I hear the murmurs of the town And the pines rustling Quiet birds settle down And crickets begin chirping. I feel the mist settle in The sky above slowly spins The stars streak, the moon blurs My mind itches where I cannot scratch. Sun rises from the east and I know I know what I must do The world is dark at night, they say But really, it’s the other way. “Starry Night”, written by Albert Zhao, was the winning poem of the 2017 Schola Cantorum Poetry Competition for high school students in Los Altos, CA. It was premiered by Schola Cantorum in June of 2017. The piece is relatively simple, to both preserve the integrity of the young poet and let the text speak without hiding it underneath layers of complexity. The poem paints a vivid picture of the scenery of Van Gogh’s painting of the same name. Women sing the opening verse in unison (later, the men sing the same melody with harmony), almost like a nursery rhyme. The tune gains texture and harmonic instability during the verse about the sky spinning, where the narrator lets his mind wander to the mysteries of the universe. The juxtaposition of the differences in these sections tells a story of the struggle to balance appreciation for nature and simple things in life, while still wondering what else is out there. The refrain muses upon the way society sees this world as merely “dark”, but the narrator and the artist both can see how full of life and color it really is.
Marjorie Halloran, originally from the San Francisco Bay Area, is a composer, singer, and songwriter. She is the co-founder of the choral workshop program for composition students at the Vermont College of Fine Arts in Montpelier, VT, where she received her MFA in composition with an emphasis in songwriting. Marjorie has studied with Michael Early, Jonathan Bailey Holland, Don DiNicola, Abbie Betinis, and Alice Parker. Marjorie is the winner of the 2015-16 WomenSing "Youth Inspiring Youth" choral composition competition, and her piece "8 Ways to Look at a Window" was premiered in June 2016. She was also a finalist for the I Kromatika composition competition in 2015, and a semi-finalist for the American Prize in Composition (choral division) in 2018. An accomplished choral singer in addition to composer, Marjorie has performed with many different ensembles in the Bay Area, as well as in Princeton, New York City, and the University of California at Davis, where she received her BA in music theory/composition. She currently sings with Chorus Austin and Inversion Ensemble of Austin, TX.
