Using the familiar tune based on the 12th century chant, DIVINUM MYSTERIUM (Of the Father's Love Begotten), this Lenten texts reflects and juxtaposes the the ideas of this popular Christmas hymn with words by Samuel Gastorius, 1649-1708. This setting allows the congregation to sing as well as challenges the choir on a final "Double Descant" stanza (sopranos and tenors). It also incorporates Christ's words from the cross quoting Psalm 22 "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" This setting premiered at St. Thomas Lutheran Church with the New Life Choir under the direction of the composer, Jason Horner, and with collaborative pianist Elliott Lockwood.
