Murray City takes great pride in its rich historical heritage, and efforts to preserve its historic properties are indeed underway. Despite challenges posed by the loss of some old buildings, the City has been proactive in safeguarding and revitalizing the remaining architectural gems. One prominent example of this commitment is the ongoing renovation of the Murray Theater, a significant cultural landmark. The restoration proj-

ect is an investment of more than $8 million, showcasing the City’s dedication to bringing back the theater to its former glory. This rejuvenation effort will not only preserve its historic value but also reinvigorate the local arts and entertainment scene. Another testament to Murray City’s preservation efforts is the restoration of the Murray Mansion, an architectural marvel built in 1899. Acquired by the City in 2017, plans are underway to convert it into the Murray Museum, open for public exploration. This transformation will allow residents and visitors to immerse themselves in the city’s history and culture. Moreover, the recent approval of funding by the City Council to renovate the old Murray National Guard Armory Motorpool building stands as a significant step forward. This hidden gem, nestled in the heart of Murray Park, will be reimagined as Creekside Cottage, a versatile venue for meetings and receptions. Opening its doors to the public for special occasions, it adds yet another dimension to the preservation and utilization of Murray’s historical assets.

Mark your calendar for an extra special Tree Lighting Ceremony! The tree is brand new and stands 70-feet tall! There will also be beautiful smaller trees around the base of the tree, and a special arch to walk through. The event is Saturday, December 2nd at 6pm at the City Hall Plaza, 10 East 4800 South. Santa will also be there with special treats for the children. The Hillcrest Jr. High choir will perform and the Murray Youth Committee will have delicious hot chocolate! Bring an unwrapped toy to donate to the Murray Youth Committee’s toy drive. It will be a festive event to ring in the season!

Murray resident, Darrell Jones, graduated from the Naval Academy in 1956 and served during the Viet Nam war. Darrell met with Murray Museum staff and volunteers and shared some amazing stories about his time in the military. One of his favorite stories is about a group of soldiers coming together in the midst of the Viet Nam war, to put on a concert of spiritual hymns. “That was one of my highlights in my life when we did Handel’s Messiah in the middle of a war zone in a foreign country. We had a couple of practice days; we were not very good…We walked out and it was absolutely jammed with people, and it was two and three deep all the way around the place. The only accompaniment that we had was one young, enlisted man, a young soldier who knew how to play the piano, and that was all the music we had. We started singing and the people were just massed around these things, and we sang and every single person was quiet except those of us trying to sing…It was such a special thing to be in a war zone and doing that.” According to Darrell, there wasn’t a dry eye in the house. The Murray City Museum is continuously collecting military stories from our Veterans and residents. If you would like to contribute a story, please reach out to rcoates@murray.utah.gov. HAPPY 100 YEARS! Murray Park will be 100 years old in 2024 – and the city will be celebrating! Make your own mark on history by designing a logo for our Centennial Celebration. The logo will be used as part of Murray Park festivities on June 15, 2024 where we might see it on flyers, banners, even a t-shirt. Who knows?
