Note from the Composer
There is no bond quite like that formed between people who have the chance to make art together. This perhaps explains why I was so saddened to hear, in the fall of 2015, of the loss of a friend from high school, with whom I had sung in choir and performed in theatre. She died very suddenly at the age of nineteen, and, in my group of friends and acquaintances from that time, her loss has reverberated ever since. A few days later, a small group of former chorus members were able to honor her memory by singing a piece we had originally sung together back in high school at her memorial, and I found a certain solace in that singing; we all did. This is one of the amazing powers which music possesses. In the wake of any tragedy, one often hears or reads or says the phrase, “rest in peace.” It’s simple – only three words, only eleven letters – but I’ve always found something deeply resonant in that simplicity. It is also, when translated, the phrase from which the “requiem” mass gets its name: “requiem aeternam,” a plea for “eternal rest.” At her memorial, friends and family spoke about the wonderful person we had all known, and, as they did, I kept finding myself drawn back to this little epitaph, almost as though it were a prayer. Those words, and the music we had made, echoed through my head that night, until I sat down to work through my feelings in the best way I know: music. The result was this short composition for unaccompanied voices. It isn’t complicated; it’s just a setting of those simple words, in English or Latin, and an “amen.” It also isn’t, by any stretch of the imagination, a fitting tribute to the amazing life that inspired it, or to any of the amazing lives which end every day on this planet. It’s just the only thing I could find to say: a fervent wish for those who are lost and a prayer for those who loved them.
