Notes Pulitzer prize-winning poet Sara Teasdale (1884-1933) suffered from poor physical and mental health through much of her life. Born in St. Louis, she lived most of her adult life in New York’s Upper West Side. She was courted by and enjoyed a lifelong connection with poet Vachel Lindsay, but married and divorced businessman Ernst Filsinger. She ultimately died from suicide. “Two Minds” is from Teasdale’s sixth book, Dark of the Moon, published in 1926. It speaks to the exuberance of two minds in love, and to the sad realization that this cannot be matched in flesh-and-bones, income-and-expense, real life. In this setting for advanced a cappella choir, Houston attempts to capture the variously cerebral, exultantant, distant, and crystalline qualities of this short and gemlike poem.
About the Composer Dr. Seth Houston is associate chair for performance and director of choral activities at the University of California, Irvine, where he conducts UCI Chamber Singers, teaches conducting and composition, and oversees the musicianship curriculum. Prior to his appointment at UCI, Houston taught at Carroll University in Waukesha, Wisconsin. Houston holds a DMA degree in choral music from the University of Southern California, where he studied with Jo-Michael Scheibe, Morten Lauridsen, and Nick Strimple, as well as earlier degrees from the University of Michigan and Oberlin Conservatory of Music. A committed educator, Houston taught middle school and high school choir for nine years and directed youth ensembles with the Chicago Children’s Choir, Village Harmony, and Big Sky. Houston has presented research at national conferences of the College Music Society, National Collegiate Choral Organization, and American Brahms Society.
