SWEET PEAS Sweet Peas Of all the flowers in the world I love sweet peas the most. Not as elegant as orchids but more delicate than daisies, not as passionate as roses but as hardy as carnations, not as popular as poppies but more fragrant than petunias. Yes, of all the many blossoms sweet peas are the best. When I was nine years old my bedroom was a pretty pink. I had to clean it every week but then, when I was finished, Mom would come and put a vase of sweet peas on my windowsill. They smelled so good and looked so nice— I loved their muted brightness. Not as sturdy as the dahlia but more lasting than alyssum, not as sprightly as the tulip but more varied than the violet, not as fragile as impatiens but as plentiful as lilies. Yes, of all the many blossoms, sweet peas are the best. Of all the flowers in the world I love sweet peas the most.
