This is the last week to get entries in the Hammin’ It Up at Christmas contest! Entrants have until close of business on Wednesday, December 13 to get their entries to the merchants who are sponsoring the contest. Winners will be drawn at random on Thursday morning December 14 and winners will be notified by the businesses to come pick up their holiday ham! NEWS IN BRIEF Homicide suspect arrested in Bonneville county

According to a Saturday press release from the Bonneville County Sheriff, the county’s dispatch received a call from hunters east of Idaho Falls who had encountered a man naked in a sleeping bag near the roadway. The man was “making odd statements” and eventually identified as Jeremy Albert Best. Best was wanted by Teton County for suspicion of homicide related to the recent death of Best’s wife Kali Jean Randall in Victor, Idaho. 10 month old Zeke Best, Jeremy’s son, was the subject of an ongoing Amber Alert, and was discovered deceased at the scene. Albert’s vehicle was also discovered at the bottom of an embankment near the scene where he was discovered. Best was taken to the Bonneville County jail prior to his arraignment.

Idaho State Police are investigating a fatality crash that occurred on Sunday, December 3, 2023, at 7:47 p.m. on US Highway 30 at milepost 417 in Bear Lake County. A 2013 Chevrolet Impala, driven by a 24-year-old female, with a juvenile passenger, both from Montpelier, were traveling westbound. A 2014 Toyota pickup, driven by a 44-year-old-male, with a 42-year-old-female and two juveniles all from Montpelier, were traveling eastbound. The Chevrolet crossed the center line into the eastbound lanes and impacted the Toyota. The driver of the Chevrolet was transported by ground ambulance to a local hospital where she succumbed to her injuries. She was not wearing a seatbelt. All other involved occupants were transported by ground to a local hospital and were wearing safety restraints. All lanes were blocked for approximately 4 hours while responders worked to clear the scene and assist those involved.

The Interfaith Council once again presented a live nativity pageant behind the courthouse on Monday. The event featured readings from the Christmas story in the New Testament by Brian Jeppsen, and the singing and acting of a number of local kids. Pastor Jack Harwell of the Victory Baptist Church coordinated the proceedings along with other members of the Interfaith Council.

Live Nativity celebrates season This year, the menagerie on hand to support the drama included a camel and a donkey, joining the goats. The animals were provided by Ivy Acres Farm from Grantsville, Utah. The Herald Angels Sing,” “Away in a Manger,” and oth-

Hospital Christmas Party

The Nell J. Redfield Memorial Hospital Christmas Party was held on Monday, December 4, at the Event Center. After a catered dinner, John Williams, CEO of the Hospital, presented service awards to staff who have worked five or more years at the Hospital. The annual Christmas party is a time to thank all staff for their dedication to the Hospital and to the community.

The live nativity is a yearly tradition of the Interfaith Council.

Karen Sue Jensen

SCOUTS CAMPOUT

August 19, 1951 - December 4, 2023 It is with great sadness that the family of Karen Sue Jensen, 72, of Malad City, ID submits her final resume’ on December 4th, 2023. Her blond curly hair and bright blue eyes entered this world August 19th, 1951 in the small farming town of St Johns, KS. She was the youngest of Lawrence and LuLu Clapper Klein’s five Children. Her childhood was spent in Kansas where she had many adventures with the sibling closest to her in age, her sister, Joyce (Maxfield). The family did not have much and presents were sparse. However, one Christmas Karen received a prized Betsy Wetsy doll that she proudly mothered and kept throughout her adolescence. This is where her maternal nature shined through and from then on she always wanted to care for those around her. She loved learning but hated school and cried every time her mother dropped her off. She would often get to stay home from school because she knew just how to tug at her mother’s heart strings. Karen and Joyce had their tonsils taken out together. Karen complained of a sore throat and she told Joyce she knew the cure. She went to the kitchen popped open a can of Hershey’s Chocolate Syrup and drank it straight from the can. Her family believes that’s where her love of chocolate began. It was no secret that she was the apple of Lulu’s eye. Karen often used this clout to “tattle” on her siblings. Not one of them got away with smoking, sneaking out or damaging anything in the house under Karen’s watchful eye. During her childhood the family had a Chihuahua named Tammy. Although it was the “family dog” it seemed to be Karen’s dog and so her love of dogs began. She later had companion dogs Ben and Wolfy who she loved with all her heart. Karen and Joyce were very close and they loved to needle one another. They would banter back and forth about the others faults but fought fiercely with anyone who would say such things to their sister! At the age of 16 her dad’s civil service employment transferred them to Utah and this is where Karen would spend the majority of her adult life. Karen was proud of her amazing work ethic and worked for several employers including Chromalox and Hobart. It was at Hobart where she met the love of her life Douglas J Jensen, they were bound together as husband and wife October 8, 1976 and built a beautiful life. They retired to Malad where they spent their time going on cruises, playing BINGO with friends, and tried to strike it rich at any Casino they could find. Karen loved growing beautiful flowers, feeding humming birds that frequented her yard, cooking, baking and driving FAST CARS. She took special pride in being an Aunt and “Grandma” to her great nieces and nephews. Karen had perfected beef stew, chicken noodle and several other recipes. As a matter of fact her cooking was so good that Kassy (Love - Green) and Karessa (Love) used to pretend to be sick when their mother went out of town or to work so that they could stay at Karen’s

and watch the big TV and be spoiled with delicious food. Karen is widely renowned for her fudge and divinity that she would loving share with family, friends and neighbors. You knew you were loved if you received a plateful of Karen’s famous fudge. Karen had the kindest of hearts and showed love and compassion to all those around her. If you needed anything Karen would find a way to get it to you. One of the proudest days of Karen’s life, through a series of FORTUNATE events, was being reunited with her son, Bill Day. Her new found role of mother, grandmother to Bill’s four children and great grandmother gave her the boasting rights she had waited years to have. She wanted everyone to know how much she loved Bill and how proud she was of who he has become and everything he has accomplished. Her baby boy was precious to her. He was the missing piece that completed her full life. Karen- We will miss the magic you put into your fudge and divinity, your meticulously done hair and savvy sense of style. Thank you for the legacy you left behind! KAREN, or as Bill calls you, MOM - WE LOVE YOU MORE THAN BISCUITS AND GRAVY! Karen is survived by her son Bill (Amy) Day of Kaysville, UT, sister Janette Sallee of Prague, OK, a brother Ronald Klein of Salina, KS and her life long nemesis and partner in crime a loved sister Joyce (McKay) Maxfield, Malad City, ID. Four Grandchildren Allen (Alexis)Day, Litchfield AZ, Kayla (Brayden) Little West Jordan, UT, Ryan Day Bountiful, UT, Brittany Day, Tooele, UT, 8 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Karen is proceeded in death by her husband Douglas J Jensen , her parents, Lawrence and LuLu Klein, a brother Donald Klein. Funeral services will be held Saturday December 9th, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at Horsley Funeral Home. A viewing for friends and family will be from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the same location. Boy Scout Troop 1776 camped overnight at the Malad Summit Forest Service cabin on December 1-2. Each Scout was able to retire a worn U.S. Flag in a special retirement ceremony. Other activities included a GPS course to locations of an 1870's

water powered saw mill and a 1906 Mill Creek Power Plant. The boys also identified different wild anima tracks and spent some time snow sledding. Tyker Hamilton won the snow shoe race. A Great Time was had by all Scouts.

Wastewater Treatment Plant

The new Wastewater Treatment Plant is very close to being ready to start up, completing Phase I of the project. The major work is all complete, but there are some small issues still being addressed. The City first started exploring issues with the old Wastewater Treatment Plant as early as 2009. In 2014 they entered into an agreement with the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), committing to address issues with the system. From that time, the City has worked closely with DEQ and their engineers, J-U-B. When the bids were received, Whitaker Construction, from Brigham City, was the low bidder. They have been exceptional to work with. Our City Superintendent has worked closely with the engineers and Whitaker this year to make sure that the new plant will be operable when turned over to the City. Watching other communities around us struggle with bringing their Wastewater Plant into compliance with DEQ, we are pleased with the quality of our product for the cost. Phase II will consist of decommissioning the old ponds. That cost is yet unknown to the city, but there were grant funds left over from Phase I that will help.

Snow Removal

If you want the snow removed from the curbside in the front of your home, you will need to move obstacles such as vehicles and trashcans so the snowplow can reach the curb. If they can’t reach the curb, they will have to plow around the obstacles. Ordinances pertaining to parking on city streets can be found on the City’s website.

Malad City Attorney

Representing Malad City as the City Attorney for the past 10+ years has been Dustin Smith. We are sad to report that Dustin will retire from his position as of December 31, 2023. He will be missed. He has been a dedicated, loyal advocate, providing legal advice to the Malad City Mayor, Council and Clerk, and we thank him for his service. The City is in the process of obtaining new legal counsel, which will be announced soon. All of us at Malad City wish our residents a very Merry Christmas and a prosperous and happy New Year! Impact Zone Public Hearing 11/21 Members of the City Council and Board of County Commissioners joined together for a public hearing on the planned Impact Zone that affects both entities. The Impact Zone is defined by the area that includes roughly a half mile outside the city limits. It is required for the city and county to revisit the Impact Zone boundaries on a regular basis in order to determine whether it still reflects the anticipated growth of the city. Present were City Councilmembers Jaime Olsen and Lance Tripp, Mayor Joan Hawkins, and Chairman Bill Lewis and Commissioner Ken Eliason from the Board of Commissioners. The Zone helps both the city and county make development decisions and regulate growth. When a property is determined to be in the Impact Zone, that property can be annexed into the city and receive city services, as well as the accompanying taxes. Until an area is officially annexed, the choice of whether to pursue city services is left to the property owner. The meeting was opened by Jaime Olsen. The hearing was designed to receive public input on the current version of the Area of Impact map generated by a committee composed of city and county officials as well as members of the public. The committee has been meeting for almost exactly a year, during which time they discussed various issues related to the implementation of the zone. The boundaries of the Area of Impact on the proposed map are fairly similar to those of the existing map, with changes to account for natural geography and established section lines. The area has not been significantly increased. After Olsen explained the purpose of the Impact Zone, the floor was then opened for public comment, following standard public hearing rules. County Commission Chairman Bill Lewis stated that “One thing that should be stressed is that we need to grow from the city out.” It was his expressed belief that the impact zone should be defined by where the city can provide water and sewer. Several property owners on the edge of the Area of Impact spoke with the committee about how the designation would affect their current property and any decisions they might make in the future. C Y

It was determined that any property which was contiguous with any parcel inside the zone would be considered as all belonging to the area of impact, as long as a connecting segment remained. Commissioner Eliason advised that the committee had tried to follow existing property and section lines as much as possible to create the clearest map. Mayor Hawkins repeated the point that anyone determined to be inside, or partially inside the area of impact could request city annexation. City Councilmember Jaime Olsen reminded the audience that any area between a property requesting annexation and the city limits would also have to be annexed. Councilmember Lance Tripp asked what the process would be for adjusting the boundaries at this point in the process. Chairman Lewis believed that such a change would require the map to be sent back to both the city and county for reconsideration. Jaime Olsen explained that until a property was annexed into the city, its taxes wouldn’t be affected. City services which are brought out to locations outside their current reach would be the responsibility of property developers seeking those services. Olsen stated that the county and city planned to revisit the map every five or so years. Jaime Olsen reiterated that if you were in the IZ and you wanted to develop, you’d have to work with the city and the county. Even in the IZ you need an acre at least. Lewis explained that the intention is for developers eventually to hook up to the city to prevent drilling excess wells. A discussion about future plans to potentially “loop” the water system to increase reliability and pressure were discussed. The proposed map was approved by the county commission at last week’s meeting, leaving the approval of the city pending before the ordinance is adopted. Once adopted, it will be publicly printed with a legal description of the property defined as the Area of Impact. The meeting was adjourned, and the next City Council meeting will be held on December 13, where the map will be approved or rejected.

By Gramma Dot We all have lots of people in our periphery who surface unexpectedly in our thoughts. Maude Call came to my mind recently from out of nowhere and left me with warm thoughts and a determination to be better. I “knew” Sister Call when I was a child. She always struck me as a kind and focused woman. I don’t think I ever had a conversation with her, but she was in my world. Her son Dee was my Uncle Thurm’s best friend. Both families lived in Salt Lake and visited Malad for Thanksgiving most years. Their kids were friends as well and so Maude’s granddaughters would hook up with us on occasion. I remember walking the railroad tracks from the Mill Stream down to the Depot with my cousins and the Call girls. We knew how to have fun in those days! I knew another of her sons, Max,

designed the high school. I think Lois, her daughter, was Miss Malad one year…if she wasn’t I thought she should have been! Anyway, in talking with friend Syliva Williams recently I learned Maude was Del’s aunt. Del is Sylvia’s husband. Del’s family lost their mother when the five boys were young and Aunt Maude stepped in to help with laundry, meals, etc. Maude herself was a widow raising several children on her own. As Sylvia and I talked, Sylvia told me Aunt Maude had a “Blue Room” that she used when she needed answers. She would go into the room and not come out until she knew what she needed to do. Well, I don’t have a “Blue Room,” but I have a green room and there are plenty of times I need answers. So, Sister Call, wherever you are, thank you for being in my world and helping me build The Good Life!

Malad Elementary School November Goals Our students have done a fantastic job during this month accomplishing their goals. We would like to accommodate them for doing this. In Kindergarten the goal was to write the numbers 1-10 without any reversals. For the 102nd time, the Malad Volunteer fire Department met to celebrate the year that was. A dinner last Friday celebrated retirements and awards, and Saturday’s raffle and fundraiser provided a chance for the volunteers and the community to let down their hair and dance. The annual tradition is one of the largest events of its type during the year, bringing the community together to celebrate the essential service provided by the valley’s firemen. This year’s Fireman of the Year was Dylan Hunt, who received the award at the celebration dinner from last year’s winner Ryon Owens. The dinner was hosted at the Dude Ranch. Retiring from the Fire Department was Ray Davis after serving for 22 years. According to Chief John Williams, that means that Davis has probably responded to over 1,000 calls over the years. His wife Paula was also recognized for her commitment to the department. Davis will continue to serve as a Fire District Commissioner. Newest firefighter Marc Esplin was introduced to the retirees. His wife Justice was on hand to take pictures at the dinner. The raffle featured a number of items including a gun safe and gift card, recliner, bell, smoker, and binoculars. The proceeds raised money to pay for needs within the depart-

The Malad and Holbrook Fire Departments are supported by the Fire District taxes, as well as the work of people like Leah Hunt and Ray Davis, who have found ways to bring funds and equipment to the station through grants and other programs. Former chiefs John Blaisdell and Zach Blaisdell have implemented various training exercises and summer training programs that also require funding. Many of the funds raised throughout the year are also

used for the large 4th of July Fireworks Show. The Gun Safe and $400 Gift Card were won by Jim Davis; the Traeger Smoker was won by Nick Hiatt; Garren Atkinson won the recliner; Julie Willie won the Dough Adams created bell, and Marla McClellan won the Vortex binoculars. Wearing our work gloves By Allison Eliason All too often, the kids end up in the feed store or hardware store with dad. As they walk up and down the aisles helping dad shop for parts or tools or equipment for the ranch, they always seem to find something that they are so sure that they need. Dad usually does a pretty good job of saying no, but if there is enough justifying the need and telling him how much they promise to use it, he slowly gives in. Some days I heartily roll my eyes at the purchase but there are some days when I nod my head with approval that it really was a good buy. It doesn’t happen very often, but there have been a few occasions that I start out with the usual sigh and eye roll but have my mind changed for me when I see there was a little wisdom to the purchase. The most recent buy was for our four year old son, a boy that just can’t stand it when dad leaves him at home. He is at that magical stage where he soaks everything in and is growing faster than this momma heart can take. With all of his siblings already in school, the house is far too quiet and helping mom with the inside chores just isn’t fun enough. And when compared to what dad does, who can blame him? Dad knows he shouldn’t leave the house without him because he knows he will have to swing around to pick him up anyway. Whatever they are doing on the ranch, our little boy wants to be in the middle of it, just like dad. If they are working in the shop, he needs his own tools. If they are working cows, he needs his own sorting stick. If they are moving cows, he needs his own 4wheeler, but finally compromises when dad says they can take turns driving his. Heading with dad on a parts run to town, he saw on the shelves the one thing he didn’t have like dad and DESPERATELY needed- gloves. And he didn’t want the pair of cheap look alike gloves. He wanted real leather gloves like dad so he could “get to work” as he said it. I usually consider buying gloves, good gloves, for a kid a bonehead move. Experience has taught me that they will last less than a week and then they will be done for. That new pair of gloves will be lost in the field or left out for the dog to chew and bury before they can be hardly worn out. It’s a better return on investment to dig a hole and put the money in the ground than to spend it on a pair

of kid’s gloves. You at least know where the money is buried and have a pretty good chance of digging it back up. Finding a long lost glove requires more than a miracle. Not to mention, that any time a kid is the proud owner of a pair of gloves, it is one more, or rather two more, things mom has to keep track of. Going out to work always starts with, “Mom, where are my gloves?” Mom tracking skills can rival any tracking device because it never depends on good service and is far more heavily motivated. Determined to avoid the potential meltdown over whatever is lost this time, a mom KNOWS how to find anything that needs tracking down. But the best way to avoid such a disaster is to not give them anything to lose in the first place. Which is why we just don’t buy gloves for kids... So you can see why my initial reaction at buying a four year old boy a pair of gloves was the heavy scoff and eye roll. With his new gloves on, my little boy hurried off after dad for whatever the last of the day held in store for them. To my surprise, both gloves came home after work and were carefully put away. The next day brought with it a promise of more work and those gloves were hurriedly put on. And brought back in for lunch, piled up by dad’s gloves while that little boy ate. And then they went out again and again. If ever they got left at home, there was always a mad dash back to the mudroom to find them because they were a crucial must have. That little boy started saying things like, “I gotta wear my gloves so I can build fence,” or “I need my gloves so I can carry those heavy woods,” or

“I can only work hard in my gloves.” Aside from noticing his cute way of saying things, I noticed how these silly gloves were doing so much more than just helping him look and feel like dad. They were empowering him to do things he hadn’t done before. They were like his Dumbo feather, giving him just the boost of confidence he needed to try something new. And he treated them with such special respect and care like they were his superpower. Before I knew it, I was nodding my head with sure approval at the purchase of those tiny leather gloves that had seemed so frivolous, but had become the means of helping grow and shape my little boy. And I wished that I could have a magic feather or little leather gloves that could help me fly to new heights. Life can be hard, even at its best. We have responsibilities, duties and expectations that can be heavy and seem impossible to carry day after day. The constant battle of the challenges we face, whether they are just short term or for the long haul, can make us wary. But maybe not if we have on our work gloves, those little, seemingly insignificant things that inspire, empower and enable. With our little work gloves on, there isn’t any work we can’t accomplish if we just believe it.

Lady Dragons win Ririe Bulldog Shootout Tournament! “We came here with a mission- to take home the championship,” Head Coach Trevor Jones told his team as they celebrated their win over Declo in the Ririe Bulldog Shootout Tournament, “And we just did that!” he finished. The Lady Dragons competed in the three day Varsity/JV tournament where, if the season goes right, they will see again at the State tournament. Malad began their tournament play by taking on The Ambrose School of Meridian. Prepared for a tough contest, the Lady Dragons came out strong, easily handling the Archers and jumping to a quick 25-12 lead in the opening quarter. Throughout the game, senior Oaklie Hebdon led the team with 20 points and 6 steals. Point guard Izzy Haycock put numbers up across the board for the Lady Dragons, adding 9 points, 6 rebounds, 7 assists, 1 steal and 1 block. Brynnlee Jones came in with 10 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 steal, helping her team defeat Ambrose, 63-42. Advancing on in the tournament bracket, the Lady Dragons took on the Firth Cougars in their Friday matchup. Having already played the Cougars in Firth, Malad knew it could be a challenging game and that they would need to play tough right from the tip off. Unfortunately, their offense had a slow start to get going as they struggled to connect with the hoop. But while they struggled to get things rolling on offense, their defense kept them in the game, taking away shooting opportunities, stealing passes and forcing the ball out of bounds. Despite their hustle on defense, Firth led at the end of the first quarter, 15-20. But something began to click as the Lady Dragons stepped back out on the floor in the second quarter. Patiently working their offense, they passed the ball around when Hebdon found herself open on the arc and drained a three pointer. On the very next possession, she hit another three pointer to help the Lady Dragons take the lead 27-26. Falling into a groove, Hebdon managed a steal to convert into an easy lay up for two points

with another shot from outside and suddenly Malad was up 34-28. Not letting their foot off the gas, the Lady Dragons continued to push the ball on offense and made some impressive stops on defense. Together the team totalled 16 steals against the Cougars, with Hallie Horsley and Haycock leading with 4 each, Hebdon with 3, Kiley Miller and Olivia Nelson 2 and Mikell Keetch with 1. Battling it out to the very end, the Lady Dragons secured the victory with a pair of free throws by Keetch, with a minute left in the game, and Nelson with just 15 seconds to go in the game, making it 62-54. With two wins behind them, the MHS girls basketball team had just one win to accomplish their goal to come out as the top team of the tournament. Coming into the games, they knew Declo would be a tough contender with their impressive shooters, strong defense and fast paced game. But they also knew they were up for the challenge. The Lady Dragons were first to score as Horsley put up a jumper from outside the corner on the first MHS possession. Taking the ball down the floor, Declo responded with a basket of their own, demonstrating from the start how the game was going to be. The Hornets pulled ahead for just a moment at the start of the game, 3-6, when Hebdon drove into the key to put one off the glass with what would be her go-to move of the game to put points on the board for Malad. Coming down the floor again, Haycock found Hebdon on the deep corner after an excellent screen from Nelson leaving her wide open for the three point shot to take the lead. Both teams brought an intensity to the game, making it also a very physical and aggressive game. Nelson would work all night, battling it out under the hoop to put up shots for the Lady Dragons, totalling up 13 points, scoring on over half of her attempts. She would also lead the game in rebounds, grabbing 8 offensive rebounds and 6 defensive. Her counterpart on the block, Horsley, would add another 8 points, 5 rebounds and

The Malad Dragons boys basketball team is on the court and into their regular season games, starting out with “a great week of basketball,” shared Head Coach Zach Beutler. The team filled their opening week with three big games, playing teams, programs and coaches that are some of the best in the state for years to come. Coach Beutler says, “We intentionally filled our schedule with stout teams. We want to compete against the best programs possible.” The Dragons started their week out as they hosted the Ririe Bulldogs, the reigning 6th district champions with an excellent staff and head coach in Jordan Hamilton. Malad had a slow start to the game, taking some time to work passed the first game jitters and settling into their rhythm. Throughout the game they worked to whittle down the early 2-15 deficit they found themselves in to eventually take a one point lead half way through the 4th. As the minutes ticked down, Ririe regained the lead as they were able to connect with basket while the Dragon’s shots fell short. Battling it out the very end, the MHS team refused to quit until the final buzzer, falling 55-65. The following night, the team traveled to Firth to take on the well established 2A powerhouse Cougars, led by Scott Adams - who holds the 2A record with the most state titles. Because of a pregame technical, the Cougars started the game out on the free throw line and with possession of the ball instead of the usual tipoff. Despite the rough start to the game, the Dragons came out tough to start the game, tying it up in just a few possessions.

It didn’t take long for the offense to find something working for them, a simple drive and dish. Over and over again they forced the defense to step in to block the drive, leaving a man open on the outside, ready to hit the shot. When the Cougar defense didn’t collapse in to help, the Dragons drove the open lane to hit the lay up. In the opening quarter, Braylin Tripp had six drives to the basket that would result in a lay up, dish out for open shot or a foul on the drive, taking Malad to the free throw line. After a hard fought first quarter, the Dragons were trailing by just one point, 15-16. Malad came into the seconds quarter with great intensity, but the shots just wouldn’t fall for them. Instead of slipping into a slump, the team doubled down on defense, making it all the more challenging for Firth to convert offense into points and finding a little magic in the hustle to score off the transition. Tripp intercepted a pass on defense, taking it down to the key where he bounce passed it into Ben Peterson on the block for an easy lay in. Zack Richardson came in for a weak side rebound, hustling the ball back into Dragon territory. He dished it off to Carter Carey for the shot which bounced off, but was picked up by forward Ryan Hubbard. Hubbard put up the rebound for two points and added a third as he hit the free throw after getting fouled on the shot. On the other end of the floor, Hubbard came up from the block, anticipating the pass and getting the steal, passing it off to Richardson for a fast break. He burned it down the court, beating the defense, allowing

2 blocked shots from the post. Malad did well to play a strategic game against the Hornets, both offensively and defensively. As Declo was playing an aggressive defense, the Lady Dragons used that to their advantage, driving into the defense to draw fouls to put them on the free throw line. Leading from the line was Haycock, putting up an impressive 12 for 16 shots at the line, scoring all her points of the night on bonus shots. Defensively, the Lady Dragons put up a tough zone defense, keying in on Declo’s outside shooter as well as denying the pass into the high post, the pivotal point of their offense. With quick movement, good communication and fast recovery, the Hornets were contested on nearly every shot. As they had predicted it would be, the championship game was a fight to the very end. In just under a minute, both teams put up seven points, Declo desperate to pull ahead and Malad not willing to give up their hard fought lead. The Lady Dragons came out with the win as the final buzzer rang out with the score at Malad 55, Declo 51. Coach Jones shared about the tour-

nament, saying, “The tournament was a great opportunity to play teams from all over the state. It definitely was a testing experience to play against several teams that went to state last year and I’m sure will be there again this year. Starting off against the Ambrose Archers, a state contender last year, gave us a great opportunity to play against the western conference, then a battle against up and coming Firth team from the nuclear conference and then to finish the championship game with another last year state team that returned its whole team from the canyon conference. “Our girls are relentless. It is so fun to just watch them compete. With their tenacity, they have a real chance every time they step on the court. The girls believe in each other and cheer for each other. On the court or on the bench they lift each other up. #Family” The Lady Dragons play at home in the upcoming week, hosting the Firth Cougars on Tuesday, December 5 and then the North Fremont Huskies on Saturday, December 9.

Malad surged through the third quarter, making plays happen on offense and converting their tough defense into scoring opportunities on the other end. They put on repeat their rebound-drive-and-dish, coupled with their fast break layups to outscore FIrth, 23-17 in the third quarter to expand their lead. Not faltering in the final quarter, Malad continued to push the Cougars until the clock ran out. They patiently worked the ball around the outside, passing until they found the right opportunity. Peterson found the open lane, driving around and over the defense for another basket. Richardson spotted up in the deep, right corner to hit the three, late in the fourth quarter. Despite the Dragon’s play, Firth wasn’t backing down, and found a way to climb back within one point with just a minute on the clock. With the Cougars bringing an intense full court press, Malad had to bring their next level game if they were to pull out the win. Even against their strategic calls and plays, the Dragons held their own, capitalizing on crucial free throws and shooting opportunities as it came down the wire. In the end, it was the defense that won the game, playing such an intense defense that the Cougars couldn’t even get off a shot, without committing any fouls as the final seconds ticked down to end the game, 55-52, in favor of Malad.

Talking about the win, Coach Beutler shared, “Our boys played very well against their long athletic well coached teams. Getting a win on Firth’s floor is a huge feat.” The Dragons finished off their opening week at home as they played the Grace Grizzlies another intense, skilled and well coached team. The games proved even more challenging as the MHS team had multiple players sit the games out as they suffered from injuries and illness. After four, long, hardfought quarters, Malad just couldn’t hang on to the lead and fell behind by just two point, finishing the game 5153. Beutler said, “We had several players down with illness - but they battled hard nonetheless and had a couple of opportunities to take the win - but came up just short. We had some mental mistakes throughout the game that we are confident the boys will fix. Overall we were very pleased with the way they played and the progress they are showing. “We couldn’t be more happy with where we are after week one. The boys have prepared and performed in a way that has put them in a position to be a couple of possessions away from a 3-0 first week.” The Dragons will travel to Ririe for a three day tournament with their opening game against Teton who happens to be the biggest 3A school in the state and on paper, look to be the best team in the tournament. The coaches and team are excited for the challenge as they relish the opportunity to compete against the best.

MHS WRESTLING

The Dragon wrestling team started their season with a great weekend of wrestling at the Dahlke Duals in American Falls. The tournament hosts 20 teams from all over Idaho. The Dragons wrestled 9 tough teams over the two days and walked away with 9 team wins and 4 undefeated wrestlers. On Friday Malad wrestled against last years 2a state champions New Plymouth and got the win 46-36. “This was a huge win for us, it let us see how we measure up against the best in the state.” Wrestling several 4a and 3a teams the Dragons saw plenty of tough matches and did an amazing job against everyone of them. Four Malad wrestlers went undefeated at the tournament, Jack Willie, Kimball Carter, Drake Morrison and Lex Driskel. With the way the tournament is set up each team takes their varsity team to compete and any JV wrestlers they bring are put on teams that are needing to fill that weight class. Malad’s JV wrestlers did some great wrestling and got a lot of experience over the weekend. Josh Davis coached the JV wrestlers and was very impressed with the way they wrestled throughout the entire tournament. “All of our JV wrestlers did very well despite wrestling in a very competitive Varsity tournament. We have a lot to work on but we also have a lot to be proud of. Every wrestler fought hard and learned a lot along the way. It was a great bonding experience for our team and also for our wrestlers to work with other teams and take part

On Saturday, December 2, the Boys Basketball team played against the Grace Grizzlies. To start off the night, C-Team played their best and worked as a team. Sophomore, Boston Burbidge, said, “We should’ve won.” While interviewing Hudson Daniels, he said, Ky Willie shot great from the three-point line. The JV team fought hard but couldn’t pull through and lost 33-30. The Varsity team came out with a bang and Senior, Braylen Tripp, said, “The game was good. It’s not just one person making all the shots, we’ve played as a team. We haven’t won all our games, but we’re heading in the right direction and doing better than previous years.” This weekend there is a tournament. The season is looking great for all of our teams!

Girls Basketball By: Olivia Nelson and Purity Miller This past week the Lady Dragons C-team played against Mountain Crest. They went to Logan on Thursday, November 21. They won their game by at least 30 points. Then on Tuesday, November 28 Mountain Crest traveled to Malad to play against our C-team. This game was closer than the other game but we ended up winning by 10 points. On Thursday, November 30th the Junior Varsity and Varsity traveled to Ririe for the annual 2023 Ririe Bulldog Shootout. ished. Malad played great the whole game and won 63-42. Both teams made it to the Championship Semi Finals which we played on Friday, December 1st. The JV played first against the Firth Cougars. The first half was rough but we fought back in the second quarter and beat the Firth Cougars. The JV moved on to the Championship game. The Variety also played against the Firth Cougars, it was a close game the whole time and we ended up winning 62-54. Both teams made it to the Championship game which was played on Saturday, December 2nd. The JV played first against the Ririe Bulldogs. The first half was a rough one and in the second half we came back but barely lost. The JV took home the Runner Up Trophy. Varsity took on the Declo Hornets in the Championship game. It was a close game with a lot of ups and downs. With a close game towards the end the Lady Dragons ended up getting the win 55-51. The Varsity now has a record of 6-0! This next week the Lady Dragons take on the Firth Cougars on Tuesday, December 5th at home, and on the North Fremont Huskies on Saturday, December 8th.

Drama Club Officers By: Aubree Palmer & Katie Coatney The 2023-2024 Drama Club officers have been announced! In their last meeting, each drama club member voted on other electoral picks for the officers. The outcome is Aubree Palmer: President; Maren Sperry; Vice President; Secretary: Adi Schow;

Public Relations: Madison Alvarez; and Treasurer Doris Young. When asked about her stance on assuming the position, President Aubree Palmer remarked, “I am extremely excited to take the drama club to new heights and experiences!” Excited and ready for the year's endeavors, the new Drama Club officers are thankful for the chance to serve on the council and bring new and exciting memories to the Malad High School Drama Club members.

Girls Wrestling Article By: Bella McCullough and Kaycee Venable All of our Lady Dragon Wrestlers had a tournament this weekend from the first of December to the second. Everyone did amazing, especially since more than half of the girls are very new to the team, and it was their first match ever. The Lady Dragon’s first day was spent in Grace with about five-six other teams. The girls ended up taking third place overall, and all of the girls ended up getting at least one win each, with almost everyone getting a medal. The second day was spent in American Falls(AF) with the boys wrestling team wrestling that day as well. Many girls did great but we all had a lot of good teams with great competition. “There were some good wrestlers there today, and the girls learned some good lessons,” Coach Kade Price said after the day at AF. The girls are all super excited to wrestle in the upcoming tournament this weekend.
