FOREWORD
Meditatus is written as a commission for Bodø Cathedral Choir in 2004. In this piece composer Jan Gunnar Hoff integrates a traditional mass with jazz elements and grooves from a modern jazz/rock band. Meditatus received an Edvard-prize from TONO in 2005. Quotes from the jury statement:
“A simple and beautiful main theme captivates and fascinates the listener. The strict form of the mass is kept while the improvised parts seem neither unmotivated nor strange. This is music that can be performed and appreciated by many”.
Notes from the composer
- The band parts are meant as guidelines and the musicians should find personal solutions here and there.
- The suggested parts and areas for improvisation can be extended and several soloists can be featured.
- The percussion part can be played by drum set or percussion instruments of free choice.
- Please use Meditatus CD with Bodø Cathedral Choir (GRCD4253) as a reference CD.
- Please note that all text and vocals are in latin. For norwegian users: o spells like å and u spells o
I wish to thank conductors Ragnhild Strauman and Ragnar Rasmussen for their help in finishing this score. Their input and skills have been of great importance to the result.
