This performance edition of Suscepit Israel from Bach’s Magnificat, BWV 243 was created for the mirabai performance at Southwest ACDA in February 2020. While we did not have an oboist on the roster, we did have an accomplished saxophonist who played the soprano saxophone exquisitely on this piece. The obbligato instrument plays the pre-existing “Tonus Peregrinus” as a cantus firmus - it is known as the wandering chant tone. The wandering tone in relation to the Israelites and overall text of the Magnificat helped to illuminate the theme of the mirabai performance, the concept of “Home.” The piece that followed in the mirabai program was Refugee, by Moira Smiley. This performance was the final performance for many of the mirabai members and SWACDA attendees before the COVID-19 pandemic. It is a performance that many mirabai members hold close to our hearts.
