When I am gone, release me – let me go I have so many things to see and do. You must not tie yourself to me with tears

Be happy that we had so many years. I gave you love, you can only guess, how much you gave me in happiness. I thank you for the love each have shown, but now it is time I travelled alone. So grieve awhile for me if grieve you must, then let your grief be comforted by trust It is only for a while that we must part so bless those memories within your heart. I will not be far away, for life goes on. so if you need me, call and I will come. Though you cannot see or touch me, I will be near And if you listen with your heart, you will hear All of my love around you, soft and clear. Then when you must come this way alone, I will greet you with a smile and “Welcome Home”

Program Notes

This piece was written as the final piece of a collection, “Songs from the Departed,” all setting texts left behind by departed poets, instructing loved ones on how to mourn. Initially a set of 5 pieces, Marie Bucoy-Calavan, my graduate professor and the conductor of the premiere, thought that it was missing something. I found this anonymous text through ChatGPT and immediately feel in love with it Ambiguously spiritual, this text is deeply hopeful about the time after death, and I found it incredibly comforting. When searching for a good choral text, I am frequently drawn to the final line of the poem and the sentiment it conveys. There is no more comforting thought about imminent death than “Welcome Home.”

Composer Bio

Mickey McGroarty is an emerging composer based in Akron, Ohio, where he lives with his fiancée Anneliese and two cats, Twilight and Piper. McGroarty earned his Master of Music degree in Choral Conducting from the University of Akron under Marie Bucoy-Calavan after obtaining his Bachelor of Arts degree in Music from the same institution. He currently teaches piano, organ, voice, choir, and fundamentals of music at Hiram College and plays piano and organ for both Church of Our Savior Episcopal in Akron and Temple Israel in Fairlawn. McGroarty’s music has been performed all over the world, from L.A. to Munich, Germany and has been commissioned by such ensembles as Cleveland Chamber Choir and Choral Arts Initiative.
