This performance edition of Bach’s Suscepit Israel from Magnificat, BWV 243 was created for the mirabai performance at Southwest ACDA in February 2020. The obbligato instrument plays the pre existing “Tonus Peregrinus” as a cantus firmus, known as the wandering chant tone. The wandering tone in relation to the Israelites and overall text of the Magnificat helped to illuminate the theme of the mirabai performance, the concept of “Home.” The piece that followed in the mirabai program was Refugee, by Moira Smiley. We collaborated with a saxophonist on multiple pieces for the SWACDA performance. Rather than adding an oboist to the roster, we invited the saxophonist to play the oboe part on soprano saxophone an unconventional, yet pragmatic approach with a striking result. This performance was the final performance for many of the mirabai members and SWACDA attendees before the COVID 19 pandemic. It is a performance we hold close to our hearts. In June 2022, mirabai recorded this movement on our second album, “Home in Me.”
