Merry Christmas, Oneida County! The Birth of a King and the Lord of all creation
VICTORY BAPTIST CHURCH
Once again we have come to the time of year we go crazy spending money, celebrating something we have forgotten. The world we live in has tried to get our focus on worldly things and ideas, and it seems we have forgotten the real reason we should be celebrating--the birth and manifestation of our creator’s love for His creation. At the first Christmas there was no Santa clause, no Christmas tree, and there was a gift for everyone that we have overlooked. The birth of God with us (Emanuel). What has this become? On the first Christmas, at the birth of Jesus, the word of God became flesh. The promise of God became real tangible proof. Whatever you won’t to believe will not change what truly happened that first Christmas. The shepherds in the field were visited by the Angel who proclaimed the birth of Jesus the Christ. The telling is in Luke chapter 2 beginning in verse 10 -12 where the Angel told what had happened, as was foretold in the old testament. The Angel proclaimed that he was bringing to the world good tidings of great Joy, which shall be to ALL PEOPLE, from that point till now. The Angel continued to tell how this Event would be important to ALL LIVING PEOPLE as the Angel proclaimed that God had intervened to bring us a SAVIOUR and where HE had been born, in the flesh like man. The Angel continued to tell where this event had taken place and where to find this new born Savior. This was one of the signs given us, that they could find the child wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. This in itself tells us how God humbled Himself! He was not born in an inn, but out with the animals in a manger. Why was there such a Celebrating from Heaven when this event occurred? This birth was a world changing event for all times. The life of a savior, the promise of God being manifested to the world! God knew why it had to occur—it was God's plan to redeem mankind from sin, back to a relationship with the Creator. Still, God shows His love for us so much He sent His Word in the flesh to fulfill His promise to us and deliver us from the bondage of sin! And God made it so simple that anyone could have salvation. Man has been trying ever since to change God's promise with religion and it's rules to make it almost impossible to have salvation. Ask yourself why was Jesus always at odds with and opposed the religions leaders of the time? And ask yourself if it would be different now? The reason is and was religion tries to con-
trol the people with rules and laws they themselves can’t keep. Religion doesn't allow questions, just blind obedience. What is wrong with this? Should it not be okay to ask questions? This would not be bad if it leads us to salvation. But the only salvation we can get is in Jesus as a personal relationship with Jesus Himself ,which is the Word of God in the flesh. Why is it wrong to question some of the rules and laws of religion if religion can free you from sin? A person on their own can’t be freed from sin except through the blood of Jesus covering their sins, not by the works of the law, which means organized religion. Why did Jesus claim to be the Way, the Truth , the Life eternal, and we get to heaven only by Jesus. Because of Jesus Holy Blood sacrifice. This is the true Savior that was born and changed the whole world with His birth, life, death, resurrection, and assertion into the place we all would like to go! If you think you can keep the law and be accepted then you have missed the truth the whole Word of God tells us, or by abiding in a religion that you can't try in the fire, you’re in big trouble . You have heard these scriptures your whole life--did you not see the Promise of God for you personally? The First Presbyterian Church Wishes You a Joyous and Peaceful Christmas! Once again we approach the coming Christmas Season with hearts full of joy. Why? Because we can again celebrate God’s Gift, His precious Son, sent to do for us what we absolutely cannot do. His blood shed on the cross did everything for us. It washed away our every sin and made us God’s dear children again. Satan’s power is broken. We will live eternally in heaven because of Jesus’ birth, death and resurrection. Glory to God in the Highest. What should Christmas mean to us? HOPE….Jesus shared human experiences in order to show us how to live. His forgiveness gives us hope, lighting our way to God. We can share this hope with others. The free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 6:23) LOVE…..Through Jesus’ birth, God lovingly offers us union – no longer need we be separated from God or each other. Jesus opened the pathway to new relationships based on love and harmony with all things. He has made known to us…a plan for the fullness of time, to gather up all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth. (Ephesians 1:9-10) PEACE…..Through Jesus Christ, we’re able to experience true free-
dom and receive forgiveness for our sins. We’re able to be at peace with one another and with God – and to build peace throughout the world. “Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts….” Colossians 3:15 JOY…..The birth of Jesus calls us to a joyful new way of life. To live our faith, we’re called to follow Jesus’ example and teachings in all we do – willingly and joyfully. “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” 2 Corinthians 5:17 Our prayer: Eternal God, at times we are taken aback by all the absurd violence, the many wars, the human greed, the injustice and the prejudice that turns man against man and nation against nation. In your perfect world no sword is drawn but the sword of righteousness, there is no strength but the strength of love. Guide the nations of the world into ways of justice and truth so that all peoples may be gathered together when Christ comes to rule the earth as Prince of Peace. As your children, loving and caring for one another, may we greet with joy the coming of our Redeemer, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever. Amen. All of us have memories of celebrating Christmas when we were young. I have always been intrigued by the innocence of toddlers and young children when it comes to Christmas. It is my observation that most young children are drawn to figurines of the nativity sets, especially the figurine of the “Christ child”. Many have observed the “Christ child” being removed and being carried around or the pieces of the nativity arranged differently. When asked why the figurines have been rearranged the child suggests they wanted to put Him in the middle so everyone can see the Christ child. Little children can teach us much regarding Christmas. Years ago as Krishele and I were having a family home evening we ask our young daughter what song she wanted to sing. She said “The little Lord Jesus”. Both Krishele and I were not aware of such a song by this title. It wasn’t until later that we realized she wanted to sing “Away in a Manger”. She seemed to understand the true focus of Christmas -the little Lord Jesus.

On that first Christmas night…As Mary and Joseph came to Bethlehem they found no room in the inn for Mary to bring forth her firstborn son. Everywhere around them was full and no one seemed willing to help them They didn’t try to make room. Do we turn Him away because we have no room in our lives. Do we make room in our lives for the Savior? What can we do as families and individuals to make room for Jesus? Shepherds left their flocks by night and came with haste to seek the Christ Child. The shepherds came seeking the Good Shepherd. Our lives are filled with many good things that keep us busy; keeping us from seeking the Good Shepherd. What can we leave behind to seek this Jesus. We have responsibilities and duties, but what can we do to simplify our life and to seek this Jesus? Wise men from the east also came seeking the Christ Child. Following the star in the heavens brought them to the true light of the world. Each of them had a gift that they desired to give to the Christ Child. What gifts CHRISTMAS MESSAGES On Page 2
Community Dinner on Christmas Continuing a yearly tradition, Marcia Stocks and other volunteers will be hosting a free community Christmas Dinner on Christmas Day from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Event Center. The idea behind the dinner is to make sure that everyone has a place to spend Christmas, and people to spend it with. Stocks clarifies that “this is NOT a one man show! It could not be done without the community backing, with donations of items from monetary, food or people’s precious time to serve others on Christmas Day! A family is asked every year to come and serve. It is made sure that they don’t have littles at home. It was never meant to take people away from their own families. The feeling that was hoped for when people arrived was to make sure they felt special. It is supposed to be different than them walking up getting their own food. For some people, it is the only time they can come and really just sit and enjoy. As far as the gifts go, it is the only time that they may have gotten a gift in a long time. Come and enjoy. The dinner has since moved out of the senior center and is now at the event center, we will serve baked potatoes instead of mashed, not sure about the big man in the red suit, you’ll have to come out and see!”

can we offer to our Savior? Each of us have been given gifts and talents from our Heavenly Father. Could we give some of our time to our Savior? At this Christmas time and throughout the year, may we be mindful of the gift of the Christ Child to us from our Heavenly Father, for His life, and His atoning sacrifice. May we not only remember the gift that was given to us but may we remember the Giver of the Gift. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16 ) Our Savior invites us to come. He will meet us where we are. Come unto Jesus. Come as you are, come and see, come and adore him, come and behold, come and abide and come follow Me.
“And now, I would commend you to seek this Jesus of whom the prophets and apostles have written, that the grace of God the Father, and also the Lord Jesus Christ, and the Holy Ghost, which beareth record of them, may be and abide in you forever. Amen.” (Ether 12:41) I testify that “The little Lord Jesus” is indeed the Savior of the World, the Living Christ, the Prince of Peace. At this Christmas time may we become more like a little child. May we be a little more kind, more loving, more forgiving and more Christlike. May this be a joyous Christmas for us all and may we see the goodness of God in our lives. Christmas time is a time to reflect back on what we have or have not done to better the lives of our fellow man. The gift that we receive from God in the form of the Christ child is the greatest gift known to mankind. A Savior comes to us giving each of us the hope of eternal salvation. We in turn are called to follow our Saviors lead by sharing our many blessings with those around us. For by giving we receive our greatest gift. It is not all about monetary gifts that matters most. A friendly greeting, acknowledgment of others around us. Simple things that let people know that they matter.

Small things done with great love as St. Teresa of Lisieux would do. These are what each and everyone of us can give as our gift to one another. It comes with no cost. Share the love of Christ with those that surround you. Not only your family but those who deserve it the least. Our Savior let’s us know that the true gift is not just caring for those we love but caring for those who show the world no love. We all know someone out there that meets that criteria. OSWC announces poster winners The annual National Association of Conservation Districts (NACD) Poster Contest was held recently and awarded three young artists with prize money from the Malad Elementary 5th Grade. This contest is sponsored and directed by the Oneida Soil & Water Conservation District. Local winners had the opportunity to compete against other students within Division V which includes Oneida, Power, Portneuf, South Bingham, North/Central Bingham, Caribou, Bear Lake and Franklin Soil Conservation Districts.
The theme for 2025 was “Home is Where the Habitat is”. The fifth graders were challenged with drawing and designing a poster that represented this theme. Approximately 70 students participated and created images on many different habitats including forests, aquatic, and tropical animals and plants. The three winners were announced last week and they received their prize money. First place winner was Bea Chipman $50, 2nd place was Eva Henry $30, and 3rd place was Blakely Horsley $20.

At Christmas there was no snow and no elementary Christmas Program. It was a little unsettling, but we were getting through it. For several years prior friend Helen Ward had taught the children “The Angels Sang.” It was the finale of the elementary program with fourth and fifth grade joining together. For this song the kids honestly thought they were angels, and for those few minutes every one of them were. The old auditorium was filled with people and music and somehow Christmas for me was dependent on that glorious combination…music and kids and that song. Part of the lyrics were: “And the angles sang with the angel band and the stars shone down from above and the message was to all the world, Christ-

The Malad Dragon athletics had a full week of matches, meets and games. With packed schedules against some of the toughest teams and players that they will meet all season, the Dragons claimed some great victories but also suffered some tough losses. Through it all they competed with grit, intensity, and positivity- the Malad Dragon way. Wrestling The Dragon wrestlers hosted their annual Malad Invitational wrestling tournament December 19-20. The two day weekend featured 20 Idaho teams competing in both the boys and girls tournaments. With 5 champions and 14 total individual medalists in the men's wrestling, the Dragons claimed the team champion trophy. In a similar fashion, the Lady Dragon wrestlers earned the top spot in their tournament as well. “It’s always exciting to win in front of our home crowd and go into the Christmas break on a win. We had a lot of help from the parents putting together a successful tournament and we are extremely grateful for all they do for our team.” The team is working hard and will be back on the mat competing in the new year at the Bear Lake tournament on Jan 3rd. Girls Basketball It was a packed week for the Lady Dragon basketball team with three games on their docket. Their schedule held the impressive 5A Fremont Silverwolves of Plains, Utah, the Aberdeen Tigers, and longtime rivals, the Bear Lake Bears. The turbulent weather caused the matchup with the Tigers to be postponed, leaving the MHS team two of their toughest games of the season to play out. Traveling south on Tuesday, December 16, Malad went to play in a game for what many thought was a
long shot. Having played Fremont in a summer league and falling to them, Head Coach Trevor Jones wanted to put them on the schedule- first because challenging the Silverwolves would only help his team improve, but also because he wanted a shot at redemption. Slipping in to steal the ball, Malad won possession of the tipoff but it was Fremont that put the first score on the board of the night. The Lady Dragons quickly countered to tie the game but it was evident early on that it was anyone’s game. Malad led for most of the quarter, but Fremont slipped in a short range shot to take the lead by 1 point to end the opening period 14-13. Malad’s offensive execution kept them in the game, giving them scoring opportunities all across the court including Mady Vanbebber with the shot from the high post, Mikell Keetch as she slipped in for the back door layup, Kiley Miller with the uncontested open 2 pointer, and Izzy Haycock with two free throws to tie the game back up. The Silverwolves brought a challenging defense, making it difficult to cross half court, set up the offense, and even make an entry pass. Offensively, they were a strong team from both the inside game as well as outside the arc, fierce rebounders and locked in free throw shooters. Their solid game kept them ahead as they went into the half time break, 29-23. The battle continued in the second half just as they had left it. Everytime the Lady Dragons would pull within a point of the Silverwolves, they would respond with a score of their own. Midway through the quarter, Malad managed to take a small lead, forcing Fremont to play catch up as they outscored them 1811 in the third quarter. Going into the final quarter of the game, Malad still trailed by 3 points, 41-44. Over the next 8 minutes of the game, the Lady Dragons knew they had to both hold them defensively as well as find a way to execute on offense to pull ahead. To start the quarter, Fremont expanded their lead but it wasn’t too much for Malad to come back from. The Lady Dragons hit a number of crucial shots, going 100% from the free throw line in the final minutes of the game. Despite Fremont’s strategic move to hold the ball on offense to minimize Malad’s offensive possessions, the MHS team slowly chipped away at the lead, evening pulling ahead by 1 point. But with 27 seconds left the Silverwolves hit a deep shot to go up 52-50. The Lady Dragons regrouped before bringing the ball down the court. Keetch with the ball, dribbled into the key, the defense crashing down on her. She kicked out to Haycock on her left, who hit the short jump shot to tie the game. The Silverwolves had one last possession but the MHS team was able to thwart any final scoring opportunities. With two minutes left in overtime, the score was tied, Haycock making a 3 point play off a steal, made layup and free throw. Keetch helped Malad
take the lead as she attacked the basket. With less than a minute left, Fremont came back to hit a 3 pointer to take the lead. Nelson set a screen for Keetch on the outside, and with the defense slipping behind Keetch drained the 3 pointer to put them back up by 2 points. Fremont hoped for a last second shot, but came up short. 9 seconds remaining, the Silverwolves fouled Keetch, putting her at the line for bonus shots. Putting both in, the Lady Dragons were up by 4. Fremont dumped a long shot in the hoop as the buzzer rang, but it wasn't enough to take the lead, Malad winning 63-62. Turning their attention to the next game on Friday, December 19, Malad knew Bear Lake would be a battle. The opening quarter proved exactly that as the Bears went up 14-0 to start the game. The Lady Dragons worked to chip away at the lead, but the gap was too wide to overcome against such a tough opponent. Coming within 7 points, Malad was hopeful but fell short 50-57.
Boys Basketball The Dragon basketball team added two exciting wins to their record as they took down the talented Grace Grizzlies and the tough Ririe Bulldogs. Tuesday, December 16, the MHS team hosted the Grizzlies in their weeknight matchup. The Dragons came out hot in the opening quarter as they went 20-11, catching Grace on their heels as they pushed the ball up the court. Ky Willie grabbed the steal, bringing the ball down to Dragon territory, the team passing it around the outside, getting the defense out of position. Dawson Beutler spotted up at the top of the key, draining the 3 pointer for Malad. Forcing another turnover, Malad scooped up the ball, making the most of a fast break as Easton Green hustled to the block to put in an easy bank shot to put them up 7-3. Justin Toone laid in another basket as he sealed his defender to catch the lob pass from Beutler. Ruger Smith came down to pull down the jumper on the Dragon’s next possession. Malad ended their 10-0 run with two free throws by Toone as they went up 13-3. The MHS team continued to outscore the Grizzlies as they played through the second quarter, but only one point as Grace had finally begun to keep pace with Malad. It became a struggle to guard the Grizzlies as they worked the ball inside, using their size mismatch to their advantage. All too often, Malad’s attempts to keep them from scoring would result in sending Grace to the free throw line. Regardless of the new challenges Grace provided, the MHS team was resilient to find their own ways to keep momentum and control in their hands. Maps continued to bring a high pressure, fast pace game. Through it all, the Dragons did well to minimize errors and turnovers, while forcing them on the other end for their opponent. Throughout the game, Malad only tallied 12 turnovers while Grace had 20. Starting into the fourth quarter up 50-38, the Dragons continued to play with confidence and determination. The Grizzlies attempted a late game surge, but the MHS team was able to weather it and not only hold them off but expand their lead as the final minutes played out. Bonus points from the free throw line played a large part to their fourth quarter game, Ruger, Carter Carey, and Green hitting crucial buckets for Malad. Carey and Ruger each boasted 100% free throw shooting for the night, Carey with 6 and Ruger with 4, helping their team to a 64-54 victory over the Grizzlies. The Dragons faced the Bulldogs in Ririe on Saturday, December 20 in their final game of the year. The scoring of the opening quarter started slow, Malad not connecting with the hoop despite open looks and second shot chances. Still keeping themselves in the game the MHS team trailed by 2 points at the end of the quarter, 12-14. The second quarter wasn’t much different for the Dragons as the Bulldogs expanded their lead, 23-18 going into the half. It seemed that Ririe was going to control the game as they continued to play into the second half, Malad falling even further behind on the scoreboard. But a renewed effort in the fourth quarter quickly brought them, making it anyone’s game to win. Toone played big on the inside, hitting back to back shots in the paint for Malad. Ruger hit two more free throws, followed by a deep 2 pointer at the top of the key on the next possession. In the mix of their run, Green took a charge, a pivotal moment to help swing the energy of the game in Malad’s favor. Carey drove into the key to hit a jumper and take the lead for Malad, 40-39, with 3 minutes left in the game. Defense dominate the next two minutes of the game, the only scoring happening on a foul shot by the Bulldogs to tie the score at 40. With 30 seconds left, Carey made the same drive to the basket to put up 2 more points for Malad to take the quick lead. Ririe managed to make it to the free throw line again, scoring both shots to tie the game again. Making the most out of the final possession of the game, Carey took the pass from the sideline inbound to cast up a deep three with mere seconds left. The ball sailed through the net, putting them ahead, 45-42 to end the game. Head Coach Zach Beutler shared, “The boys continue to show toughness and unity as they’ve navigated injuries and sickness over the last two weeks. We are entering the Christmas break with the best start the varsity boys have had to a basketball season since 2005. We are ranked 4th via maxpreps and the coaches poll with a 6-2 record. The JV currently sits 5-3, with the C Team 4-0.”
