T’amo mia vita
Vittoria Aleotti (1575 – 1620)
About the composer: Vittoria Aleotti is most likely the same person who directed the famous consort at the Convento del Carmen in Ferrara, Raphaela Alleotta.1 This remarkable young woman is one of the best known female composers of the early 17th century because she has the distinction of having two collections of music published in her own name. The first, compiled by her father, was a collection of madrigals Ghirlanda de madrigali a quatro voci. The second, a collection of sacred music. Concerning the Ornaments: Singers may enjoy adding the suggested ornaments included in this edition in ossia measures above the score, either in rehearsal or performance. They are modeled on examples and principles advocated by Giovanni Camillo Maffei’s in his treatise on singing, which was published in Naples in 1562.2 Maffei, a medical doctor and respected amateur singer, codified many principles of canto di glossi (singing with ornamentation) commonly in use during the sixteenth century. Source: From Ghirlanda de Madrigali a 4 voci (1593), scan of manuscript from IMSLP. 1 Barbara Garvey Jackson, “Say Can You Deny Me” A Guide to Surviving Music by Women from the Sixteenth Through the Eighteenth Centuries (Fayetteville, AR: University of Arkansas Press, 1994), p. 14. Additionally, in her dissertation, The Madrigals and Motets of Vittoria/Raphaela Aleotti (Ph.D. diss., Kent State University, 1982), Ann Carruthers-Clement concluded they are the same person on the evidence that Vittoria is not mentioned in her father’s will, and the name Raphaela cannot be found in family documents prior to her entering the convent (references to Vittoria are scarce after that time). 2 Giovanni Camillo Maffei, “Letter on Singing,” trans. Carol MacClintock in Readings in the History of Music in Performance. (Bloomington: Indiana University Press, 1979.) This score is not licensed for performance. Editorial Notes: Tripla notation, measure 20. Convention points to measure = measure, which may argue for a slightly faster tactus at the beginning of half-note = 72 (rather than closer to 60). Changed note in measure 22, tenor D instead of B, to preserve (make truer) echo from women’s parts in measure 21. In the Canto part of the source documents, all accidentals (including the first F-natural in measure four of this score) are clearly marked. Text & Translation: Other well-known settings of this text: Luzzasco Luzzaschi (for three women’s voices) Claudio Monteverdi (five voice setting in his fifth book of madrigals) “T’amo mia vita,” la mia cara vita I love you my life, my dear life dolcemente mi dice, e in questa sola si soave parola sweetly tells me, and with this single lovely word par mi trasformi lietamente il core. it seems my heart is joyfully transformed. O voce di dolcezza, e di diletto, prendila tosta. Oh sweet voice of such delight, take it quickly. Amore, stampala nel mio petto, spiri dunque per lei l’anima mia. Love, print it on my heart, breathe only for her my soul. “T’amo mia vita,” la mia vita sia. I love you my life, that you should be my life. Kirk Aamot Director of Choral Activities Montana State University Bozeman, MT
