Program note

Chatter Tjat

The piece Chatter was composed in 2005 and commissioned by Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra. Less than five minutes long, the piece was intended as an encore after a symphonic standard piece. My idea in such a case was to make a piece of music with a great deal of activity in it, so as to make an imprint on the audience even in such a short stretch of time. The piece can be associated with bustle, throng and travel (time-typical elements of our lives). It is as if the musicians of the orchestra are talking on top of each other, and not taking enough time to listen and reflect. In a calm mid-section, a more meditative mood emerges, where the music shifts to a language that clearly belongs to the journey, with a portion of humor for those who will hear it. At the end of this one movement piece, different rhythmic and melodic motives are playing against each other, before the whole of the orchestra joins together in a tight, rhythmic drive.

1 This piece was commissioned as an encore-piece to be played on tour directly after a Shostakovich symphony, so the percussion setup for the symphony is copied. If the piece is going to be played by 3 players, perc. 2 and 3 have to adjust their parts and cut some notes when it is necessary. Included in the parts there is a perc score for 2 players.

2 Some of the Double Basses with 5th string or extendend to C
