NEWS BREAK Devastating volcanic eruption expected in Iceland

Iceland, known to many as the “land of fire and ice” is facing an ecological crisis. Following thousands of earthquakes in the vicinity of the town of Grindavík on the southwestern coast, residents have been evacuated, businesses have been shuttered, and experts are closely monitoring the situation. A large sinkhole has opened up in the middle of the town and has the potential to be a vent for the magma that is currently very active beneath the surface. If the volcano erupts, the entire town of Grindavík could suffer massive damage, if not entire destruction.

IDF claims to have found Hamas armory under hospital

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have overtaken Al-Rantisi hospital in Gaza and showed embedded news affiliates evidence of what it believes to be an abandoned Hamas armory, with weapons and munitions left behind. While as yet unconfirmed, if it turns out to be an actual Hamas armory, the find would prove that Hamas is indeed using health facilities and hospitals as a shield for its underground operations.

Car kit manufacturer looks for Morgan County property By Linda Petersen

irkham Motorsports, a manufacturer of component kits of the 1965 Shelby Cobra, is looking to relocate to Morgan County from Provo, Economic Development Director James Ebert told county commissioners at their Nov. 7 meeting. The company makes the car frames and bodies at their factory in an old MiG fighter factory in Poland. The rest of the car is made at its site in Provo. David Kirkham, the company’s owner, is currently looking for 500 to 1,000 acres in the south end of Morgan County to build a new facility, Ebert said. While Kirkham Motorsports is currently headquartered in Provo, “I think what they felt is they're getting kind of built around and they're ready to move to a more rural location,” Ebert said. “I think they've been looking at Morgan for a while because they've been having this discussion for a long period of time. I actually talked to someone else who said they had a conversation with them about five years ago, and they thought they were looking at moving about five years ago. So, I think they're in a position now

where they're really ready to move forward.” Kirkham Motorsports is considered a clean business with minimal manufacturing, noise, and infrastructure demands and with more than $5 million in annual sales, “it does appear that they're in a good financial stable position right now and they're probably positioned to make a move of their headquarters if that's what their choice is to do,” Ebert said. Kirkham envisions his facility as being more than a manufacturing site, according to Ebert. Instead, Kirkham thinks it could be a recreation destination like High West Distillery in Wanship which provides tours of their operation, along with a tasting room, restaurant, and gift shop. “Instead of having just a manufacturing and assembly building, he's trying to make it a destination, understanding that people traveled from all over the country, all over the world, to come and be a part of this,” Ebert said. “And whether it's to be part of driving one of the cars, or whether it's an experience of seeing them, or whether it's actually the purchasing, the delivery of it, he wants

to build that experience within this headquarters.” Kirkham is hoping he can get Morgan County’s support to move ahead with his project, along with help funding infrastructure in the area through an RDA, Ebert said. “I think it could be a potentially good use, particularly if it's developed out in a way that is similar to the High West distillery because that would be a tourism-based sort of use,” Ebert said. “So, I don't have any issues that way. They obviously are going to be responsible for finding a property that will work for them and I'm going to evaluate the rezoning request in the context of that. And whether it's done as a Planned Area Development, or we tailor a zone to fit the property, or if it fits within an existing zone, great.” While commissioners expressed skepticism that Kirkham could find a site that big in Morgan County, they concluded the discussion that evening by saying they would be willing to explore the idea with him in the future. l

M. Russell Ballard passes away

World religious leader and acting president of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints M. Russell Ballard passed away Sunday, Nov. 12. President Ballard had just been released from a brief stay in the hospital, and had been attending to regular duties as his health permitted. Called as an apostle in 1985, President Ballard leaves behind a legacy of service in both the Intermountain West, as well as the world. He was 95 at the time of passing.

ive Morgan County residents to whom Judge Noel S. Hyde recently gave the go-ahead to pursue a referendum to challenge a zoning ordinance allowing the development of Wasatch Peaks Ranch have filed suit against the county and the developer. In an Oct. 16 complaint filed in Second District Court, Whitney Croft, David Pike, Robert Bohman, Brandon Peterson, and Shelley Paige say Morgan County has violated their civil rights by going ahead on Oct. 3 and approving phase 3A of the proposed development. According to the residents’ and their attorney’s interpretation of the law, the county cannot approve any phases of the development until the referendum issue has been resolved. The timing of the ruling from Judge Hyde did not allow the five the time to collect signatures to get the is-

sue on the Nov. 21, 2023, ballot. They are still hoping for the petition to get on the next ballot but say county officials have even refused to prepare the documentation they need to do so pending Wasatch Peaks Ranch’s appeal of Judge Hyde’s ruling. They also claim that the 3A subdivisions that were granted approval did not comply with the zoning in effect for the property before the county approved the ordinance. “By accepting subdivision applications, approving them, and allowing the subdivision plats to be recorded, Morgan County and WPR are violating the injunction in Utah Const. Art. VI prohibiting the effectiveness of an ordinance while a referendum is pending,” their complaint says. “To justify violating this constitutional mandate, Morgan County and WPR have created a discriminatory classification system where the Constitution applies as written to select referenda but not others. In this prejudicial system, if Morgan County grants a referendum application the ordinance in question does not go into effect. Conversely, if Morgan County denies an application, as it did here, the contested law becomes effective and the landowner – WPR – is permitted to proceed with development while the referendum is contested,” it says. The county has also unlawfully discriminated against them because it has deprived them of their right to contest the original zoning ordinance which greenlighted the Wasatch Peaks Ranch development, they say. “To compound this systemic prejudice and discrimination, even though the Court concluded the application is referable to voters, Morgan County is allowing WPR to enjoy the benefit of an effective zone change while they appeal,” the complaint says. “By treating the ordinance as effective while the Plaintiffs are conducting a referendum, Morgan County is unlawfully discriminating against Plaintiffs and all Morgan County citizens’ interest is participating in a fair and balanced referendum by placing its limited, delegated legislative power and WPR’s economic interests above Plaintiffs’ superior, reserved legislative power, thereby denying the right to conduct a referendum “before the law or ordinance goes into effect.” But Morgan County and its attorney Garrett Smith have a different interpretation of the law. At the Oct. 3 meeting, Smith told the commissioners that Hyde’s ruling would effectively act as a stay if Wasatch Peaks Ranch submitted a new development agreement but that applications filed prior to Hyde’s ruling (such as 3A) were already in process and were therefore grandfathered in. “There are various filings that are going before Judge Hyde and the Supreme Court but the legal recommendation from my office is [under the Western Land Equities case law and its project] when an application is submitted it grandfathers the applicant into whatever law existed at the time that application was submitted,” he told the commissioners. “The county is not ignoring Judge Hyde’s decision as some are claiming because we're taking a different approach or I'm recommending a different approach.” On Oct. 18, the five residents filed a motion for a preliminary injunction and temporary restraining order asking the court to order Wasatch Peaks Ranch and Morgan County not to record the plat for the 3A subdivision and not to proceed with any other development until the referendum issues have been resolved. The following day Wasatch Peaks Ranch filed an objection to the residents’ motion, claiming they did not follow the procedures outlined in Utah law to do so. Since the filing, the court has not taken any action. It is unclear what the outcome will be as in all likelihood the future of the 12,000 acres owned by Wasatch Peaks Ranch will be determined in the courts and the litigation is expected to last for some time. l

Morgan seniors lead the way to 3A North football title By Brian Shaw

t the end of any football season, it’s time to pay homage to the guys that got you there. For Morgan head coach Jared Barlow, 19 seniors helped the Trojans earn a 3A North title and carried them to a berth in the 3A semifinals. “I would say just thank you to our seniors,” said Coach Barlow. “It is always difficult to have a season end without a state championship, but this group still put in a lot of work and continued to carry the tradition of Morgan football.” They were athletes like Tate Nelson [87 tackles/five TD receptions] and Zak

Sargent [810 rushing yards/91 tackles and 13 total TD], two guys who helped guide Morgan to an unblemished 5-0 record in the 3A North and an 8-4 record overall. But they were also guys like Christian “Crispy” Nunez, so named by his teammates [and the Morgan Sports Network] for his taste in clothing. And Beau Johnson, who rocketed up the state’s record books with each extra point the kicker booted through the uprights. Brogan Garrett was a 3A track champion in the 400-meter sprint and was a two-year starter for Morgan at wide receiver, hauling in 322 yards and five touchdowns. For Garrett, whose family

was involved in an auto accident, it was a miracle he was even on the field. Derrick Tilby had a father who played at Morgan High. Like many Trojans, Tilby played both ways rushing for 335 yards and four touchdowns while contributing one sack. But Morgan [8-4] was also about guys you may not have read about in the paper. Guys like Beau Spens and Camren Menlove, and Talmadge Sommers and Tytan Willis. Others made their marks in the secondary like Ryder Waldron and Tryker Jones. “They were a group with a lot of personalities, and we had a lot of fun memories throughout the years,” said

Coach Barlow in part. Then there were the guys in the trenches. Cooper McGiven was a 3A Honorable Mention last year. At 6-foot6, Luke Olson was still enough of an athlete to make a reception—as a sophomore. And there were guys like William Fisher and Conner Laughlin, as well as Lane Henderson and Treyson Rich. To name one is to name them all in the eyes of Coach Barlow. “We will miss them and want to thank them for all of their hard work and dedication to our program, knowing that they will go on to become great men and great leaders.” l

Intruder sets Centerville home on fire with owners in it

CENTERVILLE—A Centerville home went up in flames July 21 after a man entered the home and assaulted the homeowners then set the house on fire. Ammon Jacob Woodhead, 37, of Salt Lake City was arrested after he allegedly went into the home at 329 E. 1825 North in Centerville and threatened the three elderly adults living there that he was going to burn the house down with them in it. He poured gas around the house and then set it on fire. The homeowners were able to escape but suffered injuries from the assault.

t’s been an eventful year here in Davis County with some highs and lows but hopefully the good outweighed the bad. The county has seen a lot of growth and even more is expected as people recognize what a great place it is. With that growth comes the need for new roads likew the West Davis Corridor as well as U.S. 89 improvements. Drivers have had to learn to adapt as they’re rerouted but the end result will be less congestion and easier access to where they’re headed. There are about 1,300 students in the Davis School District who are homeless or at-risk. The Davis Education Foundation has worked hard with community partners to open Teen Resource Centers in several high schools for those students to have a safe place to go and receive the help they need. The district also welcomed a new superintendent and appointed a director for the Office of Equal Opportunity. The newly renovated Memorial Courthouse opened to the public after a two year project to restore it to its original 1930s glory. There were some heartbreaking events too. A wildfire burned the Centerville hillside and an 8-year-old girl was killed in an accident during the Kaysville 4th of July parade. An intruder entered a Centerville home, assaulted the elderly homeowners and set it on fire. However, those tragedies brought out the good in Davis County residents who rallied around the families impacted and shared with them their love and support. That’s what makes the county unique. It’s filled with good people who just want to make life better for their family, friends and neighbors. It’s a new year – let’s make it a good one.

A LOOK BACK NINE M.H.S. STUDENTS ENROLLED AS MEMBERS OF ALL STATES BAND

Nine music students of Morgan and six students from Ogden have been selected as members of the all-state band which will be assembled at the Utah State Agricultural College Jun 6 to 17 for a period of intensive training. The Band will be directed by Professor A.R. McAllister of Joliet, Ill. Professor McAllistor is a nationally famous band leader and his high school band has won the national championship for four consecutive times. During the period of training the entire band will be presented in public concerts. The total membership will include approximately 200 pieces and will be the largest organization of its kind ever assembled in the West.

Mrs. Emma Rich returned home last Saturday after a week's visit with her children in Ogden. Mrs. Levi Waldron has returned home from a visit with her daughter Mrs. George Turner in Ogden. Miss Bessi Brough of Heber was a Sunday visitor with home folks. Mrs. Ford Dickson, the little daughter of Reed Dickson who has been suffering with an ulcerated tooth for the past week, is better at this writing. Paul Rose was a visitor with home folks Sunday.

urkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, stuffing, cranberry sauce, sweet potatoes, green bean casserole, relish trays and a variety of pies: all of this put together makes a great Thanksgiving feast. However, on what is known as the first Thanksgiving in Nov. of 1621, when the pilgrims had an autumn feast with the Native Americans who had helped them plant crops in the spring, the food was very different. While there is little documentation of what food was served, historians have suggested that many of the dishes were likely prepared using traditional Native American spices and cooking methods. Edward Winslow, the pilgrim chronicler, noted in his journal that Governor William Bradford sent men on a fowling mission to prepare for the event that was planned for three days. He noted that they had a great store of wild turkeys and venison. It is believed that the fowling party also returned with birds that the colonists regularly consumed such as ducks, geese and swans. Winslow also said that the Wampanoag guest arrived with five deer. With meat aplenty, the pilgrims added fruits and vegetables that had just been collected from the first autumn harvest. Vegetables that most likely appeared at the first Thanksgiving included onions, beans, lettuce, spinach, cabbage, carrots, and peas, along with fruit that was indigenous to the region including blueberries, plums, grapes, gooseberries, raspberries, and cranberries. In addition, they likely consumed fish, shellfish, and squash such as pumpkin; however, because of lack of butter and flour they couldn't make pies. The ever-popular mashed potatoes and sweet potatoes did not make an appearance at the feast either because potatoes had not been introduced to the colonists at that time. Since the first corn harvest had been so successful due to Squanto of the Patuxet tribe showing the Pilgrims how to cultivate corn only days after disembarking from the Mayflower in Mar. of 1621, after spending a harsh winter on the ship, Governor Bradford organized a celebratory feast with the Wampanoag tribe and Squanto joining them. Although the Pilgrims themselves may not have used the term first Thanksgiving, the three-day festival started a tradition of having a day of giving thanks. In 1623 after a long drought that threatened the harvest, a second day of Thanksgiving celebration took place. Throughout the seventeenth century, colonists have celebrated their own days of giving thanks at a different time during the year. In 1789 George Washington issued the first Thanksgiving proclamation in the United States. He called upon Americans to express their gratitude on Thursday, Nov. 26, for the happy conclusion to the Revolutionary War along with the successful ratification of the U.S. Constitution. Throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, communities slowly adopted a day of Thanksgiving, celebrating on different months and days, as it was not yet a national holiday. In 1863, at the height of the Civil War, a proclamation asking all Americans to ask God to “commend to his tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife” and to “heal the wounds of the nation” was sent out; and President Abraham Lincoln scheduled Thanksgiving for the last Thursday in Nov. It would be celebrated on that day every year until 1939, when President Franklin D. Roosevelt moved the holiday to the fourth Thursday of Nov. in an attempt to spur retail sales during the Great Depression. In 1941, Roosevelt signed a bill making Thanksgiving the fourth Thursday in Nov. For nearly 80 years, Thanksgiving has been celebrated on the fourth Thursday in Nov. which can make Thanksgiving Day range from Nov. 22 to Nov. 28. This year, Thanksgiving Day will be celebrated on Nov. 23. Most people in Morgan celebrate Thanksgiving the same way as most Americans. This involves family gatherings with a large feast, parades on television and football. For many, Thanksgiving Day also marks the start of the Christmas season. l

Warrior Rizen finalist for conservation award

arrior Rizen Ranch is one of three finalists selected to receive the 2023 Utah Leopold Conservation Award that recognizes farmers, ranchers and forestland owners who inspire others with their dedication to land, water and wildlife habitat management on private, working land. The award is given in honor of conservationist Aldo Leopold. John and Barbara Schilete’s cattle ranch, Warrior Rizen in Morgan County, uses a rotational grazing system to promote soil health, according to a release. The Schiletes use an implement called a subsoiler, to prevent erosion and retain snowmelt and rain in the soil. They also

use solar water pumps to provide drinking water for wildlife and livestock. “Agriculture landowners in Utah do an amazing job of conservation and care of their landscapes and resources,” said Brent Tanner, Utah Cattlemen's Association Executive Vice President. “This year’s Leopold Conservation Award finalists are prime examples of the efforts our farmers and ranchers are making to be good stewards of the land.” The award recipient will be presented $10,000 at a ceremony Nov. 17 at the Utah Farm Bureau Federation’s Annual Convention in Provo. l

ot all who served in World War II were men. Reba Skinner was born in Arkansas on June 20, 1922. She was working in Hopkin’s Café when she said she heard that Pearl Harbor was attacked. In May 1942, she was working at an army depot when someone said she should join the Navy, and that’s exactly what she did. Reba enlisted in Salt Lake and was inducted into the Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service (WAVES) program. The WAVES program was created for women to take the place of men who were formerly serving in shore positions. These women would work as secretaries, parachute riggers, machinists, or even radio operators. Reba and the other women she left with went to Hunter College in New York for training, after that, she went to business school in Cedar Falls at Iowa State College. “Life at ‘Hunter was quite stressful,” Reba writes, they had little time for meals, marched, drilled, and had “Too many” shots. When Reba completed her training, she was given the rank of Yeoman 3rd Class and assigned to the Armed Guard Center Pacific on Treasure Island in San Francisco California. The train ride from Iowa to California was memorable and less than comfortable for her, "There were five of us and we were put in the train smoker.” She loved

OLD FASHIONED PECAN PIE Julia Child offered this invariable advice to people: Learn how to cook – try new recipes, learn from your mistakes, be fearless, and above all have fun! It is a wonderful time of year to stretch just a bit out of the comfort zone – to bake and then share. The recipes that are brought to you have been assembled and honed. They can be reproduced successfully. This pecan pie originally came from America’s Test Kitchen. It was introduced to me by a great friend, Kim. She is fighting cancer and yet found the strength to put together this little expression of heaven in a pie. What an example she is of finding joy in the kitchen. A few tips she offers: 1. Use REAL maple syrup 2. Have all the ingredients ready to go 3. Don’t overfill the crust (1/2’ headspace) but still cook the prepared pie on a cooking sheet. 4. The eggs have to be tempered in! add one yolk at a time, whisking vigorously to prevent the egg from cooking in the hot liquid.

INGREDIENTS: 1 C Pecans 1 Pie shell, uncooked 1 C Maple syrup 1 C Brown sugar 1 T Dark Molasses 1/2 C Heavy cream 4 T Butter, cold & cubed 1/2 t Salt 6 large Egg yolks INSTRUCTIONS: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees– On a cooking sheet covered with parchment paper, spread out pecans, bake 5-8 minutes. Allow to cool and then rough chop. Combine in a medium saucepan the maple syrup, sugar, molasses & heavy cream over medium heat for 3 minutes – until sugar is dissolved. Remove from heat – let sit for 5 minutes to slightly cool. Add butter, salt – mix a bit ...then add one yolk at a time whisking vigorously. Place nuts on top of the uncooked pie shell then pour syrup mixture over the top. Preheat the oven to 450 degrees, place the pie on the bottom rack then immediately turn down the oven to 325 degrees. Cook for one hour. When pie is removed from the oven, it should still jiggle (will set up as it cools) . Allow to cool for one hour, followed by placing it in the refrigerator for three hours. When ready to serve, bring your flavorful pecan pie back to room temperature.

‘The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes’ and ‘Trolls Band Together’ a mix of bright spots and disappointments By Jenniffer Wardell The Movie Guru

The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes (in theaters)

The biggest problem with prequels is that they’re doomed from the start. Stories normally begin in dark places before the protagonists make things better, so prequel stories have to end in whatever dark place the original story started. While that can occasionally be chilling, a dark shadow hanging over a bright ending, mostly it’s just disappointing. Prequels can never be their own story, because the ending has to be forced into a very specific spot no matter how poorly it serves the story that came before it. That disappointment hangs over the ending of “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes.” While the movie does offer interesting glimpses of the history behind the popular “Mockingjay” novels, it also squashes a story that I would have loved to see play out on its own terms. Coriolanus Snow and Lucy Gray are hardly the heroic figures Katniss and Peeta were, but that just makes them that much more fascinating to watch. The mov-

ie (and book that serves as its basis) forces them to be a tragic romance, but they would have worked so much better as co-conspirators. Because despite what trailers and other reviews might tell you, the younger version of President Snow was never innocent. He was an ambitious schemer from the very beginning, though not without reason, and though Lucy is better at playing innocent there are moments when she shows her own fangs. They should have been given at least a second movie to tear each other apart, not a rushed ending that felt less like the tragic weight of fate and more like a scriptwriter sweeping in. They could have done so much beautiful damage together. But sadly, there’s no room for something like that in a prequel. Grade:  Two and a half stars

Trolls Band Together (in theaters)

By this point, you already know if you’re a fan of the “Trolls” movies. The series is as candy-colored as the main characters themselves, full of silly jokes, catchy musical numbers, and easily consumable life lessons. It’s completely safe for kids, great to sing along with, and even manages to be unexpectedly heartwarming on occasion. As long as you have a high sugar toler-

ance, it’s a surprising amount of fun. Even if you don’t, it might be worth giving “Trolls Band Together” a try. I’ve been cynical about the series, but the movie has an open-hearted sweetness that is easy to get sucked into. The message about how important it is to be there for people scales for both kids and adults, and there are a few more serious moments that anchor it all. There’s a chance you might get emotional. If you lived through the boy-band era, you might even laugh. Though kids in the audience probably won’t get the generous amount of boy-band jokes spread throughout the movie, there are at least a few that will make parents snicker. There are several other jokes that seemed aimed at an older audience – there’s at least one whole sequence of parenting gags – but there’s enough physical silliness to keep kids entertained. The animation has a few real flights of fancy, including a “hustle mode” that was consistently delightful. The regular animation also had a few nice touches, including a water bead ocean you’ll absolutely want to put in your mouth even though you shouldn’t. Grade: Two and a half stars



Q: I caught part of an old movie the other day where Jim Belushi was an aggressive and unethical school principal. It looked really good, but I don’t know what it was called.

A: The title was hiding in plain sight, so to speak. The movie you’re thinking of is “The Principal” (1987). It was part of a wave of movies dramatizing the panic America felt at the state of “inner city” schools at the time —

other examples include “Lean On Me” (1989), “The Substitute” (1995) and “Dangerous Minds” (1995). But even these were all following in the footsteps of better-remembered films such as “Blackboard Jungle” (1955) and “To Sir, With Love” (1967). “The Principal” takes a somewhat more fanciful approach to the topic. While the critically acclaimed entries in the category went for gritty realism, “The Principal” instead made star Jim Belushi (“According to Jim”) into a reluctant action hero. He beats one of his students unconscious, and the film’s climax plays out as a sort of Wild West-style showdown between Belushi’s Principal Latimer and the head of the school’s dominant gang. There’s also a weird bit of trivia to distinguish this one. Three years later,

Belushi (maybe, technically) reprised his role in the wacky, B-grade sci-fi flick “Abraxas, Guardian of the Universe” (1990). It’s a brief cameo, but he is indeed playing a school principal named Latimer.

Tennis legend and social activist Billie Jean King hosts “Groundbreakers,” a new two-hour documentary, Tuesday, Nov. 21, on PBS. The documentary looks at Title IX, a small provision in the 1972 Education Amendments, that opened the floodgates for young girls to participate in sanctioned sports activities.

If certain performers didn’t have a new Christmas movie on cable annually, one might question whether it’s really the holiday season — and Bethany Joy Lenz is one of them. The “One Tree Hill” and “Pearson” alum has been seen in yuletide attractions for a good number of years, proven by how often those repeat at this time of year. Her newest one, “A Biltmore Christmas,” making its debut Sunday, Nov. 26, on Hallmark Channel, casts the actress as a screenwriter hired to do a remake of a classic film called “His Merry Wife!” She goes to the site where the original version was made, the legendary Biltmore Estate, for research. Soon, she finds herself transported by a magical hourglass to the 1947 set of the original picture. Another Hallmark regular, Kristoffer Polaha (“Mystery 101”), is Lenz’s leading man in the story. They’re joined by two veterans of the Star Trek franchise, Jonathan Frakes (“Star Trek: The Next Generation”) and Robert Picardo (“Star Trek: Voyager”). The movie was made largely on location at Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina, and production began last January to take advantage of remaining holiday decorations from last year. (By starting then, it was also completed prior to the SAGAFTRA actors’ strike.) With her knack for conveying whimsy and irony simultaneously, Lenz has had many opportunities to show off her Christmas cred, supplying both pathos and humor in seasonal attractions for both Lifetime and Hallmark Channel. Frequently repeated highlights have included “Snowed-Inn Christmas” (2017) and “Poinsettias for Christmas” (2018).

Jared Heaton is an attentive and thorough dermatologist & MOHs surgeon, serving his patients in Bountiful, Centerville, North Salt Lake, Woods Cross, Farmington, Kaysville and West Bountiful. Dr. Heaton is board-certiﬁed in dermatology and is currently a member of the American Society of MOHs Surgeons. Dr. Heaton prides himself in serving all patient populations and treating all areas of dermatology from children through retirement age. Dr. Heaton performs skin cancer diagnosis and treatment, MOHS surgery, mole exam and removal, acne, warts, cyst removal, spider vein treatment, CO2 laser resurfacing, microneedling and many other skin and cosmetic related procedures.

Marc Mitton is a Utah native and cherishes the opportunity to serve the people of this beautiful state. His passion for dermatology began after receiving his own skin cancer diagnosis as a medical student. He believes that listening and being thorough are the keys to successfully practicing medicine. He specializes in skin cancer detection and removal, rashes, acne, warts and molluscum, as well as several other skin conditions. Dr. Mitton has speciﬁc interests in complex dermatological conditions and dermoscopy (the use of a light-based tool for classifying skin lesions and certain rashes). He prioritizes staying up to date on recent research, best medical practices and surgical techniques, and enjoys applying them into his practice.

Dr. Heaton received his undergraduate degree in International Relations with a minor in Asian Studies from Brigham Young University (BYU). He earned his medical degree from Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine (AZCOM) in Glendale, AZ. And completed both his internship and medical residency in Tampa, Florida.

Dr. Mitton received his undergraduate degree in biology at the University of Utah and graduated with his medical degree from Rocky Vista University in Parker, CO. He completed his intern year of residency at LewisGale Hospital Montgomery in Blacksburg, VA and his dermatology residency at Lehigh Valley Health Network in Allentown, PA. His residency provided many opportunities for specialized training including treating potentially life-threatening skin conditions at one of the state’s burn units, training with a nationally-renowned pediatric dermatologist, and countless exposures to rare and difﬁcult-to-treat cases at conferences on a nearweekly basis through Lehigh Valley and the University of Pennsylvania.

In his spare time, Dr. Heaton enjoys snowboarding, mountain biking, vacations to Bear Lake, movies, grilling and spending time with his wife and three children at home in Bountiful.

In his free time, Dr. Mitton enjoys spending time with his wife and two kids, being outdoors, biking, board games, and especially making weekend breakfasts with specialty pancakes.

What goes in a compost bin?

Anything organic can go in the compost bin. Organic: Things that were once alive. For example, paper made from trees is organic because trees were alive.

1. Composting starts with food that is left uneaten, or “food scraps.”

2. Put the food scraps into the compost or “green” bin to be sure it goes to a composting facility.

3. At the composting facility, your organic waste is mixed with things like woodchips, branches and shredded newspaper. This slowly rots and turns into healthy soil.

Inorganic: Things that are made of things that are not from animals or plants, living or dead. For example, diamonds, table salt, and silver are inorganic.

Composting Is Good for Us! When healthy compost from composting facilities is mixed with soil, it makes plants grow better and improves the nutrition of our food. And it keeps food waste out of the landfill where it would have created methane gas.

Food scraps and other compostable waste create methane gas when they rot in a landfill. Methane gas molecules are released from the landfill into the atmosphere. They absorb heat and make more heat by heating up molecules around them. This can cause the earth’s temperatures to rise.

Food scraps and other compostable trash make up the largest category of waste in our landfills. When you stop sending food scraps to the landfill, it helps to slow down the filling of the landfill. The compost facility turns it into soil that’s healthy for plants.
