There are moments in our lives when we’re reminded just how much we rely on one another. Not in big, loud ways, but in the quiet, frightening moments. The moments when something goes wrong, when fear creeps in, when we don’t quite know what to do next. And then… help arrives. For many of us, that help comes in the form of an Emergency Medical Services (EMS) provider. I’ve spent some time lately thinking about that. About the men and women who show up, day or night, rain or shine, ready to take care of complete strangers as if they were their own family. No hesitation. No complaints. Instead, they bring compassion, skill, and a willingness to serve. That’s why Murray City will be recognizing Emergency Medical Services Week from May 17–23, 2026. It’s a small window of time to honor something significant that happens every single day. When you talk to our EMS providers, you will soon realize they don’t do it for the recognition. They do it because they care deeply for their fellow man. They do it to make a difference. They do it because, somewhere along the way, they felt called to help people in their most vulnerable moments. And that’s not easy work. They see people on some of their hardest days. Each of them carries stories, some joyful, some heartbreaking. They make split-second decisions that can change the course of someone’s life. That kind of responsibility takes a special kind of person.

I’ve always believed that most people are good. Truly good. And our EMS teams prove that every single day. We’ll be kicking off the week with our annual Pancake Breakfast at Fire Station 81 on May 16. It’s a simple thing that has been happening for generations: good food, good company, and a simple chance for all of us to come together and to say thank you. I’ve learned over the years that gratitude has a way of changing us. It softens us. It reminds us what matters. It brings us a little closer together. And in a world that can feel a bit overwhelming at times, those small connections matter more than ever. So during this week, I’d ask you to take a moment. If you see an EMS provider, thank them. If you know one, reach out. If you have a story where someone helped you or your family, share it. Those stories matter. They remind us of the good that’s all around us. We are blessed to live in a community where people show up for each other. I see it every day. Let’s continue to take care of one another. Let’s be kind. Let’s be patient. Let’s look out for our neighbors. And let’s never forget the people who are always ready to answer the call when we need them most. I love this community. I really do. —Brett Hales, Mayor of Murray
