The river glideth at his own sweet will: Dear God! the very houses seem asleep; And all that mighty heart is lying still! Program Notes
I grew up in a rural area, surrounded by nature and beautiful forests. When I moved to a city for college, it was difficult to find any beauty in the busy streets and construction After eight years living in the city, I am struck by the same feeling that Wordsworth conveyed: that sometimes domes, theatres, and temples can be as beautiful as the forest.
Text Composed upon Westminster Bridge, September 3, 1802
Earth has not any thing to show more fair: Dull would he be of soul who could pass by A sight so touching in its majesty: This City now doth, like a garment, wear The beauty of the morning; silent, bare, Ships, towers, domes, theatres, and temples lie Open unto the fields, and to the sky; All bright and glittering in the smokeless air. Never did sun more beautifully steep In his first splendour, valley, rock, or hill; Ne'er saw I, never felt, a calm so deep!

As the title suggests, William Wordsworth wrote “Composed upon Westminster Bridge, September 3, 1802” as he was traveling across said bridge on his way to Paris. Wordsworth, well known for his depictions of nature, was surprisingly struck by the beauty of London, praising its majesty and beauty. The music moves fluidly between key and meter to convey each image as closely as possible.
