From
There is something special about summer at The Community House.
It’s in the sound of children laughing as they run down the hallway on the first day of camp. It’s in friendships formed, the confidence built while trying something new, and the simple joy of being part of something with your community. Summer is when memories are made, and for 85 years, those memories have been made right here, together.
As we celebrate our 85th anniversary, I think about the generations of families who have walked through our doors. Some first came as children and years later, they returned as parents, watching their own kids step bravely into new experiences. And eventually, as grandparents, they sat proudly in our audience or on our sidelines, seeing those traditions continue.
This summer’s program guide is filled with opportunities for all ages and interests. Whether it’s summer camp, arts, sports, sewing, volunteering, STEM classes, or new enrichment programs, each experience is designed to help young people discover who they are, build confidence, and create memories that will stay with them for a lifetime. But these moments aren’t just about programs. They’re about belonging. They’re about knowing there is a place where you are welcomed, encouraged, and celebrated.
When families choose to spend their summer with The Community House, they’re doing more than filling a calendar. They’re becoming part of an 85-year story-one built on connection, growth, and shared experiences. We are honored to be part of your family’s summer memories, just as generations before you have allowed us to be part of theirs. Here’s to sunshine, laughter, new friendships, and another unforgettable summer, TOGETHER.

Looking for a screen time alternative at the end of the week? Snacks included?? Come make something with us. Work with a different set of materials each day of the Open Studio. Follow along with the project of the day. Or make your own. The Art Studio is all yours. During the last hour we’ll wind down with free drawing, relaxing activities, snacks (provided) and cartoons. Students encouraged to bring oversized t-shirts to cover their clothes. We do have aprons and coverings available. But we inevitably make a mess and recommend kids wear something that can stand to get a little dirty.

Since 1941, The Community House has been at the heart of your neighborhood. We are also much more. For families in crisis, we’re a lifeline.
Through our Spark Youth Development Initiative, we create safe spaces for kids in an under-resourced area of DuPage County offering after-school care, mentoring, field trips, career exploration, and on-site mental health support. Our Counseling Center provides thousands of affordable sessions each year for children and families, regardless of their ability to pay.
At the same time, our Main Facility continues to thrive offering recreation, arts, and theater programs that strengthen the fabric of our community every day.
It is our goal this fiscal year to raise $200,000 in our 25–26 Annual Fund to keep The Community House vibrant and ensure no one is turned away because of financial barriers.

Program fees cover about 65% of our costs , but The Community House belongs to all of us.
Over 200 kids find confidence through Spark after-school, summer camp, and mentoring programs.
Kids learn to swim for the first time through Swimmers for Swimmers.
Young people learn new tools to navigate mental health challenges through counseling sessions, regardless of their ability to pay.
Serve nearly 5,000 youth, adults, and seniors participate in recreation, arts, and enrichment programs at The Community House.

Lavondria, a mother of four, was determined to build a better life for her family. After finding stable housing, she still worried about safe after-school care until she discovered The Community House’s Spark Youth Development Initiative.
Spark provided her children with after-school and summer programs, plus access to critical counseling through our Counseling Center. With therapy, mentoring, and support, her children began to thrive.
When health complications left Lavondria unable to work, Spark once again became a lifeline helping with rent, school supplies, and her own mental health care. Today, she’s on the path toward a permanent home and a brighter future.
Because of Spark, Lavondria’s family found stability, hope, and the chance to thrive.

with no tax support, it’s your generosity that ensures these programs remain accessible. THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!

Learn to play American Mah Jongg with friends! Mah Jongg is a game that has been sweeping the country. It is a stimulating game of both skill and luck. The American version of the game was brought from China in the 1920’s and uses tiles much like other games use cards. The goal of the game is to match your tiles with one of many combinations of tiles listed on a card. This four-week class is for the beginner or even someone who needs a refresher. Class is taught by two retired high school educators who have taught this remarkable game for more than 10 years. No supplies are needed.

Beginning Birdwatching: Start Seeing the Birds Around You is presented by John Cebula a distinguished educator, writer, and naturalist with a long career spanning more than four decades! John has published a number of articles focusing on nature writers and his own experiences as a naturalist and community scientist. Since birds are easy to observe and active when active, watching them is a great activity to enjoy outdoors! John introduces the basics to enjoy this hobby: He suggests equipment and books for beginners, shares his favorite spots to watch birds, and introduces beginners to some common--and a few uncommon--local birds. Since our own yards can attract birds, John offers advice about offering birds the resources needed to help them. Time will be available for Q&A.

The Boomer Babes are high-octane, hilariously irreverent musical entertainers who celebrate and lovingly skewer the Baby Boomer experience with zany wit, powerhouse harmonies, and spot-on song parodies. Vocal dynamo duo Pam Peterson and Jan Slavin don’t just sing — they schmooze, strut, and theatricalize life’s joys and absurdities from the ‘50s to the present with gut-busting humor and warm affection for their generation.
A beloved fixture in both Chicago cabaret circles and Florida performing arts, the Boomer Babes have delivered sold-out performances of unforgettable shows such as Giving Thanks For Spanx, Still Rockin’ Mmm-Mmm Good, and Funny Old Broads. Their signature blend of harmony-rich musicality and laugh-out-loud parody has delighted audiences at top venues including Park West, Davenport’s, Claudia Cassidy Theater, Skokie Theatre, and Palm Beach Gardens Arts Center.
From Beatles spoof medleys and plastic-surgery pleas set to “Mr. Sandman” to cleverly crafted political spoofs and aging-with-attitude parodies, the Boomer Babes bring both a sharp comic edge and true vocal prowess to their performances. One critic raves that Still Rockin’ balances the laughs with heart, celebrating friendship and life with toe-tapping musicality and love. Their YouTube parodies have struck a chord around the world with over 7 million views and counting, proving that great comedy and great voices never go out of style. Limited seating available!

Tai Chi with Zuzana
Ages: 18 years old and up
Join us at The Community House and meet Zuzana from Hummingbird Qigong in this beginner to intermediate Tai Chi program to improve your balance, coordination and overall health.

Per Harvard Medical School, Tai Chi is often described as “meditation in motion,” but it might as well be called “medication in motion.” There is growing evidence that this mind-body practice has value in treating or preventing many health problems. Tai Chi is a practice that involves a series of slow gentle movements and physical postures, a meditative state of mind, and controlled breathing. It’s a low-impact, slow-motion exercise, that doesn’t put any pressure on the joints. It’s also slowly becoming therapeutic exercise for many chronic health conditions. Session/Classes will not be pro-rated and are non-refundable unless canceled by The Community House.
