About the piece: For all my assumed familiarity with hymns, I was introduced to this tune from a beautiful children's picture book illustrated by Frances Tyrrell. The imagry of the Christ child appearing in a far-removed cultural context was eye-opening to me as I considered the blonde-haired, blue-eyed Jesus I know. I was delighted to Bind a lesser-known, hauntingly beautiful, and fresh Christmas piece in the face of the more familiar carols I tire of. It was like re-discovering the nativity story for the Birst time through someone else's perpsective. The only added text is a concluding "Alleluja" which anticipates Easter.
Performance Notes: Tempo freedom is the hallmark of this arrangement. The tesion of the rubato of the Blute solos with the regular tempo of the choir are notated with several fermati. Consider allowing the Blutist complete freedom of tempo and inBlection in the absence of metrically conducting until choral entrances.
About the arranger: Laurie Betts Hughes (b. 1977) is a spirited conductor of creative connection who fosters community through choral singing; both community within the choir as well as between the choir and the greater community. To this end she composes choral pieces, both commissioned and uncommissioned, and builds choirs of all kinds.
