Program Note
Shenandoah is one of the few American folk songs that contemporary Americans are likely to be familiar with, and its expression of longing for a beloved place resonates universally. I used to think of a river southwest of the Shenandoah Valley, on which I spent time one summer, when I heard or sang this song. Now I think of the people who lost their homes to hurricane or fire, or who were forced to flee violence in their homelands, and what longing for a beloved place means to them.
