“..she liked still more the feeling that when its beautiful old walls shut her in no one knew where she was. It seemed almost like being shut out of the world in some fairy place.”

WEIGHT OF A WORLD SO LIGHT A SECRET GARDEN with Tan Halacoglu FALL 2022

Garden : The Above
A secret garden where you escape the hustle-bustle of the city. Where you slowdown.
Where you discover the quiet. Where you admire the fountains and plants. A version of paradise but surrounded by the urbanscape of Rome.
LEFT: mosaic and colour study of the garden and grotto conditions of the site.

A contrast to the garden is the grotto below. It is quiet there but one occasionally hears someone walking on the garden above. The grotto is dark, mysterious and damp (perfect place in the summer)

A detailed generative study of the distorted use of the golden ratio in Danteum by Terragni helped create spaces using the architectural typology of fields and hypospace.
“For small creatures such as we the vastness is bearable only through love.”
-Carl Sagan

WITHIN WITHOUT HOUSE FOR ASTRONOMERS
Fall Creek, Ithaca, NY

Located right next to Carl Sagn’s house overlooking Fall Creek, Ithaca - the house emerges in elevation by growing with and against the contours of the site The height of the house increase below and above the groundline as it goes further into the gorge. Programs include: an open amphitheatre, roof balcony, observatory. studies, bedrooms ,and a social floor.

The processional thresholds to all programatic spaces reamplify the feeling of entering the techtonically striated gorge The mesh and glass enable the house (which is a device) to filter out light at night and filter in sunlight during the day.

The negative space of the gorge is taken as an observation prototype to create spaces in the house.

“Home” is just not a physical space but “theoretical, analytical, and spatial displacements” where “marginals” can come together to imagine new possibilities and can be confident of their safety.”
-Janet

EYES WIDE SHUT
FALL 2021

SKATEPARK+HOUSING

The project brings together two groups of people- sleepers and skateboardersto form a codependant community where they symbiotically occupy space to compliment each others security and confidence.
A small outreach at the site after midnight suggested that from individuals interviewed
-60% feel unsafe crossing the quad late at night
-70% did not like the idea of the quad being flooded with lights to get rid of the darkness
-About 90% do not like the idea of an obsturctive building on the quad.

The housing/skatepark is embedded into less that one fourth of the quad and lies in the shape formed by most commonly used pedestrian paths. It takes skateboarders from one open threshold at the edge of the quad to the other at the center.
On the edges of the skatepark lie the housing units that serve as temporary homes for any student that does not want to walk back home late at night or wants a nap during the day. These units project light into the landscape till they are unoccupied to inform student of the vacancy and to also carefully illuminte the landscape.

Skateboarders act as “eyes on the street.” They are a healthy and happy community of people that occupy spaces at odd hours - act as default vigilantees and make people feel safer.
Students, professors, employees, and visitors have 24 hours access to the ‘living’ spaces in the project. This gives a chance for people to find rest when they leave work subjectively odd hours.

The project also included the addition of a long corridor walkway on the ground floor, which played a crucial role in enhancing connectivity and accessibility within the complex. This walkway formed a rectangular loop, seamlessly connecting five old government buildings that were part of the adaptive reuse project.
The corridor was designed to be wide and well-lit, with large windows along its length to allow ample natural light to filter through. This not only made the space more inviting but also created a pleasant walking environment for the elderly residents, encouraging them to move around and stay active. Benches and rest areas were strategically placed along the walkway, providing spots for residents to rest, socialize, and enjoy the view outside. The rectangular loop design of the corridor ensured that all five buildings were easily accessible from any point within the complex. This improved the overall flow and functionality.
