Composer's Program Note Poet David Whyte has recounted the Irish story of a monk at the liminal edge of a monastery's grounds who hears a bell tolling the call to prayer. The monk is struck in that moment by the thought that the bell is the most beautiful sound in the world. Then, a blackbird calls from the wild space beyond — this is also, the monk thinks, the most beautiful sound in the world. These two paths — one of practice and ripening, and the other of wild suchness — meet in the vivid borderlands of a healthy human life. Not in stasis, but in conversation and companionship with the person walking the evolving journey of their own identity. This musical setting of The Bell and the Blackbird tries to walk this conversational borderland by observing the unfolding layers of meaning in Whyte's linebreaks. End-stops that become enjambments cast and recast the structure of a life both improvised and carefully planned. Long after the notes and rhythms of the opening section were complete, I encountered a recording of Whyte reading the poem aloud — he, too, kneaded these words repeatedly until they gave up multiple meanings. In the end: bells, birds, humans—they all sound their own notes. A bit like dissonance, a bit like sweetness, and both at once: cacophanies of vibrant order and patterns of simple clangor, all singing their Allelujahs together, alone. Composer Biography Forrest Pierce, composer and admirer of both birds and bells, lives and works in the tallgrass prairie of Kansas. Raised on the Columbia Plateau of Washington state, he writes ecstatic and meditative explorations of empty space and full-on humanity, driven by love for the natural world, the beauty of people, and the everywhere mystery of everything. His choral works have won the Barlow Prize and the competitions of the Boston Choral Ensemble and Boston Chamber Singers, and are frequently performed by amateurs and professionals alike. Either way takes courage, either way wants you to be nothing but that self that is no self at all, wants you to walk to the place where you find you already know how to give every last thing away.
