"Silent Night" (German: "Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht!") is a popular Christmas carol, declared an intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO in 2011.
It was first performed on Christmas Eve, 1818, at the Nikolauskirche, the parish church of Oberndorf, a village in the Austrian Empire on the Salzach river in present-day Austria.
Over the years, because the original manuscript had been lost, Mohr's name was forgotten and although Gruber was known to be the composer, many people assumed the melody was composed by a more famous composer, and it was variously attributed to Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven or Schubert. However, a manuscript was discovered in 1995 in Mohr's handwriting and dated by researchers as c. 1820.
Silent night represents one of the most well-known and iconic Christmas songs.
Composer's note: This arrangement does not present particular difficulties and has a strophic structure; it offers also the possibility of performing with the English text and with the original German text.
It also features an optional solo and one descant
