What Wondrous Love: Reflections on the Seven Last Words The tradition of shape note singing, which took root in 18th century America and flourished in the subsequent century, has given us some of our more beloved hymn tunes, from “Wondrous Love” and “I Will Arise” to “Amazing Grace.” The practice continues today, not only in churches on Sunday morning, but also in public “Sacred Harp Sings” that commonly take place in Appalachia. Participants often sing the tune first on the fa-sol-la syllables before launching into the text, both times with equal gusto. A leader stands in the middle of the room and keeps time, and many of the singers can be heard stamping the beat out in unison. The result is an earthy, rustic, community sound that one can only imagine emulates the ruggedness of 19th century settlers to the mountain areas of the south. The first version of What Wondrous Love was written in 2017 while I was serving a Methodist Church in Trussville, Alabama (a suburb of Birmingham), where shape note singing was a part of the culture (there were choir members who remembered fellow singers, recently departed, who wrote out the “fa-sol-la” syllables in all of their music.) It went over so well that I decided to resurrect it at my subsequent church, Central UMC in Albuquerque. For this second version (2019) I was tasked with expanding the piece to a full cantata, including congregational hymns and a liturgy that anyone could take and use as a full Tenebrae Service. Retaining the idea of using shape note tunes as the unifying device for the work, I included popular tunes such as “Land of Rest” as the congregational hymns but gave them new words. I also added an aria, “O Look Upon the Cross,” a setting of the shape note tune Idumea. With the inclusion of these new elements, I wanted to create opportunities for listeners and participants to reflect upon our part in the Good Friday story. Instead of thinking simply of the crucifixion as an act committed by people other than ourselves or as an event long past that bought salvation for all who believe in Christ, it is my hope that we can recognize that fear and greed separate us from God and from each other right now, in this day and age, and that our inhumanity to each other perpetuates that act of crucifixion. In the “Invitation,” the stomping of the singers is meant to emulate the sound of Sacred Harp singers stomping the beat in an old wooden church. This stomping begins at the beginning and continues through the first section, concluding on the downbeat of letter A. On the “humm” (as well as the word “come” at the end of the movement) the singers should hold the vowel only briefly and sustain on “mm” sound. The extended string ending at the conclusion of “Finished” is meant to honor the tradition of reflection, silence, and instrumental response at this point in the Tenebrae. Throughout the piece, I tried to recall the Bach Passions in which the choir’s role can change, from spectator to participant to commentator, and in which the soloists narrate the action (“Mother”) and even reflect on our own responsibility for the crucifixion (“Did Christ O’er Sinners Weep,” “O Look Upon the Cross.”) I would like to thank the Chancel Choirs and soloists of Trussville First UMC (Trussville, AL) and Central UMC (Albuquerque, NM) and the Giovanni String Quartet for bringing this music to life, and Rev.
