LOOKING BACK:
TOP STORIES FOR 2020 By Becky Ginos | becky.g@davisjournal.com
COVID took over 2020 DAVIS COUNTY—Looking back on 2020 the pandemic overshadowed everything. From schools and businesses closing to masks and social distancing. Everyone hunkered down, working from home and only going out for essentials. Toilet paper flew off the shelves as did sanitizing wipes and other grocery items. Throw in an earthquake and a major wind storm and it was pretty much the craziest year ever. The first death from COVID-19 was in Davis County in March and the numbers climbed over the next few months throughout the state. Schools also closed in March, moving student learning online. Graduations, weddings and other major events were cancelled in an effort to stem the tide. As summer approached and case counts started to decline, restrictions loosened, businesses slowly reopened with limited capacity and people started to venture out in the “new normal.” The Davis School District cautiously made plans to reopen in the fall, making the announcement in July that students would return to class as usual. However, just a few weeks later, the district modified that plan to a hybrid schedule of two days of in-person learning with the other three days remote. Many parents were divided over the decision with both sides holding protests at school board meetings and making passionate pleas for their positions. School started in August on the hybrid schedule but Singer Alex Boye performs for frontline workers at Lakeview Hospital. Homeowner finds unwelcome visitor By Becky Ginos|becky.g@davisjournal.com
BOUNTIFUL—Kory Jasperson’s property abuts Mueller Park canyon so he’s used to seeing wildlife – but not coyotes. “I came out the front door with my 45 pound lab/heeler mix puppy,” said Jasperson. “We were standing in the driveway and it (coyote) was sitting on the hill behind us, my dog was staring. I chased it off my property and it ran off toward other houses.” Jasperson also owns a small dog. “It’s a 15-year-old Lhasa Apso,” he said. “If we let it outside and a coyote is in the area, it (coyote) could easily jump the fence. That’s one of the reasons I chased it off. I called the DWR but they said they don’t take reports on coyotes unless something happens.” The Jaspersons moved from Tennessee to Utah about six months ago. “We had lots of coyotes there,” he said.
“We abutted state property in Tennessee as well and we were by a lake. We could hear them howling all night. They were in big packs.” Jasperson said they see deer most days. “We also see turkeys but there are
less as it’s gotten colder.” His face off with the coyote doesn’t bother him, he enjoys living in the hills. “I like it here,” said Jasperson. “I’m not all that concerned about it. My lab can take care of her own.” l
Davis County Correctional Facility sees first cases of COVID-19 FARMINGTON—The Davis County Correctional Facility reported its first confirmed case of COVID-19 on Dec. 18 after an individual presented with symptoms and a rapid test came back positive. The unit where the inmate was housed is one of three pods. All of the other individuals in that unit received a rapid test and 18 tested positive. The Davis County Health Department helped test all 375 inmates and the positive case count went from 18 to 19, according to the Davis County Sheriff’s Office. As of Dec. 19, the numbers in-
creased to 29 positive inmates, one positive employee, two symptomatic inmates and four exposed inmates that had no symptoms. All the individuals are from the housing unit where the exposure originated. Each group was moved to separate units and the employee is on isolation, the release said. The jail has 375 inmates and from the beginning of the pandemic, the facility has been able to contain the virus up to this point. “We have been steadfast in our efforts to prevent the spread of coronavirus throughout our facility, taking a
variety of precautions and implementing multiple procedures to reduce risk and possible exposure,” Sheriff Kelly V. Sparks said in a statement. “Given the amount of time that COVID-19 has been in the community, the fact that this is the first time for those in our care and custody to test positive demonstrates the steps we have taken are working. At the same time, this incident reminds us that we all must remain vigilant in our precautionary and sanitary measures, in the workplace and elsewhere.” l

ob Dylan just sold his songwriting catalog for over $300 million. I cannot compete with him, but I can present the 2020 Cyclops Christmas Carol (sung to the melody of “Away in a Manger”). Utahns were voting. The election was firm/ Ben McAdams was denied an additional term/ Democrats lost the landslide they sought/ Burgess Owens said Ben was a Communist plot. Sean Reyes denied the election was fair/ Trump had him scurrying hither and there Saying ballots were counted after the date/ Nevada told Sean, “Get out of our state!” Mike Lee chided Facebook and democracy With broad support from his right-wing posse/ But Senator Romney was much more restrained.
“Thank goodness!” I said, “at least one is still sane.” Herbert asked Utahns to stay in their homes/ Said COVID spreads when good Utahns roam/ But Utah County students, all hale and hearty, Despite the pandemic, continued to party. “Stay six feet apart,” says Dr. Dunn. “If not, the virus will continue its run.” But convincing the spreaders is no easy task/ They think it’s their right to not wear a mask. Church meetings were held remotely with Zoom/ Disappointed members wanted church to resume/ But some faithful members felt no such traumas/ They enjoyed attending services in their pajamas. The holiday will come, then it will fade/ Credit card charges must then be repaid/ Utahns agree, shedding many a tear “2020 is gone. What a terrible year.”
Life & Laughter: Making the grade The opinions stated in this article are solely those of the author and not of The Davis Journal

hen my kids were little, I did a bit of substitute teaching. After I accidentally threw an encyclopedia and flipped a desk over, I realized teaching elementary school probably wasn’t for me. Teachers are comprised of strong stuff. The molten lava that flows through their veins gives them courage and an unbreakable gaze. A skeleton PERI KINDER made of graphene (200 Life & Laughter times stronger than steel) keeps them steady and protects their hearts. And those hearts beat a consistent tempo that opens doors to new worlds and encourages students to find their own rhythm. But teachers are exhausted. I attended Viewmont Elementary during the 1900s, where teachers were the top of the food chain. I worshiped the good ones, feared the difficult ones, and loathed the mean ones. I remember the “trip” our kindergarten class took to Hawaii where we ate coconut and learned the hula. And the teacher who caught us eating snowballs, so she melted snow to show us the dirt and grime. (I haven’t eaten a snowball in more than 45 years.) Or the teacher who shamed me for not knowing the word “chandelier.”

School was where I learned social skills. Okay, I learned them poorly, but I did learn some. I interacted with people my age where we talked about our favorite TV shows, what we had for dinner and whether my crush winked at me or had a tic. Today, students feel lost. My 8-year-old grandson started the school year online, changed to in-person learning, then went back online. He might enjoy hanging out with his mom, grand-
ma, and little demon of a sister, but he misses his friends. Imagine trying to learn long division on a Zoom call. I couldn’t even learn it in person. Or imagine hosting a virtual call for a class of first graders who have the attention span of a meatball. My mom thought education was vital, but if she had to supervise online learning for me and my four siblings, she would have sold us to the circus. Teachers are struggling. Kids are
struggling. Parents are struggling. If we’ve learned one thing this crappy year, it’s that superheroes walk among us. Healthcare workers and winemakers are tied for the top spot on my list, with teachers, students, and parents finishing a close second by demonstrating unprecedented resilience. Many kids are failing this year, but are they really? Can you fail when a global pandemic changes the rules? When teachers adapt daily to shifting conditions? Can you fail when parents work full-time jobs at home while staying on top of online assignments and hybrid schedules? Teachers are a mighty mix of educator/guidance counselor/cheerleader/cruise director, and this year their creativity and patience has been tested. It brings to mind my husband’s favorite quote, “Looks like I picked the wrong [year] to stop sniffing glue.” This is a thank you to the teachers who work with my grandchildren. The teachers who are innovative and kind. The teachers who show up like a boss and get to work. This is also a thank you to the students who have proven to be flexible and strong. They’re all doing the best they can as they watch adults try to figure everything out. Maybe we write this school year off; maybe it’s not the year to learn geometry or teach Latin. Perhaps it’s the year we value kindness, connection, and self-care for everyone involved. I promise, there’ll be much less encyclopedia throwing and desk flipping.

less than two months in, the board voted to bring elementary students back four days a week with Friday as a remote day. Secondary schools were also scheduled to return on the four-day model a week after elementaries. However, the board later determined that it would be disruptive to switch in the middle of a semester for high schools and junior highs so they voted to push the return to four days until the end of the semester on Nov. 2. Again, both teachers and parents were upset by the decision to move from the hybrid model, citing safety concerns, but ultimately the board stayed with their decision. As secondary schools returned to class, high schools saw a spike in cases, forcing all of the high schools in Davis County to move into soft closure at one time or another. Soon, some junior highs and elementary schools followed. The board made the decision during the Dec. 4 meeting to continue the four-day model for the remainder of the school year, maintaining the best place for students is in the classroom. The case numbers have continued to climb over the last few weeks prompting Gov. Gary Herbert to implement a mandatory mask mandate. Many people miss sharing a smile behind the mask but the roll out of a vaccine last week gave everyone a ray of hope. According to the Davis County Health Department as of last Friday, there have been 21,314 cases of COVID, with 456 hospitalized and 76 deaths. The pandemic has taken away so much but it has also strengthened relationships and a sense of community as everyone fights together to battle the virus. Many look to 2021 to be a better year.
The fight for social justice Tom Haraldsen On the afternoon and evening of May 30, downtown Salt Lake City took on a look like never before. It began peacefully enough that afternoon, when demonstrators for the Black Lives Matter movement held a rally at the Utah State Capitol. There were speeches, and many carried signs expressing the need for social justice. The organizers’ efforts were to simply hold a public event where their voices could be heard. It was similar to demonstrations and rallies being held in cities across America as a nation raised its voices in ire after the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis. Hours later, even as BLM members and organizers had left the area, hundreds of unaffiliated protesters started their own uprising – causing damage at the Capitol and at Library Square in Salt Lake City

once they marched down State Street. Police officers dressed in riot gear intervened, one police vehicle was overturned and lit on fire, UTA bus stations were damaged, streets and buildings were painted with graffiti, and eventually several arrests were made. When the riots got out of hand, a valley-wide call went out that officers needed assistance. “I’ve never heard that in 22 years,” said Capt. Taylor West, Patrol Division Commander for the Davis County Sheriff’s Office whose team went downtown to help. “That’s the scariest thing I’ve done as a police officer,” he said. “Protestors were lining up throwing bats at us.” For North Salt Lake resident Kenny Akers, who was driving downtown that afternoon, it gave him a chance to intervene when he helped deescalate a potential looting event at a convenience store on 400 South. He saw an angry group coming near the store and calmly talked them out of causing more damage or looting. He has spoken on the need for peaceful inter-
ventions in the fight for social justice ever since. On June 19, hundreds of Davis County residents met at Bountiful City Park in a “Friends for Justice” rally. Again, some came with signs expressing messages of hope. They listened to a local band and heard from a number of speakers, including Pat Oberg, a long-time teacher in the Davis School District who spoke on the importance of people working and getting along together. The crowd then formed a line and marched peacefully up 400 North, along Main Street to 1000 North, and then back down 200 West to the park.
Windstorm causes immense damage in county Tom Haraldsen Davis County residents have grown to be very familiar with what we call the “East Winds,” those winds that whip down
through the canyons, form cloud “covers” over the peaks, often topple trees and fences and usually ruin signage on businesses. Still, the storm that came through on Sept. 8 was among the strongest in recorded history for the county. The storm itself began to subside by late that day, but over the course of five days, through Sept. 12, an all-hands-ondeck effort that involved municipalities from Weber to Utah Counties (and beyond) helped local officials with massive cleanups, restorations and repairs. Damage estimates from the storm were in the millions. More than 100 power poles were downed among cities in the county, hundreds of trees were blown over, and there was so much debris left on city streets and in residents’ yards that a collaborative effort was necessary to haul it away to the county landfills. Bountiful City Power director Allen Johnson called fellow municipal power company leaders asking for assistance. The response was immediate and phenomenal. Logan, Lehi, Payson, Spanish Fork, Springville, Provo, Murray and even St. George sent trucks and personnel to help with the cleanup. Top Engineering LLC (a contractor for traffic control) and Hunt Electric also assisted in the effort to get power back on to thousands of homes and businesses that were without it, some for as long as three or four days. Landfills worked with the cities as well to help with disposal of the debris. Again, communities such as Park City, Saratoga Springs, West Point, Orem, Lehi, Cedar Hills and Clinton provided trucks and personnel to help with the cleanup. City leaders said this storm caused much more damage than the last large wind event in 2011, which occurred in December when many trees had shed their leaves, were lighter and thus less prone to being toppled. Also, in September, many lawns and gardens were still being watered, making the grounds softer and more vulnerable for trees and large plants. Another victim of the storm was business signage. Even nearly four months after the storm, many backlit signs in front of businesses are yet to be repaired. Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported from the Great Windstorm of 2020.

tures soared to more than 100 degrees on a Saturday, more than 30 people showed up to help put down a third of the sod in the complex. Others have helped with landscaping projects as well. The initial construction’s fundraising efforts garnered well over $1 million. take a closer look. Bountiful High Principal Aaron Hogge formed a committee made up of parents, students, Native Americans and other stakeholders to listen to all sides of the issue. As part of the discussion, two listening sessions were held, giving the public a chance to weigh in. After several months of consideration, Hogge announced in December that the mascot would be retired after the graduating class of 2021. “My whole goal is to rally students together in unity,” said Hogge. “It kind of came to our attention in the summer and we received direction from the Superintendent and the school board to examine the use of the Indian face and a B with a feather as a mascot.” The Braves mascot will remain for the 2020/2021 school year and in the coming months a new mascot will be chosen, he said. “After 70 wonderful years rallying behind the Braves – it’s time to look at a new name.”

of both local and out-of-town residents. And officials still plan on holding a larger ceremony on Memorial Day 2021. A committee of volunteers from the area has served during every facet of the park’s construction, from initial design to the laying of granite pavers with the names of servicemen and women. Chris Simonsen, chairman of the Bountiful Veterans Park Board of Directors and a leader of the effort from the beginning, still gets emotional when talking about the park and what it means to those who’ve served. “I think back to May 12, 1969, the day I boarded an aircraft for basic training,” he recalled. “And I remember coming back home before I began my service. A lot of veterans feel that we were so blessed to come back. It took more than three years from start of the conception to completion of this park, and it’s perfect – peaceful, quiet and in the heart of the city.” An example of the volunteer effort that went into completing the park was the laying of sod. Last summer, as tempera-
Ice ribbon ushers in Bountiful Town Square Tom Haraldsen The site of ice skaters sailing over a smooth glass-like surface in downtown Bountiful may have seemed unusual, but certainly no more than spotting a Zamboni machine! Now, you can see both thanks to the opening of the Bountiful Ice Ribbon that was formally dedicated at the Bountiful Town Square on Dec. 5. Mayor Randy Lewis was joined by city council members and other local dignitaries to cut the ribbon and usher in the ice ribbon, a 7,000 square foot ice skating venue that curls around the south end of the square. Lewis said the ceremony marked “the true beginning of Bountiful Town Square.” The square culminates a two-plus year process of construction on the site of the old Stoker School. Once that building was razed three years ago, officials began in earnest to design and create the new square that the city calls “a gathering place for families, and a generator for downtown businesses.” The ice ribbon was a collaborative effort between Bountiful City and the South Davis Recreation District.

Bountiful Veterans Park opens to public Tom Haraldsen Nov. 11 was Veterans Day, but also a cold, wet morning and in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. A grandiose ceremony had been planned for the opening of the Bountiful Veterans Park adjacent to city hall, but those plans had to be changed. That did not mitigate or lessen the significance of the amazing park. The park is a labor of love – completely funded through private donations and built largely with volunteer effort – and a fitting tribute to many Davis residents who’ve served in the U.S. military. It was dedicated in a small ceremony that morning and has already been visited by scores
“For any project like this to be completed, it takes vision and work, and then the meshing of design and construction,” Lewis said. “This could not have happened without the combined efforts of the city and the recreation district. It is an extension of the great ice-skating arena they operate at the South Davis Recreation Center.” The ice ribbon is managed by the SDRD, with staff operating a skate rental facility onsite. Reservations must be made in advance to skate on the ribbon, at least for now. You can do so on the rec center website at https://southdavisrecreation. com/. In the spring and summer, other elements of the square will also open for use, including a recirculating stream that runs through the area, an outside amphitheater for small concerts and other performances, and more. Long-time residents will also be happy to know that the large sycamore trees on the north side of the square were preserved when the old Stoker School was razed.
Skaters of any age or skill level are invited to enjoy the ice ribbon at Bountiful Town Square.
Becky Ginos CENTERVILLE—A retired Davis County Sheriff’s Deputy Sheriff/Paramedic and a Salt Lake man were killed when the experimental airplane they were in went down near Legacy Parkway in Centerville on June 25. Lt. Jason Sorensen, 47, died June 29 after undergoing treatment for severe burns sustained in the crash. Andre Kostrzewa, 72, who owned the plane was also killed. Centerville police responded just before 1 p.m. to a report of a plane crash west of Legacy at 1950 North. Witnesses said it was losing altitude and made a hard bank then went into the ground. Two bystanders ran to pull the men out of the aircraft and suffered minor burns and smoke inhalation. Sorensen and Kostrzewa

Truck accident causes significant damage Becky Ginos BOUNTIFUL—Several people were injured when a truck came careening down 400 North and slammed into multiple cars and took out a power pole, leaving parts of the city without power. The accident happened Dec. 10 just before 9 a.m. at the intersection of 400 North and 400 East. The truck was traveling at a high rate of speed when it hit two cars and then plowed into several parked cars. “That pole was one of our main transmission lines,” said Bountiful Power & Light Director Allen Johnson. “It covers roughly from 400 North to 1800 South on the east side. We had to reroute that. It probably took about 30 minutes to isolate and get the power back on.” The truck also took out the traffic controller (signal). “It exploded and the pedestal it’s on so we’ll have to put in a new one,” Johnson said. The accident injured four people including the driver of the truck. Three people were treated and released and the fourth was in serious but stable condition after the incident. “It caused extensive damage across a wide area,” said Bountiful Police Lt. Dave Edwards. “The collision with parked cars and the curb eventually stopped the dump truck.” Edwards said the cause of the accident is still under investigation. “The driver indicated the brakes went out as he was coming

Cannabis pharmacy opens in West Bountiful Becky Ginos WEST BOUNTIFUL—After being named by the state as one of a handful of pharmacies allowed to sell medical cannabis, WholesomeCo petitioned West Bountiful City to open its shop in the Carr Printing building at 580 W. 100 North. The company also applied for a permit for the cultivation and processing of cannabis for medicinal purposes in the same location. The petition for the pharmacy was approved amid concerns from surrounding businesses. “More and more major tenants like clothing and grocery stores are expressing concern for these types of uses,” said John Thackeray, owner of Thackeray Company who developed and manages the Gateway Crossing project that borders the Carr building. “Major retailers that we lease to are in opposition to expanded uses. I think we could lose tenants.” Lloyd Carr, president of Carr Printing no longer owns the building but is still leasing space there. “We lost big contracts with
schools and a lot of printing for events, programs and mailers that were all cancelled due to COVID,” he said. “It wiped out a large portion of our business but we’re still in the majority (of space) here. We sold off some of the equipment we don’t have enough volume for but we’re still in business.” Carr expressed concern over the pharmacy coming in. “I’m not sure it’s the best use of the building,” he said. “It doesn’t really fit in here.” Despite those concerns, WholesomeCo is now open for business and has remodeled the entrance into the building.
Two other local ballot issues gained some publicity. In Bountiful, voters approved a general obligation bond for construction of a new park at the site of the old Washington Elementary, and in Kaysville voters defeated a proposal to bring in a citywide fiber system for the Internet. Incumbents were elected to other seats at the state and school board levels. Voter turnout was huge – 174,544 ballots were cast in Davis County, representing 90.51 percent of registered voters.
Elections Tom Haraldsen There were no real surprises in this year’s general elections in Davis County. As usual, Republican candidates won all of the partisan races. One change will come in Congress, where Blake Moore was elected to take the place of Rep. Rob Bishop, who stepped down after 18 years serving from the 1st Congressional District. Moore had previously won a four-way race for the Republican nomination, then defeated Democrat Darren Perry in the general election.

Children ‘stuff the truck’ for a good cause By Becky Ginos|becky.g@davisjournal.com
KAYSVILLE—This year Santa came in the form of elementary school children. Instead of stuffing stockings, students at Kaysville Elementary “Stuffed the Truck” with toys, food, personal hygiene items and other essentials for those in need. “The need is more great than it has ever been before,” said PTA president Stephanie Crimm. “We didn’t want to not do it for the community. We met with Open Doors and they said there was a huge need for infant toys.” There were three ways parents and students could help, she said. “First, they could donate a toy, second, personal hygiene items and third parents could donate money that would be used to provide
Christmas to somebody in our school.” Crimm said the PTA’s social media team also posted a couple of locations where people who don’t have a child in the school could donate. “As an incentive to the kids we had a gift basket raffle and each class would have a winner,” she said. “When we collected their donation at the door they were given a raffle ticket to hand to their teacher. Then at the end of the day the teacher would draw out a ticket and the winner would take home a basket.” When the event was over the truck was stuffed, said Crimm. “It was indeed a wonderful success.” l

mericans across the country are rolling up their sleeves in service. Service is a great way to engage with the community while honoring the legacy of Dr. King. Davis County's Retired & Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) has partnered with the Long-term Care Ombudsman for this year's service opportunity. During the COVID-19 pandemic, nursing homes and assisted living facilities have been locked down, and residents feel very isolated, alone, and forgotten. We want to ensure that every resident in a Davis County long-term care or assisted living facility receives a letter, card, or picture telling them that we care. We are encouraging people of all ages in our community to volunteer their time and write a letter, make a card, or draw a picture for these residents. This is a safe and fun volunteer opportunity for anyone who wants to volunteer safely during this time of social distancing. Bring or mail your letters, cards, and pictures to North Layton Senior Activity Center (42 South State Street, Clearfield, Utah 84015) Jan. 18 - 22. If you have questions or would like more information, please contact RSVP at 801-525-5052 or 801-5255094 or you can email Jackie at jmsmith@ co.davis.ut.us.

‘Service Scarves’ bring warmth to the homeless By Becky Ginos|becky.g@davisjournal.com
BOUNTIFUL—First graders at Meadowbrook Elementary learned what it means to help others during the Christmas season with a “Service Scarves” project to tie fleece scarves for the homeless. “I wanted the kids to know they needed to give back to our community,” said teacher Jodie Burch. “They can learn about their civic duty and members of the community that they need to be aware of and take care of.” The kids also made cards that were tucked in a bag with the scarves. Misty Tucker, Community Action Coordinator with Open Doors in Clearfield will pick up the kits for distribution among the homeless. “We’ll hand them out during the annual Point in Time count,” said Tucker. “We go out three nights in January looking for people experiencing homelessness. We put together backpacks with socks, snacks and scarves. We also do a survey to find out what we can do to help with their homeless situation.” Tucker said the survey is part of their Homeless to Housing program. “To
qualify for the program they must be homeless as considered by HUD which is living in a place not meant for human habitation or in a shelter.” Applicants are interviewed then have a VI-SPDAT (Vulnerability IndexService Prioritization Decision Tool) assessment, she said. “It measures the barriers to their housing situation. It gives a score then we move onto the second assessment that has similar questions but goes more in depth.” The score puts them on the housing list, said Tucker. “Where they score determines where they get placed on the list. Usually the most vulnerable are first to get enrolled in the program. It’s up to them to find the housing and then we pay the deposit and first month’s rent. After that we pay at a declining rate for up to six months. We continue with case management and help them find employment to help them get back on their feet.” Meadowbrook came to us about how they could help, she said. “We’re always trying to get sponsors for sure.” l

Legislature announces COVID protocols, recommends education funding assistance By Becky Ginos|becky.g@davisjournal.com
SALT LAKE CITY—After initial budget estimates showed increased revenue, the Legislature announced last week that it would appropriate a one-time COVID-19 educator assistance stipend to teachers and staff who are making great sacrifices to educate students and keep schools open. The Executive Appropriations Committee (EAC) recommended the Legislature appropriate $121 million of the new revenue for K-12 teachers and staff. The EAC also recommended an appropriation of $141 million to fund a weighted pupil unit (WPU) increase and $95 million to fund growth and inflation in the public education base budget, according to material provided. “Our ability to make this commitment to educators and employees is because businesses have worked to keep the economy open,” said Senate President Stuart Adams, R-Layton. “We realize the challenges teachers have had this year. They’re teaching in classes and online. School secretaries are trying to find substitute teachers at a rate that’s never been placed on them before.” Those who maintain the schools are going above and beyond, he said. “They’re cleaning and sanitizing to make sure our children are safe. Because of all that effort we wanted to find a way to give an additional increase in COVID funding. We’re united in trying to do this. It’s the right thing to do.” We’re fortunate to live in Utah, said Adams. “We’re probably the only state in the nation that’s able to do this.”
In addition to the stipend, Adams and Speaker of the House Brad Wilson, R-Kaysville discussed COVID-19 protocols for the upcoming legislative session at a press conference held virtually last week. “It’s really important the legislative process gets vetted,” said Adams. “There’s concern over the pandemic but we have to roll out a vetting system no matter what circumstances we’re in.” The process is best done in an open and transparent way, said Wilson. “We’ve had to reengineer what we do to make sure the public has a way to engage and give feedback and input. We have better outcomes with the input we receive.” Wilson said they would be requiring mask wearing and social distancing. “We’ll have mask ambassadors who will help with that. If people refuse to wear a mask we will have to ask them to leave. We don’t want to put our staff or the lawmakers in jeopardy.” The public should participate electronically if possible, he said. “For the first time ever, we’ll be video casting committee meetings. We will also limit the number of visitors into the chambers and no guests will be allowed on the House floor. There will be access to the galleries with social distancing and mask wearing.” There will not be any events either, Wilson said. “No school groups or those types of functions in the Capitol. The highway patrol will have more of a presence. A disproportionate of our green and brown coat volunteers fall into the high risk category so the UHP will be filling a lot

in that role.” Other safety measures include Plexiglas in the House and frequent rapid COVID testing. “We’ll have a blended session if there are people who don’t feel comfortable coming,” said Adams. “But interactions are better in person. I think the majority will be on the floor and they’ll use good judgement to take care of themselves.” l

Top sports stories of 2020 By Tom Haraldsen|tom.h@davisjournal.com
T
o say the year 2020 was an odd one for sports would be an understatement. From high school sports events that were cancelled, rescheduled, then cancelled a few times this fall due to COVID, to abbreviated tournaments and complete loss of seasons, sports were affected at least as much as most every other part of our lives. There were some highlights from the year of virus, however:
Price wins 501st game
In January, Farmington girls’ basketball coach Van Price earned his 501st win, making him the coach with the most victories in Utah history. Price was a long time coach at Layton High, helping lead the Lancers to championship glory. And thus far this fall, as of this writing, the Phoenix are unbeaten in seven games. Many years of dedication to high school athletes earned him a very-worthy achievement.
Region titles last spring
Both Farmington girls’ and Woods Cross boys’ basketball teams took Region 5 titles as basketball wound up the regular season. They played deep into the state tournaments as well. Davis High’s boys led the way at the state 6A tournament, losing a heartbreaker in the finals but bringing a silver plaque back to the already jammed-packed awards cases in Kaysville.
Drill champs
Farmington High’s drill team took the 5A state title for the school’s first championship in that discipline.
Salvo honored
Long-time Davis High coach Lori Salvo was honored by the Utah High School Activities Association for her decades of leading the Darts in girls basketball, volleyball and golf. She received the honor during the state basketball tournament.
Merrill stars for Utah State
Bountiful High graduate Sam Merrill capped his amazing collegiate career by hitting the game winner and leading the Utah State University Aggies to the Mountain West Conference tournament title, including an upset of fifth-ranked San Diego State in the final game. He went on to be picked in the second round of the NBA draft by the Milwaukee Bucks.
PGA pros return to Farmington
The Korn Ferry Tour, which features future and past PGA stars, returned to Oakridge Country Club in Farmington, albeit without fans in attendance. That was a shame, because Farmington resi-

dent Daniel Summerhays tied for the lead after four rounds, finishing second after losing in a playoff in what was expected to be his final tournament as a pro. Summerhays began coaching the boys’ golf team at Davis High this fall (the Darts took second at state 6A). He may play a few tournaments occasionally, but decided to retire from the weekly grind of the PGA tour, where he won more than $12 million as a pro.
State cross country champs
Oct. 22 was a big day for local prep cross country. At Soldier Hollow, Bountiful High senior Dalton Mortensen and Woods Cross senior Carlee Hansen won individual 5A state titles by dominating their classifications. It was the second consecutive title for Mortensen and third for Hansen (who will run for North Carolina next year). Farmington’s boys’ team also won the state 5A title.
Soccer queens
Davis High won the 6A girls soccer championship on Oct. 30, keeping the Darts’ strong tradition of great girls’ soccer teams going.

State success this past fall
Bountiful High’s volleyball team advanced to the final four in this year’s 5A state tournament after a great season. Farmington and Davis boys’ golf teams
won region titles and advanced to state, and Davis football won the Region 1 title and moved on to play at state. Hoping for a bit more normality in 2021! l

Woods Cross, Viewmont, Davis have undefeated week in boys basketball By Josh McFadden|josh.m@mycityjournals.com
The season is young, but every win is important, especially in the Utah High School Activities Association’s RPI system. And a trio of Davis County teams helped themselves build their resumes for the postseason.
Woods Cross
The Wildcats are off to a 5-2 start, having won four straight entering this week. Last year, Woods Cross was 6-1 after seven games. The Wildcats took down a pair of opponents last week, both in close fashion. The first victory was an 89-87 thriller in double overtime over Syracuse on Dec. 18. Five Wildcats reached double figures in scoring, with two players – Mason Bendinger (27 points) and Jaxon Smith (20) – scoring at least 20 points on the night. Smith also had five rebounds and six assists. Keegan Phung may have had the best all-around game. He tallied 19 points, 10 rebounds, four assists and five steals. George Makris had 10 points and 11 rebounds, while Alex Earl had 11 points. The next night, Woods Cross hosted East and outlasted the Leopards 5148 in a much more defensive effort. Phung led the way with 12 points, and Bendinger had 10 points and seven rebounds. The Wildcats played at Green Canyon on Tuesday, after our press deadline.
Viewmont
The Vikings played just once last week but made the most of the opportunity, defeating Highland 71-51 on Dec. 18. With the win, the Vikings evened their record at 3-3. To achieve its second-straight win, Viewmont used big second and third quarters. Up 13-12 after the first six minutes, Viewmont outscored the Rams 18-6 in the second and 26-16 in the third to open up a comfortable margin. Viewmont shot 54% from the field and played stifling defense against a Highland team that had just 34 points through three quarters. In the victory, Radek Pulsipher poured in 19 points, including four three-pointers. Teammates Brash Emery and John Barnes had 18 points and 17 points, respectively. Emery also had a team-high six assists, while Barnes added six rebounds.

Viewmont had a chance to go above .500 on Dec. 22 when it hosted Syracuse.
Davis
The Darts dropped their first two games of the season but have been on a tear since. Davis won a trio of games last week to bring its streak to five consecutive victories. Win No. 1 a week ago came against crosstown foe Bountiful, 73-55 on Dec. 15. A look at the box score reveals that the contest was close throughout, except for the decisive second quarter. During this six-minute stretch, Davis blitzed Bountiful 21-5. Colby Sims drained seven three-pointers on his way to 25 points. Rex Sunderland added 16 points, six rebounds and six assists. Henry Ihrig chipped in 10 points, five rebounds and four assists. The following evening, Davis got past Box Elder 49-42, limiting the Bees to just 11 points in the first half. The offense struggled throughout parts of the game, but Sunderland did manage 13 points, while Chance Trujillo had eight points and seven rebounds. On Dec. 18, everything seemed to click for the Darts against Herriman in a 60-28 rout. Quarters one and three were particularly dominant for Davis on the defensive end, as the team allowed just one and three points, respectively. In the third quarter, Davis went on a 23-3 run. Overall, the Darts surrendered just eight converted shorts from the floor by Herriman. Ten Darts scored, led by Ihrig’s 14. Tate Garff contributed 11 points, while Colby Sims scored 10 points. Davis is off until Dec. 30 when it plays at Bingham. l

Born Kendrick Kang-Joh Jeong on July 13, 1969, to South Korean immigrant parents in Detroit, Ken Jeong was raised in Greensboro, North Carolina, and attended the Walter Hines Page High School until his early graduation at the young age of 16. Now, more than 35 years since graduating high school, Jeong is helping to launch a brand new spinoff competition show, “The Masked Dancer,” airing Sunday, Dec. 27, on Fox. Despite his unmatched comedic timing, Jeong was a serious and focused student with a traditional career path. Impressively, he went on to attend Duke University as a pre-med student and, while there doing his medical course work, he became interested in theatre, standup and improv. Once he graduated from Duke in 1990, Jeong continued his education at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine, where he added a couple of letters to his name: MD. Later, while completing his internal medical residency at the Ochsner Medical Center in New Orleans, he won the “Big Easy Laff-Off” and was subsequently urged to move to Los Angeles by judges Brandon Tartikoff (“Beggars and Choosers”) and Budd Friedman (“Superstars of Comedy Salute the Improv,” 1984). Taking them up on their recommendation, Jeong did indeed move to Los Angeles, going on to practice medicine there for several years while moonlighting as a comedy club performer. The popularity of his standup routines was highly instrumental in launching his career, eventually leading him to his early television work — most notably “Mad TV,” “The Office” and “Entourage.” In 2004, Jeong married his Vietnamese-American girlfriend, Tran Ho, who is a family physician. The couple have two children: twin daughters Zooey and Alexa, born in 2007.

Boye entertained the crowd to bring some joy during the pandemic.
