraduate degree in biology at the University of Utah and graduated with his medical degree from Rocky Vista University in Parker, CO. He completed his intern year of residency at LewisGale Hospital Montgomery in Blacksburg, VA and his dermatology residency at Lehigh Valley Health Network in Allentown, PA. His residency provided many opportunities for specialized training including treating potentially life-threatening skin conditions at one of the state’s burn units, training with a nationally-renowned pediatric dermatologist, and countless exposures to rare and difficult-to-treat cases at conferences on a nearweekly basis through Lehigh Valley and the University of Pennsylvania.
In his spare time, Dr. Heaton enjoys snowboarding, mountain biking, vacations to Bear Lake, movies, grilling and spending time with his wife and three children at home in Bountiful.
In his free time, Dr. Mitton enjoys spending time with his wife and two kids, being outdoors, biking, board games, and especially making weekend breakfasts with specialty pancakes.

The Nutcracker takes Clara on a fantastic journey, which ends at the Sugar Plum Fairy’s palace in the Land of Sweets.

In a small village, guests are arriving for a Christmas Eve party at the home of Dr. and Mrs. Stahlbaum and their children, Clara and Fritz. It started as a story called “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King.” A little more than 100 years ago, this beloved tale was made into a ballet called “The Nutcracker.” It has become one of the most popular ballets.
