Program Notes Like us, water's mood reflects its environment. A slowly dripping faucet does not feel the same as a raging flooded river; a dark bottomless ocean is not a gentle spring shower. Water can be violent, meditative, soothing, empowering, intimidating, terrifying... anything that a person can feel, water can evoke. But only if you listen. Without water, we all die. Without us? Water continues to do what it has done for millions of years. Treasure our oceans, streams, clouds, and glaciers. Take care of them, and you take care of not only yourself, but also those that will come after. ~SM "Water's Voice" is meant to call attention to the state of water in the world, while being an accessible choral piece. The traditional Western harmonies juxtaposed with the global headlines about water calls attention to the privilege that many of us live with, and asks us to question how we think about water. ~MH
Performance Notes During the performance of "Water's Voice", the news headlines should be spoken randomly within the designated areas (rehearsals A, E, and G; the repeated sections). Details can be found on the text page. (Singers are also invited to bring in their own headlines to keep the piece modern and relevant.) The repeated sections at A, E, and G should have the choir layer in part by part, as designated in the score (at G, both middle parts sing the first and second repeat). If a longer repeat is desired by the conductor, the "layers" may be added/removed at will, but at least four repetitions (as written) is preferable. If chest pats (flat palm, near the shoulder-- to mimic a heartbeat) are not adequately loud enough to be heard, the conductor may choose to have the choir stomp their feet gently, thump their chests with fists, use a percussion instrument, etc. For clarity in the score, slurs have been purposefully omitted from long lines on a sung "ooh". These sections should be smooth and continuous, with stagger breathing throughout unless otherwise specified. Any iteration of the word "listen*" with the asterisk symbol (*) designates that the "N" sound should be held out. Do not hold out the "N" if there is no asterisk.

Headlines may be spoken in any order within their designated area (indicated by rehearsal letters), with the exception of paragraph 1, which should be spoken in order, prior to the first sung text. At the conductor’s discretion, headlines may be omitted and/or rehearsal sections A, E, and G may be additionally repeated. 1. (before piece begins) Do you know where your water comes from? Try to imagine your life without water. Think about how much water you use. Can you quantify it? 2. (rehearsal A) 785 million people remain without even basic drinking water services. 2 billion people live in countries experiencing high water stress. 80% of wastewater flows back into the ecosystem without being treated or reused. 297,000 children under five die every year from diseases due to poor sanitation, poor hygiene, or unsafe drinking water. 3. (rehearsal E) 2 out of 5 people worldwide do not have a basic hand washing facility with soap and water at home. 1 out of 4 health care facilities worldwide lack basic drinking water services. Over half the global population lacks safely managed sanitation services. 4. (rehearsal G) Of all the water on Earth, less than 1% is fresh and available to supply human demands for food, energy, and everyday life. Water's Voice
About the Composer Marjorie Halloran (b. 1985) is a synesthetic composer, songwriter, and performer based in Austin, TX. Her choral music blends together lush and memorable melodic lines, contemporary harmonies and textures, the occasional abrupt change in time signature or key (just to keep things interesting), and equally important roles for all voices-- especially altos. Halloran holds a BA in music theory/composition from the University of California at Davis, and an MFA in composition/songwriting from the Vermont College of Fine Arts. She has extensive experience both as a choral performer and composer in California, Texas, Vermont, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, and around the world. She is the co-founder and coordinator of the VCFA Choral Workshop, a program for students interested in learning choral composition, and has studied with Alice Parker, Abbie Betinis, Michael Early, Jonathan Bailey Holland, and Don DiNicola, among others. Halloran has been the winner of the 2015-16 WomenSing "Youth Inspiring Youth" choral composition competition, a finalist for the I Kromatika composition competition in 2015, and a semi-finalist for the American Prize in Composition (choral division) in 2018. Her favorite symphony is Robert Schumann’s 2nd, and her favorite instrument beyond voice is the viola. She loves the color yellow, biodegradable glitter, peanut butter, cocoa with mint, chords in first inversion, The Little Mermaid, and reading alto clef. She has a husband, an orange cat, and an obsession with rainbows, and her favorite Pokémon are Pikachu and Koffing. Once, she camped in Antarctica.
About the Poet I wrote my first poetry as an angsty teenager in the late '90s. As I thought I matured, my inspirations followed: less Shel Silverstein, more John Donne. After getting through that rough pseudo-intellectual phase, I now aspire to write unique poetry rather than emulating what's already been written. Heavy with metaphors and personification, my poems are my way of crystallizing my emotions into a more tangible, manageable format. When I'm not indulging in the fine arts, I lose myself in the arts of programming and mathematics, coming up with new ways to exploit flaws in video games, and trying to find something interesting to fix around the house. ~SM
