Accident at LaGuardia runway claims 2 lives
Sgt. Call's family joined him on Monday at the County Commission meeting, where he received the "Life Saving Award."

Sgt. Kolby Call presented with “Life Saving Award” for actions at Alexander On Monday, Caribou County Deputy Kolby Call was honored during the County Commissioners meeting with a “Life Saving Award” recognizing his heroism on March 8, when he responded to an emergency call at Alexander reservoir. Through his actions, Call was able to save the life of one of the individuals who had fallen through the ice, and provide a fighting chance to the other, who ultimately passed away as a result of the incident. Sheriff Mabey spoke to the commissioners about Deputy Call, and read from his official commendation. Call’s family was able to be in attendance for the presentation. Sherffi Mabey stated, “Sometimes we have events happen which don't necessarily turn out with the best end,
mainly because of the way things are written in the in the sand, so to speak. And we recently had an incident which was a sad incident, but it was a happy incident at the same time. And the reason we got the happy part was because of the actions of one of the Caribou County Sheriff's Office deputies who stepped up and saw a problem, moved forward, and dealt with it. A lot of times we hear about “defunding the police”, but if we don't have individuals like members of the Sheriff’s Office around, things could be a lot worse. And this morning I want to recognize one of those deputies that works for the county, deputy Kolby Call. We had an incident where two
individuals fell through the ice out at Alexander Reservoir on March 8. The ice was receding fast. They were visiting our county, didn't necessarily know that the dangers that were involved, and they found themselves in a bad situation. Sergeant Call was the first responder to get on scene, and acted immediately. His actions, in my belief, saved an individual's life that day, a very selfless act by Sergeant Call. So I am going to award Sergeant Call this morning a Life Saving award and I'm going to read you the citation of commendation in regards to that.” Speaking to the commissionSGT. KOLBY CALL On Page 10
“Just Another High School Play” at SSHS starts Saturday The Soda Springs drama department is staging a production of “Just Another High School Play,” which will run Saturday the 28th and Monday the 30th at 7:00 p.m. at the SSHS Auditorium. The play is a humorous exploration of theatre through the ages, and involves improv. The play opens with a musical number that sets the leitmotifs into place, with “We Apologize in Advance”—a scripted song that apologizes for the improv nature of the play. As you might imagine, the play contains a lot of fourth-wall breaking and tongue in cheek observations about the world of the theater – or “theatre” in this case – as well as history, politics, and a range of other topics. It takes walking a fine line to create a sense of spontaneity in a play that is mostly scripted, but at the early rehearsal we were able to sit in on, the parts were falling into place nicely. The run-through gave director Kimberly Mumford a chance to fine-tune the blocking, lighting, and sound with the production crew, and speak with the actors about their scenes as they tackled them. Rehearsing for a production is an extensive and intensive
process, especially since several of the actors are also involved in other school activities that require a delicate scheduling process in order to bring the whole group together. During the course of the play, a number of theater genres are explained and parodied, including tragedy, melodrama, realism, surrealism, and more. Conventions in the theater, like improv and men playing women’s roles for laughs, are also targets of the humor. The play is essentially a series of vignettes, which are connected by the characters of two narrators that introduce the segments. The cast rotates through the various scenes, giving the actors a chance to employ a variety of tones and approaches to the sketches. In addition to the demands that come along with memorizing the words, timing, and blocking of the dialogic elements, the play is primarily a musical, and therefore also requires the actors to memorize the melodies and phrasing of the many musical numbers. Spring is a great time around the valley for musicals, and put “Just Another High School Play” on you calendar for Saturday, Monday, or both for an entertaining night!

An Air Canada Express regional jet collided with a fire truck on the runway at New York’s LaGuardia Airport when while landing. The aircraft, a CRJ-900 operated by Jazz Aviation, had arrived from Montreal carrying 72 passengers and four crew members. The collision killed both the pilot and co-pilot, as the front section of the aircraft was severely damaged. Dozens of passengers and several others, including emergency responders in the vehicle, were injured, with some requiring hospitalization. The fire truck had been responding to a separate incident involving another aircraft, and early reports suggest that miscommunication in air traffic control may have allowed both the plane and the vehicle onto the same runway at the same time. Audio recordings indicate attempts were made to stop the vehicle before impact, but they were unsuccessful. The crash led to the temporary closure of LaGuardia Airport, causing widespread flight cancellations and delays. Authorities, including the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration, launched an investigation to determine the exact cause and assess safety procedures.

The 2026 Men’s March Madness Sweet 16 features a competitive mix of powerhouse programs and emerging contenders. The teams include the Michigan Wolverines, Arizona Wildcats, Duke Blue Devils, Purdue Boilermakers, Houston Cougars, Illinois Fighting Illini, St. John’s Red Storm, and UConn Huskies. They are joined by the Texas Longhorns, Iowa Hawkeyes, Nebraska Cornhuskers, Arkansas Razorbacks, Alabama Crimson Tide, Iowa State Cyclones, Michigan State Spartans, and Auburn Tigers. Texas and Iowa are the closest teams this year to Cinderella teams, in case you are interested.
Medicaid Work Bill
Idaho lawmakers are advancing a bill that would require certain Medicaid recipients to work or meet activity requirements starting in 2027. The proposal, House Bill 913, has cleared a House committee and is headed to the full Idaho House for consideration. The bill aims to apply work requirements to able-bodied adults enrolled in Medicaid expansion, which currently covers tens of thousands of Idahoans. Supporters argue the policy would promote self-sufficiency and reduce long-term government spending. The plan includes a phased rollout, with early reviews to give enrollees time to meet requirements before enforcement begins. Under the proposal, participants would need to complete at least 80 hours per month of work, education, or community service, with exemptions for groups such as pregnant individuals, caregivers, students, and people with disabilities. Those unable to demonstrate compliance could lose coverage. Opponents argue the policy could create bureaucratic hurdles and lead to eligible people losing health coverage due to paperwork issues rather than lack of work. Estimates suggest thousands of Idahoans could be removed from Medicaid if the bill becomes law.
