Performance Notes "The Helpers" was wri en in memory of Fred Rogers and his wife, Joanne Rogers, who recently passed away in January of 2021. Fred was a talented composer who wrote songs for his popular show "Mr. Rogers Neighborhood." Many of these tunes are quoted either directly or indirectly throughout the piece. All of the lines of text for "The Helpers" are direct quotes from Fred, and the tenor solo was wri en with him in mind. Joanne was an accomplished concert pianist, so the accompaniment for "The Helpers", in particular the piano solo, was wri en with her in mind. This piece was also wri en as a response to the difficulties faced during the 2020-2021 season, including the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic and the heightened issues of social justice in the United States. My hope is that these words from Mr. Rogers would encourage us all to to remember the helpers in our lives who have loved us into being, to look for the helpers in times of disaster, and to be a helper for others in their time of need.
