Virgam virtutis tuae from Dixit Dominus A prolific, yet relatively unknown composer of the eighteenth-century, Marianna von Martines lived a fruitful life as a musician in Vienna. She composed over 200 works for instrumental, vocal, and choral ensembles in both sacred and secular genres. In spite of her relationships with some of history's most cherished poets and composers (Pietro Metastasio, Franz Joseph Haydn, Nicola Porpora, Padre Martini, and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart) her music has been neglected and has only in recent decades garnered the interest of scholars and musicians. Martines' compositions, which are stylistically similar and of commensurate quality to that of her male contemporaries, garnered great attention and respect by other musicians and strengthed her ties to the Austrian imperial court. Although a large portion of her output is made up of large works for chorus, soloists, and orchestra, the goal of this edition is to expose choral singers to the incredible music of Marianna von Martines and inspire the next generation of musicians, conductors, and scholars to reimage how we might bring this repertoire to our modern day audiences. Martines composed the psalm setting of Dixit Dominus for mixed chorus, soloists, and orchestra in 1774 following her acceptance into the Academia Filharmonica in Bologna, Italy. It is worth noting that Martines was the only woman in the history of the organization to be accepted. "Virgam virtutis tuae" is the second of seven movements, originally scored for two flutes, strings, continuo, and solo treble voices. Editorial Notes: Editorial considerations have been made to balance honoring the original manuscript while also considering developing voices and the needs of a choral setting. Elided texts, indicated with brackets, have been altered for ease of singing. Breath mark and some additional dynamic additions are provided to support and enhance the stile galant style. Learning Objectives: 1. Students will learn about Marianna von Martines, an important composer of the 18th century. 2. Students will be able to identify and define articulation markings reminiscent of the Late Baroque-Early Classical eras. 3. Students will be able to confidently sing both independent and duetting vocal lines.
Vocalise (warm-ups) suggestions for building tone and developing an understanding of style have been provided along with this edition.
Text, Translation, and IPA Virgam virtutis tuae emittet Dominus et Sion: [viɾgɑm viɾ'tu:tis 'tu:ɛ ɛ'mitɛt 'dɔ:minus ɛks si:on] The Lord shall send the rod of they power out of Zion: dominare in medio inimicorum tuorum. opt. [vi] This vocalise is designed for range exploration in addition to helping musicians gain comfort approaching their onset of sound from the top of the octave (from the bottom is something they will likely be accustomed to.) This will be crucial for the opening entrances of the piece. Remain cautious that musicians do not slide into the intitial pitch, but instead have a clean onset. Once comfortable with [v], you can transition to [vi]/“vee”, encouraging musicians to keep the vowel with focused, yet lifted, resonance and avoiding spreading the vowel.

This vocalise, similar to the first, is aimed toward combatting the tendancy to scoop into the syllable [vi]/“vee”. Musicians should complete this vocalize on one single breath, with the first four quarter notes being sung with slight separation. You can give them the imagery of “skipping a rock across the surface of a pond” or a kinesthetic motion of brushing one hand across the back of the other, ending with a long sweeping motion for the descending portion of the scale.

Musicians can use this vocalise to develop an approache to late Baroque/early Classical compositional style. The indications are not meant as a place to breathe, but rather where there should be a lift in the sound following the dotted rhythmic values. In addition, musicians should be enouraged to maintain the beauty and warmth of the [a] vowel, as it may unknowingly spread or shift in its purity.
