Foreword This three-movement sonata was commissioned and originally composed for soprano recorder and organ. However, the conception of the music allows the solo part of the sonata to be instrumentated very flexibly. Melody instruments such as flute, oboe or violin etc. can be selected. The same applies to the clarinet and other instruments tuned to B-flat. For those, a transcription is available in this edition. (Range of the solo part: sounding d' to d'''.) The accompanying instrument is either organ, harpsichord or piano. The organist may decide to what extent he makes use of the pedal and which organ stops he prefers for the respective movements. Volume indications are deliberately not given in order to leave the musicians the greatest possible freedom in shaping the music. Depending on the combination of instruments, there are sometimes other and even more varied possibilities of interpretation. For example, bar 56: the given staccato of the solo part may be transformed into a legato if it sounds better (depending on the instrument). However, the indicated Ritardando should be observed.
